Miraculously tight band.
My favorite James band...Harry and Count Buono doubled the lead at times...Harry's fiery tone and then there's Buddy, the perfect big band sideman. His break at the end of Don't be that way always kills me...plays an unorthodox pick up that would have confused any other band but this one...just F'ing great and his solo on Two O'Clock is one of the greatest solo's every played.
What an amazing band! And " Harry James " has a sound all of his own! Of course, " Buddy Rich! " Gives the band a real kick! My favourite drummer of all time! Taste, dexterity, instantaneous reactions! From a whisper to triple fff! Never to be seen again! Paul Budd Brightlingsea Essex England UK.

Nobody played as great bigband drums as Buddy Rich in all ways. He was a real marvel and a wonder on the drums.

This is really a very good band, one that I have not paid sufficient attention to. I have no recordings by this band, but I am going to get some, and soon. My band interest has centered around Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and Don Ellis. Another band I like is the Chris McDonald Orchestra; they play mainly gospel selections. I notice in the Harry James Band that there is no guitarist. I wonder why not?
Harry James had a guitarist in the band until 1963.
The James rhythm section was brilliant without a guitarist.
He dropped the guitarist for financial reasons.
Heard Buddy say a musician needs to be a good sideman, a good soloist, and a good leader. He really could do all three. Buddy was a star. And with Harry James - wow! What a grouping.

Im with you on Harry's band. I met him in Cincinnati at the topper ballroom. Buddy was long gone by then. The kid on drums was great. Im a drummer myself. If you play string bass you are one of the most talented musicians in the band. I love string bass. A good bass player is worth his weight in gold.

Interesting that it looks like one mic for the whole band, yet the sound is great and balanced; compared to contemporary big band setups where often everyone has their own mic. How did they do it??

The sound is so balanced because it's what's call a live stage. Ed Sullivans was the same. Shot gun mics both sides of the stage and in the ceiling.
I hate this idea that, because buddy was seen to be harsh at times that somehow made him an inhumane person. Look at dudes reactions as people nails parts. hes CONSTANTLY giving visual cues to his bandmates that theyre absolutely rocking it and hes enjoying his time doing what he clearly loves. Im sure he may have been a pain to work with, but all artists are. He gave respect and demanded it in return.
Hey buddy was old school. The road life,,, uhh if your a dick no one wants to work with you. Guys were valued when you could play and be fun to hang with. on the Buddy tapes he was cracking the whip he had lots of kids right out if college doing old school road work!! Ride a bus all night ,get to the next gig, set up, have a shower ,food and play then pack up back on the bus ect.
Harry was a amazing player. I have to admit thought that "kiss off" release on nearly every phrase gets a bit irritating. It detracts from such a wonderful sound.
It was part of his identity. No doubt about who is playing.
There may be drummers that are technically better than Buddy Ruch, however, there are none that have a particular unique sound as he. Few musicians play their instruments in such a manner. He is in the same class as Miles, Dizzzy, and Harry where you immediately recognize their sound. Buddy drives the band which gives Harry the room to do anything as if the two were dualing.
Tja ... kommen auch Ihnen die Hemd-Manschetten unter den Jacket-Ärmeln immer zu lang vor? Evtl. sollten wir doch zu Manschetten-Knöpfen zurückkehren, nachdem nun schon die Krawatten angebl. abgeschafft wurden. Der Herrenausstatter in Mailand wird's wissen.
Great music but strange show. Fake nightclub in a tv studio, no Japanese people recognizable in Tokyo no less.
