Turning a replacement odometer backwards

  • I needed to replace my speedometer, but I wanted to make the dial reading from the replacement odometer match the actual odometer reading for my truck.
I was camping at the time that I was working on my truck and had to figure out some way to accomplish what I wanted to do... This is a little part of how I went about it.

Thanks. Mine was stuck for many years and I actually want to roll it forward to estimated current mileage. :)

Blake’s 66 Chevy I just watched a video about a guy that bought a 5000.00 (yes five thousand dollars) Jaguar that said it had 40k on it but everything about the car pointed to it being a clapped out POS. Took it to a mechanic and has spent 17k in repairs on this car he believed had 40k miles because the odometer said it did. I say the speedo/odometer stopped working and was replaced but this guy is calling it fraud for his stupidity.

Clever idea to use the little battery fan motor. Always keep the maximum speed under control as when the number wheels go too fast, the plastic intermediate Geneva gears could break off.

The Ford Explorers odometer is a good replacement for your Ford Ranger if you can't find any Ranger odometers available. I went to a pick n pull and pulled an odometer from a 1997 ford explorer and it was a cable driven odometer. The part numbers were the same as well, however the explorers odometer has 6 digits instead of the 5 digit ones that came with 1994 and previous year trucks. I didn't disassemble the odometer, since I ruined my old one trying to set back the miles after an engine rebuild. (By prying off the needle, it was next to impossible to recalibrate the speedometer, since the super sensitive clock spring behind it is easy to damage.) I would NOT recommend ordering a ford explorer odometer online and actually pull it from a car at a junkyard to eliminate any chance you could get an incompatible odometer.
I used a variable speed dremel with a rubber sanding wheel (minus the sandpaper roll) and spun only the fractional miles forward until I was at 280000. Then, if you pull the first 2 digits to the left you will notice some wiggle room side to side, which allows you to pull the last two numbers to the left and manually advance those digits forward to zero, in essence setting them all to zero after using the dremel trick. You can hear the plastic ratchet parts clicking really fast as you advance with the dremel, but it didn't break mine. Now my new odometer reads 000058 miles. Very nice way to keep track of service and oil change intervals.
The only drawback to using the rubber dremel wheel trick is that the printed numbers on the fractional wheel will partially rub off, but this is unimportant to me, since it's the whole numbers that count for me, and there's a trip meter above that shows fractional miles as well.

Dumb question but how do you remove the needles on the gauges to pull the gauge face off?

I was not doing it to miss-lead anyone, I was replacing a Broken speedometer and simply wanted to make the mileage match.

1988, vehicle was fine but speedometer was broken, matching mileage on replacement prior to install. ...I assume most speedometers work similar when taken apart...
