Sue Lawley once revealed Pauline Collins' age on the show, then said, disingenuously, "You don't mind me saying that, do you?" Pauline was polite enough to say 'No'.
It is sad to see how judgemental society was to a teenage girl, whilst the middle-aged men are not judged. I feel sorry for Christine - she was a young girl caught up in a media storm and was treated terribly. She had a difficult childhood, which is why she was vulnerable to this kind of situation. I hope society is becoming more compassionate and less judgemental of women.

This interview was done at a time when Jimmy Saville was the biggest BBC star and a colleague of Sue Lawley. Instead of being a sanctimonious Interviewer, Sue Lawley should have been doing a proper journalistic job and investigated all the rumours around Saville. Her interview here was a disgrace.

Christine was hounded by the press and vilified the rest of her life, Profumo carried on having tea with the Queen Mother etc, his life hardly changed, and he had £9 million, which probably warded of the press hounding him. Sue Lawley should be ashamed of herself, why shouldn't Christine tell her side of it, its not as if those of us old enough to remember, did not want to hear her side, we did, and I am thankful that Christine managed to eventually tell her story.

Yes, that was my impression, too. I have respect for Keeler. This couldn't have been that easy to do and it was great that John Hurt was there, who I greatly admire. This reminds so much of what happened with Monica Lewinsky, and the way she was manipulated and hung to dry. Thank God she has managed to come through it well now.

I actually came across this by chance and was enamored by the way this woman, in the truest sense of the word, handled herself - with integrity. Every bloodline has been a victim of "grooming" and projected guilt. The presenter tried to belittle this woman. The only person she belittled, was herself.
Lawley was such a classic example of middle-class desperation to serve and please the upper classes, not only on behalf of the BBC, but to protect the system in general. Yes, Lawley is terrible. That is a grotesque question: 'Are there any of these men...?' She was a nasty piece of work when she first appeared on Nationwide, and doesn't appear to have grown much as a human being.
Christine should have refused to answer that. It was totally irrelevant in the context of this interview and was said in a cruel and judgemental way. I'm glad John Hurt was supporting her.

I'm so glad that not only was this said, but that it's the first comment. I'm not even half way through it and I wanted to smack Sue. She's nasty, condescending, snappy, and judgmental. One of the first things you learn as a reporter, is to not be biased. You're supposed to have an open mind and leave your opinion out of it. If you're closely related to the situation and/or feel too strongly about one side of it, you should decline to do it. I don't know if she was related to one of the people involved or if she was just jealous, but it doesn't really matter what the reason was. There was obviously a reason and she should have never done this interview.
Lawley does come over as being rather pompous. 'John Profumo has suffered enough! ' Hurt had it right. Profumo lived. Ward didn't. '... Are there any of these men whom you have actually loved?' I'm surprised Keeler bothered answering that.

She was 19 to my knowledge and hardly either naive or an innocent and provided sexual favours because she liked the very expensive gifts and enjoyed the sex. Because it all came to light at the time, later on she had a lot of regrets. It’s like drinking a lot then having a bad hangover. She had nothing to regret at all but the whole affair left a stain on her all her life. Unlike Mandy, former mistress of Rachman (who unfortunately for her) had a heart attack in a cab and died. She went on to build a career afterwards appearing in various soft porn films.

Christine showed real restraint when answering Sue Lawley's questions; more than warranted considering what a snooty cow Lawley was being. Then again, Lawley always thought herself better than everyone else.
In the mid-1980s I lived across the road from the estate in King's Rd Chelsea where Christine Keeler lived. I wouldn't claim to have known her but I saw her often at bus stops, in the shops, etc and every time I did she was chatting with various people and seemed a very open and friendly person who was well-liked.

She was only 17 when it all started. Profumo himself got away scot-free in jail terms, his family did suffer but politicians i are allowed to lie (in Parliament) and get away with it.
I don't feel particularly sorry for John Profumo.He acted in a very reckless manner in terms of the security of the state.However, it did cost him his ministerial office and parliamentary seat. In that sense, he didn't get away with it.

Lawley puts it to them that the film shouldn't be made out of respect for John Profumo and his family. So should Keeler keep quiet and go on being scapegoated for the actions of grown men? Keeler was little more than a girl at the time of the scandal. Perhaps Profumo should have done a stint in prison just like Keeler had to. People have been blaming women for anything that ends badly since Adam and Eve.
But it was at the time - remember Prince Philip was meant to be one of the men at the party. Christine was the only one who went to prison on trumped up charges of perjury - they were trying to ruin her crebibility. All those powerful, educated men and she went to prison! It's a disgrace.

I think Lawley came across as Snooty, Stuck Up and without regard to Christine and how such a young girl was manipulated, used and abused. Even if at times it may have seemed that Christine was using the situation to her own advantage, I think it's very clear how much influence Steven Ward had on her and as she said "He controlled my mind!" Profumo was the villain regardless of how much he and his family suffered, he had a choice and he made the wrong one! Women in the sixties despite the supposed liberation were very much put down by the male attitude towards them, especially by those of a particular class and establishment! So, I say in very many respects, well done to her, sadly though she also paid the consequences.

Sue Lawley comes across very badly when viewed in modern times. Very judgmental of the female, no criticism of the older politician entrusted with a public service job while hanging around with teenage girls.
Yes, that was my impression, too. I have respect for Keeler. This couldn't have been that easy to do and it was great that John Hurt was there, who I greatly admire. This reminds so much of what happened with Monica Lewinsky, and the way she was manipulated and hung to dry. Thank God she has managed to come through it well now.

I'm so glad that not only was this said, but that it's the first comment. I'm not even half way through it and I wanted to smack Sue. She's nasty, condescending, snappy, and judgmental. One of the first things you learn as a reporter, is to not be biased. You're supposed to have an open mind and leave your opinion out of it. If you're closely related to the situation and/or feel too strongly about one side of it, you should decline to do it. I don't know if she was related to one of the people involved or if she was just jealous, but it doesn't really matter what the reason was. There was obviously a reason and she should have never done this interview.

She was 19 to my knowledge and hardly either naive or an innocent and provided sexual favours because she liked the very expensive gifts and enjoyed the sex. Because it all came to light at the time, later on she had a lot of regrets. It’s like drinking a lot then having a bad hangover. She had nothing to regret at all but the whole affair left a stain on her all her life. Unlike Mandy, former mistress of Rachman (who unfortunately for her) had a heart attack in a cab and died. She went on to build a career afterwards appearing in various soft porn films.

Christine showed real restraint when answering Sue Lawley's questions; more than warranted considering what a snooty cow Lawley was being. Then again, Lawley always thought herself better than everyone else.
In the mid-1980s I lived across the road from the estate in King's Rd Chelsea where Christine Keeler lived. I wouldn't claim to have known her but I saw her often at bus stops, in the shops, etc and every time I did she was chatting with various people and seemed a very open and friendly person who was well-liked.
I too remember seeing her near Worlds End. Everyone around there knew she lived there and left her alone out of decency.

I don't feel particularly sorry for John Profumo.He acted in a very reckless manner in terms of the security of the state.However, it did cost him his ministerial office and parliamentary seat. In that sense, he didn't get away with it.

People have been blaming women for anything that ends badly since Adam and Eve.
They keep bringing this up but really it is no where near like the scandals in politics that we have today.
But it was at the time - remember Prince Philip was meant to be one of the men at the party. Christine was the only one who went to prison on trumped up charges of perjury - they were trying to ruin her crebibility. All those powerful, educated men and she went to prison! It's a disgrace.

What a charmer Christine Keeler is! And brave to speak up. Yes, I know she's publishing a book! But you can't say this poor woman hasn't been through the mill all these years and she's still gracious! I was a fan of Sue Lawley's but she's slightly tarnished her image in my eyes! Far too judgmental and school-marmish here for my liking.

Sue Lawley, it's rather mediocre the way you hammer on. What about a little smile and some empathy?
I think Lawley came across as Snooty, Stuck Up and without regard to Christine and how such a young girl was manipulated, used and abused. Even if at times it may have seemed that Christine was using the situation to her own advantage, I think it's very clear how much influence Steven Ward had on her and as she said "He controlled my mind!" Profumo was the villain regardless of how much he and his family suffered, he had a choice and he made the wrong one!
Women in the sixties despite the supposed liberation were very much put down by the male attitude towards them, especially by those of a particular class and establishment!
So, I say in very many respects, well done to her, sadly though she also paid the consequences.
Keeler had a lovely soothing voice. If the internet had existed then, she could have had a successful career as an ASMR artist.
I think Christine Keeler kept her cool and was very dignified during this interview. Sue Lawley came across as being very judgemental and kept asking the same questions over again. She missed a golden opportunity to find out how life had been for Christine since the scandal. Glad she’s no longer on TV. We haven’t missed her.
