I love your content because you explain things very clearly and don't go too fast so that I have to keep pausing the video, but you dont go so slow that I get bored and fall asleep. I also appreciate when you zoom into the specific settings. I have a track and need to fix up my kick drum and my lead synths and once I get past that wall I will start the "mixing phase" finally... These videos are very helpful. What I'm learning is that this stuff is some weird cross between creative/music and engineering work. Tough in the short run, but probably a lot of fun in the long run!
Good explanation! Good video; Also, worth looking at tweaking/considering the look-ahead on the gate; So it opens up bang on when that transient from the initial kick hits;
Depends what works for you and if the lookhead gives you a more desired outcome, then use it. 😊 I like to have the body of my sound to come slightly after, so that the transient has complete space to punch through in the mix. The gate in this video has a 1.5ms lookahead, which I left untouched but I'm sure playing around with the settings will definitely change how things sound.
Additional note : should have pointed out that my transient comes from the original drum the layer, not the sub. Maybe that's where the confusion came from?
In some situations it also can be helpful to use some oscilloscope plugin to allow to take a closer look at the combined waveform to actually see if You have phase issues or if Your sub kicks in to late or too early. This also can be achieved by just resampling the master and then checking the waveform of the resample.
@@vertecsrecordings totally agree. Great way to check for phase issues. Sometimes I like to bounce the files to audio and then combine the two waveforms together on one track so that they become one complete file. The transient and the body in one. Then you have 0 phase issues.
Somehow I missed this video when it was originally posted (you linked to it from the Kick 2 review)! Soooooooooo helpful!! Especially to warn about the phase cancellation aspect. TLDR: You make, I watch, I learn, I thank!! 🙏🏾👍🏾👍🏾🙏🏾
Happy Birthday, Becky. How kind of you to gift us on your bday.. I needed this one ,too. Especially the part you talked about using the utility plug to address polarity issues. It’s always good to use stock plugins where applicable so many thanks and cheers! 🎂 🎉
Thanks for the birthday wishes! I was honestly so close to using third party plugins for all of this tutorial and then I literally stopped myself and was like "nah, I can do all of this with stock plugins. let's do it for the people." hahaha
Hey Becky just something to add to your method here, there’s a free oscilloscope called psyscope that allows you to analyze the waveforms of 2 signals simultaneously, that helps a lot when you’re trying to get your kick and sub in alignment!
Great trick! Just one nerdy comment: Adjusting the Attack in Operator won´t affect the punchness throughout the the sustained note, because Operator is just triggered once. This is done solely by the noise gate. But anyway this is really a great and easy way to get more ooomph in the lower ranges..... Keep them comming Becky. I really like You easy to follow and allways helpfull tuts....
What about the first time the note is triggered? It was more a comment to get rid of any clicks and the combined use of the attack on both will remove all clicks throughout (including the first time the note is triggered). I hear what you're saying but it's quite a picky comment to make.
@@BeckySaifMusic Hey Becky, no offence! Sorry If I came across picky. That was was not my intetion! Your right, it helps to get rid of a potential click at the beginning of the note. And again, I´m very far away from disliking Your vids or trolling. We´re all learning a lot from Your tips. I just wanted to add some further information. Hope that makes sense now....😊
@@vertecsrecordings All good. 😊 Appreciate the response. It will help others to understand the topic further at least. I just can't really break down every single minor detail with an explaination in every video and, at the same time, make the video engaging and informative, whilst staying on topic. I took it personally because it happens a lot on my channel lately and I don't see this on other peoples videos, teaching exactly the same topics.
@@BeckySaifMusic Yeah, I know exactly what You mean. There´s a lot of bullshittery out there. Don´t let this come too close to You. Peace out....🙂
@@vertecsrecordings awww thank you. Yeah honestly I'm learning to navigate the minefield at the moment. I'll hold my hands up if I make a mistake but people do enjoy picking at stuff regardless. I just gotta learn this part too. I thought I was just gonna help people with my youtube channel, not open the door to all this other stuff too 🤣
Yeah I do actually. I use a lot of their snapins. Like, a lot, and often. Ngl, I have to force myself to use Phase Plant but that's because of the UI. It's actually really powerful with it's modular capabilities but it's a bit of a brain scrambler at times.
@@BeckySaifMusic appreciate the insight … the monthly sub price is attractive vs ponying up 100$ for say Serum alone , and you get all the snap ins like you say and so good preset banks for phase plant (inc one made by Pegboard Nerds who are one of my non dnb guilt pleasures 😂) Think I’ve found a made who can me ableton on education license, then can grab kilohearts sub, then purchase your course obviously and (hopefully) start smashing out some tunes
@@nickclarke8138 you can rent to own serum via splice. It's like $10 a month and you get full use from the first payment. That's what I did. Although Vital is a much better shout if you're looking for affordable. Hope to see you on the course soon!! Get the Ableton Suite 90 day trial 👊🚀

This video is absolutely good and deserves tens of thousands more views. Super underrated production technique, thanks!
Keep on for making great videos.

Nice video Becky. I hope Ableton is taking care of you for always showing your tips using stock plug-ins.
I did originally plan to use Vital for this but then stopped for a moment and went... hang on.... no. 😆
