Pultec EQ Atten is not related to the "High Frequency", it is related to the "Atten Sel'" that means you rolled off the frequency above 5k
This is the first video from this channel that I’ve seen with this particular instructor: I genuinely thought that this was one of the clearest explanations of an audio engineering trick I think I’ve ever seen. I literally understood every word he said, it just made perfect sense to me.
All of these people giving “constructive criticism,” like just listen to what he’s saying, he’s telling you literally everything you need to know 😂
Great job bro, I’m a fan 👊🏻
constructive criticism: you need to show the kick with effects before / after in a mix so the people can understand the difference in context
He literally did that at the end
@@DymonicM2012 show me a timestamp. I'll wait
@@thechampion3254 bruh just watch the video again
@@DymonicM2012 Are you thick? I watched the video that's why I gave feedback. There is no referencing the kick in context. Put a timestamp or jog on
In other words play the music with the new bass
Pro-Tip. The high "ATTN" frequency is selected by the "ATTN SEL" selector, NOT the "High Frequency" selector . So, you are cutting at 5K, NOT 3k.
I recently discovered the MV2 and its been a great addition for me. Especially for my kick. I use a lot of double bass in my music, the MV2 has been a God sent.
🔥🔥🔥🔥 Definitely looking forward to next step in this series. Curious to see how you Phase check your Kick as well.Great content.
Thanks for sharing this! 👍
Man, thanks! you rock!
thanks for this gem kind sir!
That was great!
VERY helpful!!! Thanks!!!
Super video, MV2 very good plugin..Thanks guys!!!
Man, thanks.
The High Frequency selector and the the Attenuation knob, don't work together. The Atten knob is affected by the Attenuation Selector.
Yep. It was actually 5k. He knew that. Just made a mistake. It's a great technique though. I do this with a dbx160 and pultec, hardware or plugin.
yeah i was checking the comments to see if someone noted this
Bravo!
Nice stuff! Please do the "doesn't that add a lot of volume" fix video! That is really needed to get the most out of this video! Great tip! Thanks!
very effective
Thanks! Could you do the headroom video please! Cheers!
I wanna see the next step where you get all that ‘power’ without chowing any headroom.. but dope trick man, thanks for simplifying it ❤
It'd be nice to hear it in context with the complete track.
Sounds great solo, btw
Devvon never misses!!!
Okay but where;s that video about the headroom, I definitely need that
Love the concept. I record mostly rock stuff, but the low end thump always seems a little too light. I’m gonna give it a whirl
Obviously sounds massive, if you're not compensating the gain introduced by the new squashed kick, it sounds just louder.
@@r3furbish3dbrain12 sorry but at the end this is not compression, he is ADDING 2 signals (one of them being a compressed copy of the other), but an addition actually. The only sum of 2 signals being 0 as result is 0+0.
Good, it reminds of the "New York" compression technique.
That’s just parallel compression
@@memeswillneverdie Not really. The NY compression style: Aggressively compress using a ratio of 8:1 to 12:1, or more, add an EQ to the compressor with boosted low end and high end (around 100Hz and 10KHz).
Thank you for this vid. But why are you using a stereo track for your kicks? Just curious.
This parallel process is an old Dave Pensado technique, and the original process was a combination of dbx and pultec. Joshua just used Dave's technique to emulate Bob Power's low end, this does not imply Bob Power's actual process.
Knock does something similar with the sub function wouldn’t that be a lot easier without the extra duplication
Great Video. The upwards compressor is called an expander. Future topics I'd like to see is mixing bass / 808s and balancing a mix. Thanks for helping me Devon
MV2 is a very good plugin👍☝
The concept is from Bob Power but this very processing is from Jaycen Joshua. its a great technique
Isn't the same principle of plugins like Maxxbass?
Good video, but i think you should had given the advice to use a linear phase EQ in the parallel track.
Possibly, but the EQ curve of the Pultec and the Non linear Saturation was probably part of the 'sauce' he was trying to add to the Kick. He did mention checking the phase though with some meter and inverting it if need be.
@@STyonk Nope I'd never had any phase problems with a UAD pultec. Had he used a hpf, he may have needed it.
@@STyonk Possibly, just saying that should mention it, maybe in the future video of phase he talk about this. Using Linear Phase EQ when processing a parallel track its not a mantra, but I think it deserve to always test it if works on this type of scenario, maybe he test it and the solution was worst than the problem due to pre-ringing. Any way good video and great plugin, I use this exact technique on vocals.
Definitely, Linear Phase is an advanced concept to explore. Seems he wanted to keep it more simple to not intimidate beginners.
Linear Phase EQ when treating transient material tends to cause smearing , which might be less preferable on Drums. But it's a good theoretical topic to explore.
Is this NY compression but just on the kick ?
I’m listening on my phone and it sounds a little more kicky
I'm just wondering why you didn't send the kick to a buss with the MV and EQ on it? Like why copy the track? Or is it 6 of one and six of the other?
Serious question. Why wearing 2 watches?
Love the tip. It’s called an expander and it does expansion, like a compressor does compression. I didn’t know this use of it, but I have gotten some similar impacts with a multiband compressor/expander, getting parallel compression/expansion by adjusting the wet/dry knob.
What’s the use difference of an upward compressor vs downward compressor?
downward compressor reduce the signal amplitude above a set threshold (reducing transients), while upward compressor amplifies the signal below a set threshold (boosting the quit parts)
He literally explained it in the video lol
Warren Huart has been showing the Waves MV2 usage for over 10 yrs now... HE explains and shows actual usage much better. Not just for drums...
Careful calling out with name dropping lol... Usually one should know the one they mention...
Your hair looks like it’s floating😂😂😂
study you squirt
i get a kick that will get out of your headphones with just clipping and eq and if added compression and subs fatner ow my god rip ears
I do all this in the instrument! And never distord anything in the DAW...
would be smoother to listen without the interference signal of the mic.

HELP ME DEVVON, that's his channel. This man and his team has been doing good shiet in mixing/mastering.
This is a great trick for hip hop but it doesn't woek in pstrance unfortunately
Love the video bro but your voice is way too loud compared to the kick and protools in general
👀
You guys give lessons for logic ?
I felt like it was upwardly compressed.
Just use knock
💎🙏🏿💪🏿🔥💪🏿👍🏿🔥🫡💯💯💯thanks
3:04 So... an expander.
Not quite, an expander attenuates the signal that goes below the threshold to expand the dynamic range (basically just a really soft gate) vs upward compression increases the volume of the signal that goes below the threshold thus bringing up the quiet parts instead of smashing the transients
Not crediting Jaycen Joshua for this exact technique is crazy. Even that fact you adopted Jaycen's exact body language with the fist is also crazy. Pay your respects dude... you're stealing!.
My man's never used a Pultech before. So the BOOST frequency is 3k, sure, but the Attentuation frequency is 5k. You aren't touching 3k at all but are attenuating over 5k. You still got the results obviously, but just saying. When talking newbs on RUclips though this stuff, might be better to be familiar with your tools. Peace
Yea, thnx for pointing this out!! The BOOST for high frequencies are the Lower knob, Attenuation for HIGH frequencies are to the right. Attenuation Selector knob.
don't go out on a windy day with that hair😅
