  • Helen Forrest sings five of her great hits with Harry James in this rare TV appearance from 1981. The songs include "I Don't Want to Walk Without You," "I Had the Craziest Dream," "I Cried For You," "I've Heard That Song Before," and "You Made Me Love You". James himself conducts the band on his hit "Roll 'Em".

Really didn't care for Merv except for one thing. He had some great shows that showcased the greats of the big band era. When I was in college he had several programs that had Vaughn Monroe, Freddie Martin, Charlie Barnet, Tex Beneke and many more. It was several nights. Wish I could find those episodes .

Helen has been my favourite singer since 1953. I think she is best remembered for her work with Artie Shaw. She started to lose it when she was with James. When this was recorded she was well past her best. 'Belt them out' is right. She never did that at her best. This is painful.

Too much emoting. She had a specific style with James and Shaw, and later she changed her style and dramatized everything way too much. Still one of my favorite singers, but not this style.

  • @josephreddy5084

NEVER had a clue about her there's no fluid lyrical sense or flow crescendo especially WITH the music and musicians. Don't think she spent time with musicians and jammed. She's white bread and that's why Harry James kept her . Ego you can't sing better than the band leader. HE has to be the top banana

Well, if he wasn’t involved with someone and neither was she then it’s nobody’s business. But if either were seriously involved or married, then yes, discretion should be used to avoid hurting people or if she’s ‘trying to be honest’ just keep quite.

I'll have to listen to her actual recordings, but this Helen Forrest is not impressive. She's just too loud. Unfortunately, she seems to have been influenced by singers like that druggie that died of an overdose. Oh, yes, Whitney Houston, but she's not the only loudmouth singer.. I WAS RIGHT: she was much, much better before. Too bad she now thinks that louder is better. It isn't. Too bad she came out of retirement.

As a singer ages, the soft voice and intonation goes first, so one makes up for it by increasing the volume where it is much easier to perform. She did lose a great deal of touch over time, but never a thing in terms of dynamics or pitch.

I read that she had problems with her hearing. Perhaps that's why she sings louder here.

Quabledistocficklepo, Whitney Houston would have been influenced by Helen Forrest, not Helen influenced by Whitney. Besides, in 1981 where was Whitney? Please, do your homework before commenting.
