For those who know music theory.. For the minor scale avoid the 7th scale degree and use the 4th if you don't want it to be too dark or want variation For the major scale avoid the 5th scale degree and use the 2nd if you don't want it to be too dark or want variation For the phrygian mode avoid the 3rd scale degree and use the 7th if you don't want it to be too dark or want variation For harmonic minor its the same for the natural minor scale except you can use the 7th since its being raised and made into a major 7th interval.

Very thankful and appreciate the knowledge you give for real and best tutorials for fl. Question though, how did you discover this method and what type of theory(or lack of lol) is being used? Thank you again for the what you do!
Tjay X Thanks bro. People forget that music theory came after music itself. Traditionally this would be categorized as a hexatonic scale, meaning it uses 6 notes to make up the scale. However, this particular scale was never taught to me and I’ve still have not seen this mentioned before. I believe it’s mainly because trap, specifically dark trap, is so new compared to everything else. But after making so many tracks in this genre/sub genre, I noticed a pattern. This is a weird trait that I have that is how I taught myself piano. In college I decided to finally learn traditional theory, but basically realized everything I taught myself was what they were teaching except I learned it in a very different way and had my own names for certain things. But I also realized people seem to have a better grasp on the way I explain/teach vs traditional theory because I teach specifically to get people to make music in a DAW vs. teaching people to read and write music notation. Two very different things with very different goals. One is for making beats by yourself on your computer, the other is tailored for communicating music to other musicians/band members who already understand traditional music theory. I feel modern music/online producers are more geared towards the solo beat making side of things, which is why I teach this way instead. I have a part 2 of this video coming out soon that will make this even more simple for anyone. Stay tuned!
abhistha chatterjee. It’s coming in a week or two along with a whole new music theory series based on dark trap without the confusion of traditional theory. This will probably. E my best series of videos so far!
So for the most part if we wanted to make a dark melody say in c# major, we mine as well would just use a# minor since those are the notes we would end up using anyways correct?
In a nutshell, yes. In reality, the point of the video is that every major scale has an identical minor scale. It's all about how you use the notes that makes it dark. That's why I show you what notes to focus on to make it automatically dark by not using certain notes.
Officialmaas I might do a “If I made a beat for Post Malone.” I try not to make type beats. I just do my own thing and if I think a certain artist might like it, I’ll call it a type beat. But I don’t want to fool anyone into thinking this is how you make a Post Malone type beat because it’s actually not at all, it’s just what I would do if I produced a song for him if that makes sense haha
understood , will you be doing more scale theory , because this video just helped my dark melodies so much , crazy how one note can make something sound happy
Officialmaas Yessir. I have something special when we hit 1,000 subs dealing with that. Should only be a week or two from now. It will be even better than this video.
Hi! I would like begin with that I really appreciate the time you put in your videos to explain things. It helps a lot! I noticed one thing though and that is the note that you talked about avoiding, in the beginning of your video, if you wanna achieve a more darker sound, which was the note D. I noticed now that you start melody #2 with that specific note you talked about. Why? Sorry if I misunderstood something but could you explain that? Greetings from Northern Europe!
Thanks for watching! Ok, so the notes I show you at the beginning of the video is a pattern of notes. The idea is that exact pattern can be placed anywhere on the keyboard to achieve these dark melodies by starting with the 3 notes I highlighted and avoiding the note I didn't place in that pattern. That part you clearly understand. Where you're confused is, you're thinking I'm literally saying never play D. That's incorrect. You'll notice depending on the scale (minor, major etc.) That pattern I showed you is positioned on different notes in that scale. This is why, for example, in Minor, I show you the note we are avoiding has been moved. To find this note in the minor scale you choose (A,B,C etc). You go to the root note, and count down 1 note away in the scale from the root note, which is the same as counting up 6 notes in the scale as well. So, in other words. If we are playing in the scale of G Minor (like in the example you're referring to) The note we are avoiding is actually F. And the three new starting notes are the root (G), three notes down from the root (D, like in the second example) and two notes down (D#, like in the third example). At the beginning of each section of the tutorial, I show you the new note to avoid and the new notes you start on in Minor, Major, Phrygian and Harmonic Minor. In the description of this video I posted the FLP which includes the midi I used in this video. So now, you can just pick any scale and use the midi pattern I show you at the beginning of the video (midi is included in the DL) and place that pattern to match up in whatever scale you chose. Just drag in the midi and move the whole thing up or down until the notes match only the notes in the scale (it will work everytime). I have your starting notes highlighted for you. I also highlighted the note you avoid in red. I even highlighted harmonic minor for you in purple. There are additional notes in the FLP to get you started. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions, because that was a GREAT one and I can see how people can be confused when I clearly showed "D" as an example of the note to avoid and I didn't avoid it in the second example like you said. But again, the reason being, I was showing you a pattern, not exact notes to avoid. The exact notes change depending what scale and key you're playing in.
Also, to put it more simply, the pattern I show you at the beginning is what you would use in G Major. So in G Major, we avoid D. But in Minor, Phrygian, etc, the specific notes we use and avoid are different (but it's the same exact pattern of notes with the same spacing). In the FLP I provided you'll see in the Pattern View, I wrote the name of the scale and the note to avoid in "( )". So in Minor we are now avoiding (-1 +6) which is mean we avoid the note 1 down away from the root note in the scale and the note 6 up from the root in the scale, by only counting notes in the scale. Those are exactly the same note (an octave apart) When we do that, you see the note we avoid in G Minor is F.
Wow! It's the first I get a quick response. You rule man! It's a bit late over here and I'm trying to avoid from getting my head falling on the desk haha. I will go through your response tomorrow when I'm more clear in my head and get back to you. Thanks again! Really appreciate it! @@Inflightmuzik Take care!
@@truetrueman680 No problem man! I want to do my best to help and make my videos as clear and thorough as possible. That's why I love comments and questions like yours because it gives me chance to clear up any questions that people might have that I haven't thought of so, thank you! You all help me be a better teacher.
Hi again Ian!@@Inflightmuzik Sorry for the delayed answer but it's been a few busy days. I think I were in a bit hurry to understand the concept and therefore missed some important keywords in your tutorial. I think I got better now than in the beginning, when I saw your video the first time. I may have to look at it a few times more until it really sits in my head because I don't have so much knowledge about musical theory in the first place. My problem is that I sometimes can get frustrated over that I can't get a grip of it when I try to learn new things. So to make sure that I understand the purpose of this video, it's mainly about that pattern and that its keep showing up no matter what scale? And therefore it's easier, when understanding this of course, to make darker melodies faster?
Whoa man..!! I was totally blown by this tutorial...I'm a newbie progressive house producer mainly, and recently i've taken a keen interest in trap with dark melodies...I was totally wondering why the heck was my melody always sounded kinda less dark...this tut really adds up to my knowledge...I cant thank you enough for this knowledge...much appreciated my man! I was thinking of making a trap track with arabic scale...will these tricks gonna work out fine in that scale?? And also I want know a way in which producers, especially beginners can get constructive feedbacks and collabs because I feel those two are the best way to learn stuffs of one another? *sorry for the long comment..
abhistha chatterjee long comments are usually my favorite 💯🙏🏽. Checked out my first and second video on the channel, specifically the second video. It covers the Arabic scale. Also, the best way to get feedback is by submitting to live beat critiques. I’ll probably start doing that soon. Also will start a discord for you guys to collabs with each other soon!
@@Inflightmuzik if you start giving feedbacks then prolly you'll get hundreds of beats...i know its not possible to give constructive feedbacks on each one of them 😥 And yes, a platform to collab would be the best thing ever...
abhistha chatterjee for sure, just make sure you have notifications for the channel turned on so you hop in the live and be one of the first to submit. I’ll also have a way for you to skip the line for a small fee for people who really need to get in and get out
Yo man..!! That'd be great...start asap...and also I think it woukd be beneficial for producers to know how to make it in the industry, how to start and proceed...how to groe a fanbase, marketing...what video recording softwares and gears to use and stuffs like that... I totally like the way you take you time to read every comment and reply to them...keep it up...lots of love and best wishes from India..
abhistha chatterjee shout out to India bro! As soon as I finish up some of these basic production videos, I’ll get more into the business side for sure.
@@tiestolqa146 Sorry, I read that wrong. I thought you asked "how do you" not "do a how to" lol. That's why I answered that way because there isn't a simple answer to comment other than what I said. But yeah, I can do a video on uplifting music.
love your vids bro, quick question not sure if its been asked but from your video if you are in G minor but you are starting your melody in D doesn't that change your scale?
controversialnyc Thanks for the love! Interesting question, but the answer is no. What’s you’re thinking behind that concept? The notes in G minor are g, a, bflat, c, d, eflat, and f. The note you start on doesn’t change anything in terms of the scale. But if you look into the concept of modes, this is why they are popular. They use the same notes in the scale but start on other notes in the scale, making the root note sound different than it was in the scale. So instead of G, the root note sounds like it’s D, but it’s still the same scale, just a different mode.
G minor is also B-flat major. And since Starting on G puts you in the Aeolian (minor) mode, starting on D would have you playing D Phrygian. Which is still a nice dark tone.
Nice video bro, you make some great content. But is there really a point in knowing all this when I can easily by ear just tell which notes fit the vibe and which sound off?
Daniel Caspiani Adl I personally do everything by ear, and have been doing it long enough I know by heart what notes to go to for the sound I’m going for. If I didn’t, I would be doing a lot of trial and error, which is how I taught myself piano. I made this to help people avoid the guessing game if they aren’t as fluid playing by ear.
If we're putting a dark melody similar to these over a chord progression should we be avoiding the same notes in our chords that were avoiding in our melodies? For example in major we avoid 3 down or 4 up from the root should we be avoiding 3 down or 4 up in our chords as well?
The root note is a great place to start. But it's not what I always start with. But yeah, typically the first chord's root note is what you'll go with and progress with the roots of each chord. But you'll want to make things more interesting than that. But still, that's def a great place to start when you're coming up with your basslines.
You are 100% right! I'll see what I can do. I'll try to upload a dropbox link to it today. The piano is just FL keys so the FLP should work for everyone with FL 20. I'll add the midi too so people with older versions and still use that. Looks like yall might have 12 royaltee free loops by the end of the day! (Plus the chord progression at the end). Good call not edwards, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Baby Lion Baby Lion why? No one uses it, including myself. And people who say they do are totally confused about what it is and aren’t really using it. That’s not something used in popular modern western music, the music you probably listen to. Stick with major, minor, harmonic minor and you’ll be more than fine. There is no song on billboard using melodic minor. Feel free to look into that more, but I don’t want to make a tutorial on something I don’t recommend.
Baby Lion if you’re serious about learning melodic minor, check out some jazz tutorials or jazz RUclips channels. I don’t really plan on covering anything outside of modern popular music. I feel you if that’s what you’re into, because I definitely listen to a lot of jazz and blues (I’m from St.Louis and live in Louisiana) but it’s not what this channel is about so I really don’t plan on covering that. Sorry brotha.
I always tried to analyze darkness, what is it that makes melodies dark? In the most of the time I ended in Sad melodies, but not dark, I want to thank you a lot, it is so simple but a game changer for me.
Nathan Garcia I’m going to do multiple tutorial series called “If I Made a Beat With ‘X’” “If I Made an ‘X’ type beat” If I collabed with ‘X’” and “If ‘X’ made beats with FL Studio”. I don’t plan on making a “how to make ‘X’ type beat though. I’m just here to give you tips and tricks to make your own style. Any tutorial saying “How to make a type beat” always turns out sounding like a generic version of it and then you end up doing a generic version of what they showed you. So it’s like a copy of a copy and the original wasn’t even used. Still, there are plenty of how to make Pierre and Playboi tutorials out there if that’s the route you want to go. But my channel is dedicated to helping you find your own sound, not to sound like someone else. At best, the tutorial series I have planned will I’ll cover techniques they might use, like in my cubeatz sampling tutorial, but even that isn’t a “type beat” tutorial. Again, I don’t want to discourage you from watching those kinds of tutorials. Just speaking from experience...I’ve yet to hear one that sounds as good as the original and haven’t heard any beats labeled as such that don’t sound like a generic version of what they are claiming to be. The best beats I’ve heard that use that label take some elements and make their own style from it, which I encourage you to do from those tutorials. That’s the difference between what I’ll be showing you vs. what everyone else is saying they are showing you.
@@Inflightmuzik Appreciate that! That is so true that many type beat videos just end up creating a generic/ watered down version of the original songs. and I would rather want to create my own style rather than copy ones other for sure. Your videos are so informative and i have learned a lot more from your channel than most on youtube. I will be looking forward to your upcoming videos for sure!

i do plan on remaking this video and including a free midi kit with it. Coming soon! Sound selection/sound design is my next topic in a couple of weeks. I still have some other videos I have to finish up first
Man you got us trippin over here. We love your teaching!!! plz do a video were you show the chords used in metro boomin scale lex scale drake scale ect. This will give us the chance to create our own style progressions based on the scales they use from the already working scales/chords used in modern music on the billboard charts...
G what? Major, minor, phrygian, harmonic minor? Which G are you talking about? I broke each one down in the video my dude. The short answer is no, to all of the above. I can't retype everything I showed in the video. But in none of those examples do I say avoid the root note, which is what you're implying by saying if you were in the key of G (in any scale) you would avoid G. Nah, you definitely are going to use G. The note you avoid and the notes you should start on (which is just as important, if not more) all depends which scale you're in. For example, in minor, you would avoid the 7th note in the scale. So for G minor, you would avoid F. This isn't something I only say once in the video. I tell you which note to avoid a minimum of 4 times for major, minor, phrygian and harmonic minor because I gave you 3 examples of each one and start by telling you the note to avoid before I even show the 3 examples.
Quatro Flamez just count the white keys moving up and down the piano roll in FL or on your keyboard. Example: A is one note below B. You can also go 6 up to play A in the next octave.
Dogeness Beats especially for chords, don’t use A major when in the e minor scale. It’s the brightest happiest chord in e minor. Can you make it work? Sure, just harder to pull off if you want to keep things dark.
R3 goham Only count using the notes in the scale. Turning on scale highlighter will show you which notes are in the scale. You count starting from the root note. I’m going to drop another video on this once we hit 1k subs with some midi that you can use as ghost notes so you don’t have to worry about counting anymore. Hope this helps in the meantime my dude!

For those who know music theory..
For the minor scale avoid the 7th scale degree and use the 4th if you don't want it to be too dark or want variation
For the major scale avoid the 5th scale degree and use the 2nd if you don't want it to be too dark or want variation
For the phrygian mode avoid the 3rd scale degree and use the 7th if you don't want it to be too dark or want variation
For harmonic minor its the same for the natural minor scale except you can use the 7th since its being raised and made into a major 7th interval.

@@Inflightmuzik
Take care!
@@truetrueman680 No problem man! I want to do my best to help and make my videos as clear and thorough as possible. That's why I love comments and questions like yours because it gives me chance to clear up any questions that people might have that I haven't thought of so, thank you! You all help me be a better teacher.
Hi again Ian!@@Inflightmuzik
Sorry for the delayed answer but it's been a few busy days.
@@Inflightmuzik if you start giving feedbacks then prolly you'll get hundreds of beats...i know its not possible to give constructive feedbacks on each one of them 😥
And yes, a platform to collab would be the best thing ever...
abhistha chatterjee for sure, just make sure you have notifications for the channel turned on so you hop in the live and be one of the first to submit.
Please do a how to make uplifting melodies, chords, arps etc. i need that for house music. Thanks.
Learn music theory
@@Inflightmuzik very helpful thanks.
@@tiestolqa146 Sorry, I read that wrong. I thought you asked "how do you" not "do a how to" lol. That's why I answered that way because there isn't a simple answer to comment other than what I said. But yeah, I can do a video on uplifting music.
@@Inflightmuzik thanks for the correction, you have a nice way of teaching, thats why i asked :)
how do you not have a million subs already?
love your vids bro, quick question not sure if its been asked but from your video if you are in G minor but you are starting your melody in D doesn't that change your scale?
controversialnyc Thanks for the love!
@@Inflightmuzik good to know, firing up fl studio as soon as I get home tonight!
controversialnyc Awesome to hear that! I love it when people actually put the things they learn to use!
G minor is also B-flat major. And since Starting on G puts you in the Aeolian (minor) mode, starting on D would have you playing D Phrygian. Which is still a nice dark tone.
Thank you!!!!!
Thx for the Video sub and greetings from germany
@Inflightmuzik Does the same concept (avoid a specific note) work for other genres of music like R&B, Pop, Soul, etc.?
No, this is just for dark vibes.
the notes that you teach us not to use In melody would I apply that to the chords too?
yes
Nice video bro, you make some great content. But is there really a point in knowing all this when I can easily by ear just tell which notes fit the vibe and which sound off?
Daniel Caspiani Adl I personally do everything by ear, and have been doing it long enough I know by heart what notes to go to for the sound I’m going for. If I didn’t, I would be doing a lot of trial and error, which is how I taught myself piano. I made this to help people avoid the guessing game if they aren’t as fluid playing by ear.
lol perfect video! !!
Bro can you have all these midi as free download? They too fye
franklin winnie funny you ask, I’m dropping them plus some new ones this week
omg thank you. you made my beats so much better as a starting rookie. it would take me forever to make a beat..
Happy to hear you're improving! Keep at it my friend. It only gets easier. No one ever gets worse.
Thank u bro
? ? Thanks for watching and commenting 💯🙏🏽
If we're putting a dark melody similar to these over a chord progression should we be avoiding the same notes in our chords that were avoiding in our melodies? For example in major we avoid 3 down or 4 up from the root should we be avoiding 3 down or 4 up in our chords as well?
So when you go to add 808s to these melodies are you putting them on G the original root note? or on the note that you start the melody on?
The root note is a great place to start. But it's not what I always start with. But yeah, typically the first chord's root note is what you'll go with and progress with the roots of each chord. But you'll want to make things more interesting than that. But still, that's def a great place to start when you're coming up with your basslines.
Top demais 😀😃
@ InflightMuzik is there any notes to avoid in hormonic minor scale it might went over my head?
Nah
You should upload your fl project but great video as always
You are 100% right! I'll see what I can do. I'll try to upload a dropbox link to it today. The piano is just FL keys so the FLP should work for everyone with FL 20. I'll add the midi too so people with older versions and still use that. Looks like yall might have 12 royaltee free loops by the end of the day! (Plus the chord progression at the end). Good call not edwards, and Happy Thanksgiving!

@@Inflightmuzik Happy Thanks Givings bro thank u
Plz drop next tutorial aboiut Melodic minor.,
Baby Lion Baby Lion why?
Sorry brotha.
bro post this inn r/ flstudio 🙌🔥🔥
Steak Taco Beats someone already did. It was at 120 upvotes last I saw 😁💪
Those major melodies were the hardest 👀
Thatcher I put a little more effort into those since I started off the tutorial with them haha

I always tried to analyze darkness, what is it that makes melodies dark? In the most of the time I ended in Sad melodies, but not dark, I want to thank you a lot, it is so simple but a game changer for me.
Er2OnDaTrack happy to help!
Can you make a video on Pierre Bourne/ Playboi Carti's Style?
I will be looking forward to your upcoming videos for sure!
you are awesome bro! me and my group of 20 producers and growing would like to ask you to. Do this video as a remake but add the chords to these dark scales or notes. plz! And could you also do a video on sound selection on instruments that go together for trap music. We think everyone else on youtube just arent talented enough to teach like you do. To be honest we think they slurp! off of your videos to get subs. but they fail. plz do these videos bra thx. From SMB Productions. We are here to hang wit ya!
i do plan on remaking this video and including a free midi kit with it. Coming soon! Sound selection/sound design is my next topic in a couple of weeks. I still have some other videos I have to finish up first
@@Inflightmuzik Bra their is none on your level of teaching and mind power. Real is real!!!
Man you got us trippin over here. We love your teaching!!! plz do a video were you show the chords used in metro boomin scale lex scale drake scale ect. This will give us the chance to create our own style progressions based on the scales they use from the already working scales/chords
used in modern music on the billboard charts...
@@stacystacksbeats999 That's a myth. Watch my first two youtube videos on this channel to understand why. There is no special scale.
So what your saying is that if your in the key of “G” for example. You avoid “G” and use all the other notes in that scale?
Inflightmuzik I’m just not grasping the whole counting thing. I’ll watch it over again i guess
Quatro Flamez just count the white keys moving up and down the piano roll in FL or on your keyboard. Example: A is one note below B. You can also go 6 up to play A in the next octave.
Man What about Chords? Shoudn't I use A and D note? When I plat Chord in E natural mino scale?
Dogeness Beats especially for chords, don’t use A major when in the e minor scale. It’s the brightest happiest chord in e minor. Can you make it work? Sure, just harder to pull off if you want to keep things dark.
@@Inflightmuzik Thanks Man. Thanks for your sincere comment. And you always inspire me and my music. Keep balling and Put in work man. I support you!
@@Inflightmuzik I love your channel and subbed already.

How are you counting these notes? Are you skipping the black keys? What if my root note is a Black key?
R3 goham Only count using the notes in the scale. Turning on scale highlighter will show you which notes are in the scale. You count starting from the root note. I’m going to drop another video on this once we hit 1k subs with some midi that you can use as ghost notes so you don’t have to worry about counting anymore. Hope this helps in the meantime my dude!
