it's so nice to watch a tutorial where the person actually knows what they're talking about lol too many times have i watched a video where they're just like "uhhh..just click this thing, copy these values..and yeah." i like that you thoroughly explain the broader concepts so we can make the proper adjustments regardless of what DAW/samples we're using!
ploxyzero Thanks for this comment 🙏🏽 I try my best to put myself in the viewer’s shoes. I didn’t have youtube when I started producing, and when I did, I really didn’t have very many videos to rely on. So I’m more than happy to hear these videos make a difference!
I hadnt had the chance to thank you, you are really a good teacher, I was struggling wiht low ends and some other things until I found your channel. I am almost finishing watching all of your videos. They are really good from top to bottom, Keep it up man.
At the end of the day, it really just depends on your taste/genre/workflow. Hopefully these tips can help you out if you're someone that doesn't necessarily like using sidechain techniques. I personally switch back and forth depending on the track. Either way, the most important thing is to check your phase alignment anytime you layer sounds in the same frequency range, like your kick and bass sounds.
This Video was on point Ian, you were in rare form on this one, I knew this info but you taught me something new tricks, Gonna run over and purchase that drum kit!
@@ampent4204 Sounds good! Feel free to hop in the beat critiques on my live channel if you make some tracks with it or if you just want feedback in general.
i was wondering why kennybeats is so much against sidechaining kicks and 808s. IMO it really does sound better when they're layered like this instead of sidechaining
Really on point video Ian thank you again for your expertise. I have been using the sample delay technique lately and after I mix it to taste with the kick and 808 relationship I always print the wave form out in Edison to see the relationship between the kick and 808 and adjust as needed/ rinse repeat until happy with the results. How perfect can these wave forms actually get when blended together or is that over thinking when it comes to the macro level visual imperfections when it sounds just fine?
Jere Freeman you won’t ever get a perfect result because the 808 or bass will change throughout your song. Just check the phase for the best version between the two and stick with that. For the most part, it will stay consistent enough as the bassline changes notes. There are plugins that will keep them aligned but I don’t own any so I can’t speak on how well they work. Haven’t really needed them. Most listeners won’t notice as long as you get a close enough alignment.
Reversing polarity works to a certain extent, but usually two different signals will not be a mirror opposite of each other. Also, when an 808 changes notes while the kick stays at the same pitch, noticeable phase issues will occur when certain 808 notes hit. Reversing polarity will not fix this issue.
UN SCAMMABLE good to see you in the comments! I found the answer by typing in flip phase mixer Logic Pro into google. I don’t know if that’s your version, but I’m sure you can do a similar search and get the exact answer for your version.
UN SCAMMABLE I would have copied and pasted here but I’m on my phone and I did the search on desktop. But I can’t directly reply on desktop so yeah lol sorry
I never used sidechaining honestly. I just pick a kick that sounds good and doesn’t crash with the 808 and mix the kick and 808 to where neither one of them hit too hard over another
It seems to me that those equalizations on the bass would only work best if you're playing the same note. But who wants their bass to play the same note all the way through a song? I saw another technique in another video for psytrance production in which you actually create your own synth bass and turn it into a sample, then do the same thing with a kick. You also build these so there's no equalization needed, subtracting the chance for phase changes through parametric equalization. You construct them both so they already have exactly the same phase alignment. Then, the retrigger ensures that both the kick and the bass sound exactly the same with every hit. With the perfect phase alignment, the bass gives the kick more power without using sidechain compression, which only hides the bass to make the kick stand out more. Perfect phase alignment is better in every way because even though sidechain compression will duck the bass, any amount of phase cancellation will still take power away from the kick, even if it is only a small amount. Of course, there's also a problem with perfect phase alignment, in that it only works best when your kick and bass are playing at exactly the same frequency. At the same time, it doesn't sound so great if you change the pitch of the kick every time the pitch of the bass changes! Melodically, it probably sounds better to have the sub-bass play the same notes in its own octave as the actual bass, but then you lose that perfect relationship with the kick! Maybe, with the increased difficulty of detecting actual pitch in the sub-bass frequency range, sacrificing negligible harmony for a perfect kick/bass relationship is probably the best way to go.
Phanes Erichthoneus unless you melodically play your kick the same as you do with your bass you will absolutely get some phase cancellation. The eq allows you to clean up any extra freqs you don’t need that might add to that. This is why we are using our ears when we eq to listen for good phase alignment, no matter how imperfect it is. We are not trying to achieve perfection. We are simply improving the sound. You’ll notice if you follow what I show in the video, the polarity you choose will normally remain the best option with the bass line of your song. It definitely will not be perfect, but it will indeed be more powerful than if you didn’t check the phase.
Phanes Erichthoneus if done correctly, your decisions will allow the average listener to enjoy the music as long as the song itself is good. That’s what really matters. In trap production, I tend to use what I showed in this video along with slight sidechaining. When the sidechain isn’t ducking the clashing frequencies completely, you can get more power by checking the phase relationship. From there I might adjust the pitch if the kick up or down, up to two semitones to get even more alignment. In ever case I’ve come across, this has been more than enough to maintain power and consistency throughout the track. Is it perfect? No, but that has never been the point of making great music.
@@Inflightmuzik Yes, I agree with you on all that. As one who really doesn't like the sound of ducking (especially when it's overdone), other methods are definitely preferable. Thanks for the response! Oh, I subscribed, by the way. :-)

Should you work on the kick/808 being in phase first (if inverse doesn't do the trick) or should you EQ cut/boost first?
