      I did to show my wife by video how the 5 connect from Lexington to IRT-2. Nice to see it in high definition since I used to travel these lines to/from work and going places. You also may be able to see the boxes, (don't know the name), the train operator has to press the bottom according to the line. This allow them to change track to their correct turns. Great experience to see the trips from the "Train Operator" view (Front-View).

    57:15. Right there. The 4 takes the switch to the left. The 5 starts diving right after that and basically swings 90 degrees, from going Northbound to Eastbound.
    1:12:32. Another key interlocking. The 2 takes the switch to the left and heads to White Plains Road, passing underneath the Southbound 5 track.

The timer after 86th sb is to prevent trains from over-speeding due to the downgrade. But unfortunately the new generation of train ops tend to stay on the slow side to prevent write-ups and station overruns. They rush the new generation of train ops through training. Most of these new train ops have no idea how the train characteristics are. No one train is the same. R142 #6686 may have touchy brakes while R142 #6925 may be a fast train with weak service brakes. This service is notorious for having three separate bottlenecks. In order in the northbound direction are below:
    -9:34 at Franklin Ave: The Nostrand Ave Line is a split from the local tracks so the 5 needs to cross over the local tracks to get to the express tracks which can delay 3 trains.
    -57:16 at 149th St: Although a full flying junction, the curve is extremely tight and 2 and 4 trains have to occasionally wait.
    -1:12:16 at E 180th St. This is only an issue for peak-direction express trains because the Dyre Ave Line only connects to the local tracks so like at Franklin Ave, express trains have to cross over the local tracks.
    Because of this, it might be better off if the 5 is eliminated and the Dyre Ave Line becomes a continuation of the Second Ave Line and then the Q or T can run there instead once it’s complete by extending it to the Bronx and linking to it. Plus, after 149th St’s elevators are complete, wheelchair users can transfer too. As for Franklin Ave, cross-platform transfers automatically eliminate any issues.

    Dont really ride trains anymore as I have a car now. But I do remember riding this everyday after school and after work a few years later. I know it's because there are a lot of curves but I always despised how slow the 5 express train is in the Bronx, especially after 174th street. As you see in the video, the 2 train that became visible as early as Intervale Av/Simpson St, still manages to catch up to the 5 train and even gets priority to leave first at East 180th. You really only save like 6 minutes riding the 5 express over the 2 local. I am a bus operator now out of Gun Hill depot and it would be cool to have a camera attached to my bus to show the world my journey on some routes lol.

    • @wtaenyc
      @wtaenyc  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much for sharing this perspective. It is quite interesting how the 2 train is able to catch up to the express in this way. It is possible that this is already something that they are aware of and working on but either way, your comment brings awareness to it and we manifest things changing in the future. Thank you as well for your service to NYC and we’re honored to assist with bringing back those fond memories. 🏆🫡

  • @the_elmeister
    @the_elmeister 10 месяцев назад +4

    U do fantastic. Hope you make returns to the routes in the future like how Chicago does their full rides. You never know what you might expect in a full ride. They do updated versions at some point and many people who do runs number their runs such as #1 or #2 and so on. In this case, you would label this version as West Farms Express 1. Now the version you did on the 2 line that is not the peak direction local like it would be in the rush-hour. When you did the 2, that is when the 2 and 5 trains both run local in the Bronx so that it’s just a normal 2 train ride. If it was a peak direction local run on the 2 you would’ve done it during rush hour. Eventually, you will need to do the peak direction local run on the 2 during rush hour in both directions same with the 5, but you will also need to do the 5 during the midday at some point as well when it makes all stops in the Bronx.

    My home (#5 Dyre Avenue line) all my life along with the 2 line. The best part riding the 5 train is that it’s quicker and has less stops than the 2 train. What definitely needs improvement is the less frequency in service when you have the split rush hour service between Dyre/Nereid and the 20 minute wait times when the 4, 5, and 6 lines share tracks during construction on weekends.
