Hard to believe how fast Pollack aged in 10 years since his prominent role playing himself alongside James Stewart in The Glenn Miller Story which was released in 1952. His face is sunken and he has lost most of his hair.

This is really a very good band, one that I have not paid sufficient attention to. I have no recordings by this band, but I am going to get some, and soon. My band interest has centered around Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and Don Ellis. Another band I like is the Chris McDonald Orchestra; they play mainly gospel selections. I notice in the Harry James Band that there is no guitarist. I wonder why not?

    • @ChuckParDue1953

Harry James had a guitarist in the band until 1963. The James rhythm section was brilliant without a guitarist. He dropped the guitarist for financial reasons.

The one downside to a canister throne is that the height is not adjustable. For drummers with longer or shorter legs or torso, 24" would not work for everyone. This is why even if they were still available I would not choose a canister throne. Another reason is that it won't fold up for convenient transportation of the kit. It's like carrying another drum shell.

Probably because Dick Cully is a superior drummer. If you watch Dick, he has NO wasted motion, NO over exaggerated flailing of his arms. Dick’s arms are close to his body, encouraging proper technique and especially DYNAMICS, which if you watch ( name redacted) you will note the complete opposite! There’s a reason Dick is called The Drummers Drummer, because, simply, HE IS A Real Drummers Drummer. Dick plays similar to Buddy, if someone else isn’t as good, just watch Dick and learn. If one is pompous enough to say Dick is no Buddy Rich, well, I propose, that you simply don’t know Dick Cully!
