The price point would’ve been a lot easier to swallow if it was packaged with the 2nd game, like they’re doing with battlefront 1 and 2.
I’ll still buy it because I have such fond memories of playing it on the ps1 but its price is really steep for what you get.

I appreciate that it’s a niche sort of thing and they’ve put a lot of work into to it so need to change that much perhaps to make it profitable for them to make it. I played this game when I was young too and have a soft spot for it. Simply, I’ll definitely get it but just wait until it’s on sale 🙂 I’d also wait to see if they do a physical release, as with this sort of price is more of a collectors thing I feel

I've seen the interviews with Nightdive. This game was VERY hard for them to remaster because of all the weird choices Lucasarts made while developing it, like creating their version of multi threading years before it became a thing.
The fact that they were able to remake all the graphics, and get the game working natively modern systems, with modern controls is an impressive feat. Nightdive deserves to be fairly compensated for all their hard work, because this wasn't just some simple port!
And the game plays beautifully! They managed to make the game look like my nostalgia-goggles remember it--better in fact! Because I played the original recently, and it really looked bad. Even The Force Engine couldn't improve it this much.
So again, ignore the complaints. This Herculean achievement in remastering such a legendary game is worth every penny!

  • @Lolotrixx

And its doubly weird because Nightdive are usually really fair with pricing their games. I mean they released their full on remake of System Shock, wich was stuck in development Hell, for 40 dollars. And their remasters of Quake are just 10 dollars each. Only reason for the DF price that I can think of is maybe Disney just fucked them with the price for the Star Wars IP. They own Lucas Arts after all.

  • @jimjam51075
    @jimjam51075 6 месяцев назад +6

    Licensing cost.
Disney was and is still increasing the price of their park tickets, etc. to offset the massive losses on box office and licensed merchandise revenue.
I, like many others, am done with the company for a multitude of reasons.
The general consumers aren't going to take up the slack, so the licensees end up taking a calculated risk. The publisher's high price/low effort for the 87,384 (or whatever) people the developer has calculated will blindly buy this product will probably net a guaranteed profit.
When an IP has only the superfans left in its fanbase, the investment/return 100% becomes playing the margins.

Anything Disney licenses the Star Wars name out to is gonna cost an arm and a leg.
That said, DF is an excellent shooter and hails from a high point for Lucasarts. It’s worth it - to me - but I can imagine the price is going to scare away anyone that didn’t grow up with this or the hardcore 90s shooter fan.

I really don’t get this controvercy. We’ve all been spoiled with $5 games or Freeware games for decades. I get that. But $30 is literally a bank overdraft fee. It’s two Wendy’s combo meals. If you want the game, go get it. If you don’t want it, don’t buy it. Even children are wise enough to focus on what they want instead of how this game’s price compares with other games.

@troopcaptain I know what inflation is. And inflation is horrible. (Thanks, biden), but inflation has gone up for years, decades, but game prices have never gone up. The devs are using that as an excuse to raise the price of games. They are lying to us. If that was the real reason, then that would imply that inflation hasn't gone up since the 90s because the price of games hasn't gone up until now. The real reason is n because the devs are greedy, and they would charge $100 pet game if they thought they could get away with it.

30 Dollars isn't THAT bad. Especially given how bad things could be. Republic Commando's Remaster is stuck on consoles, meaning it doesn't have to compete with the PC Sales from Steam and GOG.
Also, the original engine was NOT the KEX Engine, but the Jedi engine. The KEX Engine is NightDive's in-house engine built for remastering games.

Especially first party titles like mario, zelda, sonic, etc. So we haven't (gotten to a place where games cost $60/70 (idr what price you said because I just finished the video) and if anything, due to inflation, games have gotten cheaper, and if you include all of the indie titles out there, MUCH cheaper.
