  • Today I'm going over a complete cost breakdown of my 5.7 Hemi swap 1970 Challenger budget build. I made a list of parts and costs you'll need for your Hemi project, a list of costs you should do when swapping from a donor car, and the cost of some performance mods you'll probably want to add to your Hemi.

    Great video series! Lots of detail, and it looks fantastic. I am working on Hemi swaps as well and going to put a detailed wiring video together for using the factory harness and computer. Like you said there is not a lot of information on the Hemi’s out there. Unlocking the factory PCM isn’t too bad, there are a few places that will do it for around $100-150…Some don’t have the SKIM enabled (Don’t need to unlock) and depending on the year you may be able to unlock them with HP tuners. So they are not too bad to work with. I found DIY Hemi is a good resource. Great build, looking forward to see what else you do.

    Dude, great video! I've always wondered what would be involved in modernizing the powertrain of this classic dream car and you laid it all out right here. The 5.7 (345ci) swap from the modern R/T makes a lot of sense for this build. Would love to one day find out what a Gen2 to Gen3 426 HEMI swap would entail and what kind of RWHP it would dyno. That would put a project at 10 times the cost for the crate engine alone, though. Also, have you considered an NOS kit on this bad boy?

    I don't know if it's mentioned anywhere, but the factory alternators can be regulated with the old school Mopar regulators. They just built the regulation into the PCM, but it's common to wire an external regulator if you fry the internal PCM one. Wiring is a quick Google search away. Much cheaper than buying an internally regulated (1 wire) alternator.

    • @noboltsleftbehind
      @noboltsleftbehind  Год назад +1

      It’s been a while since I researched this but I seem to remember mixed opinions on this? If I remember correctly these alternators use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and the external regulators didn’t quite provide the right signal these needed. I was worried about the long-term reliability of this setup and went with the one-wire. This was two years ago, maybe there’s more information now on the reliability of this.

    • @russmiller7687
      @russmiller7687 Год назад +1

      @@noboltsleftbehind Nah, I have done it to cars still running decades later now. It doesn't require a varied voltage to excite the field winding to turn the alternator on and off. Chrysler integrated voltage regulation into the PCM ages ago, and things like fan control use PWM to vary the speed, but battery charging has always been low/on high/off. The external regulators have been solid state for a very long time, and thereby capable of rapid high/low switching to keep the voltage correct, if that's what you mean... the control is capable of PWM like rapid switching, rather than really old school point style regulators that Chrysler hasn't used since the 60s. The integrated voltage regulation isn't superior in any sense, other than it was being monitored closer to the PCM electronics, thereby insuring its voltage was slightly better regulated, but you're not using the PCM, so it's a non issue.
      I felt bad that I failed to say you have a beautiful car, and did a fine job of swapping it last time I posted, so I'll make sure to do so now. Good work!

      Good cheap junkyard motors are a thing of the past unfortunately, they’re all 50+ years old at this point.l and the reality is would have spent as least as much if not much more on an original setup with the same type of power. And it wouldn’t have been anywhere near as efficient or reliable. I know these things don’t matter to some, but I drive my cars very regularly and roadtrip from time to time so it’s actually very valuable to me. Good question, so far I’ve been super happy with the 5.7 and going the donor car route saved me many, many thousands of dollars over a 392. I’d definitely still get the 5.7. And yes, the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same so an 833 should bolt right up to a Gen 3 Hemi (I think you may need to trim the input shaft slightly) and your z-bar clutch setup should work fine.

    great job ! i am working on a 1973 dodge charger factory 318 car that was actually my charger from my senior year in high school , back then i thought my little 318 with headers , dual exhaust and air shocks was the fastest thing around lmao anyway i was going to do a 360 , 727 and 8 3/4 rear combo , but since this was my car from high school i want to be able to drive it almost year round . so i decided i would like to go with the 5.7 route . my question is what years and what cars or trucks would you recommend for me to look for ? i will be upgrading the motor before i put it in cam, headers possibly heads but i would like to use the automatic trans out of whatever donor car i find as i will be keeping my 8 3/4 rear with 3:91's hence why i want the over drive trans lmao and do i need the gas pedel from the donor ?

    • @noboltsleftbehind
      @noboltsleftbehind  2 года назад +2

      That's awesome, that's a pretty sweet car to have in high school! I think you'll like the 5.7 if you're building it for a reliable cruiser. I've racked up almost 5000k miles since my swap and it's been the best of both worlds for me, a rowdy sounding V8 that starts, idles, and drives like a modern car.
      The easiest year range to swap is probably the non-VVT engines, which are 2008 and earlier. The Variable Valve Timing stuff makes tuning and cam swapping a bit more complex/expensive. The earlier (2006 & earlier truck/suv, 2005 & earlier car) Hemis are already MDS deleted, so you'll save some time and money there too. I went with a '05 truck motor since it was the cheapest donor I could find, and has high-mount accessories that made it a bit easier to swap.
      If you're running your stock ECU and harness, then yes you'll need the gas pedal from your donor. Supposedly the earlier Hemis (non VVT, non MDS) ECUs are the easiest to unlock and tune but I just went with an aftermarket one for mine. Aftermarket harnesses I've heard need a specific pedal to work. I converted to drive-by-cable so was able to keep my original pedal.
      I can't say much about the auto transmissions since I went with a manual, but the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same on the Hemis and the old LA small blocks. So you have a lot of older and newer transmission options to pick from. One thing to consider if you use a modern car transmission with a fixed output shaft like I did, you'll be spending more on your driveshaft to have a slip yoke built into the middle.

      I think the truck motor made the swap a little easier for me. The high-mounted AC and alternator means you won’t have to notch the frame and have better mount/header clearance. Also I figured a truck or SUV would have had less of a chance of being abused than a Charger or Challenger if you’re getting a used motor. The intake manifold is a little better looking on the car, but the uniqueness of the truck one has kinda grown on me.
