Born in California in 1958, the son of a mechanical engineer, he taught himself to draw by reading books about the illustrators Norman Rockwell and Howard Pyle. He studied archaeology at the University of California at Berkeley, receiving a degree in anthropology with Phi Beta Kappa honors.
Prompted by a cross-country adventure on freight trains, he coauthored The Artist’s Guide to Sketching in 1982. During the same period, he worked as a background painter for the animated film Fire and Ice, co-produced by Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta.
His freelance illustration career began with paperback book covers, where he developed his characteristic realistic renderings of fantastic scenes, often using posed models and handmade maquettes for reference. His has worked on more than a dozen assignments for National Geographic magazine, painting reconstructions of Moche, Kushite, and Etruscan civilizations.
The inspiration that came from researching these scenes of ancient life led to a series of lost world paintings, including ”Dinosaur Parade” and ”Waterfall City.” With the encouragement of retired publishers Ian and Betty Ballantine, he committed two years’ time to writing and illustrating Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time, which was published in 1992.Solo exhibitions of his artwork have been presented at The Smithsonian Institution, The Norman Rockwell Museum, The Norton Museum of Art, The Delaware Art Museum, and other venues. He is a popular lecturer at art schools, movie studios and game companies, and he teaches occasional workshops. His book, Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter (2010) was Amazon’s #1 bestselling book on painting for over 52 weeks and is based on his daily blog gurneyjourney.blogspot.com.

James Gurney is a national treasure.
he’s a living legend in art.
James Gurney holds a special place to me as he was the first artist in my life to be kind enough to respond to a question I had years and years ago. Before I became an artist, I bought his color theory books and had a question about something. I was basically a kid. He was awesome enough to get back to me. I later met him in Montreal at a school I taught in. Was a pleasure. I can confirm James always sketches. We were at a resto with the atelier team, and he completed a sketch before the food even arrived.
This was THE BEST interview. Thank you
Thank you both, Jeff and James! Such an awesome conversation. I’m sure you hear it all the time, James, but you really are such an inspiration. I hope you feel some sense of fulfillment for your massive contributions to the artist community over the course of your career. It’s hard to think of many artists who have contributed such a body of educational content and shared it so generously. You are one of a kind, indeed. All the best from the Netherlands.
Interviewing one of the modern great artists! Excellent interview.
I love James Gurney...what a great conversation!!!
I'm so happy he showed his artwork at the end of the podcast! 😊 thank you both for the inspiration. It's truly a gift!
So glad you interviewed James Gurney. I’ve recommended is his book, Color and Light, to many of my students. Great podcast so I’ll be recommending this as well. Thanks for doing this.
Love James Gurney and his work :)
James Gurney is a national treasure. So are you Jeff for bringing us this interview. Thank you.
This was such a treat! Thanks to you both.
I was about to write a comment about James Gurney and this video when Jeff asked James at the end for one bit of advice… and James said to be “curious.” That, is how I was going to describe James; curious by nature, demonstrating one example after another of how he lived his life and career as reflected during this interview. Magnificent!!!
Thank you, Jeff.
Thank you for inviting this legend. Really appreciate the podcast overall as well.
Thanks for listening
I just love this guy and I’m immediately buying his books
James rocks! He is inspiration, quiet long lasting inspiration - thanks for having him....
What an awesome interview! Well done Jeff and James.
You have the best podcast. They are relaxing and so informative. ThankYou 😊
Thank you so much!
Thanks! Very enjoyable to watch!
Great interview broski 🤜🏻💥🤛🏻
Enjoying this so much. Great questions and answers. James looks so happy
Flash sketching is learned easily if you do as he says and just get some mileage based on faith. I love sketching people walking or jogging by.
This is so good. 4:30 in and James is dropping knowledge about clear cutting and the difference between then and now. Amazing artist and guy.
Loved it! Thank you both!
What a beautiful mind, a treasure indeed, thanks a lot!
He’s a gift.
Love the program, but this might be the best episode yet. Your questions were so good and so deep. Thanks Jeff, keep up the good work.
Thank you both for this amazing interview! I have watched and rewatched all James Gurney's videos, have studied his Color and Light book, and I never tire because there is always something new to learn. I hope to be able to buy all of his books. Fantastic artist and a great guy!
Glad you enjoyed it!
One of James best qualities (other than his amazing art abilities) is that he is is very open minded. He's not pretentious as most other artists are. Especially in his understanding that photography in of itself is an artform. and that photography and painting can coexist and don't take away from one another. All of which i got out of that small line when he said that wildlife paintings were and still are a big deal.
I agree about James, but have been so amazed by the lack of pretentiousness of nearly all of my guests. It seems that with maturity and life’s lessons most of the GREAT artists learn humility. I also think ego is often a mask for fear and insecurity. It’s easy for young artists to have big ones. I know I did 20 years ago.
So cool. I love to watch his videos and hear him talk. Thanks for the questions you asked I feel like I know him a bit better.
Thanks for having such a brilliant and insightful artist on the show!
Wow...Intelligent and technically precise!
another Great show Jeff.
Great conversation! The guy is the definition of curiosity and invention. And he seems like a really decent human being as well. That’s a rare combination of skills and traits these days.
Another great podcast. I buy all Gurney's gumroad videos just to hear him talk and watch him paint. It just makes life a better place. lol!
James Gurney is my hero. Thank you for the re-publishing of the Solomon J Solomon book, it's amazing.
I really wish to one day come to the States and meet these great teachers, who have guided me through all of my artistic endeavours
Very nice discussion. James has a very nice demeanor.
Love it
Great interview with James Gurney. 1 st time I discovered your channel.
Welcome aboard!
1:37:37 FANTASTIC!
for a recipe to apply on the puppets, a fast one I like is bio plastic (with water substituted by pva glue). starch part I use tapioca flour. heat slow and add white vinegar. .heat.. stir it up.. and distribute. drys not crispy and lasts well, w the glue . And as it dries maybe add fillers...yer paint etc.. It's my play doing this kind of surrealism on the spot too . thankyou both v much.
Thanks for the recipe. I'll give it a try.
@@JamesGurney I make now by eye as I've increased quantity, but levels started with : Starch 1Tspn,Water 4 Tspn, Vinigar 1tspn, and I somehow left out one ingredient,🙄, the glycerine, which is also 1tspn. Without it there wil be nothing to hold the stretched starch long, as it sets.
The sketch while doing the podcast is insane. Love it.
He’s the best
Great interview, loved it. Thank you!
This was freaken awesomee
Insane level of skill and emotional intelligence. James keeps blowing my mind every single time.
I didn't have to scroll far to see the terms "national treasure" and "legend" in the comments. Just what I was thinking! And what a great memento Jeff gets at the end.
