That "weird" chord that he asked you not to use at 4:35 is called a diminished chord and is very much part of the major key. Specifically this was a Bdim in the key of C. You certainly can use it to make your chord progressions sound more interesting, especially if you use it in between chords for a short duration to create tension. However, I do get why Arcade asked you not to use it because it can sound quite dissonant and it can be hard for beginners to use it in the right context. But it is definitely not out of key.

another useful (but optional) tip for any beginners that may be reading this: if your bass notes sound kinda basic, try veering away from using only the “root notes” of the chords. so if it’s the universal C major chord, maybe use an E as the bass note instead of a C it creates a more complex sound. if i didn’t explain that the best, just look up “slash chords” and google should explain it for you lol. but also try to keeping mind that “complex” isn’t always better
This is such a good tutorial for beginners. You want to be basically be told the minimum amount of information to get things going and not be overwhelemed, but which still has wide applications. You've given pepople options without overwhelming them
chord codes: count using the keys, count from the tonic (root chord which is the bass note he is talking about), the tonic (root) being 0, including the black keys, so for example, to make a major chord, count from the tonic, 0, then up to 4, then up to 7, that's how you'll be able to create a major chord. Minor: 0-3-7 Major: 0-4-7 Maj7: 0-4-7-11 Min7: 0-3-7-10 Aug: 0-4-8 Dim:0-3-6

I'm not even mad because of the "no music theory needed" question. That's a constant question in the music community, especially since the music composition with computer had been popular, and everyone wants to be a producer, or a beatmaker. That's not a bad thing. It's very godd that more people can open their possibilities with music. And the long question of "Do I need music theory" with purist answering like "hell yeah if not you're not deserving anything, learn the rules of the art you making" and the others like "hell no, music is music, whatever the tool or way you make it". It's 2022 we know this question now. And it's a boring one, we don't care anymore. Or less care tbh. BUT. Despite the question of the theory, it's for me mostly a matter of inspiration. All of these videos, like millions on RUclips now, on "How to make a good chord progression" "Instant secrets for better melodies" etc that's cool and all but for me the worst thing about it is the exemple given to the beginners about inspiration. All of this are what I call "Mouse composing". That's; creating your melody, chords progression of drums or whatever, just by dragging random notes on the piano roll, either wishing it will sound good or already knowing it will sound good because of the scale highlight. The scale highlight isn't a bad thing, I adore it. But with those examples it's used like "On those highlights, choose any note it will sound good" and you choose a random bass line, create a chord with it etc. I hope I'm not looking like the old boring purist because I'm not. I' m just wishing the best creative journey for every producer and for me our Era doesn't kill the music because of the music theory or not, but because of the mouse composing. You composé with your mouse, or at least your eyes, on the piano roll, and not with your inspiration. Yes with this, you can create 100 different melodies each day, but never a melody that you thought about. And for me that's the core of music, not the music theory, but the inspiration, like for every art form. I'm not talking for you Arcade, you are an experienced musician, you're not concerned. But the way we teach music on DAW nowadays is for me bad. Not because of the theory but because we're not motivating others to have inspiration. Add the fact that if you want to be a beatmaker for exemple you're encouraged to post 78 beat everyday to be popular... Don't misunderstand me, you really can create some amazing music with mouse composing, but it's juste like if a computer did it itself. By doing this you're acting like a computer, without soul. Tha'ts not for blaming y'all doing this, again I'm wishing the best journey for all of you. But just a tiny but strong advice, try composing with your soul. Knowing those basics are very good to know if your ear doesn't makes you create a bad chord, but try to first imagine your sound, and then painting it on piano roll and not first painting it and then check if it's not bad. Best wishes to all of you mates. Love.
I don’t want to sound elitist or like an asshole but, I don’t think there’s such a thing as a “bad” chord progression. All music, no matter what you think of it will have someone who enjoys it, and a lot of chord progressions can be used anywhere. This isn’t to sound like “oh you’re wrong” but I feel that it gives a bad mindset to aspiring musicians who only see things they don’t like in music as “bad”. It’s still a resourceful video and it adds a lot into how to develop your chord progressions but I wouldn’t call them bad from the get-go.
This is literally the most informative video on music creation in the history of all music creation videos. So much information packed into such a short video and absolutely easy to grasp.
This is a very great video and will help me and a lot of other beginners. Thanks Arcade! Keep up the good work! (Also when is the next Stock Plugins tutorial coming? They are really great 😁)
really basic method is to add strings playing your chord progression, with maybe some new melodies, then add those dramatic taiko drums. also some subtle synths for atmosphere.
I've had FL Studio for a while but never knew about this feature! Thanks. Really helpful demo and explanation. (And the short composition at the end showed what can be built when using well-formed chords!)
Information gathered: ()Don’t Use the dark lines. But there are exceptions ()Notes have relations such as B5 and B4 one is higher which is the higher number and one is deeper which is the lower number. ()Add multiple musical notes in the same region to further advance music quality. ()Add extra melodies to give more detail
Something that works for me, I just play by ear. Double the length to 8 bars and copy and paste to double the length (from 4 bars to 8), then go and change the third note or the 6th note to something unexpected, then on the final note add a quick note change right before the 8 bars start over at the end of the 8th bar. You can leave the chords as is and it will create a new sort of harmony/dissonance type of thing that really adds depth to the song. You don't have to stick to the notes in the chords as long as the "wrong" note moves to the right note at some point. Like if you're making a lead melody to follow the chords, you can sometimes use the notes of the previous or next chord so that when it changes it will make sense. Hard to explain what I mean without visuals, but if you know what i'm saying it should help you a lot. Also copy and paste the basic chords and layer more instruments, add an arpeggio with the same exact chords unchanged and see how it sounds. Then you can chop the chords up and try other things. It's easier to make a bunch of these alternate instruments at the start, and just hold on to them for later to see what you can do with them. Delay and reverb can turn a "meh" instrument into something that sounds great so don't forget that if you skip over a lot of sounds you wouldn't consider using. Try them with effects or play with the cutoff and see how they sound to you. Find a good amount of sounds that you like and remember them, a lot of artists reuse drum sounds/synths, that's how they get their "signature sound".
Honestly this is a very detrimental way to teach about chords; Dumbing it down to "what is allowed?" and "things to avoid" is just very off-putting. Trying to skip learning theory is never going to be a good thing for your music-making, no matter how much you may hate the theory itself. There is no right or wrong in music; only guidelines to help you. Scales can be altered and you can "borrow" notes from other scales to simulate an urge for movement in the progression. There are things called modes too, such as dorian or lydian. I'd suggest for people watching this to rather try slowly building a repertoire of theory instead of trying to take shortcuts like this.
Overall the tutorial is useful. But it is extremely basic and doesn't really cover anything about chord progressions that work. This tutorial also has some none sense in it. One can use diminished chords obviously. The B chord is called a diminished chord. It does create tension, but sometimes maybe one wants this. Obviously rhythmically what was done here is the absolute bore. The soft piano in the end sounds like crap really, sorry.
I feel bad saying this, but as someone with a lot of knowledge on music theory, and even just making chord progressions in general: Pretty much every part of this video is fundamentally wrong. I totally get that this might be useful to beginners, but learning these sorts of music 'hacks' will just hurt their learning in the long run. Seriously - there is no way to magically make music without learning music theory (which is actually a lot easier and more interesting than people think)
this isnt "how to write a chord progression" this is "how to make novice level very basic chords" this barely goes over the most basic of stuff and most of the stuff it goes over it gets wrong anyway
I figure out things by patterns, so you breaking down this in 2/3 spaces really helped. also, i didnt realize my daw had the same dark spaces to not use the notes so thank you!
you are very good at teaching stuff even with the accent i havent made beats in 3 years and had no pc for 3 years recently started making beats again and couldnt make a melody if my life depended on it thank you

This is the best tutorial I have found when it comes to chords. Thank you!
1:25 Little tip here. Click right mouse button on the scale instead of left so that the menu stays there and you can change the rote note too ;)
Awesome, I wondered if that's possible 👌 thanks!
@@ArcadeFL No problem! I'm glad it helped.
I had a bad week and the song result at the end gave me hope that things will get better and it made me cry
“No music theory needed!”
*proceeds to teach the fundamentals of music theory*
Well its just counting numbers on a grid 😁
The title is definitely NOT clickbait. Excellent video. Thank you.
This is literally the most informative video on music creation in the history of all music creation videos. So much information packed into such a short video and absolutely easy to grasp.

Thank you so much. This tutorial was great and you really made it easy for me to understand 💖❤️💖
Can you show us a tutorial of how you made that final demo song? That was pretty amazing. I've always wanted to make such orchestral music
^^^
really basic method is to add strings playing your chord progression, with maybe some new melodies, then add those dramatic taiko drums. also some subtle synths for atmosphere.
Yeah that sounded majestic...tutorial please
I like a person who only says what exactly is needed, not a word more.
Hey mann! Your FL skill is sleek and elegant! Your musical expression is superb!!
didnt know bout inverting the chords, that was awesome to learn cus i been struggling with chords

Thanks. Really helpful demo and explanation.
(And the short composition at the end showed what can be built when using well-formed chords!)
Never thought someone could ever help me this much.. Thank you

Information gathered:
()Don’t Use the dark lines. But there are exceptions
()Notes have relations such as B5 and B4 one is higher which is the higher number and one is deeper which is the lower number.
Guys, just learn music theory, it’s less confusing
Wanna teach me?
Just look up simple tutorials, you'd be ready to go in 30 minutes
thanks man best chord progression tutorial 2 yrs later
Agreed. But, he didn't even dumb it down as dumb as it can go. And, some of it was incorrect, anyway.
Piano and pluck are my favourite 😍😍😍
Overall the tutorial is useful. But it is extremely basic and doesn't really cover anything about chord progressions that work. This tutorial also has some none sense in it. One can use diminished chords obviously. The B chord is called a diminished chord. It does create tension, but sometimes maybe one wants this. Obviously rhythmically what was done here is the absolute bore. The soft piano in the end sounds like crap really, sorry.
for those who want it simpler for placing chord
in any key, put the bass note first
then, skip one note, then place another note, skip, and place
I feel bad saying this, but as someone with a lot of knowledge on music theory, and even just making chord progressions in general: Pretty much every part of this video is fundamentally wrong. I totally get that this might be useful to beginners, but learning these sorts of music 'hacks' will just hurt their learning in the long run. Seriously - there is no way to magically make music without learning music theory (which is actually a lot easier and more interesting than people think)
New FL Studio Producer looking for advice on my new beat --- ruclips.net/video/zP0U8lJCXpU/видео.html&ab_channel=jjbeats
You are a treasure for that piano instrument ❤️
this isnt "how to write a chord progression" this is "how to make novice level very basic chords" this barely goes over the most basic of stuff and most of the stuff it goes over it gets wrong anyway
My buddy is going to love this!
Thx!

좋은 코드를 만드는 방법. 2:3는 메이저고 3:2는 마이너임. +-1을 하면 좀 매운맛을 만들 수 있음. 볼륨을 조절할 수도 있고. 하이라이트 된 것만 선택하기.
You have just blessed me...I have been looking for this to be explained simply like this....Wow!!
Bro tanks a lot you are helping me a lot with your vids ❤
