  • The 2020 BMW S1000RR is what happens when government regulations ruin what is otherwise a good motorcycle. If you’ve been paying attention to the S 1000 RR (Yes, that’s its technical name, with spaces between letters and numbers. I’m scrunching them all together from here on out.), you’re already aware it’s been available in Europe for some time as a 2019 model year - and the reviews are raving. But now it’s slowly trickling into US dealers as a 2020 model, and this review won’t be quite as amazing - and it’s not entirely BMW’s fault. I wasn’t sure why there was a discrepancy, but after talking with some other journos who have ridden the European version, I think I know why.

      @iron The problem is the US version's ECU set up. There is a loss of over 40 HP ( yes I know that sounds incredible, 40 fucking HP !) in the mid range when compared with the Euro version. I own a 2011 gen 1 and recently got a 2020 M pac. I'm in England so I don't have to tolerate the emasculated US version. PS I think your comment was bollocks :D Or u have been looking at the wrong revues while wearing a MAGA hat :)

    The original S1000RR headlights made the motorcycle unique. It was ugly, but nothing else looked like it. Now, you might as well put a Ducati or Honda badge on it and it will seem right. I am surprised that US noise standards are more stringent than E.U. Does the new bike come with a steering damper? That head shake looked scary. BMW America should have given you an Euro spec bikes for track session.

      It's not EPA it's CARB which is even more restrictive than Euro 4, due to logistics all new bikes are CARB certified even in non-CARB states.

    Rarely do I thumbs down a video but this one definitely deserves it. The pricing info given was completely wrong. The ride mode pro package is $1,600 (included in the race package), not $3,700. $3,700 is the cost for the M package which includes the ride mode pro package. Also, A loaded S1000RR with the M and Select packages is just over 22k, not 25k.
    I hadn't heard about issues with the US tunes so I'll give credit for that but overall the video felt pretty amateurish. The host was unsure of his facts and stumbled over the technical details. I'd expect better from an actual magazine.

    I have the 2020 RR and it is an amazing bike. However, he is absolutely correct about the US tune having little power particularly in gears 2 and 3 below around 8500 RPM. The decoded ECU map shows that the max throttle is capped at 40% of wide open regardless of input in these gears and engine speeds. You feel it, even in the restricted break-in period. You start rolling on the throttle where everything feels normal/great and then, well, nothing, regardless of how much more you twist.
    My guess is that BMW underestimated the challenge in making the US version comply with EPA noise restrictions and were faced with the prospect of a major last-minute hardware/muffler change, or tweaking the ECU software to severely limit maximum throttle and exhaust value opening to game the EPA test. They chose the latter.
    The good news is that there is a fix: flash the ECU via one of the tuners. Depending upon the type of tune, it will cost you between $400 and $1000, where the former gets you the EU tune. I got the Brentuning handheld flasher, which not only eliminates the need to send in the ECU, but also can revert the ECU to stock settings before taking it into BMW in case you worry about warranty coverage.
    With the tune, the bike delivers all that was promised and more. Without, you have a bit of a crippled superbike and are less than fully satisfied.

    • @calijudoable
      @calijudoable 4 года назад

      Nice, how do you like the tune? Did you get the m+ tune? I just ordered the handheld with the m+.

    • @bernhtp
      @bernhtp 4 года назад

      @@calijudoable Yes, I got the ///M+. It's still great after 9K miles and 11 months. I didn't see value in the Stage 2 features, so I stuck with the ///M+. I hate loud, so I keep the stock exhaust. The higher redline sounded possibly dangerous (to warranty), the faster quick shift seems potentially destabilizing, I don't use MR12 or other super-octane fuels and I don't drag race. I had a great track day at COTA two days ago.

    Great Review Troy, was very informative. Thank you. I had heard that the US 2020 S1000RR’s had this emissions issue that chokes the engine below ~8000RPM. The cure of course is to get an unrestricted ECU flash, however with BMW, they call it an unlock code, which is another purchase from them and it then automatically voids your warranty. I own a S1000RR and In the past it was really difficult to flash the ECU with a 3rd party program because of BMW’s outrageous security protocols that made you have to match the flash with the bikes VIN#. Maybe third party programmers have been able to get around this now, I hope so.
    The other issue is the Hayes brakes and Nissin master cylinder. Who wants Harley brakes on a 25K Superbike? Hayes are the major brake supplier to Harley! On the M package version especially there is NO excuse for not having some sort of mid spec Brembo calipers and a Brembo master cylinder. The Nissin master cylinder has always been a poor performer compared to a Brembo unit. It also suffers from increasing lever gap with age where part of the lever pull range does nothing and then starts engaging the brakes, mine had ~1/2 to 3/4 inch when I changed to a Brembo master cylinder and was much happier.
    For me I wouldn’t buy this bike, BMW May have change many things, however I’m NOT spending 25K for a choked engine and Harley Brakes.
    In this price category, Aprillia & Ducati have REAL Superbike options!

    • @TroySiahaan
      @TroySiahaan 5 лет назад

      I haven't seen it for myself, but I'm hearing from a few different sources that tuners have already developed a re-flash for the US S1000RR. So that's promising.
      As for the brakes, top-shelf Brembo stuff is awesome, but Hayes and Nissin aren't necessarily inferior (I've used some good stuff from both companies before). Don't forget that Brembo has also supplied brake components to Harley as well. Something I find a little confusing is the 320mm discs on the BMW. Its competitors are running 330mm discs now.
      But I get where you're coming from. If you're forking over that kind of cash, you don't want any compromises.

    I thought the detuning for noise and emissions was the rule for all bikes here in the USA. My CBR 954 certainly had a flat spot in the 5000-6000 RPM range, which I understand was designed for 65 MPH cruising in 6th gear. A Power Commander re-map fixed that quite nicely.

    Test rode the M model both on track and the road on winding ones, European. Great as a road bike for this category think is the best as it is comfy just put a cushy seat. Very easy to handle very easy to go quick flicks great only with bar input. DDC adequate for roads. For track I had issues hearing down shifts from high speeds as it is sooo quiet. And agree with opinion here, as I had my Tuono factory with ohlins for back to back and can say the RR has slight less feel on the front but not that is not as effective, just not that transparent which can give impression of not being so precise, nothing you cannot adjust to. Other than that, for the normal rider is way far beyond skills and it’s main advantage is being the best for the road. Now, we have a 10yr old upgraded RSV winning and a new R1M with price of a Panigale S! Coming.....

    Weight is so underrated in my opinion when developing cars and motorcycles. Weight savings helps with braking, acceleration and handling exponentially.

    The Us model throttle got heavily restricted the ride by wire only gives you 40% throttle from 1,000-8,000rpms after that it gives you full power. I think they did this for euro4 emissions idk.

      Taijean Moodie I dont blame BMW for doing that considering how theres no restrictions on CCs or HP in their license, a guy with a learner’s permit can ride this bike “legally”. The torque is gonna throw beginners off

      @@Zedexization i know what you mean a 600cc supersport is actually safer than a fz09 or fz07 its the torque thats dangerous not the hp and this 1000cc bmw has BOTH

    Just going to say no.to this one. Powerband flatspots, engine vibrations, OK brakes and suspension for %23,000 does not sound like a great deal to me. Way too many good bikes out there for less $$$$.

    Neither our bikes nor our cars give 100% in the US. Your streets, your tracks, your fuel e.g. are not suitable for top notch performance. We give you like 80% of everything, and that is ok.
    RS4V 1100 factory, Panigale V4, S1000RR ... all with U.S. detunes.

    When I rode my brothers 2020 I was shocked. 2nd and 3rd down low feels like you’re riding a 400. 4th gear 4-8 pulls harder than 2nd or 3rd at the same revs. My 2016 smokes it no problem it’s actually embarrassing

    BMW PUT A DUMB ASS FLAT SPOT UP TO 8000 RPMS THAT SUCKS BIG TIME. YOU'LL HAVE TO SPEND 700.00 TO FIX IT.
    WITH THE M PACKAGE ADD $4000.00 YOU CAN'T CHANGE SETTING WHILE DRIVING , YOU'LL NEED TO STOP COMPLETELY .
    1800.00 FOR A COMPLETE EXHAUST.
    YOU'LL SPEND 22,500.00 BEFORE TAXES. WHY DOEAN'T OTHER BIKES HAVE THE FLAT SPOT FOR THE US MARKET ?

    Blame CARB tuning, it's even more restrictive than Euro 4, and for logistical reasons all new U.S. bikes are CARB certified.. Reviewing any modern liter bike in stock U.S. config is almost pointless because it's so chocked up and no one that buys one is going to leave it stock anyway.

    Complete BS excuse for a terribly tuned 1st generation bike that was rushed through production w/out quality assurance and out to the dealerships.

  • @Kurlach

    I just find it odd that most of the points you make about handling, braking etc haven’t been made on any other review I’ve read or watched. And you’re not paying thousands for a mode - you’re paying for the M Sport which has that mode included; you conveniently forgot to mention the carbon wheels, lithium battery, paint scheme etc.
    I appreciate everyone is entitled to their opinion, but as an owner I think you’re forgetting that most of these will be ridden on the road and tbh it’s fucking amazing. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Ive not ridden this bike the dealer sold the first one they got right away. The 1100 Factory on the other hand was freshhhhh off the truck when i rolled up. I was literally the first to ride it sans the tech to make sure it was sound. Let me say i was blown away and this is coming from just riding there in my 18 RF! There is a freeway turn i cant get past 150 on my RF at full throttle or the front end comes up and i hate that! The 1100 did that shit pinned at 170!!! Ran out of corner. Needless to say its a far better bike than my RF. Its brakes are better, the positioning is better, the power is ughhhh. And ive done upgrades to mine such as the RaceECU+MotoGP SC Project pipe, ceramic bearings and some carbon fiber to lighten the load but its NOOTHING. I want it. Haha
