I came here to write the same thing! I was watching it, thinking how well this was put together. I can't say enough about how appreciated that is and needless to say, refreshing. This is the model of tutorial to beat!
Almost three years on: this popped up as I was doing something else and it is a really nice reminder of the depth of an instrument that I use all the time but forget other possibilities. Today I made 8 Game Sound Effects and barely used only of these options (not that I needed them).
ahah direct? yea press the tab button and looking at the back panel bringing a cable dragging froma a cv out to a cv in then press tab again wathc ad the modulation matrix and set the modulation... yea really direct and immediate ahaha
I had been using Reason since version 4 and see how has it grown since that version, is incredible. I used Reason 5 near of a decade (don't ask me why) but the last year I decided pay for Reason+ just for Europa, I mean , I love the all devices and the way to make music in Reason, but this device is another level. I love each update & new device you offer us, guys. ❤️
I watched to the very end and it's, actually, a really cool product. There is function and interface navigation that is intuitive and free of confusing sub menus. The movement that this synth achieves, just off of one engine, is incredible.
This is a fantastic wavetable synth - some of waves you can morph can get so complex, so fast... I really like this style if synthesis anyway and after Ableton made one and released it as part of the Ableton Live 10 Suite I’ve started to explore it way more than before. It’s like pure chaos at times, yet still sounds lush. Thanks to the processing power of today’s tech we’ve got it so good for synthesis at home
Interesting thing is I always used to do very similar things that Europa does since version 1 of Reason, now I just had a smile on my face while watching this video thinking about this same concept I always applied but in another way. I put for example a Subtractor and control it via Matrix, randomize Matrix pattern (or create my own "random" pattern) and play it, plug a cord from Matrix Curve CV to Subtratctor FM Amount and finally design a Matrix curve I like, it works better if Matrix is set to 32 steps.... so to effect becomes more noticeable I add flange and chorus to Subtractor and the result is something very similar to Europa. The way to create it is very similar to Europa too, the only difference is now I have all that steps in one single module, but concept and results are almost the same.
I LOVE these videos, but as someone who is just starting to experiment with Reason (because it came included in my very expensive college software package), it's incredibly overwhelming. Realizing that you can spend hours without scratching the surface is daunting, but also what makes it so fun! Thanks for making this!
hey Mercedes! Thanks for stopping by and I'm glad to hear you're getting some exposure to Reason in school. There is a LOT to learn, that's for sure but hopefully you can take it bit by bit and have fun along the way. We're all still learning, from self-experimentation and from each other too. That's part of the music-making journey. Welcome to it with us!! :) /ryan
Just saw Ableton Live released their version 10. I think Ableton has been reading the comments that Reason users have been writing. AL10 seriously just added 5 or 6 of the feature requests the Reason community has been begging for, some for almost a decade. And AL did it in 1 release. I know they don't have the Grain & 1,000,000 of the same drum sample pitched up and down to sound slightly different or the more appealing look that Reason has, but they knocked Reason out of the park on a head to head with the Ableton version of Release 10. THAT IS AN UPGRADE!!
but consider than ableton cost 479 now if you buy it until march 2018 and they have a completely different politic than propellerhead in fact every major upgrade comes in 3 or 4 years, so yeas ableton cost more but if you buy ableton 10 yyou wuill not see ableton 11 for at least 3 years and you will receive free minor upgrades from 10 to 11....
@Miss Controllerism My point is I love Reason and do not want to change DAWs. Live has made huge progress in both the workflow, sounds, instruments and effects in their Version 10, so it is possible. I would love to see PH make this type of progress and take the title of best DAW. If Reason added a few features from Live, Bitwig, Reaper, FL and Studio1 they would not only be listening to what their users have been asking for, they would become the best DAW out there.
Well, being a die hard Live user myself (actually: my setup consists of Live / Max for Live _and_ Reason (6))... I can tell you that AL10 also gets plenty of criticism from Ableton users who feel that it's not worth the upgrade in comparison to 9 ;)
Looking forward to the buy and download. I was running this through QUADS FX last night. Great video...though I only had time for the first 6 min. Lots to learn...
I was on the Beta test and I have to say that the filter in Europa is way better than in any of the other devices in Reason. I don't understand why you didn't allow for audio in to utilise the filter on external sources! Please consider adding that in or making a mini Europa filter box as a standalone effect, I guarantee I won't be the only person hoping for that. Cheers
The spectral filter in Europa is not an Audio Filter... it modifies the waveforms before they're rendered into audio... they've explained this in the live stream video... so what you're asking for is (sadly) not possible...
I'm not talking about the Spectral Filter, I'm talking about the standard filter. The MFB HP24 dB for example is way better than any other High Pass filter currently available in Reason. Then the options of SVF lowpass, Ladder lowpass, MFB lowpass and K35 lowpass as well as the band and notch filters.. they've got loads more character than the filters in Thor for example.
@@bud1390 It's entirely possible to do this kind of filtering by taking an FFT of the signal and then doing stuff with the partials like turning them up or down using some kind of mask like the multipoint envelope being used here.
I feel I owe Europa an apology, as I thought it was just another run-of-the mill synth compared to what Grain can do. The depth and control of Europa is amazing and seemingly as limitless as Grain is. Really impressive.
Yet another synth. I would love it if Propellehead focused more on innovating the sequencer. The ability to record changes to the mute on and off on the track lanes would be good and really help with creative real-time structuring.
RE makers can learn from this and the grain synth. Especially since the GUI is not scalable...... it has to be easy to read and easy to program these things. The layout of this synth is pretty remarkable. You can really change the sounds in a way not possible with a lot of these 70's revival analog synths with minimal effort. Propellerhead really knows how to heard its sheep. They already got my money, despite my reservations about 10 and paying for stuff I already have.
This synth is so fucking sexy I wanna throw Serum on garbage and use this instead. Too bad Reason doesn't support 32 bit OS anymore :( Actually I think I'm gonna make a Europa Serum skin hehe If anyone has good res images of the synth send me ;D
Nick Pa I guess you're kinda missing the point of a synth. If I want a sampler I use one. If you are talking about wavetables thought I don't know if you can import custom ones in Europa but I think at some point in the video they just said you could so... I pretty much only use Massive wavetables in Serum amyway, can't stand those one trick pony ones that comes with Serum
I see what you're saying. My thoughts are, we as musicians/artists should NEVER be limited, especially when it comes to creativity. If Europa had the ability to import samples like Grain does, that synth would be better than MASSIVE, IMO. Think about it logically. Eventually we will run out of sounds (may take a while) with only the given stock sounds. Now add the ability to import ANY sound you want on the face of this earth....I know you see where this is going.
I got reason five on my old Mac it’s fantastic but I use it sparingly as I would prefer to be more organic in my music, The newer versions seem to be so complicated and not musical in my opinion but still a great product, i’ll stick with Rfive for now
Reason is more than capable of making music as organic as you want. You dont have to use synth sounds, plenty of Guitars and other instruments in Reason.
This is a beast of a synth... I’m so glad Ableton 10 has the new Wavetable Synth included in the Suite Edition - otherwise I might have had to jump ship and give Reason a go lol
You might want to check out "Europa by Reason" - the new VST/AU version of this synth we release last week, which would run in any host of your choosing (Live, in your case)! /ryan
Just found it on plugin-boutique, where I get all my presets, VST/VSTi’s and remix stems for Traktors remix decks... and was pleasantly surprised at its price. One thing though -mI much prefer to have a small handful of carefully selected synths and effects, so I can explore them to the absolute max and learn to use them to their fullest opposed to having folders full of plug-ins in which I’ll maybe use the odd sound here and an effect chain there from each one sure, but over their lifetime. I don’t want to have 2 separate and by the looks of things, completely different Wavetable synthesisers at the same time, trying to get to grips with the power of both opposed to learning the one much more in-depth. That might change because right now this really does sound gorgeous- and it looks like it has a sound and robust workflow to it thanks to the pretty awesome GUI. I might give it a go - I think there’s a demo available to try out anyway so I’ll almost definitely check it out. Even though I’m not a Reason user and never have been, I want to give you a definite thumbs up for this monster. Certainly got my attention anyway. Again, cheers people !!!
Thanks for the nice words. You can also try it out with the other rather groundbreaking thing we launched the same day as this VST. On our website is a fully functional version of Europa that runs inside your browser and is playable from MIDI controller keyboard, and contains all the features of Europa by Reason. /ryan
A few suggestions for Europa update: 1) Macro controls like Thor has. Very often some synth parameter and combination of parameters sounds best with certain value ranges. Possibility to program and map best parameter combination for macro controls would be very useful - I think that modwheel is just not enough. I know that I can use combinator for this purpose, but in terms of fast workflow - dedicated macro controls directly on synth are better especially if I dont need to combine some other devices with Europa. BTW - Are there some combinator patches in Reason libraries which use only Europa synth ? Is it possible to filter them ? 2) Copy and paste engine settings. I didn't find ability to copy settings of one engine to another. This is very important while sound design - you may want to use second engine with same settings and make small modifications. 3) PLEASE MAKE EFX PHASER LFO SYNCABLE AND LOCKABLE Europa's phaser sounds amazing. I was able to get really tasty chord stab based on phaser. But I didn't find how to sync phaser LFO rate with song. Also I am missing ability to lock LFO phase on key retrig - this is very important feature for modulated stab sounds. Initially I thought that I am able to make this in mod matix - route some modulation source to phaser frequency, but this parameter does not exist directly. It seems it is only internal and hidden to user. Anyway thanks for such a great synth ! It boosts my creativity a lot !
All 5 plus parsec from subtrctor to malstrom to parsec 2, need to be constantly upgrased, also old efects too. Tanx for 12.7 update and free parsec 2 to upgrade from version one. I use reason from version 2, version 13 for 200 eur object, bvx vocodoer and i think reason 13 need new analag synth build in. I was ugrade from 7.3 to to 12.5 and for me is 200 eur nice investment, and some nice free rack extension, free vst plugin reason is beast. But my favorite for reason re are antidote, europa and parsec 2
The entitlement of a lot of these comments is insane. Y'all must be bored with your toys if some new crazy VSTs come out as an optional upgrade but "its not as good as the other vsts i already have" If you're upgrading from a much earlier version or buying Reason for the first time, this shit is a great addition If you don't use outside VSTs, this shit is a great addition If synths like Serum aren't already part of your main set of VSTs, this is a great addition Nobody complained when they added the pitch editing that it wasn't as good as Melodyne. Nobody complained about Radical Piano being added when they already have much better Piano libraries.
Does anybody know if there is a similar stand alone Desktop synth to Europa? From which synth was it inspired? I know some wavetable synth but i would love to have an Europa in My Hands!!!
"...Propellerhead's signature style of getting great sounds quickly through approachable controls." LOL, I don't mean to knock your product, but I never, ever met a control I couldn't approach.
What about that highly unsuccessful Trident console in 1984 whose knobs were covered in razor wire and which periodically squirted cholera-infected water at the mix engineer? That had some pretty unapproachable controls. ;) /ryan
As soon as the PH devs start listening to us paying customers, we will be able to zoom in and actually see what we are tweaking. I'm thinking by V15 or so. SMH.
@Delak 82 I'm very happy to hear you don't have any issues However, these video comments are full of Us users who are having difficulty being able to see the microscopic areas that we should be able to. PH needs to seriously think about stepping into current times with the DAW and many of its outdated and lacking features. Still enjoy Reason, just asking for simple updates.
New synths look awesome but its a bit confusing that this is a Major upgrade and VST support was a free upgrade... Are there any plans for real MIDI routing support? Currently we can't use VSTs that support multiple channels, we need to use one instance per VST... very annoying.
Does anyone know how the algorithmic waveforms compete with Serum's spectral morph or something similar w.r.t. efficient use of computational resources? I imagine they work in a similar way, but I'm hoping that Propellerheads has figured out some optimizations that can defeat Serum here. Because being able to load your own wavetables is extremely useful, but it comes at a cost that makes Serum almost unusable at high polyphony.
theres a spot where i recognized a dead point in this synth i forgot to report this to reason support.... or maybe it was a bug,...i should have screentshot it ,,, the proof ,and the format i used and where i saw this shortcoming from europa ... to others maybe they wont see it or understand it ... but i spotted it ,,, being since im doing a refill of this synth
I've been trying to like Europa but the lack of ability to import your own samples is so disappointing and frustrating. I hope Mattias pulls through and adds to only improvement it needs.
Something I want everyone to pay attention to... notice how in all these Propellerhead videos about plugins or Rack Extensions they always hide the DSP meter. Thats not by accident... Reason for some reason is very VERY poor with cpu. Just a few plugins or rack extensions maxes out the cpu very quickly even on fast computers and increasing the buffer size... Opening a different DAW with a much larger project and way more plugins barely even gets the dsp meter halfway, even with a lower buffer size on the same computer. Do your own experiment of this and see for yourself. I don't know why that is but they refuse to fix it. That has been a problem since Reason 6 and here we are at version 10 with the same issue. The audio engine sounds horrible, its the same audio engine since the first Reason was released about 17 years ago thats why no matter how hard you try your sound will never compete with today's standards. I think Reason has the potential to be the best DAW on the market once they fix these things but they simply refuse. i stopped using Reason since version 7, that was my last paid copy and Ive just been demoing every version since then to see if they fix those issues. Im dying to use Reason again for the workflow but the sound quality would put me out of business. If music is just a hobby for you then Reason is the DAW for you but if you want to do music professionally I would recommend trying a different DAW. Just my honest opinion... Take it or leave it. Check out this test someone did (watch part 4 and 5) ruclips.net/video/xN9Rp09uKYE/видео.html
i agree... they have a big problem now... fix this horrible VST performance that makes CPU overload with just few of the heaviest VST... Reason is not a daw created for VST they re starting to realize that now after they ve launched REASON 9.5 with vst support... too bad decisions in propellerhead home
I mean, what "fast" computers are you talking about here? I slapped down a wall of instruments and effects a couple days ago and ran a guitar through it, the in-to-out delay was only a little over 100ms or so. I get that there may be slightly faster programs out there, but how much difference does it really make? Granted, I just built my PC two weeks ago, but it's pretty much entry-level professional hardware anyway. Also, what quality issues are you referring to? I'm not exactly wet behind the ears when it comes to mixing and I haven't noticed anything off in any way about the audio.
This is not a rebuttal, but a genuine question. Being unfamiliar with Serum, I am trying to understand how audio samples would be utilized in this setting. As they describe it above, the power of Europa lies in using non-audio (vector? algorithmic?) wave shapes that can be edited (and save on processing?). Also, doesn't Grain specifically focus on your request to import audio files and use them as a basis for synthesis and modulation? It does share the envelope engine with Europa, so it seems that between the two, it should have these two approaches covered. Thanks
Both Serum and Europa are wavetable synths, so you're correctly noticing the similarity. We also love Serum, too. That's why we carry it in our VST shop for sale. But yes, Europa's Spectral Filter, dynamic wavetables, and harmonics processor are definitely pretty cool we think. /ryan
EUROPA is nothing like SERUM...EUROPA is a poor man SERUM. Not to say that it sounds bad, or that it was easy to develop... but no way one should think of EUROPA as "SERUM on Steroids". To earn that title Propellerhead if there developers where inspired and motivated could have come out swinging harder then this devices. I guess they are saving there real tech for there Rack Extension.
Anyone who thinks europa isnt powerful enough doesnt seem to have used reason regularly. Reason is a fully modular environment. Everything can be modulated. Combinators make racks in racks! Cv can go basically anywhere. And all this can be saved in a combinator. Reason is a powerhouse of a tool in itself. Now the key isnt to make it more powerful its to make it quicker and easier to put that power and potential to use. The only thing left for propellerheads to do is create a faster and easier workflow environment. For everyone else theres vsts now so stop complaining. Lmao
I wouldn't compare it to Serum. Instead, I would compare it to something like Zebra. The engines in Europa are a lot like Zebra's oscillators, but with an added spectral filter and harmonics processor. It's a pretty cool synth.
That mixolydian song around 4:45 is so beautiful.
You guys produce the best video content of any DAW/Plugin dev, hands down. Congratulations, and thanks. Happy to be a customer.
This guy has one of the most classic and original narrative voices I’ve ever heard. Great work by all involved. Gratitude!
100%
Much respect to Propellerhead for producing such a descriptive tutorial video -- and a remarkable DAW.
This is like 'audio crack'...i have now 'lost' several hours playing with it - amazing!!! Well done props'
I got to say, you produce the best Videos Iv seen, and so well explained. You take the complex, and make it much easier to understand.
Thanks! They're fun to make and I put a lot of work into them so it's nice to know they're helping people understand things. /ryan
Ryan, your videos are awesome. Such high quality, even many commercial tutorials are not that well made.
CGDreamsTutorials no joke, the best I’ve ever seen
So great!

It looks like a very impressive synthesizer. It’s amazing what they can do with wavetable synths, especially some of the really good ones like this!
This is one of my favorite synths to use. Top 3 in my arsenal!

this tracks in this videos are so good.
Ever get round to making more Europa videos that this one mentions? Would be good to see more.
I just realized I might be able to throw some of my serum wavetables on this and reinvent my sounds. Hell yes!
Not "might" - you definitely can! Europa supports "Serum compatible wavetables" along with just any old sample you toss in there. /ryan
is it still legal to do that shit? :p
I think it is if he already purchased both of them
So excited to get this and play around with it
8:45 unique wave morphing, well done
Fantastic!
This is dope. Take my money.
I know that’s right. Take my money to

so easy to understand .. please bring back REBIRTH
Thanks a lot, in love with this thing!!
lol @ the download rate of FSB on release day....2 hours into it and only 3 hours left (estimated). SO EXCITED!!!
Hey any plans on adding copy / paste functionality for engines? So I can copy engine 1 settings into engine 2 without having to set each rotary.

Very cool! Are all/any Reason instruments available for Logic Pro?
It looks like propellerhead finally decided to come up with an in house wavetable synth to compete with Massive and serum
Went to the drug store and purchased some 2X reading glasses. Now I'm ready to upgrade.
I bought a second hand telescope but it still wasn't enough magnification_lol

/ryan

I came here to figure out how to assign things to the mod wheel. Think that's the one thing it doesn't cover 😂 Love this synth though!
9:27 Car+Strong!!
Yeah I see you up there you little sneeky pun!!
A few suggestions for Europa update:
1) Macro controls like Thor has.
3) PLEASE MAKE EFX PHASER LFO SYNCABLE AND LOCKABLE
Europa's phaser sounds amazing.
Please add being able to use your own samples in the europa to your list cuz that would be the bees knees
"Hetfield Rule" - hehe, good one!
great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Could we get the song at 5:20 as a Reason file? I would like to learn from this one ...
seconding but purely for listening purposes
Y'all must be bored with your toys if some new crazy VSTs come out as an optional upgrade but "its not as good as the other vsts i already have"
If you're upgrading from a much earlier version or buying Reason for the first time, this shit is a great addition
If you don't use outside VSTs, this shit is a great addition
If synths like Serum aren't already part of your main set of VSTs, this is a great addition
Nobody complained when they added the pitch editing that it wasn't as good as Melodyne. Nobody complained about Radical Piano being added when they already have much better Piano libraries.
Did they ever fix the MIDI issue? I can't seem to get any note to land on the grid in Cubase.
Does anybody know if there is a similar stand alone Desktop synth to Europa? From which synth was it inspired? I know some wavetable synth but i would love to have an Europa in My Hands!!!
"...Propellerhead's signature style of getting great sounds quickly through approachable controls."
LOL, I don't mean to knock your product, but I never, ever met a control I couldn't approach.
What about that highly unsuccessful Trident console in 1984 whose knobs were covered in razor wire and which periodically squirted cholera-infected water at the mix engineer? That had some pretty unapproachable controls. ;) /ryan
LOL, luckily I never met that one!
How can i Zoom-In Reason device? Its so small..
As soon as the PH devs start listening to us paying customers, we will be able to zoom in and actually see what we are tweaking. I'm thinking by V15 or so. SMH.
honestly I've never had a problem with not being able to see
Just open U-he Diva and feel defference
@Delak 82
I'm very happy to hear you don't have any issues
However, these video comments are full of Us users who are having difficulty being able to see the microscopic areas that we should be able to. PH needs to seriously think about stepping into current times with the DAW and many of its outdated and lacking features. Still enjoy Reason, just asking for simple updates.
yeah that sucks I understand
unlimited power
New synths look awesome but its a bit confusing that this is a Major upgrade and VST support was a free upgrade... Are there any plans for real MIDI routing support? Currently we can't use VSTs that support multiple channels, we need to use one instance per VST... very annoying.
Preach! MPC software sucks in Reason. Now I know why thanks to u...
Yep. Same goes for Maschine. I gave up on Reason, instead of building up on the VST support they are making synths most of us already have.
I have to upgrade my computer just to run this synth! Will the ryzen 5 3600 be able to keep up?
Does anyone know how the algorithmic waveforms compete with Serum's spectral morph or something similar w.r.t. efficient use of computational resources? I imagine they work in a similar way, but I'm hoping that Propellerheads has figured out some optimizations that can defeat Serum here. Because being able to load your own wavetables is extremely useful, but it comes at a cost that makes Serum almost unusable at high polyphony.
where do i go to see all propellerhead tutorials from reas two up til 10 these are great
I do not know if I will buy this plugin, but I subscribe for the quality of the tutorial
I regret that you do not speak French
MDM speak english
Can we get some brass stabs patches going with Europa?
Finally, this is huge! Massive, even! (wait... is this NI Massive?)
lol
I’ve just taken the plunge and upgraded from 10 to 11.
Are all songs/projects used in the video included in Reason 10?
Oh and how/where to download Reason 10 if you´re a Reaon 9 user (after 1st September)?
Have the same problem, maybe they will send a email with promotion code later.....
Contrust - Strictly Underground I know, is it solved yet?
I get now a email "Your free Reason 10 upgrade is ready for download!"
VTOLKits Is it a download link?
yes, download link is inside to the website, then you can choose win or mac 3.6GB. My first 200MB is downloaded :-)
Does reason 9.5 or 10 still support reason balance?
theres a spot where i recognized a dead point in this synth i forgot to report this to reason support....
or maybe it was a bug,...i should have screentshot it ,,, the proof ,and the format i used and where i saw this shortcoming from europa ...
to others maybe they wont see it or understand it ...
but i spotted it ,,, being since im doing a refill of this synth
I bought this beast yesterday. One critic: there is no AAX version. Fortunately it works perfectly with Bluecat Audio patchworks.
I've been trying to like Europa but the lack of ability to import your own samples is so disappointing and frustrating. I hope Mattias pulls through and adds to only improvement it needs.
Yeah, like a free 10.5 update :)
You can bring custom samples into Europa now.
Dope. I'm here cuz its now a VST/AU
yo i jus upgraded and necktar updated their driver all new devices and rack exenstion includin some vsts now show up with necktar p4 im overwhelmed.
im trying to make some music using Europa but no sound comes out. what am I doing wrong??
Can you use Europa as an external effect instrument????? Hook up some vocals OR any other Re instrument???
Nope. No audio-in.
Wondering the same thing! I'm pretty sure I watched a video were someone did this but I can't find it now!
I'm not exactly wet behind the ears when it comes to mixing and I haven't noticed anything off in any way about the audio.
please tell me who is the artist of the song in the begining of this vid. Is it a demo can i get it?
So it's Serum but for reason?
Can I infinity synth? Yes!!!
Or filter. Isn't filter movement the main thing about subtractive synthesis?
It's a big one too, sure.
Ok, now where in Serum is the analog of Europa's shape knob? Sorry for the offtopic!
And where in Europa can you import your own sounds/samples ?
This is not a rebuttal, but a genuine question. Being unfamiliar with Serum, I am trying to understand how audio samples would be utilized in this setting. As they describe it above, the power of Europa lies in using non-audio (vector? algorithmic?) wave shapes that can be edited (and save on processing?). Also, doesn't Grain specifically focus on your request to import audio files and use them as a basis for synthesis and modulation? It does share the envelope engine with Europa, so it seems that between the two, it should have these two approaches covered. Thanks
It's a synth, not a sampler. Use grain
It's the WT Pos knob. All it does is sweep through the wavetable.
Is Europa something like Serum on steroids?
PH should have combined Europa and Grain into 1 powerhouse Sampler Synth. That will probably happen just in time for V11s release.
It's a pretty cool synth.
can someone tell me how they samples the radical piano in to grain?
anyone remembers crysonic for mastering or postmastering ? they would.be perfect for.reason
