      DIY Paint has nine non chemical ingredients, it’s clay based. No off gassing & likely the cleanest paint on the market. There is more harm in the latex in gloves. I never wear gloves when I paint & I paint inside without concern 💕

    as a profesional upholsterer i aporove this technique!just a piece of advice though start with a small surface (under the pillow for example) and see the full effect before apply it to the whole sofa because you dont know how the paint will react with differente types of fabrics.

    major tip : brush the paint in with a cat hair brush as you go; the paint brush in one hand and the cat brush in the other. This will work the paint in better and deter the paint from concentrating in areas. Also it will help the upholstery to dry fluffy rather than crusty.

    Three years ago, this past Spring I watched your 1st video on how you painted your couch hot pink. Inspired, I painted my couch and matching chair, a shabby chic pale blue. It's been three years, three kids, the hubby, and our German Shepherd ...and the couch/chair are still holding its color. They are easy to clean with just warm soapy water. I get so many compliments, the most recent was from one of my customers 2 weeks ago. She came to purchase refinished painted furniture from me. Ooing and awwing over my shabby chic style. She asked me if she could rent my furniture and decor for her daughter's shabby chic birthday party. Wow! I thought. What a compliment. So it's been three years since you inspired me with that project. Many times in my head I have thanked you, but now, "Thank You Debi! Your ideas and inspirations changes lives and hearts! I know this, because it changed our home and all who enter in." :)

I'm ordering a 32oz of the black velvet paint and an 8oz tub of the Crystal Clear Chandelier Liquid Patina. Does that sound right? You mentioned sanding in between dried layers - is that different than using the sanding sponge? If so, what grade paper or steel wool do I use. I'm excited to do this and will gladly share results.

    One little tip , since the paint was dilute , you could have used a spray bottle as an applicator , and a new scrub brush (like a shoe polishing brush) to work the paint into the fabric. But nice vid and couch , love the colour!

  • @reigna963
    @reigna963 8 лет назад +16

    I have painted a sofa and chairs before watching any vids. I soon found the crackling and did not know there were any vids so I just started adding water and ironing the couch.....LOL, intuitively. It turned out nicely and I actually sold it. I am in the process of making my own chalk paint and will follow your instructions here. One question, do you rewet the fabric after painting when applying more paint? Thank you for this vid...really gorgeous couch you have there.

    • @vegasjill21
      @vegasjill21 7 лет назад +2

      Hi rei ~ I WISH I had found this gal's video before I listened to too many other people with upholstery chalk painting videos!! UGG!! Mine turned out just like Debi warned...too thick of chalk paint and now it is hard and crunchy! Glad you have some better intuition than I do and was able to correct your misguided painting instructions before you ruined the whole project!!!
      Now I have to figure out how to soften the chunky dried paint before I try to finish painting!! Sanding block or soft wire brush, I guess.. And I'd like to know if the fabric needs to be re-wet before starting that second coat, also! But I would think yes.
      Take care. :)

    • @reigna963
      @reigna963 7 лет назад

      Yes that's your intuitive self talking and i would also wet and iron...that's what worked for me...do not give up...you'll see, basically you're wearing it down.

      @vegasjill21 7 лет назад +2

      rei Hi rei! Thanks alot ...yes I finally brushed it down and it is much softer, thank goodness. lol But it came out looking pretty nice. :)

    • @DebisDesignDiary
      @DebisDesignDiary  7 лет назад +12

      Rel, good call! Yes I wet it down every time and worked the paint into the fiber of the fabric so it acts like a dye rather than a paint, you don't want the paint to sit on top of the surface, if it does it changes the texture to a slick or rough surface that will crack and not feel like the original fabric.

    Interesting. The "miracles" that can be done with the right knowledge and the right tools are fascinating. I have a Ducaroy Sofa from Manhattan Home Design in a pristine white boucle fabric finish, but if I get bored of white in a few years and decide to change it to an accent color, this technique will probably help me a lot. Thanks for the tutorial.

  • @chiloveradiouncut

    Hello everyone. If you want the sofa to be a certain color you have to remember the underlying tone in this case gold...the color of the paint was teal which is a shade of blue green. What happens when you mix blue and gold...you get green. That's why the sofa didn't turn out the same color as the paint.

    • @bgs03548
      @bgs03548 2 года назад

      Not sure colors blend like that when one color is dyed and already dry. Colors can blend and change when both are the same medium. You can’t paint a black car white and get a grey car.

      That really depends on where you are and how long it stays wet. If it's getting soaked, yeah, but if it's hot and not humid, it'll dry really quick and it won't have time to mold. This is definitely a dead of summer type project, when it'll get sapped of all moisture quickly.

    • @pamh.5705
