I love this. I also love the big puddle of grey in the bottom of the pan that can be used to do a separate monochromatic painting that isn’t exactly monochromatic.
Green Gold i one of my favourite colours. Learned about it from your videos when I started watercolour years ago. I still consider it a yellow though, and it mixes like a yellow colour. It creates beautiful transparent skin tones, rusts and browns with perylene maroon, my other favourite colour. This mix can substitute the likes of burnt sienna. More orangy mixes with reds and coral reds if mixed with magenta. With violet it replaces umber colours. When mixed with turquoise colour and diluted with water you get a fresh, minty sea foam colour. It just looks good mixed with anything. When I learned how to mix colours I made mini mixing charts for every colour combination I had, and often I put down 3-4 swatches between the same pairing, because the range of mixed tones is so wide and varied.
My goodness the variety of possibilities for colors. Absolutely beautiful and amazing at the vibrant colors that I would have never thought about. I am still learning how to go about with mixing and playing with the colors and paint. You bring a lot of experience and fun to painting & your teaching/sharing techniques. On the tray all I saw was underwater panda 🙏🌊🔱🌪🌪🌪 started a rooftop drawing,,some of what I saw in all that watered color should land perfectly in certain spots 🙏 thank you, such a mint mix of colors you got there
I usually use ultramarine as a base for my greens, because I like the granulation, but this has inspired me to be more adventurous! Plus doing a painting like this is much more fun than painting colour grids/charts! 😊

Even though I haven’t set up my palette yet you have me thinking about colors. This morning I painted a bell. The first layer was an ochre. The second layer was a reddish brown. The third while the brown was still damp was ultra marine blue. Where it mixed with the brown they neutralized each other and made the dark areas for me…. I like all the greens from this demo, ( plus your new wonderful fine tip brush) for me I think I would need a little more info on the chart. (this + this = makes ___) until my mind says what I can use automatically. Thanks Steve, it’s safe to say, color could never be boring. This set will be a great addition.
Thanks Essie! As a tip, a color wheel is a quicker, easier (I think) short-hand version of using a chart to determine what+what=what. Charts, especially large ones, are difficult to reference sometimes.
I learn something of value from each video I watch. Thank you for introducing me to M. Graham paints. My order just arrived and I treated myself to a Neptune brush. I started with watercolor when the pandemic began (I had painted in acrylic and dabbled in oils years ago). My new supplies are amazing! (not sure if I will want to use my other paints for a while) Painting with the Neptune brush I feel like a ballroom dancer gliding across the floor! Can't get enough! waiting for a sale so I can get a few more brushes. Also can't wait for our Canadian stores to get inventory of M.Graham as ordering directly from the US is a 3x-4x price difference... so there are a few key colors that I am waiting for. Congratulations on your new set!
It wasn't until I got W/N Green Gold that I realized that Azo Green = Green Gold, because it is almost identical to my MGraham Azo Green. DS Green Gold is sort of a slightly odd ball shade lol. Whatever it's called, you made me love using it :)

Your enthusiasm is palpable and infectious (prob. too soon post Covid for that adjective :-0) Its pretty overwhelming for the beginner like myself -- the number of color possibilities is mind-bending - so, in my humble opinion, you should feel free to repeat stuff like this any time you have an open slot in your RUclips Idea Reserve! This is nothing to do with the subject of the video but if you pause the video at 4:11 I see the paint puddles making a blue angel and a man with what looks like a sword in his belt. 😊 Dioxozine purple is a magnificent colour. I think I have a very similar colour somewhere in my already varied paint collection, but if not, I may invest in this colour. 😊 Being more imaginative with a limited palette is something I really need to learn, if only for the benefit of my wallet! 🤣😇
Omigosh! This is so beautiful. So, how many butcher trays do you own? I'd need to build a new addition to the house to hold them all if I let myself get started on this. I wouldn't be able to wipe up the left over paint to start with new shades, there is too much beauty there to allow it to go to waste :)

It runs smaller than the black velvet, and has a bit of spring. To my surprise, I loved it. Just wondering if you tried one - it carried the water as did my black velvet, and is quite a bit cheaper. Time will reveal how the brush works overall. She bought it at Hobby Lobby.)

If I could afford I would totally support you, but the price of this palette is well over $150.00 (Belize Dollars) which is a steep price at this time. Ever consider half pans or better quarter pans for those that live in poorer countries like me?
If anyone on limited budget, mainly spend on 100% cotton paper. Steve mentioned this in a video long time ago. Paints aren’t very important as long as artist grade paints. You can choose the colors he says (he has a 8 fav color video years ago, and skip the Payne’s grey and sepia coz neutrals can be mixed). And choose other artist brands that are cheaper locally (mine is Holbein). Just getting three to four colors are enough usually. I recommend a cool red, medium blue and cool-midtone yellow Cool red for mixing purples with blue, and cool yellow for mixing greens with blue I use Quin red, ultramarine light, quin gold (warm yellow) and lemon yellow Sometimes I use indanthrone blue for deep tones To reduce vibrancy mix a color on opposite color wheel
This is great! I have all of those colors. I'm going to play! Does M Graham still use honey as their binder? All of my tubes say gum arabic. I didn't know they switched.
They didn't switch. They use both. Honey isn't primarily the binder. It's used as a humicant to keep the paints moist, and facilitate better pigments loads.

How about a video about painting bricks? I use many colors like orange, lunar red earth, yellow, reds, grays, since fired red bricks have so many shades. I know this because as a ceramic artists, where the bricks are in the kiln during firing changes their color..thanks..
I bought a majelo pallette too....does yours seem to have the seal kind of not meeting as well at the hinge side? I think mine might have come bent or something....doesnt seem quite right

I had a thought. Well a couple of thoughts. I am able to reproduce the colors that I see in your video. That is, when I try to reproduce the color shade that you show in your video, I am able to do so but with some trial and error. I'm not sure how much of one color to mix into another. Usually, I am too heavy handed, and add too much of the second color, and the color I produce is accordingly much darker than the one you show. Maybe that is a good thing, since it forces me to experiment to reproduce the shade you are displaying. But my monitor is an old Apple Cinema monitor, now about 7 years old. It is pretty much time to replace the monitor. I wonder what monitors will offer the best rendering of color shades in general -- of the exact color you intended to show in your videos. If you are doing a particular shade of azo green mixed with another green, for example, will a curved IPS type monitor show that shade better than my current monitor? I realize that is a tough question so do not feel you have to answer it. It is more of a question for the manufacturer of the display. I'm really mentioning it only because this thought occurred to me now. And I'm planning to replace my monitor anyhow when I find the perfect one, no doubt after much searching.
Your current Apple monitor is probably an older LCD form. The newer LED or OLED technologies are definite improvements for color and clarity. Samsung or LG are usually good bets for brand. If I'm not mistaken IPS monitors are a newer form of LCD technology. Good but, I've never personally seen a big advantage to them or curved displays either for image or video color accuracy. Continue with your research though, you may find a better answer.
does the honey in m. graham paints attract bees during plein air or ants during storage? anyone have any experience? i've only ever used gum-arabic based watercolors
No, but don't leave your palette open while not using. I found dust settled on my trays over time when the furnace comes on, or if the window is open. ( Even though not visible to me) plus the cat walking over my paint area, not a good combination with sticky paint!
I have both M. Graham Phthalo Green BS and Viridian. Viridian granulates more and lifts easier than PGBS. The M. Graham Viridian single pigment PG18 is the best one on the market and in comparisons always picked as the best among other Viridian(s). Did you pick the PGBS because of its tinting strength compared to Viridian or because it does not granulate? Thank you for all of your informative videos.
Yes, as long as all the colors in the mix are transparent. Keep in mind though no pigment is truly 100% transparent. However, one of the beauties of M. Graham is their almost unmatched intensity which actually aids in more transparency because the tints are stronger and can be mixed thinner. More water means more even transparency.
I have a quick question about mixing colors - not specifically related to this video. Among the primary reds, is there any appreciable difference between M. Graham pyrrole red and quinacridone red? Is either more true or pure? How do they perform in mixes and shading? Is either one your preference?
Not significant difference. They are going to perform about the same. Both are nice reds. I personally lean to the Quin Red. It's slightly more transparent. Both are pure single pigment colors.
Helo! I recently discovered your channel and found it excellent. I'm already registered and following your initial classes that are helping me a lot, however, I'm from Brazil and I don't master your language fluently. Although Google translates some things strangely, I sometimes rely on the translation of subtitles in the video to understand some words or phrases. Some of your classes are appearing without subtitles (for example: Basic Watercolor Techniques 2, Basic Watercolor Techniques 3, among others) which is making it difficult for me to understand some parts of the videos. They are turned on but more accurate subtitles will not appear unless there is a translated script. I'm afraid I don't have the knowledge or resources to create those.

Warm and cool colours are relative based on your choice of colours that you select for your palette. What may represent a warm colour on your palette could be the cooler shade of the colour on someone else’s palette due to colour choices. Dr Oto Kano has a video regarding warm and cool colours that you may find helpful, but it’s an older video so you may have to search. Hope this is helpful.
In the video, I get the impression that you are using different brushes for different colors on the Mijiello palette. So one brush for ultramarine blue, one for azo green, one for phthalocyanine green and so on. Is that correct? Or are you using the same brush for all the colors?

Yes I have a couple. Not a bad brush at all. I do still think the Black Velvets are better performers but its not a big difference.

Graham is their almost unmatched intensity which actually aids in more transparency because the tints are stronger and can be mixed thinner. More water means more even transparency.
I have a quick question about mixing colors - not specifically related to this video. Among the primary reds, is there any appreciable difference between M. Graham pyrrole red and quinacridone red? Is either more true or pure? How do they perform in mixes and shading? Is either one your preference?
Not significant difference. They are going to perform about the same. Both are nice reds. I personally lean to the Quin Red. It's slightly more transparent. Both are pure single pigment colors.

Although Google translates some things strangely, I sometimes rely on the translation of subtitles in the video to understand some words or phrases. Some of your classes are appearing without subtitles (for example: Basic Watercolor Techniques 2, Basic Watercolor Techniques 3, among others) which is making it difficult for me to understand some parts of the videos. Can you help me? I think you need to turn on subtitles in videos for them to be available.

They are turned on but more accurate subtitles will not appear unless there is a translated script. I'm afraid I don't have the knowledge or resources to create those.

Why do companies not tell you what is cool in the colors they offer Or what is warm in their colors?
Warm and cool colours are relative based on your choice of colours that you select for your palette. What may represent a warm colour on your palette could be the cooler shade of the colour on someone else’s palette due to colour choices. Dr Oto Kano has a video regarding warm and cool colours that you may find helpful, but it’s an older video so you may have to search. Hope this is helpful.

In the video, I get the impression that you are using different brushes for different colors on the Mijiello palette. So one brush for ultramarine blue, one for azo green, one for phthalocyanine green and so on. Is that correct? Or are you using the same brush for all the colors?
