So glad you interviewed James Gurney. I’ve recommended is his book, Color and Light, to many of my students. Great podcast so I’ll be recommending this as well. Thanks for doing this.
I was about to write a comment about James Gurney and this video when Jeff asked James at the end for one bit of advice… and James said to be “curious.” That, is how I was going to describe James; curious by nature, demonstrating one example after another of how he lived his life and career as reflected during this interview. Magnificent!!! Thank you, Jeff.
James Gurney holds a special place to me as he was the first artist in my life to be kind enough to respond to a question I had years and years ago. Before I became an artist, I bought his color theory books and had a question about something. I was basically a kid. He was awesome enough to get back to me. I later met him in Montreal at a school I taught in. Was a pleasure. I can confirm James always sketches. We were at a resto with the atelier team, and he completed a sketch before the food even arrived.
Thank you both, Jeff and James! Such an awesome conversation. I’m sure you hear it all the time, James, but you really are such an inspiration. I hope you feel some sense of fulfillment for your massive contributions to the artist community over the course of your career. It’s hard to think of many artists who have contributed such a body of educational content and shared it so generously. You are one of a kind, indeed. All the best from the Netherlands.
One of James best qualities (other than his amazing art abilities) is that he is is very open minded. He's not pretentious as most other artists are. Especially in his understanding that photography in of itself is an artform. and that photography and painting can coexist and don't take away from one another. All of which i got out of that small line when he said that wildlife paintings were and still are a big deal.
I agree about James, but have been so amazed by the lack of pretentiousness of nearly all of my guests. It seems that with maturity and life’s lessons most of the GREAT artists learn humility. I also think ego is often a mask for fear and insecurity. It’s easy for young artists to have big ones. I know I did 20 years ago.
Thank you both for this amazing interview! I have watched and rewatched all James Gurney's videos, have studied his Color and Light book, and I never tire because there is always something new to learn. I hope to be able to buy all of his books. Fantastic artist and a great guy!
for a recipe to apply on the puppets, a fast one I like is bio plastic (with water substituted by pva glue). starch part I use tapioca flour. heat slow and add white vinegar. .heat.. stir it up.. and distribute. drys not crispy and lasts well, w the glue . And as it dries maybe add fillers...yer paint etc.. It's my play doing this kind of surrealism on the spot too . thankyou both v much.
@@JamesGurney I make now by eye as I've increased quantity, but levels started with : Starch 1Tspn,Water 4 Tspn, Vinigar 1tspn, and I somehow left out one ingredient,🙄, the glycerine, which is also 1tspn. Without it there wil be nothing to hold the stretched starch long, as it sets.
Great conversation! The guy is the definition of curiosity and invention. And he seems like a really decent human being as well. That’s a rare combination of skills and traits these days.
I didn't have to scroll far to see the terms "national treasure" and "legend" in the comments. Just what I was thinking! And what a great memento Jeff gets at the end.
James Gurney is a national treasure.
he’s a living legend in art.
Interviewing one of the modern great artists! Excellent interview.

So cool. I love to watch his videos and hear him talk. Thanks for the questions you asked I feel like I know him a bit better.
James Gurney is my hero. Thank you for the re-publishing of the Solomon J Solomon book, it's amazing.
Flash sketching is learned easily if you do as he says and just get some mileage based on faith. I love sketching people walking or jogging by.
Another great podcast. I buy all Gurney's gumroad videos just to hear him talk and watch him paint. It just makes life a better place. lol!
Very nice discussion. James has a very nice demeanor.
I really wish to one day come to the States and meet these great teachers, who have guided me through all of my artistic endeavours
