@Oscar Cardenas because he doesnt fit the typical "metal" formula...who gives a fuck if it sounds good! Rody walker from Protest the Hero cops the same shit
Devin townsend has mastered screaming into his cleans. His distortion and vocal fry is perfect now. And its taken him over 20 years. It doesnt happen over night
You say that but during a recent interview with TheCharismaticVoice he admitted he would scream until he tasted blood... so... I think he might be a rare case of someone whose vocal cords just take abuse better than most. Or he is exaggerating his own inexperience so the rest of us feel better about how amazing he is.
His point about vulnerability is so key. It drives the emotions that people connect to. And his range gives Periphery so many different levels to operate on. Awesome stuff and a smart interview.
This is so satisfying. This is part of what makes Spencer awesome. He understands that screaming is an expression of emotion which in itself displays vulnerability. Dude gets it. Best singer ever?...
It's amazing to hear how similar Spencers vocal backstory and technique is to myself and other vocalists I've talked with. Some of this stuff is never shown or discussed often and it's just fantastic to watch. I wonder how many people learned to scream on their way to work/school to avoid the embarrassment haha. Thanks for this series guys, just awesome🤘
So true! It's about learning to experience your voice in light of learning how to study other vocalists that inspire you. Then figure out how to do it safely!
this is the biggest obstacle for me to practice, I'm just too embarrassed that someone will hear me screaming like an idiot hahah, gotta take more car drives it seems
4:24 this is especially self evident in something like Periphery's "Mile Zero". Not that spencer's technique is off when growling notes like "I will miss you my friend", but you can hear the sorrow in that line deeply.
Already felt like I hit the jackpot finding Chris's videos and singing courses. Learned how to scream and sing significantly higher. Now he's collaborating with my favourite vocalist out there?!?! Spencer's vocals are literally the reason why I wanted to sing higher and learn to scream! This is crazy! Thank you for doing this Chris. I am so pumped to see all of the material the two of you have put together!
Great discussion on screaming. It's also inspiring to hear Spencer's story of how he discovered his voice. It's useful information even of you don't scream when singing.
Light is my favorite Periphery track. For some reason it hits me so hard emotionally. It's one of those songs I can say I love, and the lyrics mean a lot to me. Thanks for writing it Spencer, i feel like you know a part of my story.
Great interview. Man, I still remember training how to scream 20 years. I'm still working on it. It's more deathmetal style now but screaming it's perfect.
@@korkunctheterrible4302 it's great for warm ups even low deathmetal style vocals. It helps me. If you wanna learn how to do low growls then you have to search other channels. Really excited for this. Thanks for teaming up with Spencer on this Chris, you seem to know your audience pretty well and he's an excellent example to learn from!
This right here is revolutionary! An in-depth discussion about his approach to vocals along with actual performance, what more can a man ask for... And then you provide the Warmups as well FOR FREE! All I can say is Thank You to you both.
I remember when I discovered Chris and thought he was THE teacher I needed and missed. And now he just releases this course with my favorite singer... seems like Chris know what I need. I’m suspecting him to spy on me though my laptop or my Alexa.
So as it turns out, that high screaming that Devin Townsend is stuck in mostly is the same thing Spencer does. I.E. the discernible pitch is in head voice, not chest. That's what I hear, anyhow. Back in the days I used to scream like that, I found you could lean on one side or the other of the break to achieve different sounds. Sounds like the target notes are higher than I'd have guessed for Spencer.
It is the headvoice placement, with airflow through the glottis allowing the true folds to vibrate too. The best way to learn to do that safely is with the messa di voce exercise. best of luck
Wow this is so inspiring!!! I am also impresed by the fact that spencer was singing "light" from P1 , I wish he rerecored that album with the production of their newest album :D
I’m excited for you guys to do a whole video on his mixed voice singing. I saw them live with dance Gavin dance and Spencer sounds just as incredible live as he does on record.
Wow. I have a how to scream video on my channel and his explanation is so in line with how I found it. That head and falsetto breaking point is everything.
Man, this video about voice-break screaming has given me hope into finally finding my screams. I can do the low false chord but I've been trying vocal fry for forever. My fry is always super quiet and weak but this voice-break style, this comes natural to me. It feels so right and with time I'll have the confidence to do something with it. Thank you so much chris
I loved this! Great video :) one of my favorite screams of Spencer is on Reptile when he does what is nearly a tritone slide, it's fantastic. And you can definitely notice the intended notes during most screams, your work does not go unnoticed Spencer!
Thank you for doing this! Periphery is one of my favourite bands of all times, this is so cool! I had the honour of seeing them live in 2013 in Vienna, I was in the front row. I legit remember hearing Spencer's voice way louder from his own mouth than I did from the speakers. He really is something else!
This collab is the highlight of 2021 imo & it's only the beginning of March. Crazy to see just how akin your approaches to harsh vocals are despite your totally different backgrounds
So much truth in screaming with emotion, the difference is huge. Every time I don't let the emotions take over me I feel always like I am holding back, almost as if I was tight. Now I think it is good to practice without emotions because you sort of need that to learn the boundaries of your voice, or technique if you will. However whenever performing or simply want to have fun, let the rage and suffering consume you. Great video, love it. Good job as always Chris... By the way, I like the chemistry between you two. As if you were brothers, seems you found a friend for life.
wow, for years i had this thought that something about Spencer's singing sounds a bit like Davey Havoc to me (sometimes he does a similar thing on the end of notes, that lite abrupt stop of breath that almost sounds like a high pitched scream, and the phrasing, the heavy transients, the raspy mixed voice) ... and now when he mentioned AFI in the first minutes of this video it all clicked. awesome.
this is really great, you two have good chemistry together and I love how you get into the nitty gritty nuances of singing without shying away from it. I think anyone trying to sing, or is currently singing, will benefit a lot from signing up for this course
Thank you so much for these Chris! I’ve been making music during quarantine and I’ve been trying to blend rap with screaming. Your videos have been extremely helpful so I ever make into music I’ll be sure to give you a shout out. Also Periphery was a huge inspiration for writing so these videos with Spencer are a real treat!
This is amazing! So glad to see Chris doing so well, and couldn't be more deserved. Chris has completely transformed my singing (and screaming :D), so pumped for these courses with Spencer!
I've been singing along to Periphery in ny car since the P1 days. Its super dope that thats where Spencer started. And though I don't have the balls to show anyone outside my girlfriend and a few friends I'd say I have a weird mix of Spencer, Phil Bozeman of Whitechapel, Dan Tompkins of Tesseract, with a touch of hip-hop vocals like Lupe Fiasco and Charles Hamilton.
Thank u Chris that every time in video you trying to surprise us with amazing guests) P.S. Sorry for english, i m from Russia, it s not my native language)
I'm really bummed at myself because I've been singing for like 15 years but have only been using proper technique for the last year or so. Now I not only have more confidence when I sing, but my range has increased to nearly 5 octaves! Thank you Chris for showing me the proper way to sing and for having one of my favorite vocalists on to show us his ways! Hope in the future you could get devin townsend on here too 😉
