Non binding, non-gospel? Yet the best 808 tutorial in the world Ryan!! You are amazing! Precision 808 booms on fourths and fifths! Who would of thought of that? Genius!
Well thanks for coming by! And hey, if you're interested enough to watch, why not try making a beat. :) There's a link in the descriptions where you can download a trial of Reason and try things out for yourself. /ryan
havent used reason in 8 years or something, and believe it or not I actually remember that patch lol, it was my ''go to'' as well, for crunk beats, yes crunk lol
That pitch bend was crazy! Im definitely gonna use that in my next beat🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 im glad i re joined the reason community & got a copy of the daw. I like this community better than fl studio 😮💨😁
Even as an FL user (of over 10 years), I'm obligated to tell you that I am super jealous of the Reason Rack and plan on getting Reason+ so I can use it in FL. I even plan on replacing Sakura with FRIKTION.
All thanks! Coming from a user of reason since part 2 the information in this video is golden! Really impressed with the sound quality, and improved user friendly work flow! Reason is truly my favorite DAW!
I dunno if anyone is still replying to comments in 2021, but I have been following this video step by step and I'm around the 6:05 mark where he's telling us to disable Receive Notes in the Combinator. But my DAW isn't showing ANY devices when I hit Show Devices. Can someone help me out?
I really appreciate these tutorials. They are getting better and better, and help pull the curtain back and demystify certain aspects of music making that people generally over complicate. The Cheat Sheets and rack extension tutorials are invaluable, but I think your video on general sound dynamics are also incredibly valuable to hobbyist musicians like myself. In particular, your video on 'levels and clipping'... It was less about techniques & plugins, and more about visualizing whats under the hood. And that visualization really changed the paradigm in which I view/create and understand digital music making. I'd like to see you do a series on general sound dynamic 'fundamentals'... for example, after watching this video you demystified saturation quite a bit! I realize now how poorly I don't quite grasp the fundamentals of Distortion and Saturation... and how that relates to coloring and adding 'warmth'. Is there an opposite to 'warmth'? How do these principles apply to brighter/higher notes & sounds? And how all these principles during the process of music making are relative to what it's being played alongside with. Wishful thinking! Either way, thank you again for the videos! I'm looking forward to more :)
That turned out wonderful!! I got mad that I couldn't keep up w you but that's just holding myself to unrealistic standards, I will tell you I learned more from you during this video then I have anywhere else for making 808 Bass, so thank you!!
Clever with the Powerchords and Pitchdive! 😊 I'm still a loyal Reason Fan, with all up and downs around this Product/Company! But i'm still missing the old Logo 😓
It takes some work but reason is dope. The Bass Guitar patch is one of the best, coming from a bass player. Compress, edit, EQ for you specific feel of course.
I have the kick on the korg drum machine. And in the mixer i have the pulveriser on line1in the mixer and the kick in line 2 just like the tutorial but how come i can only hear the kick and not the pulveriser when i play keys
Awesome video, it taught me a lot of things for production I can apply in the software I already use and made me more familiar with what Reason uniquely has to offer. I look forward to using it more down the road!
I have Reason 9.X and still didn't have the 808 Bass Drum mentioned. I solved it by making sure I had the latest Factory Bank since I've upgraded several times since I bought Reason. So, I downloaded the latest one and replaced the banks and there it was!
This doesn't seem to work with Reason as a VST inside Ableton. The MIDI in Ableton just triggers a single Kong kick at the beginning and the Subtractor, but not the kick too, although I might be doing something incorrectly
Hey Scott, I just followed my own tutorial here but in Ableton to check and see if you're right. It worked just fine for me, though. So it does work in Ableton and the Reason Rack Plugin. There must be something you're doing incorrectly. Are you starting by dragging in a Combinator? Have you turn off the RPG-8's arpeggiator button? I've just saved a Combinator file from the version I did in Ableton for you. You can load this in the Reason Rack and see how mine differs from yours to find your error or you can just start making music with my version. /ryan :) drive.google.com/file/d/1z5A_ayO5j_5ISDw3OPn5FxcIdQrM0uQE/view?usp=sharing
@@ReasonStudios Incredible! Thank you for doing the legwork haha. I have a feeling I may have been doing something wrong. I'll check out your Combinator patch and see how you did it. Reason's 'orders of operation' are still throwing me for a bit of a loop, as in you have to add XYZ device before other XYZ device for them to work, but I'm warming up to it. Also the CV is a bit new for me although I get the concept fully. I requested access to the file- I'll check it out and report back!
@@ReasonStudios Well, your Combinator worked perfectly. I'm not entirely sure why mine wasn't working. I think I may have had a MIDI device at the end that was confusing things. Anyways, seeing how you did it was super helpful! Thank you for the effort and knowledge!
I can't find the 808 bass drum sample mentioned at 5:34. I'm running Reason 9.2.2 on a mac in the 30 day trial mode. Are these samples not included in the trial?
The Subtractor patch is in the Factory Sound Bank >> Subtractor Patches >> Bass >> Dirty South Sub. The 808 Bass Drum Sharp Attack sample is in the FSB >> Kong Patches >> Kong Sounds & Samples >> 808 Samples >> 808 Bass Drum.
Alternatively, if you click 'Factory Sounds' again after putting Kong in, then search 808 it'll come up. It uses a Kong filter when searching otherwise (since that is the flow of the tutorial).
im stuck when i do the bass part right but when i add the kong to and reset it and add the sharp drum on the one pad my bass doesnt play with the pads idk im so confused rn
Hey Anthony: Salute; running into the same problem here in 2019. Also, when I open the Combi programmer, I don’t see any of the devices. Did you by any chance find the solution ? Thanks. -Dave
I'm generally not too much of a fan of music that uses 808 basses but I'm looking forward to using it on more Neurofunk-style music where I think using kicks partially as basses can be a massive advantage.
Well informative. I never heard of this DAW until now. My preferred DAW has been Logic Studio 9, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 9 & 10+ Suite. Nevertheless, thanks for sharing.
This patch doesn't allow for polyphony with the kick. Is there a way to change it so that if, for example, I'm holding down the D for a whole note, I can then hit the E on the next and retrigger the kick without having to note off?
I followed every single step. Yet, it seems there is a phaser turned on somewhere. After several loops (4 bar loop) the squash sound and the saturation is getting less and then slowly returns. I have turned every knob, yet no succes. Does someone have a tip or trick to fix this? I am using Reason 11.
Hi, first of all thanks for this great tutorial, however because i'm a beginner, i'm stuck on timestamp 10:10 (i generally understand the perfect interval root 4th,5th and octave) but on timestamp 10:10 where you have the arrows point 5th and 4th and 5th i count 9th for the first, 6th for the second and 9th for the last, i don't get it :s

Prince Rolland you damn right!! I'm going to copy every step done in this video and save it as a patch!
I'm with you on that one bro
Prince Rolland been using it for years but ppl really sleep on the Thors 808 bd you can achieve all the pitches without going through all of this

I don't care how many times I watched this over the years, it is still one of my favorite reference videos from Reason Studios!!!
Wow, I've been using Reason for years and learned soo much in this video! Please keep the hip-hop tutorials coming
I don't use Reason, but this was a really well made and useful video no matter what DAW.
Never ever!
Yeah I use sonar but its basically just sub-bass with saturation tube doubled with a kick
Don't DAWscriminate
This series is great, really topnotch advice and tricks. This guy should get his own Masterclass!
That "Sharp Attack" loop is in with the 808 stuff from Peff, not the Factory Sounds, if you're looking for it.
Peff's stuff is part of the factory sounds now in Reason 9. /ryan
As it SHOULD be! I'll update eventually...
Glen McQuestion thanks, I was looking so hard for it lol
I can't find this loop. When I search for it, the 808 folders appear but they won't open. They seem to be empty...
Is that he loop that plays at 2 min mark? Cause I got an idea for it
AMAZING tutorial! One of the most comprehensive tutorials I've seen for anytNice tutorialng. Thanks so much!

I use to only use Reason, but now I only use it for the racks and sounds. Utilizing rewire in Ableton is now my setup. Love both.
For anyone who can't find the 808 kick sample: Click 'Factory Sounds' again, which will clear the search from only looking at Kong tags.
