Okay I just bought one of these 2022 Keystone Cougar 25RDS ("East" version, with the front cap window).
Here are some things to consider and some practical insights:
SolarFlex 400i installed at the factory. They're installed on opposing sides of the arched so the angles are slightly different and you don't get even exposure to the panels. However, they are good panels and when it's sunny you get good current that helps keep the batteries topped off. We did deplete the batteries the second day we had this rig, while dry camping in freezing weather (about 17 degrees Fahrenheit) by running the furnace at 63 degrees F and having the waster water tank heater on - took about 8-9 hours to drain the batteries down to about 5.0 volts, so not too crazy. You'll know when the battery voltage is low because your carbon monoxide detector will start beeping intermittently and you cannot ignore it. Since it was dark and we had no generator, had to run the truck for about an hour to get the batteries charged up enough to bring our slide in so we could travel. The driving and solar panels restored the battery charge by the time we got home about 6 hours later.
SIDE NOTE: Even though it was 17 degrees outside it was still 44 degrees in the coach, so kudos to the climate package / insulation for doing it's job.
Dealer installed roof vent covers (x2) as they don't come covered from the factory, and if you want to have your vents open when it's raining or snowing, you'll be glad you spent the few extra bucks for the vent covers.
Factory installed vent fan in the bathroom is just alright. It's one of those tiny 12v fans vs. the large, full vent area fans. I'm not even sure it ventilates to be honest. Consider upgrading to a bigger, better fan.
No factory installed vent fan in the vent over the bed at the front of the coach. I'll be getting a Fantastic Fan installed her next visit to the dealer!
Dealer installed Thin Shades on the door windows, as they come without covers from the factory, but they do have that distorted glass. It's nice for privacy. However, if you want to open the shades, you have to open the door and screen to get to the shade - you can't do it with the door shut so plan ahead.
There is no toilet paper holder.
The shower doors are heavy and there are 3 pieces of glass. If your trailer is not level front to back, the doors tend to slide open while you're showering so keep that in mind. The factory installed shower head is great, adjustable (full shower, more focused water stream, and off), and well-placed for taller people. Plenty of room as well (I'm 6'3" and much more rotund than Josh), especially with the skylight right above the shower enclosure.
The blackout shades are nice, but the rollup mechanism is strong and if you don't hang onto them while lifting them, they go all the up to the top of the roller and it's a bugger getting them back down - so hang onto the shades when you're rolling them up!
The front cap window is nice, but if it's cold outside and you're running your propane furnace, you may see quite a bit of condensation that accumulates at the bottom of the pane.
There are two gray water tanks - one for the shower / bathroom sink, and one for the kitchen sink. The gray water for the shower / bathroom sink is on the same waste pipe outlet as the black water, but the second one for the kitchen sink has it's own separate waste pipe outlet, so you might consider getting a "Y" connector and a couple extra short lengths of sewer hose unless you like having to manually move one hose back and forth between waste pipe outlets. In my experience, gray water tanks fill up quickly when you're just rinsing dishes or washing hands or heaven forbid, showering.
The waste valve handles are short. If you're tall or not young and flexible, it may be a little cumbersome getting down on your knees to get under the coach and reach them. I installed 9-inch handle extensions so I could reach them easier and am glad I did.
If you use X-Chocks, you'll need to consider this: On the passenger side, there's a plastic fender that interferes with your ability to place the X-Chock correctly. I had to put mine in upside down (with the adjustment nut at the bottom instead of the top) - was a little bit tricky mostly because I am old and stiff. On the driver side (under the slide) you need to install the X-Chock *before* you put out the slide unless you're good at limbo dancing and enjoy crawling under things - same consideration as the passenger side though, as there's also a plastic fender under the slide.
Accessing the water heater bypass valves is a little tricky. You have to go in through the driver side cargo door at the front of the coach, which is much smaller than the passenger side cargo area door. You also have to unscrew several screws and remove the wooden enclosure to access the back of the water heater where the bypass valves are located. Tricky if you're too big to jam yourself into that small cargo compartment, but you could just feel around for the valve (it's a simple bypass valve that was easy to open and close).
The In-Command system is mostly great. If you have the system with the GlobalConnect feature (e.g. access from anywhere with an internet connection) you'll need at least 8Mbps - 12Mbps to maintain a steady, reliable connection (learned this from the In-Command tech support person I spoke to after having issues with this). Also, be sure that your date and time is set correctly or the GlobalConnect system may not be available and you may have connectivity issues. Oh yeah, you'll have to setup an account with GlobalConnect first, but that's a given.
Very little storage in the bedroom. The wardrobes on either side of the bed are short and the driver side is more shallow than the passenger side. If you're taller than 4'8" your clothes will not hang nicely in either wardrobe. The cubbies on either side are small and deep, so we got little baskets to put stuff in to make it easier to get stuff out.
The bed is nice but be advised it is not a true king size bed - it is 70" x 80" (RV King), so finding linens might be a little tricky. Also, you have to climb in from the foot of the bed, it's not a walk around.
These vortex vents for the fan / air conditioning aren't all they're cracked up to be, at least not yet as we haven't been out in warm enough weather to use the A/C (to be fair). Running the fan on high and it doesn't seem like there's much air coming out of these vents - they're adjustable (you can turn them to adjust the flow) but even that doesn't seem to make much of a difference, at least just using the fan.
Some of our favorite features are the electric fireplace (very nice ambience, also a small 5000 BTU heater to take the chill off), the recliners with heat and massage, the bigger bed, the deep dual kitchen sinks, the inverted outlets, the under-counter area for a little trash can, the 12-volt refrigerator, and the flooring that is durable and looks nice.
Overall very pleased with this travel trailer.

I guess in thinking about what you said about the dinette not being hard enough to put an outdoor kitchen, I guess that is correct the other similar models that I was thinking about all had a rear bath so they had room under the bathroom sink to put the outdoor kitchen. While I like the design of this to some degree, having that large U-shaped dinette really does illuminate a lot of storage space and makes it impossible to have that outdoor kitchen that I think most campers would want. I guess I will have to keep looking at some different under 30 foot designs. We really do love the rear bath the most. Another thing about this one that I was kind of unhappy with was that it almost looks like you have to climb over the toilet to get into the shower. I appreciate the fact that I had a nice rectangular shower but not the greatest toilet positioning. I guess I need to become a multi millionaire to have one custom-made to the specifications I want lol keep up the great videos Josh we find your information so incredibly helpful and I’m glad you will be staying on now that you are part of the Bush family.

I guess some people need the king sized mattress, but I would much rather have a queen and more room around the edges. Also, there's very very little usable bedroom storage. The free floating table is so handy to slide into kitchen space for additional meal prep or in front of the theater seats. We upgraded the mattress and changed the size to 66”x80” and it gave us just the right amount of space. We have the second AC and have used it in temps over 95 degrees. The big glass in front and second AC makes it tongue heavy at 1200 lbs tongue weight with 30 lbs propane tanks and one battery. We tow with a F150 4x4 V8 and it handles it fine but we feel trucks and wind.

What sold us was the extra height with the domed ceiling (don't feel like the ceiling was right on top of you), the openness of the floor plan, and the king size bed! 80% of this trailer is great, then you have to walk through the bathroom to get to the bedroom. Hate the thought of making my wife walk through the cloud of my morning deposit to get to breakfast.
If the bathroom was it’s own cube, I would order one of these.

We happily discovered this online this past summer snd is our absolute FAVORITE! We’ve been waiting for you to get it!
The floor plan and weight and length are just unbeatable.
We do prefer the color palette in the 2021, however.
In conjunction with the 2021 light, white and grey colors, the fridge in the 2021 has those nice panels on the front that match the pantry, and it just makes a really pleasing smooth flow, making it look larger, rather than the stainless fridge next to the nice pantry, more choppy in this 2022.
So glad you got one in!! We have been hoping for you to!!

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  2 года назад +1

By color palette do you mean the all-brown interior? In 2021 they swapped to the same look you see here though I think there were a VVEERRYY small number of super early 2021's that still had the all brown inside. Not trying to be difficult -- simply making sure I'm on the same page. I noticed you said "White and Grey" though. Sometimes the camera sees colors differently depending on lighting conditions. I've noticed my camera will shift the view on cougar seating from brown to grey sometimes.
The 2-Way fridge still has those wood-matching panels. The 12v fridge is just all stainless. Perhaps that's the difference there.

@@JoshtheRVNerd No worries at all!! I am not sure I understood all that, but we discovered online earlier this year, the 2021 version and absolutely LOVE IT! The video we saw was pretty much same lay out you showed for 2022 (thankfully!), just grey and sort of a light white, where now it’s tan and brown (not my favorite, but doable!) Then also the fridge difference, which I did understand your explanation on.
We’ve been waiting for y’all to get the 2022. Really glad they kept the awesome layout. And we can live with the color. Just 2021 is our favorite. I hope this made sense! Sorry!

I really like this layout! The farmhouse interior brightens up the whole in space, as well as as the myriad of windows. I am a fan of the theater seats and this is the first trailer that the dinette placent doesn't bother me! It doesn't seem in the way. Second door road mode bathroom access is great! I would prefer a queen bed but maybe that could be adapted? The only shortage I see is kitchen cabinet space. Love the tootsie toaster but cabinet storage would be appreciated. But I am also the one who is frequently cold so it is a real dilemma for me! I like to cook and I fear I would run out of space for my kitchen essentials....may have to use the under the dinette space. Thanks Josh! Another great unit!

And in the morning when she wants to get up early, which she usually does, she can get up, close the inner door or outer door and not disturb me and the little dogs....thus the king size bed! With the pass through bathroom, you get a lot of bathroom space for this size of trailer.

200 watt with battery maintainer is good and a 100Ah LiPO4 battery works good and will even keep the Norcold DC refrigerator freezer going. 400w with 2000w inverter would allow some 110v use but would need more batteries for extended dry camp use or boondocking. 600w with 540Ah of reserve in battery with about 3-4500watts of inverter would allow even one A/C to run some hours of the day with a single soft start. Lots of opportunities for full use at the 600w package.

Fireplaces are a waste in my opinion more counter and storage space would be much more appreciated 3.) A flip up counter extension beside sink would be great. 4.) An upper corner cabinet in kitchen instead of dead/hard to reach space in back of cabinet.
The only big complaint I have is the so called "king" bed. King beds are 76 x 80 NOT 70x80 if you ever want to replace the mattress your choices are very limited. And sheets this size are hard to find too!! Just stick with a queen bed and offer more storage on the sides of the bed with drawers and cubbies like the Imagine XLS 23LDE.

Having owned this unit for almost two years and having owned custom race car trailers and high end toy haulers and motorhomes, here are my thoughts (and wishlist for this Cougar):
    * round off the base of the bedroom wardrobe cabinets on each side of the bed (they are very square and very sharp and very close to your face while laying in bed. They can cut your face. Don't ask me how I know this.)
    * put the little shocks on cabinet doors. Holding the cabinet door on your head while you load the cabinets takes special skills.
    * adding a small wardrobe slide would make this floorplan nearly perfect (big wish.)
    * discontinue the pull-down optional shades for the door windows. They warp in the California sun and fall out, and the z-folds never fold correctly. Burn them in the campfire as soon as you can. A dark roll of fabric cut to window size with velcro attachment is simple and foolproof.
    * make every outlet inverter wired. Why only do some?
    * put cabinet door(s) on base of bedframe.
    * put stiffer shocks on bed when you raise it up from the base.
    * put exterior door at back of trailer to access underneath dinette base (big wish.)
    * route cables better where they enter the slide (they can pinch the way it is currently designed.)
    * extend propane hose where it routes from the tanks to the front of the trailer body. Mine is so short, it crosses over the battery tray and isn't even long enough to route it underneath the battery tray, hindering battery placement. It has zero extra length.
    * weld a small bracket to the tongue where a bicycle or generator can be chained up. I believe Outdoors RV does this on their trailers.
    * Lippert really needs to redesign the front of the frame where the coupler is welded. The two frame tubes come together just underneath where the ball couples to the trailer. During sharp turns the hitch hits the front frame tubes and damages them. If Lippert rounded off these tubes just a bit, there would be enough clearance so that contact would not be made. It looks sort of ghetto to have your trailer tongue bent from normal turns.
    * should come with Dexter, Mor-Ryde, or Road Armor equalizer upgrade as stock and wet-bolts/brass bushings. I installed the Dexter EZ Flex on mine for under $400 and it's night and day difference in towing - the difference between riding a hard-tail Harley vs a Road Glide. It's the single biggest improvement for towing quality. Keystone could do this at the factory for probably $200 cost. If Keystone considers this one of their premier trailers, it shouldn't be riding on a stock equalizer with plastic bushings.
Overall, I still like this design as well as anything on the market.

Feedback like this from real owners is hands-down the most valuable. TY so much for taking the time to share all this!!

      @teamharveymotorsports5436 Год назад

@@JoshtheRVNerd thanks. Since you indicate Keystone heeds your advice sometimes, I figured you could pass this on. Most are little improvements they could make, but I would say the frame/tongue design is an issue. I can't be the only one where the front tongue frame tubes make contact with towing hitches. Lippert needs to extend the coupler out a few inches. Simple fix for them but hard for us as consumers after it's welded.
I would also list the equalizer upgrade as a must from the factory. This model isn't a Springdale or whatever other entry level unit Keystone makes. I think Keystone has the margins to throw in this upgrade from the factory if they consider this their premier category of trailer. It is the single biggest upgrade for the towing consumer - from hours of harsh towing to a soft, floating type of pull. Many consumers won't have the capability to do it at home, so they will never know how harshly these pull with the stock/cheap equalizer.

We typically hang out in their trailer when we camp with them. What is your process with people out of state that want to purchase from you?

11:43 I like them as 1) they reduce wasted hallway space, & 2) create nice separation of the bedroom from the kitchen/living areas (especially if there are guests sleeping over; even more so if there’s a half bath they can use 😉 or they can use the cat hole you dig near the sewer dumps outside 😏) 😛😝😜🤪 + 3) great for travel access when a 2nd entrance is added in the bedroom (better than in the bathroom 🚽🚿)

Nice to see that they have 110v outlets connected to an inverter. I modified my class A with an automatic transfer switch that switches all the 110v outlets to a 3,000 watt inverter when you turn it on. We like to camp at state and county parks that often don't have hookups. It's nice to be able to microwave a cup of coffee in the morning without running the generator and annoying the neighbors. Not a big deal if you mainly stay at parks with hookups, but super convenient if you don't.

I like that, lots of counter space and the second door is a big plus. Since there would only be one or two people using this 95% of the time the walkthrough bathroom isn't an issue. Plenty of room for daytime guests and rainy days, I would probably go with a bigger solar package and a second air for those hot steamy days. I actually like this more than the fifth wheel for the travel mode access.

I own this model (2021). We added 3 more solar panels, a Victron MPPT solar charge controller, and a 100 amp hour lithium battery. Super happy with it. On 100+ degree days, we wouldn't mind the second AC but the single does a really good job on its own.

Love all the windows and the huge dinette! and the rectangular shower is to die for. and the recliners! The huge front window over the bed is awesome and the second entrance solves the road mode access problem I have with my current trailer. Pretty much checks all the boxes for me. one problem I see would be the kitchen prep space under the tv. what happens when someone is working there and you are trying to watch the tv from the recliner? move to the dinette and turn the tv ?

Really like the execution in the living and kitchen area. Not a bug fan of a walk through bathroom but "it is what it is" and it gives good space. The only real shortcoming inside is the lack of closet space. TV position in the bedroom is not good.
Always trade offs in a shorter camper but I would rather have them in the bedroom than in the living area where you actually spend time.
