- Today I’m out running a real plumbing call. I’m going to show you how to build and install 2-way cleanouts from my point of view. I’ve seen 2 way cleanouts built differently from this, but this to me is the best way to build them, because it makes testing the sewer system very easy and accurate. Have you ever had to install 2 way cleanouts? Let me know in the comments!

Roger, love the videos. One question I have is when you are working with pvc on a horizontal ( or vertical) run in this video I see for instance you use a sureband on the one side and on the other end your are going right into the hub of the wye clean out. How do you get enough clearance to go into the hub and only use one sure band. And not two. I sometimes have trouble with getting the proper fit and not having a gap on one side of the pipe. Maybe you could a do a video on pipe clearance. I hope you understand my question and look forward to your response. Thank you for your time
@Roger Wakefield why not use a tee? Why 2 wye's? Here in Oklahoma (BOOMER SOONER) we use tees and schedule 40 nothing less I'll be honest I hate it when guys like you use wye's for c/os
@Top Dead Center yes that's plumber language it's technically called a sanitary tee but using 2 wye's in Oklahoma isn't code it has to be a sanitary tee aka 2-way cleanout
@Top Dead Center I'll be damned..... My boss used to do plumbing in Vegas back in the day.. I like watching plumbing videos because I like to know what's code in other states but ya man straight up here we use San ts we have to use a no hub if we put a new cleanout in. We have to use a saddle tee and silicone when we do our taps here as well. On water heaters if theirs no drain for the pan we have to install a pan alarm (which is totally new here)
@Roger Wakefield can you do a video on how pvc bonds work and what can ruin or make a good bond?
Everyone complaining he takes too long, I think he's just taking his time to show people his way of doing and giving time to explain a little. Better than rushing thru and not being able to see his work.
Skilled tradesmen will take there time and think things through..
Could have done it right in 45 minutes... Sure... But can he guarantee that work for years... Nope....
When I worked underground water and sewer we always rounded down 15 minutes when charging people...
It allowed us time to double and triple check things with out gouging are prices...
Charging was always done in 15 minute intervals...
As a new apprentice. I'm soaking it all in.
I’m an apprentice as well so all this information is a blessing!
@@jamesruppert3152Anyone who talks like that is no good at what they do.
12:03 is typically the time the homeowner would flush the toilet.
Yep and that is after you ask them nicely not to and reminded them again when they came outside to watch you 10 minutes ago
That’s why you shut the water down and flush the toilets 1st don’t give them the option it will haunt you!
It’s good to see someone take pride in their work like this plumber does. The world is a better place because of him and those alike.
Keep up the good work!
I love the idea of dual directional snaking clean outs, brilliant. I love plumbers who take pride in an exceptional job.
always cool to see the big boss getting in the trenches and doing the work himself occasionally, there are too many people just talk about it but never seen doing it, but he can walk his talk
Yes agree talk is easy do real field work not easy 👍👍👍👍
Hate it when an inspector rolls up on you and he (or she) is 25yrs younger than you, fresh out of college and figured working for the city would be a great job. They always try to impress you with all
The "book knowledge" they have retained and have never been "in the trenches"! As any experienced plumber knows, there are many ways to to install plumbing "to code".
I agree, and to many inspectors they’re not qualified for inspection, I’m electrician and I kick (knowledge)couple stupids inspectors Milpitas, Salinas, and S.F. And a PG&E guy also, they have before the green book and they don’t know the requirements for periscope higher without braces 👍😊😊
Mario Alvarado Bay Area municipalities have a lot of “My kid needs a job” hires, which leads to bad inspections, or inspectors with no experience and a major power trip. I see it plenty in my service area.
@@eddiekalista3222 Glad someone else agrees with me!👍
God, you know Rodger is "old school"when he deburrs the pipe
With a file!
Huh?? Every inspector I’ve meet is from the trenches. Don’t hate baby don’t hate
I just spent 25 mins of my life watching a man install pipes and I don't regret a second of it. Excellent content thank you
Wow, thanks!
Oh my God I thought I was the only one that did that with the lettering everybody looks at me like I'm crazy but it is something that my father taught me and that I have always done and I've been a plumber for 30 years now, it is great to see how much pride you take your work I'm glad to see there's others out there P.S. I just purchased one of your new face mask can't wait for it to arrive
Learned that day one, when you have inspectors inspecting your work you make sure they can see letters.
in Australia it is a requirement to have letters facing up in drainage and letters facing down in aerial drainage
Letters up always..inspectors love it in Florida
It’s Sunday and I get home from a emergency drain call to go one RUclips and watch plumbing videos... what am I doing... 😂😂😂
I DO THE SAME THING LOL
I'm a tow truck driver and I do the same damn thing only with tow trucks 😂
Just did that today hahaha
Only plumber I’ve ever seen actually chamfer the outside like you’re supposed to. Keep up the good work! I’m not a professional but I do it myself.
22 minutes and 10 seconds there's moment to see the entire assembly. Nice video. Thank you
Our boss will never leave the shop that shows the difference on someone who really like the trade. Wish we had a digging crew too😢😂
Yeah i won't work for someone who won't get as dirty as me . My boss should be willing to do anytbing he asks of me . Then me and the boss will be best friends .
James Waycaster you’d like your boss waste time mucking around with you rather than ensuring there is work for tomorrow, next week, next month.
Brendan Nolan My boss does both he comes out to the field and stays in the office 🤷🏻♂️ & we stay busy, he’s the chillest boss ever!
@Adrian chillest. WTF
James Waycaster. Your boss does not need to do what he asks of his employees that’s why he is the boss, He already put his time in, Also he hired you because he wants employees not friends!
I’ve used many good trade practices roger has demonstrated on this yt channel . They have have helped ten fold. Inspecters always compliments work and appreciates the little things . Thanks Rodger for helping us become better Plumbers and tradesmen. Much respect
If I ever gain the courage to leave California, I wanna go work for this man. Probably the coolest boss ever.
I am a licensed electrician and I've never enjoyed watching a plumber work before till I came to your channel! Great work.
The whole letters thing: great approach; never thought of that. I did electrical construction back in the day and my boss had us put wall plates on with the screws going vertical. Is a nice touch that the homeowner (or inspector) showed that you paid attention to even the smallest detail (plus it looks totally rad). I admit I haven't done this with PVC but you bet I am going to start. Thanks for the tip, Mr Roger.
This is why I like to watch his videos cause the things he does are encouraging and some of the things he does videos about have helped me many times
So thank you roger
Love the video. I'm in southern California and residential sewer are 99% ABS before the clay transition. And Roger is correct always apply the glue while the primer is still wet.
Flawless Roger. At one point I was saying "wait, you're going to glue that clean out before you drop that riser?" And... yes you did. Looks clean. No purple lightning. Letters all facing the same way and visible from inspector point of view. Nice.
Im just relieved that even a pro like Roger spills a little primer when he opens it too
Enjoyed your video. I do them differently but as long as it works.
After 39 years its still a great trade.
17:20 glad he put the mic in the pipe so we could hear that saw. I now know what he does is serious and not some kind of twisted joke.
Manufacturer states to apply solvent while primer is still wet. Never let that primer dry up. You're doing it right.
Roger I’m a plumbers apprentice in Canada my dad is actually the owner of his own company so I get criticized more than anyone’s your videos help me a lot to answer you question here in Canada at least Ontario we use abs some pvc but very little
Thank you for another quality video @RogerWakefield!
I really enjoy watching and learn from your plumbing videos
Every home needs clean outs like this. They make life much easier
Is a pleasure to see a true plumber work and that knows how to do it right the first time.
And it amazes me to see you that you are never afraid of getting dirty. And on top of that you are always very well dressed up even your jeans have a line great job.
Here in San Diego we typically use ABS on residential homes. Construction on high rise buildings when I was in the union we were still using cast iron. The only time I installed schedule 40 PVC we used it for a school. I think for big construction the reason why we used different type of pipes for drain was mainly for the budget of whoever was paying for the project. As a small business owner that mainly focuses on residential now I only use ABS for drains. Great channel Roger !
Great workmanship! I've watched a few of your videos, really impressed with your knowledge, work style and of course, the production of the videos. I'm a GC and I'm always scrounging to find a good plumber - or any Tradesman for that matter. You win this award for this work sir!
If Rogers guys used that much primer, he would have a Monday morning meeting about how we are going thru primer too fast and our overhead is out of control 😂
😂😂😂
Nha. Every job is priced with glue and primer in the bid. If you’re not charging for it in every job, you’re losing money. Hate to see what you’d have to say about dumping primer and glue right onto the pipe in a high water location.
Level 1 apprentice in Winnipeg Manitoba and we use all ABS for residential and PVC for commercial. XFR PVC as well in places that require it.
He doesn’t want to have to dig it up and fix it again ever. Love the content
Here in Germany we have mostly PVC or Cast Iron Pipes, at least for buried sewage pipes. The PVC is not glued but comes with pre-installed rubber gaskets in the sleeves, so you just push them together. And they are orange-brown. The community sewage pipe is mostly made from PE nowadays.
Indoors the classic way is the gray HT-Pipe, which is made from polypropylene and can withstand temperatures up to 200°F/95°C.
This man is the lorax of plumbing keep up the great work!
Setting up to build a house.
This is great info to improve my plumbing plan.
I've never seen a double clean-out before.
Really??? It's an IPC standard now a days.
This guy is probably one of the best plumbers I have ever seen
Man, your company is right down the road from the company I work for, I’m off of Plano rd and 635, small world.
Great tutorial!!! Now I feel like I can do it!!! Excellent work!!!
this is cool, thank you for showing us this stuff, now i think i know how to do it, i working in the IT word and i do take a pride in the work when i working with the custumers.
Love these type of videos love to learn about this!
Good! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for your support and for leaving a comment!
He is meticulous about straight cuts and filing yet as far as I saw never primed the cut end that he held for 30 seconds. Not a plumber just thought it odd. Thoughts?
@@drucifer_too 🤷♂️
I am a drain tech and if I pulled up to a house that had a cleanout installed like this, I would be so happy. I usually cut 50 bucks off the service when the customers sewer has this configuration. It seems like every time there is a one way clean out it goes the wrong direction. When the cleanout has one of those two-way fittings the blockage is down stream, the riser is full and it's so deep that I have no way of telling which way the cable is going. Cutting the risers off so that the clean out body is above grade is also a great thing. I don't know many times I have had to run vents etc. because the clean out were buried or under snow. Why is your right hand so much stronger than your left? Never mind...Thanks for the vid!
I was confused with the PVC but I’m glad you explained it. We use ABS here California. I just did two way clean out in 6hr. Very good and clean video. Thank you.
Cali is like abs nobody likes it and it sucks. Hope you can make the same money in a free state
For everyone that loves straight tee or double eye clean outs. I was a drain cleaning professional for a while, a single tee or double wye cleanout sucks when you need to clean a drain and it’s full to the brim. Hard to tell if the cable is going out to the street or back Into the house. And those cables will break toilets if not careful.
Well in my line of work my dad taught me well in Irrigation Sprinkler systems clean work is the best work and I've learned plumbing from my dad also amazing work man cleaning the burrs off pipe, and you don't slop on primer its like watching my own dad work
We use mostly abs but I've used pvc here in California especially on long sewerlines due the the fact that pvc is more ridged then abs and I'm fighting for 1/4 per ft. We also can use pvc in commercial. I like the fact that you debured pipe so the glue actually gets in the joint
I like this perfect workmanship Thanks for the good lesson
Sponsored specifically by Oatey Primer. I appreciate your work.
Love that two way idea.
What makes Roger legit is the license clipped to his shirt ! Way to go, Roger !
If you tap the lid for the pvc primer/glue with something hard ( I usually use the base of the other can) it’ll open up nice and easy and you won’t have to use channel locks
Thanks for the video! I will be installing this on my septic lines this week.
PS: Love those starched jeans. Bring on the Wrangler sponsorship.
Here in Ontario Canada we mostly use abs but also use pvc depend what area you in but always use pvc for venting water heater or furnaces.
In Oregon we use ABS mostly under the home, and fairly frequently all the way to tap/septic. Other than that we use HDPE for pipe bursts and directional boring, and new construction tends to be ABS under the home and 3034 to tap.
Nice job we would most likely be using schedule 40 ABS in this particular situation here in CA some PVC is permitted to be used also
Good work you took your time is done right.
theyre nice for quickly feeding your machine a certain direction, but the down side is most cases you cant see the blockage clear while on the machine or see your progress while rooting, jetting etc.
Really enjoy these videos. I’m starting my apprenticeship next week and your channel has been a tremendous resource!
Just did this exact same thing today only difference was adapting over to cast iron nice work good to know texas and tn plumbers do it the same
What part of tn
@@Pornaphobia1 middle tn nash area
Another pro tip is to tape your cans of primer and glue together so they're easier to carry around. It's all the little things that can make a big difference to your efficiency and quality.
OHSA says you can't do that any more because you can't read the labels. I know it's stupid but most things they do are
@@magnoliaplumbing901 And like many things OSHA says we do the opposite in the real world.
Great Video! Love the attention to detail....
Residential construction plumber in phx AZ and out here it's pretty much all abs. I believe that some commercial work still use PVC but, I never done any commercial work
Still an excellent video 3 years later. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Being Professional pays.........you are very diligent. I like that...kuddos
In Alberta, Canada we use ABS for residential and PVC, XFR or cast iron for commercial. All depends on what the engineer wants. Usually PVC for drainage and cast or xfr for venting because of its fire retardant qualities.
Here in vegas we use schedule 40 abs , we also use pvc but most likely for commercial application .
Greta job. Looks like fun.
This is also a great idea for gutter drains to the curb
I'm from Central Indiana and I am going to be a plumbing apprentice soon, whenever I go on jobs most houses I've worked at have scheduled 40
Sched 40 is a rating for the thickness of the wall of the pipe.
Hay Roger. You’re the man with a plan! Thank you for the videos and advice. I’m a dreaded landlord. I had a duplex sewer line become blocked. A rooter guy finally cleared the drain. Video camera showed cast iron under the single story duplex concrete slab. A few feet after the slab the drain turns into ceramic. The video showed 3 ceramic joints have slipped with the worst choking the 4” line to about 2”.
The plumber guy wanted to sell me a $14-16k dual clean out system. I found this video which shows the job isn’t very difficult. So we’re going to do it ourselves. We’ve worked with PVC pipe before.
An ? However. The video shows you making the dual clean out manifold yourself. Pricing the job I found a built manifold. So, is there a real advantage to building the manifold vs buying one? Thanks for your work. From a fellow chrome dome’r.
Nothing like giving an apprentice a sawzaw for the first time and watching that pipe dance.
Hey Roger recently stumbled across your channel I live in California love your content and alot of the stuff you show my dad taught me he wasn't a plumber he was sheet metal but hung out with the plumbers lol
Thank you so much for this video. My husband and I have moved into our home 10 years ago. We have had plumbing issues since we moved in and we think that’s why the previous owners moved out! A couple of years ago We finally found the clean out and installed a pump in our septic, but we’re still having a lot of water. We’re not quite sure if we have a second clean out pipe or not. Your video was very informative because we thought maybe there was a leak under the house and we weren’t sure how we would even get under there now I see that it can be done and I’m sure it would be costly. Do you think this is something that a married couple could do together?
Thanks brother
❤ good father , thanks for everything you share !
Best video ever !!!
Perfect explanation!
100% !!!!!
Excellent video for sure.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks roger good show.
👍👍👍🖐 nice double sweep... Here in Cali we use ABS..
I like a quality job done vs. A time crunch and mess ups because of the time crunch. I really belive in making sure everything is good and time well spent. Quality is important as is attention to detail or you'll be back there fixing it for free when it breaks. Love ya Roger.
Appreciate the kind words, thanks for watching Andrew
Really good content and editing!!
You are pure expert, I learn so much from your videos... I just personally think you use too much primer, just from my experience I think a couple rounds with prime (just enough to get a couple layers on) and lots of glue is better than a lot of primer .
Never see two 3 in combos used like that we have a two way clean out tee that we use. But hell ya you still got in I always liked when my boss came out to the jobs. Lol
My area doesn’t use double combos really either. Lots of 2 way tees, and unfortunately lots of old school Kelley cleanouts that were popular during the 70s and 80s here.
Yep in Idaho it's either a one way or a standard t as a 2 way 🤔
Actually two combos is the proper way to install a two way clean out because when it comes a time to snake that mainline the cable has a natural way to feed down the proper direction in which he/she is trying to cable snake the mainline. A two way clean out fitting is an approved fitting but not necessarily the better application to use for a proper mainline in ground sewer two way clean out.
EC L my reasoning against double cleanouts is the same as my reasoning against Kelley cleanouts. Any drain cleaner worth their gloves should be able to feed the snake any direction without the other stuff
@@eddiekalista3222 but if your gonna install a new double direction clean out might as well install one that's effective. The customer gets his moneys worth with the double combo application
Nice and clean.
Is very helpful,i was thinking to order one for the job the im doing in my house now i will build one and save money
excellent job 👍
Sandpaper strip. Comes on a roll check it out. From Washington state abs only pvc sewer lines are very uncommon. Your truly JOAT (the handyman of course).
Great video sir!! 👍👏
Perfect work
Much appreciated
Great video Roger. What type of glasses do you use to record with?
Thank you sir!
@roger wakefield what is the name of the band you use to connect your pvc to pvc pipe because I've used ferncos and that doesn't look like one
I never used primer working out on shemya island in Alaska doing 4 in schedule 80 PVC up a 40 foot tower for electrical and a couple 1inch ones
thank you for sharing!
My pleasure!
We use Abs for sewer lines and pvc for storm drains here in Vancouver Bc.
Gotta get those boots dirty sometimes.👍You can learn a lot for the old dogs. Pass on those trade secrets.
good point!! my hearing is damaged. i attribute it to the Ridge 300 pipe threader and being inside building with machinery running
good stuff. look at 4:47. when u clean out the pipe make sure it does not touch anything. freshly primed pipe touched dirt...
