Modified Uni Knot for Braid Fishing Line

- The Uni Knot is one of the most popular fishing knots among saltwater anglers. This is because it is easy to tie and has very strong connection.
In this video, you'll learn the best modified uni knot version that we've been able to find for tying the Uni with braid fishing line. Given the slick nature of braid, it's important to make the extra wraps as shown in the video for added strength.

Awesome knot I use it to connect all my leaders for musky fishing . 80-100 test braid. Held up to a 46'" 28 pound musky

when you go to do that loop go thru the eye another time and use that to make the loop holds much stronger edit: to be more clear i mean go thru the eye then go thru the eye again hold the loop and wrap line thru the loop around the main line thru the loop 8 times pull tight both line and snip extra line

You put emphasis on not catching the edge of hook eye but you dont mention once not to cross over the doubled line through the eye, which is the most basic mistake people make... and I can almost guarantee you that when you cinched down the knot the loops around the eye crossed over b/c with thin braid is quite difficult to keep the loops around eye parallel when cinching down..

Hi, Luke - I see you've done line tests too... Have you ever run tests on, say, 10 lb. braid vs. 10 lb. mono with a split type sinker clamped onto the line? I'm curious as to whether the sinker weakens the line significantly, and whether braid or mono resists such weakening better. It seems like this might be a tricky test due to variations in the sinkers, and in the clamping of them to the line.

Thanks for the knot. I was skeptical. I was using a Trilene knot with 8 wraps before on 30lb hi vis spider wire, as it beat the other knots I tested it against. Your knot beat two Trilene knots (8 wrap). I tried to use your double loop system and applied it to the improved uni (two wraps on the way up to the loop then the 8 through the loop), but yours beat that too, finally tried Berkeley braid knot (8 wrap), but yours beat that too. The one knot I tied your way beat all the others…in a row, the first one I tied. I only used the scale for the first pull against the Trilene knot and it broke at about 60lbs, which was impressive in and of itself since it was 30lb spider wire. The tests were done using a swivel to form a loop, all the knots broke clean, none of these slipped as far as I can tell.

So you recommend this "modified uni-knot" for braided line? I'm using 30lb Berkley X9 line 0.20mm with lures. I've been using the Palomar knot but my lure got stuck recently and I took the opportunity to pull on my line and my line snapped fairly easily. Am I that strong or is there something wrong

All I’ve ever need was the uni knot, loop knot, and fg knot but that’s for inshore fishing in florida
Is there a big difference between this and the trilene knot?
Great video! I was actually curious and did that initial step running line through the eye of the hook twice with the uni knot but with mono and did the typical 5 turns. Have you done any tests to see how much stronger that makes it for mono?
This actually already a knot with a name called tye fish'n fool knot and it was invented and covered by knot wars 9 years ago
I've broke 40lb braid twice on a snag with this knot done perfectly....

How many wraps work best for 80-100lb braid?

Again does not work on spiderwire braid. I'm not sure if it's because my braid is so grippy but cinching down the knots like you do is nearly impossible. Thanks for the tutorials but so far they have all been completely useless and frustrating for me resulting in wasted time and fishing line. I'll stick to my classic Palomar thanks

Do you watch out for doubled line around hook or swivel not to cross one over another? I use this knot and try to prevent them from crossing but it's quite hard. I remember that i also tested this knot and when lines crossed it was weaker than standard uni.
will this work for catching goliath grouper?
Cute, but don't see the point other than experimenting with something. I use a uni, Palomar, rapala, a couple of drop loops and a few other knots. Use braid, fluorocarbon, mono in anywhere from 2 lbs up to 80lbs, braid mainly, sometimes a steel leader tied to whatever is on the reel which is usually 50-65 lb braid. If using a hook with the offset eye, I'll snell but usually just have a snap on the leader if any.

This is becoming more relevant. It used to be you always had to have a leader off of the braid. But now spiderwire has come out with braid that is nearly invisible. Search out spiderwire invisi-braid. They claim it's smoother and translucent. So you don't really need a leader anymore. First time using it, I caught more fish than my mono, so I don't think the fish are seeing it too well. I'd be curious what all your testing will show and if this is still going to be the best braid-to-hook knot on this new style of braid. I think more people will be using braid now... or at least should.
Hi, Eric W. - I found a slight advantage to 4 lb. Fireline (another translucent braid) over 4 lb. mono as a leader when fishing for trout in somewhat murky water. (I'm sort of going "backwards" and using 8 lb. main line, so all I lose is my leader & hook if I get hung up. Casting distance is still generally adequate with the 8 lb. main line.) My theory is that the fish don't "feel" the softer braid as much, initially. However, in several outings to much clearer waters, the Fireline seems to have no advantage -- possibly because it is still a little more visible than the mono in the water? Note also that Luke did some abrasion tests on mono vs. braid, and mono won handily. That could be a concern in some situations.
I heard flourocarbon leader gives decent defense against toothy fish, plus is more invisible under water.

Norcal06Warrior 916 and you may never have an issue with them. I was just commenting on what salt strong has put out on their website/videos. I believe they said palomar is more prone to slip and through their tests the modified uni is technically stronger. That doesn’t mean that palomar is therefore useless; just not as strong with braid.
Norcal06Warrior 916 I just lost a ned rig to a bass with a palomar knot on 15lbs braid today. Yesterday I hauled a grass carp around 8 lbs though. I think the initial hit from aggressive fish, will cause knots that can more easily slip, to give.
so when I tie my 120lb braid to my swivel, these Groupers wont break this knot?
sounds like a whole different animal when fishing for groupers lol

Thanks! Yes, this is a great knot. After filming, I experimented with using 14 twists, and the added twists gave it more strength... so feel free to add more twists to the braid Uni knot if you'll be going after big game.
Hey, I was wondering if you have found a brand & model of digital fish weighing scales that you recommend for testing knot strengths and for weighing fish weights accurately? Thanks Tony
+Tony Gruber For weighing fish, I only recommend a harness style scale because the lip grabbers and gill holder scales are really bad for the fish assuming you're catch and release fishing... these scales are unfortunately hard to come by and not worth the trouble... best to just measure a catch and release fish and give an estimated weight based on that.
For measuring knot strength, I've been very impressed with a cheap one made by Quarrow... it goes up to 44 lbs and has lasted surprisingly long after many tests breaking lines up to the 30 lb range. For smaller fish, like bass, you can always place the fish in a plastic grocery bag, and then put the lip grabber or hook through the handles of the bag.

Is it stronger with mono putting the line twice through the eye of the hook?
It's harder to cinch up and the mono gets distorted, so I'd say no.

This is the way. I get so frustrated with “expert” debunking of something that has worked for a lifetime. Too many weekend anglers focusing on the wrong things. I can literally count on one hand how many fish I missed because of a knot failure.

This knot is called the Eye Crosser. Great knot, although I still think the Palomar is superior with braid.
tlap2121 Thanks for leaving the comment. We have held a variety of fishing knot tests, and the Palomar did extremely well with mono/fluoro, but its hold was not nearly as impressive with braid. Luke Simonds That is interesting and somewhat surprising too. I'd be curious how the double Palomar (two overhand knots) would stack up. I don't typically use a swivel and just do a double uni or FG knot for braid to fluoro, but it's always good to know which knot is best for a certain application! Thanks for the info.

I'm glad to see that you're using the FG Knot for connecting your braided line to the leader... it's the knot that has been the most impressive one to me from holding the various knot contests (so rare that the thinnest option happens to be considerably stronger than the others).
This is the Fish-N-Fool knot , not the Eye crosser only had 2 wraps where as my Fish-N-Fool knot has 5 to 10. It is still the strongest knot ever tested with braid or mono.

You can do any number of wraps with any size line you want. It just depends on the size of the loop and the length of your tag end thats wrapping around. I change the amount of wraps based on the size/material of line. Braid: 15#-10times, 20#-9times, 50#-6times... Mono: 10#-7times, 15to20#-6times, 30to50#-5 times
