Of course there are a lot of videos making fun of him mentioning Dick Richards in this commercial, but in all seriousness, I've met Dick Richards himself a couple of times and he tells some of the craziest stories about getting in fights with Norman Mailer, receiving congratulatory letters from Sam Peckinpah, etc. I do vaguely remember asking him about these Liberty Medical commercials, which I believe he may have even directed Brimley in himself.
I think I've watched literally thousands of YTPs based on this very demonstration, but in all honesty, I don't think it would be such popular source material if he wasn't so articulate and a good storyteller.
You're absolutely correct. It's the same reason Michael Rosen and Billy Mays are so popular as YTP material. They're articulate, attention grabbing... Excellent presenters.
Diabetes is a terrible condition. My dad had it and it caused him many problems. Kudos to Wilford Brimley for living many decades with diabetes and maintaining a positive outlook throughout it all.
Imagine spending your entire life being musically talented, as an A-list Hollywood actor, and as a sergeant in the Marines who fought in Korea... only to have your legacy cemented by the way you say 'diabetes'.
My mother has lived with the worst kind of diabetes for 12 years now (that's after diagnosis - she had the same health scares pre-diagnosis). It's been absolute bloody hell for her. I know it's for the US, but I'm going to show her this when next I see her. She'll take comfort in it and, I'm sure, be inspired (she's always likes Wilfred Brimley very much anyway, so that's a real bonus too ;)
It sounds awful.. have you looked into a keytogenic diet and intermittent fasting? It works wonders for type 2 diabetes and can even reverse it in many cases. It helped me go from type 2 to pre diabetic so far and hopefully soon to non diabetic. Maybe you can look into it and tell your mom about it. Just look up these key words “reverse type 2 diabetes “ best channels are by Dr Berg, Dr Ekberg, Dr Lustig, Dr Jamnadas , Dr Berry, Dr Fung, Dr Hallberg and the beat diabetes channel by Brother Dennis Pollak.

This doesn't seem like it was scripted. I'm sure he's got some bullet points off to the side but he's talking straight and I think that gets the message across a lot more effectively than if it was polished/processed/professional.
Those of you wondering about the existence of an HQ version of this: this may have very well been uploaded by Liberty Medical's channel in 240p. Their current oldest uploads from 2008 are also in 240p, and most computer and phone screens were far from HD at the time. The only holder of the HD version of this probably sits with the ad agency who filmed this, that Liberty contracted to make this for them. Who knows if anyone remembers who made this since Liberty was bought out by Edgepark and the exact people involved probably work somewhere else now.
I remember when I was 1st diagnosed with adult onset type 2 diabetus.. I ask my doctor if that was a similar disease to adult onset type 2 diabetes? My dr said yeah.. since I’ve found out about that now “I do… feel… better “

Type 2 diabetic here. I know how BOTH of you - and millions of others out there - feel. I need to stay away from sweets too. Every time I go past the bakery aisle in the supermarket, I keep saying to myself, "Oh, how I want that cake so bad!". But I know I cannot have it. It's hard, but avoiding sweets is something I have to do. My sister is a diabetic, too. My father and one of my older brothers (both deceased) were also diabetics.
Is this the original with the original quality or is this just downscaled? I mean is the quality any different from the original? What did you download it with and where did you download it from?

If I had had the opportunity, I would have given Mr. Brimley apple cider vinegar, and a powerful barley green supplement like Amazing Grass or Garden of Life, and given him fresh garlic every day, lots of probiotics, and other supplements like Co q10, ashwagandha, cayenne pepper, and tumeric. Pretty much, foods and supplements that are good for blood sugar levels are good for lots of other things too. You pretty much have to do the opposite of what all the food advertisements and fast food commercials tell you to do, and get a discount membership at your local heath food store, or online., and learn to cook your own food. High fiber oatmeal, like he always said, is also the right thing to do, but I always mix mine with wheat bran that I get in the bulk bin. Pretty much, everything for healthy living is on the internet, if you can find it.

I’ll start when I was first diagnosed. I, uh, I was scared to death, I was experiencing symptoms that were strange and uh, uh unfamiliar to me. For instance, I had an unquenchable thirst, my tongue felt like a horseshoe rasp. Uh, I was losing my vision. I was losing my energy. Uh, I was getting up every 15 or 20 minutes all through the night, uh, so I wasn’t getting any rest and as a result of all these things, (deep inhale) I lost all my energy. And I was uh, I was scared. A man doesn’t like to admit he was scared, and I truly was. I wasn’t afraid to die, I knew that was coming to all of us, but what I was afraid of was, that I might have to live a long time feeling like I felt. And I wasn’t really interested in that. So finally at the urging of my family, uh, the ones who love me the most, uhh, I went to see a doctor and he explained things to me in a language that I understood. Uhh, and I think the most important thing he said to me was, Wilford if you want to get better, I’m gonna give you a few things to do. And, the more attention you pay to these things and the more diligent you are, the faster you'll get better and the better you'll feel. And ladies and gentlemen that’s exactly the way its been. Through the years the closer I’ve paid attention to the instructions of my doctors the better I feel. Now im not perfect, and I’ve slipped up, and I‘ve eaten ice cream and apple pie and I’ve done things I shouldn’t do, but I want to tell you, when I don’t eat apple pie and I don’t eat ice cream and I eat the foods that I’m supposed to eat, and I do my exercises and I take my medicine and I do the procedures that I was instructed to do, I do feel better. I would encourage all of you to find a doctor that you trust and understand, I’m not doing it without help. I’m surrounded by people who love me, who care for me, and who want me to feel better. Now, one of the things I’ve learned to do, is uh, laugh at myself. Kinda loosen up. Kinda relax about the whole thing. You know, havin’ Type 2 adult onset diabeetus is not the worst thing in the world. Uhhh, ya know. People do learn to live with this and along the trail you’re gonna find some things that ya ought to be, ought to be laughin’ at. So I would encourage you, loosen up. There’s a line in the song, uh “Forget your troubles, come on get happy. Laugh all your cares away.” You know it’s not a bad idea once in a while. Uh, I guess at this point, uh, I want to tell you about an affiliation that I formed along the way. Along my path of recovery if you will. And myself and my best friend and partner, Dick Richards have over the years been able to, uh, help produce, commercials or ads, or endorsements or whatever the name you want to give ‘em. I had to watch the original because this is an illness I'm very scared about so just watching this is very triggering, but sometimes there are things you have to force yourself to do.
