  • Here's a few tips on how to achieve nice paint lines when painting walls after the trimwork. These methods will work for painting accent wall lines, and even ceiling lines.
    The situation on this job:
    These baseboards had been removed and re-installed after the hardwood floor was installed. So I had masked off the floor and filled the new nail holes, and caulked the baseboards to the wall.
    After that, I taped everything off, sealed the tape, did all other prep on walls and ceiling. The ceiling and some wall area had been re-textured with new texture, so I needed to prime those areas before painting also.
    In that situation there is a lot of roller splatter that is created from rolling the primer & two coats of paint on the ceiling and walls. Thus, taping off the trim has multiple important benefits and creates clean lines and trimwork.
    Of course this video does not cover all of the various steps involved with prepping and painting a living room. Just focusing on the tapelines here.
    Please work safely and use all personal protective equipment such as respirator, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, work boots, etc, when doing remodel or renovation work.
    When painting walls or trim, make sure to ventilate the air out of the room with a fan, or use a respirator to avoid irritating your respiratory system from paint fumes, even though they seem mild.
    XC painter will not be held liable for any actions of any individual or company that is doing construction or renovation work. This video is not a complete tutorial on painting and definitely not on job site safety. Each person she'll be held liable for their own safety, and the safety of others working with them.

    There's lots of different ways to paint especially in different parts of the country and I always enjoy seeing different methods. I've been in the industry 30 years and painting over the tape with your trim paint is a new one to me. Nice tip, thanks for sharing.

    I love the baseboard color paint trick on your tape. I always do something similar with clear caulk but that leaves a slight differwnce in the sheen of the paint. The only time I think the caulk would be a better idea is when I'm covering flooring. I always use the clear caulk trick and my edges come out lazer sharp and clean

    Nice job XC !! You will always have painters who will say I dont need tape , I can cut straight ! Good luck to them trying to make lines that straight ! I use these same methods you do. Once you get fast at taping , you can cut fast which in return speeds up production , yet gives you incredible results !! Keep it up , Im sure your Boss is more than happy with your work . By the way I hope He pays you very well ...

    we always use that method on tape when it is critical that it is straight. FIxing the tape bleeds by basing the tape with trim color is the way to go. I noticed that 18 inch roller and you are using your back to roll the wall and not your arms. Would be good advice to switch back to a 9 inch. you will save your body in the long run.

    Nice tip about using trim paint to seal the tape! Do you leave it to dry completely before put emulsion over ?

    • @XCPainter

      Yes, leave it to dry. It shouldn't take long if it's dry brushed on.

    So good - can you leave the tape on for the trim paint sealing coat and two wall coats without it trying to peel of the paint of the wall? Or do you have to retape after each coat?

    Nice job, do you let the trim paint dry on the masking then coat walls let walls dry then pull tape of or do you do it differently?

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  5 лет назад

      Yes, i typically let the "sealant" trim paint dry, and let the wall paint dry or close to dry before pulling tape. What works best for each person or situation though.

    Also, what mini roller unusing? I have tried using a mini in the past but it didn't work out to well for me.

    What do you think best tip is to put down the tape quick and straight? I always have to readjust tape all the time

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  3 года назад

      Body positioning is a first thing that is crucial to being able to mask things efficiently and straight.
      I pretty much get right down at baseboard level with my eyes to do my work.
      Figuring out which way works if running the roll of tape in one hand, or setting it aside and using two hands to apply.
      I would always try to use continual lengths of tape for baseboards, casing, etc.
      Can use seperate pieces where needed of course.
      I can run blue tape (continual) from the wrist around a whole room if I opted to, or I could just hold the roll by hand and switch positioning as needed.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  3 года назад

      The next tip would be maybe pulling maybe 12" - 18" of tape but only lining up and pressing down 6 to 8 inches at a time as you go (not tearing tape).
      I'd pulling tape roll out, without tearing tape, set roll aside and use two hands to apply if necessary

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  3 года назад

      Make sure to pull it from the roll in a straight fashion from or the center of the tape, or it will stretch the tape and curve it. Sometimes that happens anyways.
      Find a tape that works the best, keeping it's shape without being too frustrating.

    Do you prefer spraying or rolling interior walls?

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  Месяц назад +1

      With a repaint like this, nice and clean and furnished, rolling is preferred for drywall ceilings and walls.
      For New construction, usually spraying is the way to go.

    do you let paint dry before tape removal?

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  3 года назад

      Yes most of the time. On rare occasions I'll pull tape early

    • @ryanconner1538
      @ryanconner1538 3 года назад +1

      Do you pull the tape as soon as it dry? Like couple hours? Just not wet? Or do you wait till next day or longer?

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  3 года назад

      @@ryanconner1538 it all depends on necessity. You have options with blue tape or other low tack tape. It usually doesn't hurt to leave the tape as long as needed. Days, weeks even. (Depending on surface) I've done it.
      I've painted big homes by myself where the timing is stretched way out (working solo). Many, many times I'll tape stuff to paint walls, and it stays for the next phase of the job for specific reasons.

  • @KissDeano

    was this just the standard blue tape also? and i noticed hardwood covered too (sprayed trim)...you left that on for a day or two correct?..usually others pull it off when wet..you left it on..no issues with bleedthrough to hardwood...and time left on?..much appreciated

    • @KissDeano
      @KissDeano 5 лет назад

      and do add...ive been thinking on even doing tape on flat ceiling..using more flat lightly coated, like u did here..to prevent leakage, then painting my wall up to tape..i just dont want tape that's on ceiling to peal off flat white existing paint on ceiling..what would be your procedure to insure great results. thanks in advance!

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  5 лет назад +1

      Hi I used 2090 3m tape. The floors are manufactured hardwood. They are sort of like a veneer or laminate, but I had no problems leaving the tape on for about a week on this project. Each floor has unique finished, especially real hardwood with clear coats applied, use caution. There are more sensitive tapes also, but oddly enough, the adhesive is gummier and can leave residue behind after removing.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  5 лет назад +2

      @@KissDeano The method for good cut lines at tops of walls are to brush ny hand, but your idea can work too. I have done that on rare occasion.

    • @KissDeano
      @KissDeano 5 лет назад

      im just developing a system..and I believe 24-48 hours would be tops (leaving it on) for my use... so nothing but tape against basboard..no silicone or anything?.. and the one on upper part of trim..you waited till it dried?..no urgency like the other guys on YT, that caulk and pull when caulk is wet?.. thanks @@XCPainter

    • @KissDeano

      Do you have any recommendations on how to do a quality exterior touch up?
      This customer had her house painted 4 years ago some paint fading is evident and the touch up is too noticeable. Any recommendations would be very appreciated.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  5 лет назад

      carlos martinez Probably just have to do a bigger section, or paint the whole board corner to corner. If fading is visible then the whole side of the house should be done maybe.
