Hard to believe how fast Pollack aged in 10 years since his prominent role playing himself alongside James Stewart in The Glenn Miller Story which was released in 1952. His face is sunken and he has lost most of his hair.

wow...excellent band...1st song, a dixie tune recreated the Quarter and UPTOWN NO for me....I heard and saw PETE FOUNTAIN in his HILTON HOTEL jazz club during MARDI GRAS, 1985...your band was equal !

so cool to see and hear jazz come full circle back to half its roots in european marching music, much of it from GERMANY. LUVED the upright bass dixie solo ...too bad your audience was a bit "anemic".

This is really a very good band, one that I have not paid sufficient attention to. I have no recordings by this band, but I am going to get some, and soon. My band interest has centered around Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and Don Ellis. Another band I like is the Chris McDonald Orchestra; they play mainly gospel selections. I notice in the Harry James Band that there is no guitarist. I wonder why not?

    • @ChuckParDueMusic

Harry James had a guitarist in the band until 1963. The James rhythm section was brilliant without a guitarist. He dropped the guitarist for financial reasons.

The one downside to a canister throne is that the height is not adjustable. For drummers with longer or shorter legs or torso, 24" would not work for everyone. This is why even if they were still available I would not choose a canister throne. Another reason is that it won't fold up for convenient transportation of the kit. It's like carrying another drum shell.

Probably because Dick Cully is a superior drummer. If you watch Dick, he has NO wasted motion, NO over exaggerated flailing of his arms. Dick’s arms are close to his body, encouraging proper technique and especially DYNAMICS, which if you watch ( name redacted) you will note the complete opposite! There’s a reason Dick is called The Drummers Drummer, because, simply, HE IS A Real Drummers Drummer. Dick plays similar to Buddy, if someone else isn’t as good, just watch Dick and learn. If one is pompous enough to say Dick is no Buddy Rich, well, I propose, that you simply don’t know Dick Cully!

My favorite James band...Harry and Count Buono doubled the lead at times...Harry's fiery tone and then there's Buddy, the perfect big band sideman. His break at the end of Don't be that way always kills me...plays an unorthodox pick up that would have confused any other band but this one...just F'ing great and his solo on Two O'Clock is one of the greatest solo's every played.

….the answer is to see both players side to side….I think most drummers do not like direct competition but wish to excel at “what” they do best. Let each play for their personality will come out….

"...explains Buddy rich..." You've left out explaining how Buddy was a terrific tap dancer. You've left out explaining how Buddy was an actor. You've left out explaining how Buddy was a singer. You've left out explaining the hard time Buddy had in the U.S. Marine Corps. You've left out explaining Buddy's quick comic wit. You've left out explaining the reason Buddy could be on Johnny Carson whenever he wanted. We can see Buddy do all these thigs you're doing on videos and seeing them done by the one who came up with the licks. Why do we need you to try and imitate what we see Buddy do? You're an excellent drummer, Dick, but Heaven knows,, you're no Buddy Rich.

I never claimed to be pal. I can tell you many things abut Buddy Rich that have nothing to do with drumming. Stanley Kay his first assistant drummer and manager was a dear friend of mine. Ellis Tollin the father of the Dyna-Sonic snare drum was like a second dad. Cats that played with him worked with me with all kinds of stories. Your questions ,make no sense to me at all. The title was Secrets of the World's Greatest Drummer explaining technique. Not the Life and Times of him.

This is a fantastic video; you seem to have studied Buddy Rich technique in great detail; from what I can tell you play as well as he did… I know you would never claim that, but-your playing is very impressive. I am 67 years old, and I have been playing since I was 11 with years off to become and practice as a surgeon. (I think one can grow old in jazz country or blues but, unless one is already a star, it’s unlikely in rock.) I have watched one of your videos that I can find, including your performances, wherever they appear . Your own big band performances are great, but unless I am missing something, the sound quality does not do you justice. I wish you could do two things for me: the first is to please make a video of yourself with your favorite big band with the kind of overhead close camera angles that Buddy always has; The second request is that I would love to see you do an in depth instructional on how Buddy keeps time with his left hand….always… even when there are no hits to set up for he keeps time with both hands but his left is what drives the band, which I know you know is crucial.

I listened to Chris Barber on BFN (British Forces Network) radio in the 1950s when I was a kid in Germany...... I much later heard him in person when he visited Vancouver, BC in 2001 and played at a quite modest venue on Main Street. I still sometimes listen to his Petite Fleur with Monty Sunshine. Ottilie Patterson with her earthy voice also sometimes performed with Chris Barber is also cool...🎻
