when it comes to heated grips on BMW’s the “Hi” setting is intended to get the grips up to temp quickly. The grips will get too hot unless you have thick gloves on. “Lo” is the normal operating setting.
The hole, or flat spot you speak of is in the ecu only in north American models. A simple flash unrestricts it and becomes a monster in the whole rpm range.
Considering they're the same class and engine type, they'd likely be super close or the same result as the Ducati versus GSXR video. Ari put some serious work into Dave and at that particular track it can probably beat or equal all stock-suspension street bikes.
I’ve had a couple of off-track excursions at track school on their S1000rr and found it handles surprisingly well, although I did not try it out on any RR ties :). I owned two of the earlier versions and purchased the 2021 model based largely on how much I love riding the school’s (CSS) bikes on track. The M package with carbon wheels DOES turn in noticeably better (lighter touch on turning in) even though the overall static weight savings is not substantial because the wheel hub and brake rotors are upgraded (rotors 50% thicker) for both the carbon wheel and forged wheel options. The passenger seat and pegs are a no cost option, as is the solid rear cowl. You can also effectively change the settings for street use by dedicating one of the three Race Pro configurations, and you can alter the way the hill hold feature kicks in. I’m tremendously impressed with the level of thought and design that have gone into this new generation of the S1000rr, and it’s reflected in the fact that BMW warrantees this 14,000-plus rev monster for three years.
The Shiftcam sounds like Honda's old VTEC. The power from the low rpm lobe falls off then it changes to the high rpm lobe. What some people did back in the day is use a VAFC to change the VTEC activation point to smooth out the power band a bit.
Thanks for posting. Couple of points. There was a massive recall on the front brakes of the s1krr. Far as I know, all the Hayes calipers are to be replaced with the Nissin calipers. Regarding the flat spot. It is due to EPA regulations. The Euro version does not have the flat spot.

For an older bike would you consider jumping on a 1st gen carbureted sv650 or maybe the 2nd gen? I have a good idea of the things you might say... I just really want to hear it out loud! 3rd gen is maybe a bit boring because there are more exciting contemporary bikes, but in the context of the late 90's/early 2000's the SV just destroyed the competition.
when you buy a harley you make a conscious choice for style over performance, and even comfort if you mod the hell out of it. with a super sport you buy it knowing its not comfy and it demands dedication to condition to the extra effort it requires to ride. you do that for 2 things; performance and the insight into how well you ride - no other road going bike lets you know your riding sucks as much as a super sport. but 1 day if you put the effort in you'll be proud and it'll show. comfort on a super sport isn't something to dismiss but comfort is part of the right of passage to its dedication. plenty of other bikes out there that are quick in a straight line that aren't super sports. get a super sport and be 1 of the few still riding them 😎
All things considered. A budget version of the S1000 would be a smart move for BMW. Kind of like the R nine T pure. Just a true daily rider with a superbike heart.
Absolutely brilliant video. Your road review is exactly what I wanted to view. Is heat an issue with the S1000RR? A bit about me: Had a Panigale 959 and Monster 1200R simultaneously. Traded the Pani for a Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak. However, I miss the Panigale. Thinking of trading the Monster 1200R for a sportbike while keeping the Multi. Seams like the S1000RR is a more suitable choice for predominantly street riding than a Pani V4S and better values as well. Your opinion?
BMW had problems with the Hayes brakes which effected many of their models. One of the fixes were to replace the Hayes with Brembo brakes. I'm surprised that that 2020 was not replaced with them. I have a 2020 XR with that came with the Brembos.
My son loves motorcycles but won't ride his own. He states that if he rides, he would get something like a BMW S 1000RR and wouldn't have self control. He would only want to go fast and wouldn't have the self discipline to ride safely. I get where he is coming from, the speed of sport bikes is addictive. Man has to know his limitations. The model you are riding has the Nissin calipers for sure. The Hayes caliper models have a bar within the bmw logo on the calipers. Mines a 21 w/ Nissin calipers and look just like the ones on this bike
Honestly, $22k doesn't seem bad at all for what you're getting. Although, with current prices, FULLY decked out you're talking $29.5k (M package with carbon wheels option, Premium package with up-spec exhaust option, Carbon and Billet packages). A more reasonable setup would be just the M and Premium, for $23.5k. You really want the premium because it gives you the heated grips, ride modes, cruise control, and dynamic suspenders. Personally, I MUCH prefer the red color over the white. So my ideal setup would cost slightly less with just the Premium $21.3. Or I could add in the carbon and billet packages and then be around the same price $23.8. 5:56 In addition to the high, there's also a low seat option.
When I was bike commuting, I had a beemer (badass K1300S) that I could do about 2 round trips per tank, same time I also had a Ducati that could do less than one full trip (hypermotard on 120 mile commute). So annoying to have to stop for gas EVERY trip to work. 150 miles range would annoy me if daily commuting.
They've apparently got the deadspot only on the American bikes, for emissions or something, but most people will get these gen4 bikes tuned and it fixes it well
This is probably the smoothest brand of bikes there is. When you see him, take his hands off the handlebars you can do that at 100+ and it is the same.
When I've daily ridden "race bikes", or anything with an aggressive seating position, I love the air hitting my upper body, it takes the weight off my wrists. That balance is really important to fight fatigue, some bikes get it right, I've yet to right this bike, but it seems like a real dual purpose machine. I'd probably look at one of these long before I went to the $30k CBR R-RRRRRR...SP, and smile about the $8-9k savings, but it doesn't have that Honda RAWR!! up in the rev range, that's got to be an addiction quality noise that justifies a few of those saved $k.

Firstly its obious where his passion is road and bikewise. Adventure bikes and dusty/dirty roads. He doesnt have a clue for longer rides with that bike. Im taller than him and can easily go 400 mile trips with mine. That bike is comfiest superbikes, ergos are great. Range is around 300kms with full tank.

I got a tuono 660 at the end of December and one selling point is the nearly 100 horsepower at like 403 pounds. (183kg I guess). This bmw is 205 horsepower at 437 lbs? So for roughly 30 lbs you get another 108 HP. You pay 2x what the tuono costs, but 2x the power at nearly the same weight. I have never felt that I can’t responsibly handle any bike. But I can say the tuono feels like a bmx bike almost, but bolted to the road with a rocket between your legs if you ask for it. It’s incredibly easy to ride. I won’t be able to buy a 22k$ bike, but I sure wish I could give it a good hour long ride just once lol!
If anyone recalls the Mozart biopic “Amadeus” they might recognise the same demented laugh Tom Hulce gives as Mozart as Zack also does while pulling a wheelie or similar stunt. The comparison fits as both Mozart and Zack brilliant Mavericks with humour, skill and talent. This has got to be the only off-road review of an S1000….! the power gap is a US emissions thing. there are times readily available that will remove it. in other markets the power gap is nowhere near the level of the US (EU, AU)
Small correction: These Brake Calipers are actually the Nissin ones wich were fittet on later bike. I believe they started to equip them from the factory line in the middle of 2021. The flat spot in the torque delivery is purely done electronically as it not aparent on euopean bikes. Greetings from Berlin, Ben
Those are the Nissin calipers. The Hayes calipers have the high-lighted BMW logo surrounded by a large rectangle that is the same height as the BMW lettering.
So, I'm currently riding a 2022 cb300r with like, 30 hp. This bike has 175 hp more. I'm currently having the time of my fucking life riding this thing, sure it isnt the fastest thing on the street, but fuck its not slow, and it has a habit of lifting the front wheel quite frequently. Looking at a bike like, this, that makes 175 hp less, this leaves me with the question, WHY? DEAR FUCK WHY? I mean the answer is ofc, "why not?" but I'm gonna be real, thats still fucking insane.

Even tho my daily rider is a cruiser, I still like sport bikes. If given the opportunity, I’d take a naked sport over the fairings.
European autos/motorcycles are cutting edge tech with all the luxuries from the factory. One stop shopping. Not too many aftermarket products needed especially horsepower. Harley you must buy the extra horsepower that should come out of the factory standard, Stage 2-4.
Regarding your mirror comment, I find it is best to look over your shoulder every time you change lane, it's the life saver move. Even if you are sure there is nothing there, Look.

only thing is that it makes letting out the clutch feel a bit funny. you feel like maybe you have to give it a bit more power as the bike tries to push passed the hill hold. I just always manually deactivate mine
Good job Zach riding in the puddle. Imagine growing up riding CG 125 in the puddle with a passenger in the back + 220 lbs dry weight + fuel weight, albeit with better tires lol. That was my daily ride for a long time in different country lol. Focus should be to keep bike as vertical as possible.

That’s my bike! I love it. It’s a track weapon for sure and super comfortable. I did the Bren Tuning to smooth out the flat spot.

Agreed, I like that idea. They are hard to find in stock (or even close) condition, but if I can find one I'd love to do that.
Zack, you make the point, this is where the extremes are (tech, speed, ergo’s) this is what currently represents a race bike that is street legal.
i think that gap in power was a way to satisfy euro emissions requirements. I think you can do a flash/tune to get rid of that gap if desired.
Suzuki's new GSX S1000gt would be an excellent next bike to throw up on the board to compare a legit sport-tourer to the sport-y ADV segment.

The calipers do seem to be the new Nissin calipers that get installed due to the recall. The Hayes calipers look a bit different.

I had a K1300S too. It was the perfect long range commuter.

Small correction: These Brake Calipers are actually the Nissin ones wich were fittet on later bike. I believe they started to equip them from the factory line in the middle of 2021. The flat spot in the torque delivery is purely done electronically as it not aparent on euopean bikes. Greetings from Berlin, Ben
Those are the Nissin calipers. The Hayes calipers have the high-lighted BMW logo surrounded by a large rectangle that is the same height as the BMW lettering.

Superbikes are the best daily riders IMO. They get the adrenaline pumping in a short time and you don’t have to be on them for long.
So, I'm currently riding a 2022 cb300r with like, 30 hp. This bike has 175 hp more. I'm currently having the time of my fucking life riding this thing, sure it isnt the fastest thing on the street, but fuck its not slow, and it has a habit of lifting the front wheel quite frequently. Looking at a bike like, this, that makes 175 hp less, this leaves me with the question, WHY? DEAR FUCK WHY? I mean the answer is ofc, "why not?" but I'm gonna be real, thats still fucking insane.

They based the engine on the K5. Suzuki still sells a liter K5 derived bike.

Even tho my daily rider is a cruiser, I still like sport bikes. If given the opportunity, I’d take a naked sport over the fairings.
Talented not to crash the s1000 rr in the mud on those tyres. Pure skill.
European autos/motorcycles are cutting edge tech with all the luxuries from the factory. One stop shopping. Not too many aftermarket products needed especially horsepower. Harley you must buy the extra horsepower that should come out of the factory standard, Stage 2-4.
Regarding your mirror comment, I find it is best to look over your shoulder every time you change lane, it's the life saver move. Even if you are sure there is nothing there, Look.

only thing is that it makes letting out the clutch feel a bit funny. you feel like maybe you have to give it a bit more power as the bike tries to push passed the hill hold. I just always manually deactivate mine

I have had all 3 and RR is most fun by far. One of the comfiest suberbikes you would ever ride in anywhere.
Good job Zach riding in the puddle. Imagine growing up riding CG 125 in the puddle with a passenger in the back + 220 lbs dry weight + fuel weight, albeit with better tires lol. That was my daily ride for a long time in different country lol. Focus should be to keep bike as vertical as possible.
