  • Yesterday Canada reversed its international isolation on Palestine at the United Nations by voting with most of world in favour of a ceasefire. On Talking foreign policy: an internationalist perspective on Canada’s role abroad, Yves Engler interviews Dimitri Lascaris about the Trudeau government's important, if limited, policy shift.

It is not war, it is colonization. It is not eviction but ethnic cleansing. It is not conflict but occupation. It is not complicated, it is genocide. Some facts should not be normalize. Conscience does not accept this and neither should humanity.

You actually believe Hamas casualties reports. Maybe the number of civilians killed has something to do with Hamas using them as shields.
And accept the Hamas raid and atrocities as justified. You accept that taking innocent civilians as hostages is justified?

Dimitri touched on Canada's year-end voting record on the question of Palestine in the General Assembly. When Freeland was in charge, Canada joined the US in voting AGAINST the Palestinian right to self-determination and the controlled media kept quiet. In the same time frame, Freeland had created a spat with the Saudis over women's rights, and the same media featured Trudeau declaring that he stood for human rights anywhere in the world.

I totally agree with Dimitri. I was relieved to hear Canada voted in favour of the ceasefire 16:28 but soon discovered it was disingenuous. Only a few hours later, Jolly declared that despite voting for a ceasefire, Canada stands in firm support of Israel need to defend itself. Declaring the latter makes the vote hollow and hypocritical. Regarding the “need for defence” argument, the Trudeau cabinet needs to educate themselves on the ICC meaning of force defence, particularly as it applies to colonial rulers. Continuing to support /grant impunity to the Israeli Zionists in their genocide of the Palestinian civilians, translates to complicity.

*As a European Union citizen and resident of Spain, I consider Canada as a type of vassal state of the USA. I am bound to say I was surprised that Canada did not support the USA by voting for a ceasefire in Palestine. Dimitri Lascaris gives us a helpful perspective, especially in explaining how Canada appears petrified to vote against the Americans without other former English properties such as Australia and New Zealand giving a lead.*

Well, the american government is kind of nuts, so that explains that. But you are right, Canada is in the G8 only because the US wanted a 'vassal state' that would go along with it. Sometimes we get a PM who is 'uppity', but mostly for show.
In this case Trudeau is trying to appeal to 'liberals' and differentiate himself from the conservative party.

    • @dinnerwithfranklin2451

You are not wrong in considering Canada a vassal state. Their police already have the right to arrest people inside our borders. And at least one military unit is combined between the two countries. We aren't just a vassal of the states, our government are eager vassals.

@@dinnerwithfranklin2451 Like the US the difference certainly isn't in foreign relations, but with some social policies, although as you say, not much. The liberals have some more gun control laws that the conservatives would kill, and the carbon tax will likley be gone under conservatives, but thats about the only real difference.
Most of the social policies that are progressive at all are pushed by the NDP.

Too little, too late. As a Canadian I am disgusted by what our governments help the Americans achieve in the global South. Our foreign policies (under any government) are a shameful reminder that we simply do the bidding of the US to our own detriment. Our governments (Tory or Liberal - it's the same result) have eroded the moral fabric of our society and spread disunity. We want a lasting peace in Palestine and we do not support Israel in any way. We do not support colonialism or apartheid.
