I’ve been watching your videos over and over these past few days and I have to say I’m learning a lot. I’m still trying to fully grasp the concept of your dark melodies video (which is the one I watch the most btw) to where I know what keys to avoid for each scale I play to keep things dark. As a matter of fact, I’m about to watch the video again lol..... Thanks for sharing your knowledge and I appreciate you for some dope tutorials. 1
Thanks for watching (multiple times lol). I actually included the project files with the midi in the description of the dark melodies video if you want to DL that to help you out. That way you can pick whatever scale your in (major, minor, phrygian, harmonic minor) and just use the midi as ghost notes. I color coordinated the notes you don't use in red and the best notes to start on in blue. There are project notes that pop up when you open the file in FL Studio that gives you more details about the project for ya as well. Hope that helps! Let me know if you think I should do a video on how to use the project files...I'm thinking I need to.
Here’s the crazy part. I don’t even use FL Studio. However, what’re you’re teaching still applies. Also, I’m positive the midi files will prove to be more than helpful to me. I’m about to go and download it now. For some reason I just didn’t know you incorporated midi files. 🤦🏾♂️ Anyway, I’ll let you know how I fair with it and yes you should make a video showing people how to use the files because I’m positve there’s people like me that can use all the help possible!!! Thanks again!!
Digga Din Ok, I’ll do a new one with updated midi for people who don’t use FL as well. The midi in the one you’re about to DL won’t be color coordinated for you so it won’t make sense haha. The best you can use are the ones labeled by the scale type (minor, major, phyrigian, harmonic minor) with the number next to them. These are the melodies I made in the video. You can basically just use those notes and make your own dark melodies. You can move the midi anywhere on the piano roll in your daw and it will work as long as you stick to those notes. Keep in mind which note I used to start the melody with, but experiment by starting your melodies with any of the other notes in the midi pattern if you’d like. Again, if you stick with the notes in those patterns you’ll be fine no matter where you place that pattern on the piano roll.
Ok. I’m glad you gave me more to go on because I definitely looked at the midi files confused. Lol. But because of the files with the numbers it makes sense to me. I’ll still be on the look out for when you make the midi files for the people that don’t use FL such as myself lol... The files you gave is definitely enough to run with tho. Thanks again!!!
Direll Collins For most people it goes straight to their email, but check your promotions and junk folder too just in case it ended up there. If not, let me know what your email is and I’ll send it to you manually for ya.
InFlight Kudos man, I really appreciate this approach of explaining chords. Showing multiple examples. Don't know if you were the first to take this approach but definitely the first place I ever seen it. #DefGoodLearn #WheniSubscribed
Thanks. I'm self taught. Everything I show you guys are things that I came up with on my own (obviously not plugins). Especially when it comes to music theory, I do my best to explain things to people who don't know or understand music theory because that's literally how I learned music myself. Eventually I did go to college and learn, but I always found my own way was the best for my style of music. Maybe if youtube existed when I got started, it would be a different story. I started making music a little before Google was even invented so I did things the old fashioned way...read the manual and played piano for multiple hours, everyday after school.
Happy to hear someone found it useful! In later videos, I go into extra details about each gem on the gem counter. I find it's a good way to re-emphasize the points I'm making for you.
this is exactly what i was looking for most channels say do this or do that but dont tell u what kinds types or variety of chord progression can be done i would say themes to the chord progression very helpful
Finally a channel that I’ve been looking for. I still struggle to this day. I hope the info on your channel will help. I haven’t gone through your videos but do you have any videos on how to move the music along meaning you have your initial idea then you move into the chorus and then go into a verse?
@@Inflightmuzik thanks learned a loth, not only about dark melodies but specially about keys and scales , and your fun to watch... complimented ☝🏼💯 keep on doin this..
theke Yeah I learned traditional theory AFTER I taught myself piano. And when I finally decided to, I quickly realized the way I taught myself was a better approach when it comes to making beats. Traditional theory is more for reading and writing sheet music, not using a piano roll. Two very different beasts.
@James Yet, here we are with plenty of people who learned traditional theory, and can play circles around me on a piano, but still aren't consistently making music that people enjoy on a higher level. People forget that 1. Music came before music theory. 2. Music theory is a starting point, not an end all, be all. 3. Every individual has different talents and abilities. 4. Most importantly, people, as individuals thrive by learning the ways they learn best. Some people are visual learners, some people learn by ear, others learn better in a classroom setting. I will always encourage people to learn traditional music theory to expand their possibilities as I did in college. But I'm not going to pretend that's the answer to them making a hit record. We have more examples of that not being the case than the other way around, especially in the newer genres and the age of DAWs. Different styles and different tools tend to call for a new education system. Again, I recommend learning traditional theory.
I dont remember but looking at the midi, I'd say it's 100% quantized. I don't think I would ever play on the grid like that even if I could every time lol.
So are you saying the first note that's under my root note thats outside of the scale is the note I want to use to get that harmonic minor or is it any note that's outside of the scale?
the note before the root note of any minor scale will get you harmonic minor by adding in that note. basically you're taking the 7th note of the minor scale and moving it up one note and using that note instead with the rest of the scale.
Thanks, but that’s not what I was implying but I can see how someone might think that. I specifically said @ 11:30 that we are incorporating harmonic minor with the scale, not just making harmonic minor. I have a video about actually making the harmonic scale in my first two videos though.
gotcha. I meant it more in the sense you are going to want to stay away from the natural 7 in the melody if you are playing a harmonic minor chord. I'm a guitar player so I see making a melody in the sense of a guitar improv solo, if that makes any sense
alex barmine Yes and no. Traditionally, sure. But I absolutely can create melodies on top of chords borrowed from harmonic minor with the added note and still use the 7th. It’s all about when you use it.
Lowering the root note of the I chord will put you into a harmonic minor scale. For example, when you play e minor while on the e minor scale, you would lower the root note “E” down a half step. From there you can still play the all of the other notes in the scale. If you ignore the 7th degree and incorporating what I said above then you’re playing a harmonic minor scale. Because these share so many of the same notes, you can easily switch between the two and it will sound good since they also incorporate a lot of the same chords.
Luis Matos that’s what trips people up. No formula required bro. There are only 7 notes to choose from. People get intimidated by looking at all the notes thinking there needs to be a formula other than knowing what 7 notes in the scale are allowed to be played. After that it’s literally trial and error. There can’t be a formula if you’re going to make a new song. If there was, how would you make a different melody? Especially when you only have 7 notes to play with. That means you only have to rely on 3 things. The pitch (what note you play) and timing (when you play the note) and duration (how long you hold a note). All of that is based on feeling. I never know what I’m going to play before I play it. I just start playing the notes in the scale with random timing and duration. Hard to sound bad if you do that tbh. You can make it as simple or as complicated you want, but at the end of the day you’re literally just playing what sounds good after what you played before it. Nothing too magical about that other than the nice surprise you get from being truly free with your musical choices within your restricted scale.
Luis Matos same concept for chords. Chords are just the 7 notes in the scale when you skip a note in between each note and play them together. From there you follow the concept above and in the video. You’ll quickly learn chord progressions that make sense. There are only 7 chords plus inversions when it comes to your triads. Most music is made with that. You can worry about 7ths etc after you learn your basic triad progressions. I would start by making all the different 4 chord progressions you can starting with the root chord.
@@Inflightmuzik Got it, thanks! I'll just come up with a chord progression naturally, then. But, I can't do the same for my melodies right? (I used to think my melodies and chords have to be in the same scale and I was using a piano scale helper so when I saw you using chords outside of the ones highlighted in my helper i freaked out lol)
@@Inflightmuzik Ah, got it. I managed to create a good sounding chord progression with what I learned from the video. I'm struggling to create a good melody on top of it because I was taught to always play within a scale (c minor for example). Do you ever use these types of scales on top of your chords for your melodies or do you just "go with the flow"? If you ever do, you have any videos on that? Thank you btw you've been very helpful. Trying to learn all of this as a beginner can be a little overwhelming
Hi really appreciate these videos ive learnt alot watching, but im confused. That chord you called a harmonic minor, isnt it a B major and B major first inverted chord?
Lirey472 feel free to time stamp the part you’re confused about. It’s possible I might have mis-named something. That’s why I don’t talk about music theory in that way...the name doesn’t matter as much as the sound it makes. In terms of harmonic minor, the is no “harmonic minor chord”. What I probably said or should have said was the chord is being borrowed from the harmonic minor scale. So when I say the chord is harmonic minor, I’m not saying that’s the name of the chord. I’m saying that’s where the chord came from because it doesn’t belong in the original minor or major scale we were playing in...it’s from harmonic minor. So when I’m using B major chord in e minor, the note d sharp does not belong in the scale. It belongs to e harmonic minor. Both scales share all the same note except 1, which allows you to smoothly transition between the two scales.
@@Lirey472 yep, the name of that chord is b maj. But because we are playing in e minor scale, playing that b major chord turns the scale into harmonic minor when we use that chord. The name of the chord doesn't change. It's still b major. Again, this is why I don't try to bog people down with music theory jargon. It doesn't matter. What matters is the technique and the result/sound.
I was under the impression that changing the base note of my chord would transform it to a harmonic minor chord, is it actually the the second note in the chord? sorry if this was clear in the video it went throught my head, I'll be rewatching it anyway..
No idea what you're talking about my friend. Either way, changing the base note doesn't = harmonic minor chord. Depends what chord you started with in the first place. But no, dropping the base note of a chord doesn't automatically mean harmonic minor. Honestly, this is why I stay away from using music theory jargon. Stop worrying about what it's called and worry more about whether it sounds good or not.
I think I know what you're asking -- the chord in the video (from low note to high) is D#, F#, B -- which IS a B major chord (B, D#, F# in root position), a chord made from the E Harmonic minor scale (the V chord in E minor). But the video is showing it in the "first inversion" in which the 3rd note of the chord is played as the lowest note in the chord.
MJF Productions nope, no idea why I said that. This is one of my oldest videos and really wasn’t the focus of the video at all though, just a mistake. Hopefully you understand the concept I’m applying here with your ears and visually on the piano roll. My apologies for the misnaming of that chord.
Tip:Play music in your background while your teaching. It fills the gaps of silence and makes it generally more fun. Also it subconsciously tells your listener who you are. For Example, Simon Servida channel has happy music going on in the background because he is a quirky guy. Just my humble opinion. Very Good Content bro especially since I know music theory.
As a pianist myself would love have a private convo with you about developing Trap melodies free hand 🖐 or on the piano 🎹 role editor pros and cons from a pianist perspective
Yeah I think a lot of people are wanting a "sad beat" tutorial. I'll get that out sometime soon for ya. For voicings just use the same notes in the chord in different octaves. I don't really have any other tips for that lol...just have fun and experiment.
You'll be fine. Just keep making music and you'll be less confused the more music you make. Just takes getting used to. No better remedy than making more music. Like you said...you're a beginner, this is how all beginner feel, so you're not alone.
Video request: It would be very helpful if you make a video where you talk about chord substitutions : diatonic and chromatic specially... Thank you for all the help man..!
abhistha chatterjee check out my latest dark chord progressions video I posted this past week. I briefly talk about diatonic chord substitution without mentioning it in terms of traditional music theory. Basically if you make a chord progression using chords that share the same notes, you’re using diatonic chord substitution. This helps the progression move along in a more harmoniously. What type of music are you making though? If you’re concerned about chromatic chord substitutions, you’re probably not making modern popular music. That’s more for jazz, gospel, etc. I don’t really cover those genres on this channel, but I still might do a video on it down the line because someone else requested it not too long ago. You’ll learn a lot by looking up modal interchange it you’re into chromatic chord substitution. Just the fact you even know what it is should have given you enough info to just do it if that’s something you’re interested in. Either way, modal interchange is the best starting point to get into using chords outside of the scale, which is what chromatic chord subbing is.
@@Inflightmuzik I think diatonic substitution is enough...thanks for the help tho...i totally understand the concept now...once can basically use diatonically substituted chords in the chorus part to add more energy and make it distinct as compared to the pre chorus...I did not apply that in person but read in some article about it but couldnt understand the concept at that time
@@Inflightmuzik ahah you good u made me understand the use of harmonic minor in any scale i use but naturally i was already attracted this sound b4 you proved it to me i made a beat from your 1st chords look alike and it sounds really hard
I'm just gonna leave it here: when I transposed chords that you're using in this video, I noticed that you have used the 7th "type of trap chord", which doesn't fit into any of the 6 "trap chords" mentioned in the previous video.. someone even asked if that "7th trap chord" can work and as we can see IT CAN (in the previous video you used Asus2 (as one of the 6 chords, but not Asus4 (which is the 7th chord)) 😂 this is why you should always break rules in music 😍 and also... these "trap chords" work great, but when you try to find their names, it gets complicated 😜
Yeah for sure. The other video is for making darker beats if we are taking about the same video. Like you said, breaking rules can help you find new things in music
HipHopwav all major and minor scales have exactly the same number of semitones. The only one that is used (much more rarely) is harmonic minor, which I do recommend for a darker sound, so in that sense, you’re right. I just don’t want people looking for weird scales with a bunch of semitones like Arabic scale. That isn’t going to sound more trap. Most trap beats are just the minor scale. So it’s how you use the scale more than anything. Use the semitones in the scale often in the melody for a darker sound. No need to search for a different scale

Digga Din For sure! Yeah, the new midi I give you will be more straight forward.
Exactly what I was looking for !!!

I started making music a little before Google was even invented so I did things the old fashioned way...read the manual and played piano for multiple hours, everyday after school.
thank you for sharing this, you have no idea how many people enlighten by your videos :)

this is it fr fuck learning classical theory that shit comes later you got the right idea g
theke Yeah I learned traditional theory AFTER I taught myself piano. And when I finally decided to, I quickly realized the way I taught myself was a better approach when it comes to making beats. Traditional theory is more for reading and writing sheet music, not using a piano roll. Two very different beasts.
yeah im classically trained and it definitely helps but learning how to apply it to trap music is a whole different game i had to learn that on my own
@James Yet, here we are with plenty of people who learned traditional theory, and can play circles around me on a piano, but still aren't consistently making music that people enjoy on a higher level.
James Right on James 💯
Did you quantize or did you perfectly play these...just a random question
I dont remember but looking at the midi, I'd say it's 100% quantized. I don't think I would ever play on the grid like that even if I could every time lol.
Checking this out in 2022
sinceridade seus videos são bacana demais, valeu!!
So are you saying the first note that's under my root note thats outside of the scale is the note I want to use to get that harmonic minor or is it any note that's outside of the scale?
the note before the root note of any minor scale will get you harmonic minor by adding in that note. basically you're taking the 7th note of the minor scale and moving it up one note and using that note instead with the rest of the scale.
great video!!
Thanks Luca! I appreciate you for watching. I have a lot more on the way if you want to subscribe and hit that notification bell! Take care my friend.
This beat is incredible
harmonic minor isn't adding a note into the scale, its raising one of the notes from the minor (to a sharp 7th). just to clarify 11:45ish
Thanks, but that’s not what I was implying but I can see how someone might think that. I specifically said @ 11:30 that we are incorporating harmonic minor with the scale, not just making harmonic minor. I have a video about actually making the harmonic scale in my first two videos though.
I also reemphasize this @ 13:25. This is not just playing harmonic minor. This is a technique to borrow a note from that scale for trap.
Will any minor chord become harmonic minor chord if we lower the 3rd degree halfstep ??
Lowering the root note of the I chord will put you into a harmonic minor scale. For example, when you play e minor while on the e minor scale, you would lower the root note “E” down a half step. From there you can still play the all of the other notes in the scale. If you ignore the 7th degree and incorporating what I said above then you’re playing a harmonic minor scale. Because these share so many of the same notes, you can easily switch between the two and it will sound good since they also incorporate a lot of the same chords.
You can also think about it like this. Just raise the 7th degree or any minor scale by a half step and you’ll have harmonic minor.
@@Inflightmuzik wow thanku so much bro for taking time to reply me .

No problem! Happy to help!
Forcing it 🔥💯
What I don’t understand is how you choose the keys you’re going to play. Do you pick a scale and invert the chords or what?
Luis Matos my first reply was 100% about melodies. My second reply was about chords 😉
@@Inflightmuzik My bad, the part i was talking was at 14:05
@@Lirey472 yep, the name of that chord is b maj.
@@Inflightmuzik Nice one, yeah I understand 👌 thanks for the reply and keep up the excellent content.

What scale is this in?
Eminor
@@Inflightmuzik thanks I'm still learning my scales lmao n thanks for the vid too it helped alot
U really wanna tell me that this a-minor chord At min 14:00 is a major chord ?
MJF Productions nope, no idea why I said that. This is one of my oldest videos and really wasn’t the focus of the video at all though, just a mistake. Hopefully you understand the concept I’m applying here with your ears and visually on the piano roll. My apologies for the misnaming of that chord.

Tip:Play music in your background while your teaching. It fills the gaps of silence and makes it generally more fun. Also it subconsciously tells your listener who you are. Video request:
It would be very helpful if you make a video where you talk about chord substitutions : diatonic and chromatic specially...

Martini Records That’s awesome man. Makes me really happy to hear you putting these to use!
Semi tone is huge the more semi tones in a scale the more "trap" its gonna sound
