The crime of car odometer roll back has been going on a long time. I was born in 1951 and even during my childhood growing up odometer roll back was going on in the cars with completely mechanical odometers. Also back then there were people who would disconnect the speedometer cable for a period of time to extend the car warranty out to its time limit, so that the mileage limit would not come first.
On older cars its super easy to know if it's rolled, look at the numbers if they are not perfectly aligned, if you see the slightest variation, it'd rolled, no questions. These is absolutely ZERO possibility of any other reason, and I speak from 15+ years cutting my teeth in the dog world of the used cars as a sales manager.
Just bought an 88 ford ranger supposed to have 70k miles on it . The truck for the most part is in great condition and runs great the guy I bought it from was a younger guy and said only him and his grandpa owned it . Title says exempt just saw your comment and checked the odemeter they are not lined up perfectly . So is this a Forsure sign of someone trying g to hide the miles would you say? Thanks bro
10 year jail or confiscated would be nice to anyone who rolling back miles and anyone who takes own car to someone to roll back before sale or lease return. That's it. No excuse .
You go get a car history report check. if the car has a log book, see if its consistent with the car's condition then make your own decision. Went to go check out a potential car and paid for a car history check. Paid nearly $40 and saved myself 1000's which had its odometer rolled back over 30,000km over 10 years ago. Walked away. My advice, no logbook no purchase. You don't know what the mileage is.
A car’s odometer can still be tampered with even with a “log book,” though. It’s helpful but myself I go with a thorough inspection that pays for itself big time - even if you don’t buy the car.
Bruh it’s an obd2 scanner they aren’t usually used to do illegal stuff they’re usually used by mechanics to see if anything isn’t running right in a car
And as said Before, When an ECM is replaced with a new one if its storing the mileage it needs to be set to the correct value. I just had it done on mine and we entered the accurate mileage, so the tool is not just for deception !!
Those checks are not nearly enough. Pay a qualified mechanic to inspect any used car. You have to build these inspections into the price of that used car. Otherwise you are just begging to be ripped off BIG time, unfortunately.
It's quite cheap to reupholster or replace the seats, same goes for steering wheel, shifter knob, and foot pedal rubber sleeves. Smart people also use mileage blockers, so even checking the station can't help you. If someone puts a bit of effort into making the car look low mileage there is no way to detect it, period
How about a mandatory 5 to)7 years in prison for this crime. Believe me anyone considering tampering with the odometer would think twice or perhaps thrice.
Those clusters they showed where early 2000s gm truck clusters. It is extremely common for those to mess up and need rebuild or replacement. I’ve redone mine twice in the 9 years I’ve had it. Often people will get one from a junkyard to replace it and that will show a different mileage. Is that fraud or repair? I rebuilt mine so it says the correct mileage but I wouldn’t call it fraud for someone to replace their gauge cluster with one that shows a different mileage. Some of those alleged 34k odometer frauds are BS. That jag is not a super rare or super expensive collector car to want to lie about mileage on a car that he sold for 5000.00 .I bet the speedo/odometer took a shit at xxx,xxx miles so the guy replaced it. If these are the serious problems Denver news reports I think I need to move there.
Okay so I do actually remember a car where they were saying you can't go in and reprogram the odometer and people were saying you can't technically cheat it and what I've actually seen people do is they would go buy an entirely new ECM and body control module put that in the car and look now all of a sudden you actually have to go into the ECM and check and see if the VIN number actually matches the one of the door panel and sometimes it does not that's a telltale sign that maybe your dominant has been rolled back if the VIN number does not match or possibly it could have just been that they bought a new engine but that's rare
Thanks for telling us. I'm sure everyone are now going to be checking from here on out. I know I'll be dang sure I check mines! Luckily, I bought my truck from an honest, normal man before all this mess started.
There’s always a convenient place crooks can learn to be crooks. A news report that helps consumers from having thousands of dollars stolen from them...don’t be naive. And don’t leave silly comments. This thread probably has 10 comments, left by adolescents, saying the same thing. Boring.
Another way to find odometer tampering is to check the average miles the car has run per year and year the tyres are manufactured and calculate the miles. We can get a ballpark figure. A sedan runs about 30000 kilometres per year. Its a matter of simple maths.
I paid my life saving for a van, that has a mileage of 129000 miles. But the mileage reading is not real. The real mileage is close to 400k miles. That's a catastrophe! Now I'm stuck with a van that I can't use, because it's too old. My life has been ruined, and I need help! What can I do? Where should I go?
Thank you Randy! I'm getting over it..... And next time I'm gonna buy my vehicles from a well known dealership in the neighborhood. Have a great weekend!
@@SG-qi5sr PLEASE friends! You must PAY actual money to a real mechanic to inspect before you buy any vehicle. Dealerships lie, cheat & scam, I promise you! This breaks my heart, but you were almost asking for this if you didn’t pay to have it inspected. It’s part of the cost of a used vehicle, unfortunately.
You do realise that rubber cover of pedals are the easiest to be replaced with new ones. Steering wheel can do . Look all over the car to gauge the wear and tear. Under the hood and under the car and inside interior .
How to detect clocking when they do it before going in for any inspections/mot’s/service or whatever ? This is the real question they do it before it will get recorded every time
They are trying to make you think you can catch this but you cannot, if they block the mileage from being recorded in the first place, there will be no rollback or discrepancy. We are all absolutely helpless.
Buy from a reputable dealer.... if your seller is a “mechanic” and he’s fixed up the car... chances are he has done this!!! Or take it to the makes dealership for inspection... do not give into high pressure sales... they are trying to use their ‘good deal’ as a psych tactic
That jag probably had a 5 digit odometer which means after it hits 99k you can’t tell if it’s under or over 100k miles without being the original owner or having a car fax in which that would not be fraud nor the guys fault who sold it to you
I mainly want to learn how to turn back the odometer on the older chevys bc i plan on putting a fresh engine and transmission in on a 1 80 squarebody restro project and want accurate mileage
I will see a scam when the car has no maintenance history book, the VIN can't be tracked by the dealership and if there was no database that tracks the vehicles' mileage.
I bought a Chrysler 300c about 5 years back and the title said close to the odometer when I registered it in my state (a different state than it was purchased) the title they gave me said 40k miles over what it had an the dmv told me that was the last reported mileage 2 years ago
We bought a car from copart, and the odometer had been rolled back .It was advertised as a 65k mile car, and my scanner showed way over 100k on it. Luckily, it wasn't a big money vehicle
My uncle got a very nice 2007 Toyota Tundra silver with 4 doors for $17,000 with "127k miles" when we ran carfax we found out it actually had over 238k miles! He told the previous owner about this and he just said its because he replaced the engine but idk if thats true but my uncle doesnt care.
As Auto tech who does miles rollbacks should go to prison. Most cars on the road are leased and when people do oil change or minor repair they dont want to report the miles. I Allways put their miles in my system without letting theme know .
Fraud is everywhere, in Canada and USA... I believe my car have been tampered with at the Honda car dealer or while it was parking over night at my living place. Just be aware about who has access to your car while you are sleeping, or while you are away. I have Honda Civic 2012 and it recently started this problem: The "Range" meter in the front dash board shows distance traveled of 12 KM when in fact the GPS shows the real deistance is 6 KM. I can get this information (traveled distance) by substracting the Destination Point reading (from Range indicator) from the Starting point reading. The question is: why my Honda Range Indicator says that the distance traveled is 12 KM when the actual distance travelled is 6 KM? Also, Why my Gas tank now a days is draining like crazy? Have anyone had this problem? Where do I find answer without paying hundreds of dollars to Honda dealer or car repair shops? This is really a big problem for many of us.
From the other perspective… I have a Jeep grand Cherokee with 112,000 miles and a failing CD display. If I'd like to continue using my car I can give the dealer $3000 for backstock seven year old instrument display or I can buy a junker for $90. The junkyard part needs to have the mileage corrected to be consistent with the true mileage of my car - because I'm an honest guy and I'm not selling my jeep. I think what I'm trying to say. Here is not everyone who uses these tools is a scammer… I'm picking up my new instrument cluster today, I'll be using one of these tools to increase the mileage that the previous owner crashed his jeep at.
Rest of the car condition inside can easily tell you about the mileage. Door step seats side dashboard everything easily telling the extreme usage of car
I tend to my vehicles really well, that for example, my 230,000 mile Dakota's interior, exterior, and mechanical condition can easily pass for about 80,000 miles, and being a small slender guy who is easy on vehicles, can attest.
The plastic or cheaper recycled rubber pedal cover's are absolutely no indication at all of odometer trueness ot Roll back because the goon's who perposely Roll back odometers may think also to simply replace replaceable pedal cover's even the cheaper prices better looking cover's from auto wreckers.
I not only inspect used cars but also for my services guarantee that the car is legit. If u have any issues with the car I buy it back from u. I have hundreds of happy customers!
So does the milage follow the power train or the car body. If the power train is "new" there is no milage... So that make you ask the question does the milage follow the power train or the body of the car???

Old jags are notorious for headaches
They should put the link for the roll back tool in the description too
I could use it
Too easy, China of course.
I wouldn’t have paid 200 dollars for that car
😂😂😂
Cheap Jags are absolutely everywhere. At some point you have to ask yourself why.
The Jaguar would have needed all that work if it only had 50 miles on it.
Even if the Jaguar has 42k on it new owner would still be repairing everything!
A little due diligence on the part of the buyer goes a long way.
If someone gave me a jaguar for free i wouldn't take it
AND where is the law that put thief in jail for this? It's clearly a fraud and should be punished to the fullest. Oh, I forgot politicians are driving brand new cars with taxpayers' money, so they don't even care.
Mate, you bought an early 90s Jag....
Thanks bro
How far back would say you is old ?
@@gunslinga7077
Absolutely, not even a question.
What about digital odometers
@@ehteshamkaunaine7417ye or digital odometers
unfortunately i was deceived on this odometer thing. when bought my first car a while ago.
This is just an ad for carfax
If something is “free” then you and your information are the product they are selling
10 year jail or confiscated would be nice to anyone who rolling back miles and anyone who takes own car to someone to roll back before sale or lease return. That's it. No excuse .
Absolutely! But unless everyday people like us call and email our state reps - it will never change.
Like who or where?
He spent 17k on a car that cost $500.. his the idiot not the seller
Why do u have a scanner for rolling back odometers lol I think they need to investigate you to
The scanner is used for many things, reading error codes and such is it's main purpose.
What! You mean car dealers lie? No way
So in short check Carfax before buying and examine steering wheel and brake pedal for excessive wear.
Those checks are not nearly enough. Pay a qualified mechanic to inspect any used car. You have to build these inspections into the price of that used car. Otherwise you are just begging to be ripped off BIG time, unfortunately.
Good indicator is checking out the interior seat condition, especially driver seat for wear and tear.
People should be punched in the face for tampering with the odometer!
If you're looking at a 30 year old car that's "sitting in a field" why would you even care enough to see what's on the odometer?
And a jaguar no less! Amazing anything ever works on it
The video is showing it can be done it doesn’t matter if it’s been sitting in a field or if it it’s trumps brain
Cryptonymicus 😂😂😂
Be nice.
@@yinkasantacruz6708 Lol! Ikr.
How about a mandatory 5 to)7 years in prison for this crime. Believe me anyone considering tampering with the odometer would think twice or perhaps thrice.
It's an XJS. They were terrible when they had 42 miles on them. Let alone 142k miles on them. They were forever in the shop for service.
Na it isn't fraud to change your cluster. It's fraud to change it, have it reading less miles and sell it to someone.
Okay so I do actually remember a car where they were saying you can't go in and reprogram the odometer and people were saying you can't technically cheat it and what I've actually seen people do is they would go buy an entirely new ECM and body control module put that in the car and look now all of a sudden you actually have to go into the ECM and check and see if the VIN number actually matches the one of the door panel and sometimes it does not that's a telltale sign that maybe your dominant has been rolled back if the VIN number does not match or possibly it could have just been that they bought a new engine but that's rare
no wonder so many people swap jag engines with GM v8's
Thank you for telling me where to buy a rollback machine.
Christopher Tozer in Woodland Park, CO did this to me! He’s a mechanic who flips cars, jumped the title & lied his ass off
Thanks for telling us. I'm sure everyone are now going to be checking from here on out. I know I'll be dang sure I check mines!
Luckily, I bought my truck from an honest, normal man before all this mess started.
Who would’ve thought the news would teach people how to be crooks
There’s always a convenient place crooks can learn to be crooks. A news report that helps consumers from having thousands of dollars stolen from them...don’t be naive. And don’t leave silly comments. This thread probably has 10 comments, left by adolescents, saying the same thing. Boring.
Its called, DANGEROUS Freedom for a reason baby!
You got screwed man. Can't you make a police report?
You do realise that rubber cover of pedals are the easiest to be replaced with new ones. Steering wheel can do .
Look all over the car to gauge the wear and tear. Under the hood and under the car and inside interior .
Its so easy to find a new looking steering wheel from a junkyard.
How to detect clocking when they do it before going in for any inspections/mot’s/service or whatever ? This is the real question they do it before it will get recorded every time
when a criminal asks you back for reassurance ''oh, it is illegal''? in his jargon it means something else, you silly.
You don't think a seller on craigslist would do such a thing do you?
You’re indicting CL but ANY site will have thieves selling cars - including “nice” dealerships.”
They are trying to make you think you can catch this but you cannot, if they block the mileage from being recorded in the first place, there will be no rollback or discrepancy. We are all absolutely helpless.
On BMWs they have a dot next to the mileage to indicate tampering. Not sure if other cars have something like that though.
Why is this new station given people ideas how to rip the public off !!!!!!!!!!
The message is odometers are worthless.
Buy from a reputable dealer.... if your seller is a “mechanic” and he’s fixed up the car... chances are he has done this!!! Or take it to the makes dealership for inspection... do not give into high pressure sales... they are trying to use their ‘good deal’ as a psych tactic
😂😂😂 dealership is the main ones be rolling back odometers
It's a Jaguar, it could have 2 miles and it would need a full rebuild.
That’s right
Sounds like CarFax marketing to me 💀
it should be about a 20 year prison sentence for this crime
That jag probably had a 5 digit odometer which means after it hits 99k you can’t tell if it’s under or over 100k miles without being the original owner or having a car fax in which that would not be fraud nor the guys fault who sold it to you
I mainly want to learn how to turn back the odometer on the older chevys bc i plan on putting a fresh engine and transmission in on a 1
80 squarebody restro project and want accurate mileage
sooo… how should we spot if a car’s odometer is rollbacked?
I will see a scam when the car has no maintenance history book, the VIN can't be tracked by the dealership and if there was no database that tracks the vehicles' mileage.
I bought a Chrysler 300c about 5 years back and the title said close to the odometer when I registered it in my state (a different state than it was purchased) the title they gave me said 40k miles over what it had an the dmv told me that was the last reported mileage 2 years ago
checking the steering wheel and brake petal? that doesn't tell you anything!
They need to make it illegal to tamper with the odometer with hefty fines if caught.
We bought a car from copart, and the odometer had been rolled back .It was advertised as a 65k mile car, and my scanner showed way over 100k on it. Luckily, it wasn't a big money vehicle
Cool so how can I reduce the number on my honda shadow?
My uncle got a very nice 2007 Toyota Tundra silver with 4 doors for $17,000 with "127k miles" when we ran carfax we found out it actually had over 238k miles! He told the previous owner about this and he just said its because he replaced the engine but idk if thats true but my uncle doesnt care.
As Auto tech who does miles rollbacks should go to prison.
Most cars on the road are leased and when people do oil change or minor repair they dont want to report the miles. I Allways put their miles in my system without letting theme know .
Just bought a 2012 CRV with 133K and am trying to figure if it has original miles. I may take it to an expert.
It’s a 30 year old car and somebody convinced you it was only 42k? Smh
Michigan needs to crack down on this topic
Dude didnt check the carfax when buying a used car plus it’s an old jag that thing would be a pile regardless of what miles it had
THIS SHOULD STOP AND BE REPORTED EVERYWHERE OMG
Problem in many states is the dmv applies EXEMPT for mileage on certain age vehicles. There's not much of a way ypu can find it
The plastic or cheaper recycled rubber pedal cover's are absolutely no indication at all of odometer trueness ot Roll back because the goon's who perposely Roll back odometers may think also to simply replace replaceable pedal cover's even the cheaper prices better looking cover's from auto wreckers.
Spanish guy did fraud.
I bought car from him. The car had 106000 mileage
I check car history. The car mileage was 2036360
Theres a reason why no one trusts the mexicans. You just got lucky.
Without the odometer rollback, the Jaguar will still need to sit in the shop for a while.
I not only inspect used cars but also for my services guarantee that the car is legit. If u have any issues with the car I buy it back from u. I have hundreds of happy customers!
1.46 into the video and I still didn't know how odometers are rolled back
Me either.
I don’t by a car based on mileage.
I buy a car based on condition. It doesn’t matter if it had done a million miles
Great info, Im ordering one now!
lol
😂😂😂
useless video it doesnt show you how to spot click bait
I mean if it says mileage exempt what do you expect
So does the milage follow the power train or the car body. If the power train is "new" there is no milage... So that make you ask the question does the milage follow the power train or the body of the car???
