A Houston native, I had the honor of watching him at U of H with Phi Slama Jama and then with the Rockets. Watching him grow from just a dunker and shot blocker in college to a complete and dominating player with unbelievable offensive skills was a highlight of my life. The Dream was a true great and one of the best centers of all time.

9:17 That is actually an example of Hakeem's famous signature move called the "Dream Shake". His Wikipedia page that you were reading actually has a section dedicated to it w/ a quote from Shaq stating: "Hakeem has five moves, then four countermoves - that gives him 20 moves." Many video compilations have been uploaded to showcase his various spins and fakes. The two opponents named in the video are David "The Admiral" Robinson and Patrick Ewing (ever seen Space Jam?). Together w/ Hakeem and Shaq, they were the four most dominant centers of the 90s. People in general rank Hakeem as the best of these four, followed by Shaq, Robinson, then Ewing.

Hakeem arguably had the greatest playoff run as the best player on the 1994/1995 Houston Rockets championship team. Hakeem averaged 33 pts, 10.3 rbs, 4.5 asts, and 3 blks over the course of the entire playoff run. The Rockets are the only team to beat 4 55+ win teams during a championship run and the teams & superstars they went through was impressive. The list:
60-22 Utah Jazz led by John Stockton and Karl Malone
59-23 Phoenix Suns led my Kevin Johnson and Charles Barkley
62-20 San Antonio Spurs led by the David Robinson (MVP that season) and Dennis Rodman (league’s leading rebounder) and
57-25 Orlando Magic led by Penny Hardaway (before he got hurt) and Shaquille O’Neal. -
Michael Jordan’s Bulls never faced a gauntlet of teams with hall of famers that good/tough during a playoff run in any of the 6 championship playoff runs during the Bulls dynasty. Just shows the tremendous impact of Hakeem Olajuwon.

He had the ball handling abilities & quickness of a guard, the height of a center, & the pure fundamental skills as a big man that most guards still to this day cannot seem to grasp. He had a signature move “The Dream Shake” that had counter moves all within the same sequence depending on the defenders position. Good free throw shooter, a pure Dawg and didn’t take any BS from anybody, and the most significant attribute was his Humbleness!! So, there are 5 major categories of statistics for an NBA player. Points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. You got it right with the triple double when you guessed getting double digits in points, rebounds and assists. So, add double digits to blocks or steals and you get the quadruple double. The three most talked about statistical accomplishments for a player in a single game are the triple double, the quadruple double and the 5x5. Triple double can be in any of the 5 categories as well as a quadruple double. The 5x5 is getting at least 5 of each category (quadruple doubles and 5x5s are very rare. Triple doubles happen almost every night in at least one game these days.) Hope that helps 👍🏼

Hakeem Olajuwon is one of the few all-time greats that won a championship with a roster full of role players. He practically carried the 93-94 Rockets to the title single-handedly without a single all-nba, all-defensive, or all-star by his side. A killer in the post and one of the best offensive and defensive centers of all-time. Just FYI - @ 6:39 that is Jordan talking about Olajuwon because when asked for his starting five, Jordan picked Olajuwon at center.

Here’s a story when he first came to the States. He started playing basketball at the age of 15 in Nigeria, when he was discovered by a coach there. His coach set up a workout with four colleges, St. Johns (New York), Providence (Rhode Island), Louisville (Kentucky), and Houston (Texas). He arrives at JFK airport in New York, but nobody from St. Johns was there to meet him. It was winter and when he stepped outside, it was cold and breezy. He went back inside and talked to a baggage handler who happened to be from Nigeria too. He asked him out of the other three places, which one had weather similar to Nigeria. The guy told him Houston, so he flew to Houston. When he arrived in Houston, the coach from Houston, Guy Lewis, sent two players to get him. They didn’t know how he look, so the coach told them to look for a kid from Africa who should be around 6’5” to 6’7”. When the players located him, they quickly called the coach and told him that he was 7 feet tall. The coach said, well s**t, bring him here!!! The rest is history.

The guy who was sitting down describing how he thought he defended Hakeem pretty well was David Robinson. Robinson had just been awarded the 1995 NBA MVP trophy before the start of the series in front of Hakeem, the stadium and a national audience. The thing is.....Hakeem was the reigning MVP from 1994 and he took it personally. Rocket teammates recall Hakeem saying at the time: "He has my trophy. That belongs to me..." which was extremely unusual as Hakeem never talked smack about anyone.
In that Western Conference Finals, Hakeem vs. the MVP David Robinson averaged 35 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 blocks and led the Rockets to a 4-2 series win on the way to their 2nd straight NBA title.

Hakeem is going to be underrated frequently because he only has 2 titles compared to several many of the other all-time great centers have, but in the mid-90s when Hakeem was at his peak, he probably played the best any center ever has during a time when the NBA was full of star centers and during the golden age of tough, physical defense. That is, he probably played the best of any center in history when the competition was the most difficult. He also didn't have a stacked dynasty superteam a lot of the superstars had when they won multiple titles. The defense of the Knicks and Spurs during the 90s were feared, yet he cut through them and the HoF centers guarding him like they were college freshman. At the same time, he won Defensive Player of the Year in 93 and 94 back to back and NBA championships and Finals MVP back to back in 94 and 95. He was unbelievable back then.

Hakeem had 18 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists and 11 blocks. He was 1 assist away from getting ANOTHER one in another game, where he had 29 points, 18 rebounds, 9 assists, and 11 blocks.

To give you an understanding about his best offensive strengths, his 'footwork' was second to none. If you notice, most big guys are a bit clumsy or they just power through other players. Hakeem was not a "power" player but finesse and quickness. He would spin on a double team and split two or three guys and get his shot off. He had a good jump shot too. He was good at everything. He didn't jump extremely high but his timing was ridiculous on shot blocking. He was even considered slightly undersized at his position. Often listed at 7', he was probably more in the 6'10" range.

Jordan and Hakeem had a mutual respect for each other. Jordan once said "If I could pick any player of all-time ahead of myself and others it would Hakeem Olajuwon". Jordan also said if his Bulls played Hakeem and his Rockets there would not have been anyone on his Bulls team that could stop Hakeem. Hakeem once said that "Jordan is a superior player". Hakeem was also quoted as saying "If MJ was a animal in the jungle he could lie out on the biggest rock and no one would disturb him, no one would attack him".
