Unlike today, that was so true , i.e., being Gay was considered a mental illness. I remember. I'm now 74 and when I was in my teens, 20s, etc., that "stigma" exacerbated my not coming out publicly, and we Gays were forced to live a double life.....for mere survival! Being Gay instead of straight is no more of an illness than being left handed instead of right handed! I missed out on so much in my younger years! To all the young Gays out there: Don't be afraid! Say and tell what you feel. And regarding the dating scene, better to get a "no" answer (rejection) than to keep quiet and years later say, "I would've, could've, should've, but didn't". That "what if" will haunt you the rest of your life like it did to me.
