I cannot thank you enough for doing this interview and introducing me to James' book Color & Light. I recently purchased it based on your recommendation, and FINALLY it all makes sense. One more piece to the puzzle. I'm excited to see where this new information will take me on my artistic journey!

Whenever I am asked to name artists that have influenced me, James Gurney is at the top of the list. He can draw and paint anything that's in front of him. I want to be able to do that! I own many of his books, including, "The Artists guide to Sketching". Have reread his books many times and always learn something from them. Thanks for doing this interview. JG is a gracious man and so generous with his knowledge. He is a 21st century master.

Such a great episode! RUclips just autoplayed to it or I never would have clicked it (I am terribly unsophisticated to the art world). But I found this to be a really fun conversation to observe, and I have learned so much. I have a stereotypical impression of art world as stuffy and haughty, but folks like this make me feel so much less intimidated and more at ease with experimenting. Thanks again for such an accessible vlog!

I think the questions were awesome in this interview. Obviously knew a. It about the artist and also let him answer in his own words.

The stars aligned, it's a cosmic wonder ... yesterday, at my pharmacy of all places, someone placed a stack of gently used books. I was soon flipping through a book about a world where humans and dinosaurs coexist and I found the illustrations to be both beautiful and incredibly accurate. I paid for "Dinotopia, Journey to Chandara" and soon I was amazed to find this artist spotlight on your channel - with the talented James Gurney! Funny how life flows! I enjoyed this so much, especially the stories about his travels and friendship with the late, Thomas Kinkade. Thank you, it is a wonderful interview.

Thanks Cassie! I too found a Dinotopia book years ago in a used pile for about $5. He's an awesome artist but Marty nailed it when he mentioned Gurney's childlike fascination with literally everything. He's like a 10 year old in a 60+ body.

I was humbled by his lucidity and ability to absorb and reflect back on every element of his being, his gestalt if you will. He gives us the whole of who he is as a person, a partner, an observer, a scientist, teacher and philosopher. His sketch book is a treatise on how he's been affected and influenced by the actions and dynamics of everyone and everything around him, and they him.
James possesses the rare ability to understand and be able to communicate one's feelings and emotions and do it effortlessly. He's genuine. He's what good writing and great art are all about.

I've been a big Gurney fan for years, but had no idea he once traveled with Kinkade. It's certainly a blessing that his family can reminisce about their loved one with gentle souls like the Gurneys. With time, I hope more people will remember Mr. Kinkade in a favorable light, instead of the ugliness and scandal of the final years. He was not the first artist to lose his way. This makes me appreciate Mr. and Mrs. Gurney's kindness to Kinkade's daughter all the more.

The part about the supermarket door reminded me of a Brasilian painter called Rodrigo Yudi Honda, he paints typically common buildings and objects from Brazil (my country). They're things no one normally thinks of painting, but we can relate to them, they're familiar to us and can either be nostalgic too. There is a poetic language to the ordinary urban modern life. These days, they can touch us in a way that landscapes we can never see but on the computer or on vacation, can't do. This is our world. Our life. An artist taking a careful look and carefully portraying such things touch us and inspire us to really look at the things around us.
Anyway, long babbling over, this was an amazing interview! I admire both your channel and James Gurneys. And I'm glad to have met Marty, so I now can check his channel too!

Hey thanks for noticing that Katherine. I spent a month researching Mr. Gurney and his work, and Steve have been following him for years. Steve was the one who told me about James.

Hey Steve, I truly enjoyed this interview, Mr. Gurney gave some great advice especially for me as upcoming artist and RUclipsr. Enjoyed the questions that yourself and Marty asked. It was just a nice relaxing time for me. Listening to this interview and colouring with watercolour pencils on a piece a did earlier in the morning.

44:15 Whoa...... that was wild, the painting came to life!! I love that!! I have no idea how he did it, but it shows how realistic it is.

Thank you for this interview, Steve and Marty. What an inspiration to watch James Gurney. You really pulled a lot of gems out of him with your questions. (And I need to look up that quote at 45:55 Steve. Maybe put it in the video comments?) I could have listened for another hour! James just got a new fan.
VERY bummed about Dover. 😢 Come on everybody, let’s buy some books!!

What a great interview! I've dabbled with gouache but after seeing James' work and especially the en plein air sketches...I know where I'm headed for some practice. Thanks all three of you!
