Buy a decent import that doesn't need an oil change more than once each year and don't go to some POS garage, amerikkka has Costco, I think they do oil changes, and they are a great company.
This is why I always do my own maintenance. My car requires full synthetic. It costs me around $35 for a filter & 6.5 qts. & I can dispose of the old oil at a local shop for free.

I bought a Honda SUV that lets me know when the oil needs to be changed and that's about twice per year because I drive a lot. But many cars now need only one change each year.

there are a bunch of reasons why people take it to mechanics even if they know how to change it. most people do not have a garage and chaning your oil on the side of the road is little awkward. weather could be a reason also,you don't wanna change your oile when its -10.

AutOdometer absolutely, as a former mechanic I can say it’s rarely the employees that cheat folks... most of the time it’s the management or owners squeezing whatever profit they can out of customers. I ended up walking out after seeing the owner of my company charge a little old lady for a full AC rebuild when all that was wrong was a $30 relay. I ended up waiting till the customer returned to pick up her truck, told her what she really owed the boss, then left for good.
Some cars are not as simple as you think. For some, a filter cup is required and you really need to get under the car. If you don't have a lift i don't know how thehell an average joe will get that off lol im telling you this because i work at a shop
I’ve changed the oil in all my equipment & I know that what I put on them is the good stuff. I put the Lucas oil additive in my 7.3 & She runs better than ever! 4000 almost 5000 miles later it’s time for another oil change. More oil to filter to make black Diesel for my injectors. They like 5-10% Or a quart of oil every fill up. I take very good care of my stuff, if something breaks on my watch I know it’s not because I didn’t maintain it right.
Probably happens a lot more than we think. I just changed my oil from a BMW dealer after 9 months and it looks dark as black coffee and thick like creamed soup. Pretty confident they didn’t change my oil…
this happens to me at Brake Master. They charged me $70 for a transmission oil change but never touch anything. I confronted the damn manager and he had his technician replaced my transmission oil.
I do my own oilchanges. Its about 90 dollars for 4 liters of oil and the filter+new crusher washer - and that is if the oil is on sale. I do not live in the US. I use OEM filter (think it is bosch for this car) and Castrol Edge full syntetic 5W-30.

I’ve caught garages and even dealers charging me for work they never did. When I have caught them on it their excuse always is “oh sorry the tech forgot”. Forgot, sure. Do not trust any shop to do what they say they’re doing. Ask to save the old parts for you.
That is why I have been my own mechanic for 25 years and I give myself life warranty in all jobs everytime. I have cars with more than 150k miles running perfect.

Well. Deisel engines are around 150 for a straight oil change over here. Plus, 90 percent of vehicles come with synthetic now. The new silverados take 8 1/2 quarts of 0w-20. Bout 80 dollars

You can easily check to see if they changed the oil by checking the color before and after the oil change on the dipstick. Before the oil change, the oil will be black. After the oil change the oil should be light brown, almost like honey.

I noticed that too, and i do my own oil, and my car calls for synthetic so... either regular oil went way down in price or he means for the service. But I've had a couple times where i needed an oil change, and had no way of doing it myself. Unless i crawled through mud. So once i took my own oil and filter and went to a place where this guy charged me $20 to do it. It was after hours and he pocketed the money worked out for both of us i guess. More recently i went to a place, but they refused to use my oil & filter. They also asked $70. So screw that. Couple days later i got ahold of a friend with a garage, he did it for $10. It's ridiculous what they charge at garages though, and mostly it's because everyone wants to make their share off you. There's the garage owner then the mechanics who work for them. That's why they charge like $100 an hour. $100 an hour... then whatever they ask for the parts which might not be top quality either.
if you're paying less than 100 for a tuneup they're either putting I. cheap knockoff parts or not even doing the job. u can't even get plugs and wires for under a hundred from the parts store

I was pregnant @ the time my car needed oil changed. I was told I wasn't allowed in service bay "insurance regulations" however, just out side the bay door I watched my oil being changed. The break ring on the bottom of lids were already broken. Took their asses to court, won & now do my own changes. Screw me over & you'll get the butt hurt.

One service job I can’t do on a car: wheel alignment. Everything else is relatively easy. Oil change in a car: Easy so long as the filter isn’t buried by too many covers or leads.

i have a wrangler on 40" nittos on 17" wheels that has never been to an alignment rack, even after 7" of lift, new dana 60 axles and a full set of fully adjustable control arms that i have installed myself in a garage without a lift. hell, i even installed the tires on the wheels myself! no excuses! shops are a ripoff for, and are usually serviced by the lowest payed employees! no. fucking. thanks!
You have to have a proper jack and jack stands, crawl under your car, drain the oil (some of which leaks to your driveway--same thing with changing the filter), make damn sure you don't cross thread the filter or the fill plug when replacing them then take the oil and filter to a recycle site. NO, I'll go to Valvoline instead.
Is two different systems but oil has a lot to do with an engine's performance so sorry to bust your bubble but well lubricated crank and cam ahafts and pistons can be called a tune up but i say a lube up sounds way better lol

Old oil can create more drag on the engine than new oil, and some modern engines call for the thinnest weight of oil available, such as 0W-08 in the Toyota Crown, which was only recently approved for use by the American regulator. Of course, the gain would be negligible, but it could be measured.

I worked at a Valvoline Instant Oil change for 1 month. I had to quit. They had me put dirt on transmission dip sticks to push for a $75 "Transmission Flush Service" They told me if a Oil filter was hard to reach or take off to wipe it clean and not worry about it. And they also would push people into changing the air filter every oil change. And tild me not to do grease fittings if the customer didnt ask about it. Even if they paid for it. I couldnt cheat people or lie to them like the boss wanted me to. Most of those places are a rip off.

Seriously? $90+ ??? I work at a Toyota dealership and we only use synthetic (unless the customer specifies otherwise or vehicle absolutely requires conventional) for our oil changes and its only $69. That not only includes the oil change but also covers all fluid top-ups and a full front-to-back examination of the vehicle for things like brakes, lights, wipers, and tire condition. It even comes with a free car wash! Takes roughly 30 minutes, but you can be damned sure your vehicle is in good shape when we're done. You even get a signed report from the technician outlining the details of the inspection. We service all makes and models too, not just Toyota. People, seriously, check with your area dealerships before going to these express oil change places. You might be getting ripped off for more than just the type of oil used.

I could never rip off a customer. I think of something like that happening to my mother, wife, daughter, or anyone for that matter. So why does it happen? I could never condone ripping anyone off for any reason. But I will say this, I was in retail auto repair for 26 years. And it isn’t what it used to be. At one time it was a good way to make an honest living. It was undoubtedly hard work with long hours some times. But at the end of the day you felt like you made a good honest living. The overhead was manageable. Uniforms, tools, licenses, repair manuals. Pretty much like any other businesses. Over the last few years taxes and environmental fees slowly chipped away at profits. At one time companies bought used oil and fluids to recycle. Now it is considered hazardous waste and the fees to have it hauled away are astronomical. There are fees and taxes attached to almost every part of the business which must be passed on to customers that drive up the costs of simple repairs. Raising the labor rates to cover those costs now makes the garage appear to be a rip off. In 26 years I watched the shop labor rate go from $19 an hour to $80 an hour. Profits certainly didn’t go up at that rate. If anything, they remained flat. Instead of shorting the customers to make a profit, I got out of the business. As I said, the auto repair business is not what it used to be.
Got a friend who is an ex auto mechanic who left the business. Got tired of being pressured by the boss man to rip off customers, got tired of the immigrants who didn’t know what they were doing messing up his work, got sick of the disgusting behavior between the other mechanics, and had had enough of the owner and the owner’s son fighting each other.
It's not that I don't trust them. But I already pay a premium for changing my own: $50 for 5 qts of full synthetic, $15 for a K&N cloth filter. I'd rather pay $65 and do it myself and know what's in that crankcase than over $100 for an oil jockey at a drive-thru. I pay that much because I plan to keep my cars for a long time.

I recommend everyone to do their own oil changes. You will save at least 50% of what the dealer or service shop would charge and you know exactly what you are putting in your engine.
My cummins holds 3 gallons of oil, has an oil filter that has to be accessed from the wheel well and the filter, full of oil, tilted to bring it out. Its not always a cake walk. However, you are correct, you should be able to perform all basic maintenance on your vehicle.
If I were one of those "former employees," I would've recorded these conversations with the manager so I could prove on air (and in court as well) that the scam was on their orders.

You're overpaying...or buying a sandwich at Firehouse subs and getting quadruple meat. Every year Mobil and Castrol do rebates and 5qts of full synthetic comes out to $10. Stock up. I buy OEM Lexus and Toyota filters from online dealers that offer discount prices, $5 a filter with new drain bolt washer. Costco ran a deal a few months ago on their Kirkland full synthetic, $20.60 for 12qts delivered. I bought the limit of 5 (60qts) for just over $100.

I've changed oil on cars professionally for years. And we will only put the type of oil in that your car calls for as recommended by the manufacture. Lots of these new cars today call for synthetic oil. Where I work cars come in all of the time to get their oil changed. I've had no choice even when the customer comes in and says that they want conventional oil. We'll straight up tell them NO we can't do it, even if it means I have to back the car out. Too much liability on these cars today, to not do it correctly. Especially when a car is still under warranty, and we're not in the business to ruin or to buy engines.
So say a customer brought a classic 1970s Chevrolet K10 in which calls for 10w-30 from the factory. It's over 350k miles and happily runs on 20w-50, no noises or ticks. Would you still use 10w-30 and potentially cause issues from running too thin oil with worn tolerances, use 20w-50, or just flat out refuse the job? I've always wondered how oil changes were handled on the classic cars/trucks that need thicker oil due to worn tolerances. Not trying to attack you or be a dick, I'm just curious how that situation would be handled.
The fresh oil in the car looked dirty for a gas engine. They might not even change the oil. And they could strip the drain plug, or not tighten it. Who knows. This country is becoming a big scam game. That’s how ingenuity is put to work anymore. May the best scammer win.
When I first put semi synthetic with a zinc additive in my car I was surprised by how long it stayed clean. The conventional would turn dark in less than a week but the semi synthetic took over a month. My car has a flat tappet cam so I was a bit wary about using the semi synthetic, because synthetic oils for newer engines and roller cams don't require as much zinc as the older flat tappet engines. And putting full synthetic in my car has a chance of ruining the flat tappet cam. so I got a zinc additive oil treatment with stopleak for added peace of mind. That stop leak works too, as long as the oil was clean the level never changed. My car has a slight rear main leak and probably also a front main leak, but they're not too bad. After it started turning dark then I noticed that I have to check it every so often

Mechanics never remove all the oil. There is always 1/2 quart left in the drain pan. In and out no time to let all the oil drain. Takes about 45 minutes.

I do my own oilchanges. Its about 90 dollars for 4 liters of oil and the filter+new crusher washer - and that is if the oil is on sale. I do not live in the US. I use OEM filter (think it is bosch for this car) and Castrol Edge full syntetic 5W-30.

Well. Deisel engines are around 150 for a straight oil change over here. Plus, 90 percent of vehicles come with synthetic now. The new silverados take 8 1/2 quarts of 0w-20. Bout 80 dollars

You can easily check to see if they changed the oil by checking the color before and after the oil change on the dipstick. Before the oil change, the oil will be black. After the oil change the oil should be light brown, almost like honey.

I noticed that too, and i do my own oil, and my car calls for synthetic so... either regular oil went way down in price or he means for the service.
But I've had a couple times where i needed an oil change, and had no way of doing it myself. Unless i crawled through mud. So once i took my own oil and filter and went to a place where this guy charged me $20 to do it. It was after hours and he pocketed the money worked out for both of us i guess.
More recently i went to a place, but they refused to use my oil & filter. They also asked $70. So screw that. Couple days later i got ahold of a friend with a garage, he did it for $10.
It's ridiculous what they charge at garages though, and mostly it's because everyone wants to make their share off you. There's the garage owner then the mechanics who work for them. That's why they charge like $100 an hour. $100 an hour... then whatever they ask for the parts which might not be top quality either.
I mean, paying someone else to change your oil is a scam in it of itself....

I was pregnant @ the time my car needed oil changed. I was told I wasn't allowed in service bay "insurance regulations" however, just out side the bay door I watched my oil being changed. The break ring on the bottom of lids were already broken. Took their asses to court, won & now do my own changes. Screw me over & you'll get the butt hurt.

i have a wrangler on 40" nittos on 17" wheels that has never been to an alignment rack, even after 7" of lift, new dana 60 axles and a full set of fully adjustable control arms that i have installed myself in a garage without a lift. hell, i even installed the tires on the wheels myself! no excuses! shops are a ripoff for, and are usually serviced by the lowest payed employees! no. fucking. thanks!

You have to have a proper jack and jack stands, crawl under your car, drain the oil (some of which leaks to your driveway--same thing with changing the filter), make damn sure you don't cross thread the filter or the fill plug when replacing them then take the oil and filter to a recycle site. NO, I'll go to Valvoline instead.

They told me if a Oil filter was hard to reach or take off to wipe it clean and not worry about it.

I work at a Toyota dealership and we only use synthetic (unless the customer specifies otherwise or vehicle absolutely requires conventional) for our oil changes and its only $69. That not only includes the oil change but also covers all fluid top-ups and a full front-to-back examination of the vehicle for things like brakes, lights, wipers, and tire condition. It even comes with a free car wash! Takes roughly 30 minutes, but you can be damned sure your vehicle is in good shape when we're done. You even get a signed report from the technician outlining the details of the inspection. We service all makes and models too, not just Toyota.
People, seriously, check with your area dealerships before going to these express oil change places. You might be getting ripped off for more than just the type of oil used.

I could never rip off a customer. I think of something like that happening to my mother, wife, daughter, or anyone for that matter. So why does it happen?
I could never condone ripping anyone off for any reason. But I will say this, I was in retail auto repair for 26 years. And it isn’t what it used to be. At one time it was a good way to make an honest living. It was undoubtedly hard work with long hours some times. But at the end of the day you felt like you made a good honest living. The overhead was manageable. Uniforms, tools, licenses, repair manuals. Pretty much like any other businesses.
Over the last few years taxes and environmental fees slowly chipped away at profits. At one time companies bought used oil and fluids to recycle. Now it is considered hazardous waste and the fees to have it hauled away are astronomical. There are fees and taxes attached to almost every part of the business which must be passed on to customers that drive up the costs of simple repairs.
Raising the labor rates to cover those costs now makes the garage appear to be a rip off. In 26 years I watched the shop labor rate go from $19 an hour to $80 an hour. Profits certainly didn’t go up at that rate. If anything, they remained flat. Instead of shorting the customers to make a profit, I got out of the business. As I said, the auto repair business is not what it used to be.
Got a friend who is an ex auto mechanic who left the business. Got tired of being pressured by the boss man to rip off customers, got tired of the immigrants who didn’t know what they were doing messing up his work, got sick of the disgusting behavior between the other mechanics, and had had enough of the owner and the owner’s son fighting each other.
This is one of the reasons I do all my own maintenance!

It's not that I don't trust them. But I already pay a premium for changing my own: $50 for 5 qts of full synthetic, $15 for a K&N cloth filter. I'd rather pay $65 and do it myself and know what's in that crankcase than over $100 for an oil jockey at a drive-thru. I pay that much because I plan to keep my cars for a long time.
@@ApartmentKing66 You’re being shafted if you’re paying $50 for five quarts of full synthetic. K&N filters also have a tendency to starve the engine for oil. You’re better off using Mobil 1 oil and filters.

I recommend everyone to do their own oil changes. You will save at least 50% of what the dealer or service shop would charge and you know exactly what you are putting in your engine.

My cummins holds 3 gallons of oil, has an oil filter that has to be accessed from the wheel well and the filter, full of oil, tilted to bring it out. Its not always a cake walk. However, you are correct, you should be able to perform all basic maintenance on your vehicle.

I work as an express tech at a Honda dealer, and this makes me disgusted, ruins the whole car repair business for people that do it right like me... I’m an express tech but I do a lot more than oil changes and I’m moving up...

Now I'm worried about all the oil I got at auto zone. That I took to mechanics to change. I got the best oil you could by .did they switch the oil and keep the expensive oil for there own car. Makes me think.

Well as a guy w an old diesel where the oil is black after 1000 miles when I check oil on my tractors it looks like there’s still plenty of like in the oil.

If the engine is sludged up a little, new oil will look darker after about 5 miles.
I've changed my own oil since I was 13. My dad taught me, if you want to drive this truck your gonna learn to take care of it. I can buy oil, an oil filter, Sandwich, and a 1 liter of mountain dew for $50.
You're overpaying...or buying a sandwich at Firehouse subs and getting quadruple meat. Every year Mobil and Castrol do rebates and 5qts of full synthetic comes out to $10. Stock up. I buy OEM Lexus and Toyota filters from online dealers that offer discount prices, $5 a filter with new drain bolt washer. Costco ran a deal a few months ago on their Kirkland full synthetic, $20.60 for 12qts delivered. I bought the limit of 5 (60qts) for just over $100.
@@michaelangelo5783 nah I get 15W-40 high mileage oil for like 24.00, a filter for 10 (I buy K&N filters cause they have a nut on the bottom and I hate oil filter wrenches) a 1 liter is $1 and then a sandwhich from subway is about $9 (footlong chicken bacon ranch) so that came out to $44 and thats fine with me, I dont buy foreign crap for my truck.
I've changed oil on cars professionally for years. And we will only put the type of oil in that your car calls for as recommended by the manufacture. Lots of these new cars today call for synthetic oil. Where I work cars come in all of the time to get their oil changed. I've had no choice even when the customer comes in and says that they want conventional oil. We'll straight up tell them NO we can't do it, even if it means I have to back the car out. Too much liability on these cars today, to not do it correctly. Especially when a car is still under warranty, and we're not in the business to ruin or to buy engines.
So say a customer brought a classic 1970s Chevrolet K10 in which calls for 10w-30 from the factory. It's over 350k miles and happily runs on 20w-50, no noises or ticks. Would you still use 10w-30 and potentially cause issues from running too thin oil with worn tolerances, use 20w-50, or just flat out refuse the job? I've always wondered how oil changes were handled on the classic cars/trucks that need thicker oil due to worn tolerances. Not trying to attack you or be a dick, I'm just curious how that situation would be handled.
Usually there a waiver when they sign to get their car worked on so you're not really liable for putting the oil they want into their vehicle

The fresh oil in the car looked dirty for a gas engine. They might not even change the oil. And they could strip the drain plug, or not tighten it. Who knows. This country is becoming a big scam game. That’s how ingenuity is put to work anymore. May the best scammer win.
I started changing my own oil. i can tell by how long the oil takes to turn dark to know they were giving me conventional oil.
When I first put semi synthetic with a zinc additive in my car I was surprised by how long it stayed clean. The conventional would turn dark in less than a week but the semi synthetic took over a month. My car has a flat tappet cam so I was a bit wary about using the semi synthetic, because synthetic oils for newer engines and roller cams don't require as much zinc as the older flat tappet engines. And putting full synthetic in my car has a chance of ruining the flat tappet cam. so I got a zinc additive oil treatment with stopleak for added peace of mind. That stop leak works too, as long as the oil was clean the level never changed. My car has a slight rear main leak and probably also a front main leak, but they're not too bad. After it started turning dark then I noticed that I have to check it every so often
Mechanics never remove all the oil. There is always 1/2 quart left in the drain pan. In and out no time to let all the oil drain. Takes about 45 minutes.
