I just completed a painting project to paint the trip on 10 new Windows, a few old ones, and a couple of sliding doors. This tool was a big help and was your video showing the tips and tricks- truly awesome. Thank you Chris!
Wow this is a great video. I do a lot of my own work around my property and I bought this tool but didn't know how to use it. But when I searched on you tube "how to use a hand masker" I saw your video. Now I can mask like a pro! Well a novice pro. Actually a novice. It's a great video! Thanks Simon!
Love your videos man! I've been painting for years now and most of it I already know but it's nice to go over things again! Always learning something from you! Keep up the great videos!
Thank you for your very informative videos on preparing a worksite before painting. I appreciate how you broke down the process in a very simplified manner. Keep up the good work!
very impressive, I am learning a lot from watching your videos, a good friend of mine just gave me a Graco em 390 I can't wait to try it out. keep up the good work, very inspiring, I would love to paint a house as quick as you do and have it look that professional
this video may be 7 years old, but still helped me in 2020! I ripped off the plastic edge of the cutting blade and then realized maybe I shouldn't have done that... but now I see that you do that too... for the same reason I did it. works much better!
I just found your channel & you are really great! I've been painting for decades but still learn from you. Thanks, & I'm going to make sure that I order any Amazon stuff thru your store link as possible.
That literally just blew my mind, I had no idea what that wide film was for! I am so glad I'm watching your videos before attempting to spray paint my house lol Thanks for the great informative videos!
Hey Chris, first your a BEAST BRO. Thanks for helping me with tips and helping me find my passion. I now got a job with a good painting company and watch your videos and keep learning everyday. Keep the videos coming brother.
Chris, if their is a little breeze, I always put a couple of cross pieces of 2020 tape across the window from side to side, at about 1/4 down, and 3/4 down. It doesn't take much wind to pull the 3M loose, when it starts flapping.
Painting, but industrial painting does it involve alot of chemicals, and rough surfaces, and high combustion point. Is kinda fun working with the hands. Love to try restoration paint projects like churches.
Hey Chris your the boss. May I suggest a receiving edge at the bottom before you pull your plastic? This I find especially useful when its windy. Also it allows to hold the plastic with two hands when under-tucking the excess. Cheers
I found it easier to use the masker on the trim around the windows instead of getting right on the window seal saves a little bit of time and when your done spraying peal the plastic off and roll and cut the trim
Great video with lots of clear instruction. My only comment would be is I think when you fold the excess plastic at the bottom you fold it up and UNDER as opposed to up in on the outside. Curious why you used 2020 tape instead of 3M 2090 tape?
i have a few of these . However i had one from about 30 years ago that i lent to an employee and was never returned. there was actually an attachment on the top of the masker above the handle . youll see the two little plastic guides there. this held a separate tape dispenser for taping down what you have masked . rather handy having that second holder for tape. Anyways i was at a show about a year and a half ago with 3m reps and they didnt know about such an attachment.
Hi Chris apparently 3M stopped making them(found this info somewhere online)and I don’t see the reason why. I’ve also been looking at their tape dispenser 3M TA-20 which was rebranded to Scotch blue TA-20(it’s a shame it’s not available in UK).They are still making the dispenser you mentioned but as a Scotch blue version.
Hey great videos I'm a brand new union painter wondering if u can gimmie some advice on what do u think the average time frame should be to mask a door or window, I just need something to go by cause they really don't tell me much on my second day at job and I don't wanna seem like to much of a rookie you know.
Got one & couldn't get plastic to cut clean without uneven irregular messed up end that needed a razor blade to finish. You answered my question @1:10, that stupid guard is designed to keep you from getting a cut. I'm going to take it off and I wont be spending forever either trying to cut the plastic or adding lengths of paper to correct the horribly wrong edge. Thanks & glad you pointed that out.
Hi there. Just to clarify..... you ripped off the plastic bit? I thought Chris said to use the sharp plastic blade (at about 0:57). I've been struggling to get a clean cut with both paper and plastic film for about a year 🧐
@@padgehind It a strip that runs as a guard the length of the blade, they think you are going to cut yourself. The plastic blade is has more teeth and sharper than the paper. It got in the way and messes up you trying to cut plastic which is hard enough to do. I tore it off. Had I known that it was a sharper blade I would have gotten just it for paper and plastic, it cuts the paper so much better. I wont buy another paper blade again. I reccomend you just tear it off, Im pretty sure thats what Chris was saying too, its a real pain, it will wreck your plastic, it keeps the plastic from hitting the blade halfway thru the cut, a terrible idea on 3M's part.
I find taping the sides before i tape the masking up when I'm high on a ladder works better. Tacking/taping as i unfold the film. It's there a better way?
Is there a substantial difference in the 3M film and the film made by Premier? I'm asking because I had some Premier brand and it was a major pain. If it was just me, then I get it, I'm new (brand new) to this. BUT, if there is a difference... well I still have lots of masking left to do. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR VIDS!
Chris, I've watched and used just about all of your painting tutorials and they are exceptional. Your presentation on each video is so easy to follow and understand that a novice painter, like myself, can do a quality painting job on my own. Anyone looking for tutorials on anything having to do with painting, I highly recommend Chris and his Idaho Painter video's. Chris, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I look forward to future video's from you. Ciao Oh, I'm looking to buy a spray gun. I'm interested in the Magnum 5 by Graco. What say you about this product for the novice DYI'er?
Ok, thank you for the Thumbs Up. One quick question, I'm going to be painting Wainscott/Beadboard. Since I haven't purchased the paint sprayer yet, I have to paint this by hand. My questions are: 1) Should I use a roller? And what nap? 2) Should I use the Latex Extender? Once again, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Ciao
Thank you for your suggestion. I live in S. Florida and I've been to Home Depot and Lowes and neither seel Latex Extender. Any suggestions on where to find it. Thanks again...
Hey! I just tried using one today to cover up some new windows that were installed. Although I painted the trim with a brush and roller I didn't want to get any drips on new screens, Windows, frames, etc. I used green frog tape to adhere to the sides to edge it all out with the exception of the blue that was on the tool with the plastic film. Would I have been okay to leave it up overnight if i decided to do a second coat of paint or is it necessary to pull the tape and film off when wet so it doesn't bridge?
May I know how wide a masking tape is supported by the 3M hand-masker? From the videos, it seems that tapes less than 2 inch wide are typical. Can 2 inch wide masking tapes be used with this tool? Thanks very much.
Charles Frey , it is 29.99 now, just bought it today. My old one walked away with painters guys I hired. Now I am redoing their terrible job and buying all the equipment again.
you only spray the houses you paint? never with brushes and rollers? it looks very time efficient. not sure why we(partically our company here in sweden) only use handtools like rollers and brushes.
I just got one at home depot they have a better price than lowes or even Sherwin Williams sale price and it came with the ladder hook and I could only find the straight cut blades at Sherwin Williams.
Why do they call this a masking film? This is nothing more than a plastic sheet. You can’t use this like an adhesive film to actually mask detailed jobs. Masking tape leaves rough edges when cut to shape, I need something with clean, sharp edges after cutting. Like an adhesive film that I thought this was. Any suggestions?

Can you recommend a good roller cover for painting interior walls?
I have this same masker and the tape keeps rolling off the plastic.and tips on how to make it stop doing this?
that would be a pretty hilarious technique on Maui
Binge watching all your videos I haven't seen my man. 🍿👀

Do you get the hand masker free when you buy a box of plastic?
Any idea when the PLTV store will restock the kit w/ the 15 rolls and blade?
They have been waiting months! Just push the notify me button and when back in stock you will be notified.

What's the best way to mask a front door with a 4 foot oval window with textured glass?
Frog tape for the door with paper or plastic in the middle

There's no real difference. The plastic covers up to 6 feet depending on how far.you unfold it and the paper only covers 9 inches at a time.
