This is important: Corey especially during the Iowa recording never paid attention to techniques, he was literally just screaming with distortion until his vocal chords broke. This is actually why it sounds so good, the human brain subconsciously picks up the difference between fake screams and real screams and no matter how much you train you just won't reach the same intensity as a real scream. Be careful, obviously.

Amazing work breaking down how to sing like Corey Taylor in a healthy way. And for anyone else who's reading this, remember. Even Taylor had a very hard time developing his voice! He had a lot of trail and error, and even though I can't find the specific interview he said that he had months after a concert, tour and recordings where he couldn't even speak afterwards. Even the semi clean song "Through glass" from Stone Sour's - Come what(ever) may album, he said that the sound he was going for in that album ruined his voice so bad that the idea of going on a release tour was very slim. Which is why hearing it live now is a much different experience, and even Taylor loved the recorded sound, he wouldn't even try risking his voice to do that. Which is why people should be careful not to imitate others and do it in a unhurtful and healthy way. And even with the amazing details and work of Chris Liepe should be added together with a good vocal coach who can supplement the training and correct you if you're subconsciously doing something that might hurt your voice further down the road. And a paraphrase from Oren L. Brown "You can learn a way of singing that can ruin your voice in minutes, and then have to spend years to fix the damage, so it's best to learn how to sing in a healthy way to begin with"

Ya certain voices are gravely and raspy just by nature. Could be lots of different factors. But ya speaking voices that are gruff and raspy definitely produce natural grit when singing as well!
Corey Taylor smoked and drank for ages... Probably damaged them in some way even from early Slipknot, before his voice really took center stage technicality way...
He must have been born screaming and growling, and learned the clean voice later in life lol. Like he can't even help but growl when he sings. The Through the glass performance during his solo concert in London is a prime example.

I'm not exactly a complete beginner or an intermediate vocalist, but I messed around with my voice a good bit trying to figure out Corey Taylor's screaming technique last night and this afternoon, and now after reviewing and practicing the techniques in this video, I can say that I have a good grasp on how to do it without hurting my voice. I feel like I could do this for an hour and it still would feel and sound phenomenal! Big ups to you, Mr. Liepe, you're a legend.
Dude you are such an amazing teacher! actually the best teacher for distortion and grit i've found. The comment about letting your voice break and crack is absolute money and has helped me personally sooo much!
Right?! I'm a grunge/riot grrrl vocalist, I scream a lot. Last year I had massive issues with my voice so I kinda started over... Chris' videos on screaming are the best on YT, no joke. Most of screaming you tubers are like "Oh I don't know if I should tell you this, but oh maybe I will... Do this, do that and here's the scream". Yeah, thanks dude. Thanks Chris for your videos, I find them extremely helpful!
Bro I've never seen anyone describe it in this manner I never thought I would be able to scream at all. The whole start broken and ease into the distortion makes so much sense. It's almost like backward singing but somehow it's so powerful
I love this series (along with the rest of your channel). What you're doing has helped me learn so much about this instrument that I am. I would love to see another one of these on: Trent Reznor (NIN) Mike Patton (Faith No More, Bungle) Marcus Bridge (Northlane) Josh Homme (QOTSA) Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Black Queen)
This is one godsent piece of advice, appreciate it! It took me sooo many years of wrecking my throat to realize that its not about how much pressure and energy you can apply, but about how to put on just enough pressure to stabilize the vibration. I like to compare false cord usage to biceps curls. Instead of hulking the weight up with a bad shape, have a controlled motion, one of steady force. There's this one weak spot on the curl, right after 1/3 of the lifting motion, which you shouldnt rush over, but work through since thats where the gain is at. Thanks for sharing Chris =)
This is nuts my dude. Thank you for putting yourself out there and not being afraid to look kinda silly when explaining all this. I've always had a meatloaf voice and could never growl for 20 seconds without coughing everywhere. It makes so much more sense now.
Was really excited to see this pop up just now. Learned not to do Corey's stuff the hard way, it's really fun but you're completely right about the screwing up your voice part
I like how honest he is in the title like hey you need some experience come back later. I like how he only wants to give us the right info (that at least works for him) so we may become better vocalists and I respect that
In left behind Corey actually was just yelling, not really using any technique, he’s lucky he can even sing and scream today with how bad his method was
This is really what I've been looking for. A lot of "how to" metal/extreme vocals tutorials don't actually explain how to practice it. It would be awesome to get something like this on Devin Townsend's ability to effortlessly shift between clean and dirty, sometimes transitioning mid-chord into the dirty or clean vocal.
Awesome!! It’s true he changed his screams with the years... because in the beginning he was literally screaming of anger and pain, he destroyed his voice, but that gives that special touch to his music. Now we need Spencer Sotelo (Periphery) and Tommy Rogers (Between the buried and me). And why not, Cedric Bixler Zavala too!!
So much priceless knowledge!! Been watching your channel for a while now. Some of the ways you get your grit really remind of Chester Bennington. Thank you so much for doing what you do! Looking forward to much more content to come.
I came to this video looking to learn a bit about how Corey uses fry screaming and false vocal cords. After so many videos, I'm still not clear on the sensation of the false vocal cords, but I believe I've learned to produce a much more powerful fry scream. It just clicked. I'm not sure if I'm mixing the two techniques or if I just managed to project the fry better, but it was very helpful, it sounds great, and I feel it's healthier than before. Thank you very much for your free content
In somewhat the same vein as Corey Taylor, I'd love to see if you could show us the techniques Mike Patton uses. That dude is insane and still sings just as aggressive today in his 50s. Those banshee whistle screams are crazy and no one seems to have any real knowledge on it. Would love to hear your input!
It's so much fun to see someone analyze an other's vocal range and techniques, especially someone like Corey. This channel is awesome and I personally think it should be up top, because you nail most of them to be so close to be them. My bows to you sir, and since you asked, I've been wondering.. I know you probably don't speak german, or who knows.. but Till Lindemann's voice from Rammstein sounds sometimes so brutal, and I'd love to see you analyze him especially in the song "Puppe". Thank you for these!
Brother, you have been a godsend, from the way you teach and inform, to how you give multiple and progressive examples, all the way to being immediately motivated to applying and sharing your techniques and breakdowns. Thank you, Maestro Leipe, thank you! And uh, Chad Grey from Mudvayne (Lost and Found album, specifically the songs Forget To Remember and Choices) if you feel up to the challenge! Lol
the dying cat and the crazy clown from other of your content (and a lot of other videos of this chanell) made me sing the high c in mixed/chest voice. till this day i thougt, that I am a high baritone. thank you chris liepe
not a vocalist, but love watching your videos. entertaining and awesome singing! you should do more full out covers (would love to see a full on Slipknot cover!)
For real though I'm kind of binging a lot of these videos, I was looking for a online vocal instructor that was good at singing, cared about mainly male voices (bc I'm a male) and was not scared to post videos about meatal. Because I first started off with Ken tamplin but he did not want to hurt any one voices so he would not teach screaming and stuff. Truly amazing you bald headed masterpiece
Hey dude I friggen love your stuff here. You are very good at articulating what it is that's happening. Slipknot and Corey Taylor specifically are how I learned to scream some other influences being Chimaira and Children of bodom. But youv helped highlight differences especially screaming with pitch. I'm pretty happy with my scream technique though I know I go harder than I should on my pitch less scream but it's a comfort zone now for me. NOW. I would very much appreciate you highlighting Corey Taylor singing "From can to Cant" You are an incredible vocalist and teacher. Thanks Love you!!
This video popped up on my feed and then I binge watched the back catalog of this channel (at work... don't tell my boss). The youtube algorithm is evil, but sometimes works wonders. Oh, and if I can suggest a singer to analyze, it would be Spencer Sotelo from Periphery. I'm currently obsessed about the band and specially him.
What an amazing in-depth analysis, Chris! I've been more of a "silent watcher" of your channel, just watching, liking and learning for myself but so far you have covered some of my MOST favourite singers with such an amount of detail... that I just have to thank you! My singing abilities have sky-rocketed through your videos! Corey Taylor, Jared Leto, Chester B., ... great stuff. Some other singers you might be interested in (and which I admire deeply): - Daniel Tompkins of "Tesseract" check out their songs "Hexes", "Phoenix"(some super delicious falsetto!), or "Smile" from their recent release (also amazingly high notes). Daniel is one of the most gifted singers in the modern Prog-Scene to me. - Benjamin Burnley of "Breaking Benjamin", love the way he darkens his voice, too. - Pete Loeffler of "Chevelle", (cool songs are: "The Clincher", "Well enough alone" or also "Sleep Apnea" In fact, I believe that you and Pete sound very much alike, technique and register-wise, and he perfectly displays the things you teach. His high-pitched screams, bright and slightly nasaly singing (in a good way! :) ) to get powerful and wide-open high notes, for example, are some things I now recognize after watching your videos. Have a good one. - Benjamin
Big hello from Moscow Chris 😉 I learned clean vocal for 2 years and now I started to learn extreme techniques with my teacher. I very love Corey’s songs and of course to sing it because I’m baritone too) And the little tricks that you’re talking about helps me to understand better how to do it without hurting myself. I don’t know why on some videos there are not a lot of views but thanks youtube for recommending your channel. In next videos I would like to see analysis of Scooter Ward from “Cold” and maybe an analysis of individual songs of Slipknot and Stone Sour or another great rock and metal bands. You doing a great interesting videos and I watch it with wide eyes open) Sorry for my English) With respect and best wishes, Alex.
Man, you changed my life, thank you so much... My day was a complete sh*t, then I've seen this video... I still can't understand the screaming part, I'm a complete noob on that, but, the clean vocals?! I've been trying to sing like Corey for 5 years... And now I can do it! I have o to practice a lot yet, but I can do I, finally! Thanks again, you have a new subscriber, salutations from Brazil!
Do M. Shadows from avenged sevenfold next!!! The chorus of the song "the stage" has a crazy build up from chest to mix to a really high distorted low mix. I really would love to hear your tricks to seeing what he does as hes my favorite vocalist
Again, such an amazing demonstration and example provided into how people use their voices. Impersonation done me in for a few years because I realised I was trying to copy/impersonate very overly produced sounds that use compression, or reverb effects for example. I started going back to more raw recordings, like Chris Cornells live version of songs, and that gave me a more 'realistic' sound. Alongside Chris' amazing RUclips videos on how to use your voice correctly, I've really been able to use my own sound to get where I am today. Thanks Chris for your time and effort in creating these thoughtful videos, really ❤️
almost two years later, I discovered this video (and very cool channel) literally 20 mins after watching the Marvel “What If…” ep 5. the 9 min mark sounded like that episode and it just killed me. 😆
You’re so awesome man, I’ve been wanting to learn how Corey does it for many years now! Also I love when you are able to laugh at yourself with that scooby doo false chord break haha. A great vocalist has no embarrassment hehe.
Man those examples with the cracking point of the voice were gold , I can now understand where I need to be in order to put more character in my screams. Chris your help is totally enlightening , my vocal coach fell in love with your videos too when I showed her the tension free advice you gave with the dumbbells parallel. Thank you wholeheartedly for what you're doing!
Hey Chris, I love to see these types of videos. Looks like you have tons of suggestions in the comments already but I would love to see a video of some of my favorite vocalists: Ann Wilson, Adam Gontier, or Danny Worsnop. Keep up the great content!
The problem with Hetfield is in the early years he blew his voice out alot, that's why his voice changed so much during the 90s and 2000s, he seemed to be finding technique. You probably could learn how to do James vocals of the early years using different taught techniques without fucking your voice the same way if somebody who knew what they were talking about showed the right way rather than an imitation of those early years
Chris Liepe I think that I can sing, I was doing jam sessions with my guitarist friend for about a year, we went to this music workshop, and we were placed in a band. I have trouble writing lyrics. And even when we had them, I forgot them and stuttered in front of people. That was two months ago, I guess I was trying to sound like someone I’m not, I want to be in a metal band, but I’m not sure if it sounds good enough. I want to do normal singing and frying but I feel like I’m lacking confidence and people to actually care enough to appreciate the music, even if I sound crappy.
Cool video man!! Corey Taylor is a beast!! I've seen him live and he killed it! On the records or live he is a great singer. I have covered couples Slipknot songs but i never be able to sing like Marilyn Manson back in the 90s (antichrist superstar ) his distortioned voice and high pitch were so hard to sing. I would like to see you explaining his weird vocal technique one day. Thanks for yours lessons!
Worth noting is that he had actually fucked his voice after Iowa era. Great video it is insanely informative. I have been waiting for it for a long time. I am kinda unsure on how to use the larynx to put it in different possitions and it is kinda hard as for now, but knowing how he does it is helping big time! Thanks Chris!
Would love to see a breakdown of Oli Sykes from Bring Me The Horizon. Specifically his insane screams from Sempiternal and his newer blend of screaming and singing from That's The Spirit and Mantra. He had to have vocal surgery after Sempiternal so it'd be great to see what we can do to sound like that but avoid destroying our vocal chords.
It’s the same false chord scream Corey uses. It’s just his voice is different toned. He changed it to that technique after what he used to do caused major problems for his performance. What he isn’t saying in this video is you can apply false chord screams to singing tones, or apply more pressure for a full on scream
Wow, this actually really helped me a lot. For the longest time, I was trying to do Corey Taylor's screams with intense compression, and I could never sing the right pitches. I never thought to do an open false chord.

I would love to see another one of these on:
Trent Reznor (NIN)
Mike Patton (Faith No More, Bungle)
Marcus Bridge (Northlane)
Josh Homme (QOTSA)
Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Black Queen)
Yes!!!’ Trent and Greg
This is one godsent piece of advice, appreciate it! It took me sooo many years of wrecking my throat to realize that its not about how much pressure and energy you can apply, but about how to put on just enough pressure to stabilize the vibration. I like to compare false cord usage to biceps curls. Instead of hulking the weight up with a bad shape, have a controlled motion, one of steady force. There's this one weak spot on the curl, right after 1/3 of the lifting motion, which you shouldnt rush over, but work through since thats where the gain is at. Thanks for sharing Chris =)
YES INDEED. The parallel between singing (especially aggressive singing/screaming) and weight lifting is real. So much to be learned and drawn from!
Man I love your videos....not only educational, but entertaining. Always leave having learnt something and having had a good laugh.
This is nuts my dude. Thank you for putting yourself out there and not being afraid to look kinda silly when explaining all this. I've always had a meatloaf voice and could never growl for 20 seconds without coughing everywhere. It makes so much more sense now.
What about Devin Townsend? I'd love to see someone explaining what he's doing in depth like this.
I second this!
YES!!!
Also would love a video of Devin
Man you are one of the best teachers online
Was really excited to see this pop up just now. Learned not to do Corey's stuff the hard way, it's really fun but you're completely right about the screwing up your voice part
I like how honest he is in the title like hey you need some experience come back later. I like how he only wants to give us the right info (that at least works for him) so we may become better vocalists and I respect that
In left behind Corey actually was just yelling, not really using any technique, he’s lucky he can even sing and scream today with how bad his method was
No that's not true
just starting a metal band and corey is my fav voice, so its very informative. have to work on my singing fundamentals a bit more though
It's always a pleasure to see you doing these kinds of videos! You are a lost gem in the RUclips vocal coaching scene, man. Keep up the good work!
Very cool to watch this. Corey is one of the vocalists that got me to want to do what he does. Left Behind is a great one to sing along to. 😊
Right on! Thanks so much.
Lol
Or Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria. Probably more your range and comfort zone. 😁
Here’s Claudio! ruclips.net/video/gOiMrMI1zFI/видео.html
Thank you, my good sir! You're da man!
Thank my friend Corey Taylor is my favourite singer and I really wanted to sing like him so thank you mate
This is awesome! Absolutely love Corey Taylor, and you ended with one of my favorite stanzas from one of my favorite songs.
Awesome! :)
Ive never thought , He is the only one who can teach me about this..
the dying cat and the crazy clown from other of your content (and a lot of other videos of this chanell) made me sing the high c in mixed/chest voice. till this day i thougt, that I am a high baritone. thank you chris liepe
this is all very great news. thanks for sharing !! :)
I've been searching for a video like this for months!! So glad you made it. Very helpful!!
not a vocalist, but love watching your videos. entertaining and awesome singing! you should do more full out covers (would love to see a full on Slipknot cover!)
Thanks so much! :)
Haha! Well glad you found me :)
NOW. I would very much appreciate you highlighting Corey Taylor singing "From can to Cant"
You are an incredible vocalist and teacher. Thanks Love you!!
Right on! Thanks so much! :)
Welcome to the channel :)
YEEEEEE!!! I love Corey's vocal. Thanks for this lesson
The airflow tip was the best thing i got from this
What an amazing in-depth analysis, Chris!
Some other singers you might be interested in (and which I admire deeply):
- Daniel Tompkins of "Tesseract" check out their songs "Hexes", "Phoenix"(some super delicious falsetto!), or "Smile" from their recent release (also amazingly high notes). Daniel is one of the most gifted singers in the modern Prog-Scene to me.
- Benjamin Burnley of "Breaking Benjamin", love the way he darkens his voice, too.
- Pete Loeffler of "Chevelle", (cool songs are: "The Clincher", "Well enough alone" or also "Sleep Apnea"
In fact, I believe that you and Pete sound very much alike, technique and register-wise, and he perfectly displays the things you teach.
Would like to see a lesson about chino Moreno voice 🙏and more about Chirs Cornell
Thanks for the sub!!
12:14 : Actual sound of me going through puberty
anyway great video, very informative
I like the breakdown. Gives me another perspective to heavy vocalists.
I can’t help but to think Patrick when you do the relaxed first scream
Just found this. Thank you for acknowledging Corey Taylor. His voice is fascinating, my favorite. Loved watching you and your expertise. Rock on...
I think it’d be cool to see a breakdown on Marcus Bridge, the vocalist of Northlane!
Thanks for the uploads, Chris
Cheers
almost two years later, I discovered this video (and very cool channel) literally 20 mins after watching the Marvel “What If…” ep 5. the 9 min mark sounded like that episode and it just killed me. 😆
18:03 sound like cj to me but in a higher tone
AHAHAHHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAH
Finally someone does this! THANK YOU!
I would like to see more false chord tutorial, I think it's gonna be a great knowledge
Hell yeah! Hope my suggestion convinced you, thanks so much for this video.
Omg, corey Taylor, he's so amazing
These are next level trainings! Really appreciate you bro.
Thanks so much!
Hey Chris, I love to see these types of videos. Looks like you have tons of suggestions in the comments already but I would love to see a video of some of my favorite vocalists: Ann Wilson, Adam Gontier, or Danny Worsnop. Keep up the great content!
Thank you Chris!! I won the Knotfest’s jam with Jay contest because of this exact lesson.
Can you please do the same thing for James hetfield from Metallica?? He had an awesome voice during the late 80s
His voice from 1989 to 1991 was so powerful
Yes!!!
The problem with Hetfield is in the early years he blew his voice out alot, that's why his voice changed so much during the 90s and 2000s, he seemed to be finding technique. You probably could learn how to do James vocals of the early years using different taught techniques without fucking your voice the same way if somebody who knew what they were talking about showed the right way rather than an imitation of those early years
your wish is granted
Bro I just signed up for the voice lessons I’m so pumped
Nice!! Welcome to the journey!!
Ronan Ciarulli omg yes!! Do marilyn Manson!!
Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills next would be amazing, Chris :D This analysis on Corey was fantastic btw
Thank you so much for this!!! I have been searching everywhere for this video, but now it finally exists!!! Thank you!!! It was really helpful!😭🖤
Awesome Videos per usual, would you be interested in doing a Punk, Pop Punk Vocal "Guide/how-To" For example Green Day, Blink-182, Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday. Or some heavier stuff like Rise Against, Senses Fail? Thanks!
Who knew Scooby-Doo was so metal! Lol nah, but you're explanation of using the "break" is a trick I've never heard before.... And it helps!
