Personally loved how "Keeping Up A-fear-ances" tackled alternative medicine and how people tend to go to these unconventional treatments over medical experts. But it doesn't paint Gwendolyn as being bad, but misguided. She loves her children but doesn't immediately realize she's going about the curse in the wrong way.
But she also has a point that the elixirs won't be effective for much too long which goes into how treating the curse as apart of yourself weakens it.
Really, many families would turn a blind eye to their loved ones' suffering from mental illnesses or disorders which resorts to them resorting to more drastic measures.

I really love how Eda’s curse is handled both from a story standpoint and a character one. It’s a great story element that adds a lot of tension when the situation calls for it and adds depth to Eda while strengthening her relationship with everyone. It tells a great story about how having an illness doesn’t define you and it’s possible to manage it. Especially with how Eda learns to come to terms with it and works together with the Owlbeast despite all the grief and hard life it’s caused her. This shows just incredible at outstanding writing and Eda’s no exception.

I think Eda’s rapid aging is a result of her being merged with the Owl Beast. I think Owl Beasts have a shorter life span than witches. So Eda has a witch body with a reduced life span.

    • @amethyst_cat9532
      @amethyst_cat9532 2 года назад +82

A quick Google search says that owls have been known to live up to 25 years, but that's more of an upper limit than an average. Assuming a lifespan of 100 for a witch (on another assumption that the average witch is comparable to the average human), this would average out to a little over 62 years. Dana Terrace said that Eda is in her thirties, so if she's 31, then going by halves, that's the equivalent of 50 for a human or uncursed witch (the age I thought Eda was around before Lilith's introduction).
TL;DR: Eda might only live to be 62 based on some dubious math

Huh, never thought of it that way, but I relate to Eda a lot now. I have ADHD. My mother didn't think much of it until much later when she actually read about it. Then she was, seemingly out of nowhere, hyper-aware about it. Everything could be explained by my ADHD and anything that supposedly alleviated it was nudged onto me. (Foods, supplements, anything.)
The whole time, I was basically just trying to tell her "I've suspected I have ADHD for the longest time. I'm used to it. I can manage it. Go back to treating me like a normal person."

I think them having to battle eachother made eda realize how wrong the coven system could be. She didn't like how she had to be cutthroat to be in the emporers coven. Then she realized she would be forced to one thing which she couldn't decide, and realized how wrong it it to have to make a choice like that. Just a guess though

The other week I made a mistake by walking backwards to get out of his way (we were in a tight space painting a room i had no other direction to go) and i bumped his water over and made a mess. He got upset and screamed at me and ignored the fact I was crying until he realized I wouldnt stop and yelled at me to stop overreacting. It stung so i told him that i have the right to be upset, and for once that shut him up and made him ask why i was upset.

Oh, this was a surprise video and a pleasant one at that. For when Eda was younger I think the curse would only last a certain amount of time. But as she got older the worse could only be cursed with the elixir. As there are some diseases that worsen over time but she did have more stress as she got older. I wouldn't be surprised if the Raine scene happened around the time she started taking the elixir.
I don't have a chronic illness but my younger sister does have a birth defect. Her esophagus was not in the right place when she was born so she could not swallow food. Thankfully she is fine but she still has scars and her voice is messed up. Like Eda she embraces this and always has so seeing Eda be fine with her curse makes me happy to see.

16:19, Weirdly, it's only now when I hear it that I realize just how powerful and dramatic this scene and Lilith's dialog is, and while I do completely understand why you think this scene "didn't do her any favors", I think that quote kinda gives us an interesting and reasonable mindset Lilith had towards Luz during the first season of the show. Thinking of her as a social parasite who invaded not just Eda and her life, but also their world. Sure, Luz didn't had any bad intentions at all, but look at it from Lilith's point of view; your sister with whom you weren't on good terms for years just suddenly created a bond with a person who literally came out of nowhere, who you know noting about, with whom your aforementioned sister has no relation to, but also is the entirely different species from yours...I think it does stand to reason why Lilith was so aggressive towards Luz, at least a little bit... Sorry If this comment was too long, had to get this thought out there, while it was fresh.

Eda might have had enough control to turn back come the first time but after that lost it. I could see it working like a panic attack though, especially since she is always going through fearful or painful memories when it happens. Once she accepts it as part of her she can take steps to somewhat control it or at least make peace with it. She controls herself as a beast or harpy afterwards

  • @waferdaze8017
    @waferdaze8017 2 года назад +28

Eda's curse certainly has a LOT of good parallels, and I do like just how extremely negative it is. As someone with a chronic illness, it IS good to not only come to terms, but accept it. The quality of life, and ironically, death, improves quite a bit when being content. However, it's also something I do hope gets more resolution as even with the acceptance, it's far from ideal. Eda has no magic, the owl beast is still trapped within her, and while there's control even when it flares up, it's still worth a lot of concern. I do get if it doesn't go that way though, certainly, but it does feel as complete of an arc as most real cases can be compared at present. And again, there's a lot of emphasis on it being a handicap to severe levels for multiple parties, so I personally am hoping there is a fix discovered, as most people with chronic illness wish I'd imagine. But hey, I feel wishing and accepting aren't mutually exclusive, I have my ideals, just not the type to really count on those.

When Eda is stressed the Beast comes out, and when the beast gets sleepy it goes back in. Or a more visual representation. In Eda's mindscape, she runs from the Beast, but once it cathes up, she wakes up.

I feel like she kind of just sidelined the whole point of the curse. Sure she’s on good terms with it but that’s not something that happens in real life.
There isn’t a monster to talk it over with, you’re just dragged out till you die. It’s rough, tedious, and painful.
Eda’s powered up form is cool, though I feel like it might need a drawback to still feel like a curse. Unless at some point she finds a cure and the owl beast chooses to stay.

I have a theory about the curse that might explain the continuity error. When Eda goes into that mindscape it either shows her a scene that haunts her or the beast is trying to tell her something. In season 1 she was reliving the moment she got cursed because she just wanted to know who did it and why and in season 2 the beast was just chasing her because current Eda knew who did it and she was worried the curse would hurt someone, and young Eda was just a scared kid who didn’t know what was going on, like the healers said, they’ve never seen a curse like hers before so they didn’t know anything about it at the moment and therefore they couldn’t do anything. I could be very wrong though and this isn’t how the curse works at all, but theses are just my thoughts.

People are sleeping on the owl beast as a very specific metaphor for (C)-PTSD.
All the hallmarks. Anxiety. Anger. Nightmares. Flashbacks. Fractured social relationships. Managed but not cured (with medications for some symptoms, with others being a more permanent aspect of life if you can live with it relatively decently or have no choice. Like detaching limbs or aging quickly). Also premature aging.
Also the isolation, shame, self blame, etc.
When she and/or the owl beast injured her father, it was very clearly a PTSD trigger response. Some flashback the beast had that caused it to fight in that moment of panic.
And it was put on her by someone else's careless, selfish, and/or malicious actions.
Someone she was close to. And someone who had her own issues before then (i doubt the neglect started with the owl beast. She definitely looks like she's trying to prove something even as a kid, and eda has always seemed to try to not even compete in her same realms or directly, until after the curse).
It's very much like how abuse typically comes from people who were abused themselves, and trauma tends to breed more trauma. With every person being affected differently, and everyone being capable of breaking the cycle and managing their most damaging impulses, behaviors, and even patterns of thinking/feeling to help mitigate the damage caused to others.
Without dwelling on the shame and guilt for those early stages, slip ups, etc to an unhealthy degree (enough to do better and learn about your triggers and way to manage negative outbursts, but not so much you can't move forward or accept that you did something terrible, even if it's not really "your fault" in the sense of being in control of your actions in that incident. Something eda has to learn herself, in relationship to her curse)
These are all major and pretty specific aspects of it. Entire plot points even.
It doesn't feel vague to me.
It feels like inherited trauma from a family that looks good on paper (or had genetic trauma that happened to unlock for her and Lilith regardless of how parents acted in childhood or major traumatic events early in life)

My theory is the owl beast represents the trauma of Unnamed Ancestor.
And that ancestor was likely the pregnant witch that Caleb was with *when he was suddenly murdered by his witch hating brother*.
It comes out for eda because she's the one confronting society, it's systems, and ultimately history and the government/religion itself.
In a very metaphorically represented way with the owl beast as it emerges at the exact same moment she first declares she doesn't like covens anymore.
It may have started out as a way to let Lilith have her dream, since all she really cared about was being with her anyway. And she began thinking as an individual questioning what she really wants to do with her life. What path she wants to commit to. What she values or cares about or enjoys.
Which is about the time that a lot of childhood abuse survivors start to really feel and notice that something is actually wrong. They don't function as well as they thought. They just didn't have to make any deal decisions and just always had that "become old enough to leave" goal, with nothing else to keep them going once they do leave.
And that's when the symptoms of the stress really start to ramp up and start to intensify and only really get worse until you learn how to manage it for yourself, ideally with professional help.

Rantings of a personal, political, and economic nature:
But in the US if you have no family as a safety net, and you have trauma from childhood (and thus little if any medical documentation of that time, even if you could have afforded healthcare) it's borderline impossible to get and keep a job long enough to get health insurance benefits, nearly impossible to get on disability even if your functionality is limited to ideal circumstances and short bursts (or the problems catch up when you're not at work so you "can technically handle it though" even if if makes you constantly suicidal to push yourself into that day after day).
So many of us fall through the cracks. Many more gain energy from the anger and pain and end up creating more trauma but seem pretty functional cause most can technically keep a regular job. Some are even workaholics. (Which is a real thing where working is seen as a healthy distraction so you compulsively make sure you have no free time and stay busy/on alert. Cause the moment someone with trauma takes a break, they tend to crash. And some are never really able to function again. And most of us know this on some level. I thought just a couple months couldn't hurt.
But now I can't function in a workplace at all. It's been 8 years since I've worked more than 9 weeks at the same place or within a 6 month time span. But i also couldn't just stop working so i turned inward really big and towards cartoons, movies, books, music, any way to interact with people from a distance and with a pre set thing to focus exclusively on. And eventually that did grow into better self awareness and daily functionality. But i still can't work for a week at a regular job without a massive mental breakdown and fears of my safety.
Chronic physical pain with areas that can flare up (specifically my wrist and hip) are a major aspect. Flare Jos happen from over use and from stress. And I'm not sure if there's a physical component or not (the wrist is consistent with tendonitis and i was in sports where that kind of injury could go unnoticed. Soccer and cheerleading mainly. Plus hours on handwriting lessons every day case dyspraxia. Thought it was arthritis but that was ruled out via blood tests. Carpal tunnel by electric shocks. It's all so expensive to get no real answers. And the hip seems like maybe sciatica to me. Or maybe it's just a flaring of fibromyalgia, which i most likely do have since Lyrica does help manage it and my hip decently well. Though i can end up falling entirely if i stand or walk for too long or too many consecutive days)
And my current therapist has really been hinting for a long time that i might have to accept that i can't so any of the things i enjoy doing or feel like k should be doing (working/making reliable income).
I can't stop trying to make a better future for myself and others. Even if i can't ever be a lawyer or social worker or doctor or even just a friendly cashier that can sometimes pay for a kids toy.
So I kinda settled my future plans less on trying to get myself to function good enough for work or even college, and more on writing a lot of mental health focused essays to say the things i think are important to share and then go back to and see what is important and what might be too emotional or personal.
and then seeing about ways i might feel comfortable trying to monetize it. Down the line. Or maybe make my own video essay RUclips channel way down the line. At least sporadic income that has a chance to end up decent and possibly having a positive income. Whatever i can actually realistically do with the reality i actually have
And I'm trying to focus on this possibly productive line.
But i kinda doubt i have what it takes to make money in this way. I'm not good at clear communication or connecting with other people. Literally the social skills of hunter over here. And for many of the same reasons.
And that doubt saps my energy for it.
As does the fear of it getting big and my family finding out it's me and deciding to have me mysteriously die young like most of the other black sheep in this family full of cops, military vets, and possibly more secret agent types in my stepdads brother. Had a cousin show up dead of"unknown causes" with no investigation or even autopsy at the age of 24 after coming out as lesbian. Most of the family seemed skeptical but just accepted that pawpaw doesn't like that and even he accepted her so she must have been great. And it'd be really disrespectful to disrupt her corpse. Helps when my great uncle is the sheriff and Mee maw runs city hall. And all those cop relatives really went out of their way to cover up near death domestic and child abuse events inflicted on me and others in my house (even suggesting prone restraint after my collar bone was broken when my stepdad "just tried to move their arm in the correct position when they tried to block a regular normal spanking not given in anger". Which I'm sure is his perspective. It's just disgusting. There were so many times i thought i might die . Never knew how long it might last and i often couldn't breathe and wouldn't be believed about it's of course my family, cops and all, were all over the BLM marches. Flying to different states to go to as many as possible.)
But you know. It's all about image for the family. Always has been. It's why my grandma was kicked out of the family for being a pregnant teen. Only for them to pretend that didn't happen the minute she died and they could act like they always cares oh so much. But you know, my mom has 2 siblings that mysteriously died (no one will say how and say it's disrespectful to ask. Which they don't generally do because of disease or something) and there's no real official information about them. So maybe they were looking out for the family name even in estrangement.
But yeah I'm probably safe in reality. Now that I'm out and with my own my people. Especially if i don't get caught making any waves or hurting the family name.
So i just have to avoid them completely and try to change my identity as completely as possible without flagging the government in a way any small town cop could realistically be alerted for. And just try to exist in public without feeling like I'm going to die now or as soon as I get back to presumed safety.
I'll probably be fine. I have a healthy relationship and some friends that I don't think intentionally feed my family information (small town though. Friend of my friend is likely a friend of an aunt or cousin. So I've had to scrap 4 social names and distance from many i tried to befriend.).
So I'm fine. I'm not homeless or addicted to anything and I'm in therapy and doing better now.
I'm just not fully functional. And may never be. And won't ever really be cured or back to how i was when I was 5 and not really very traumatized yet.
It's a fairly rare group that is lucky enough to be able to really afford and access quality mental or even physical healthcare.
Without having at least a supportive partner or friend group, most end up homeless.
And many (housed or not) turn to substance use, abuse, and addiction, or "self medication".
Many end up in the criminal element (sex work, drug dealers, theft etc).
Many end up in toxic or abusive relationships repeatedly (as either victim or perpetrator. In some cases even both in different situations).
Many end up in multiple of these categories
      Most people kinda know this.
But few really see how privatized healthcare feeds into the cycles of trauma and poverty, and why the most toxic kinds of people tend to succeed socially and economically much more frequently than the people who really try to be better people who contribute *positively* to society (and no i don't mean according to economic growth. But culture, society, technology, raising healthy children, political activism for good, etc.)

      More ranting, mostly political
UBI would definitely do a lot to help.
As would removing barriers and means testing gatekeeping from social safety net programs.
And of course diverting funds from police and the military, both of which contribute greatly to trauma, and towards social programs, health care workers, social workers, all of which can work to help, prevent, and treat trauma and other mental illnesses (as well as properly accommodate neurodivergencies and disabilities)
But you know "that's political" so most don't even want too hear about it, and real people end up suffering much more as a result of the entitled comfort of the privileged. Because for SOME reason anything the privileged find to be "uncomfortable" is political
And very rarely are harmful norms and systems being portrayed as natural, good, or neutral, getting called out on how political, uncomfortable, and alienating that is. Outside of some far left video essays about the neoliberal ideology of Harry Potter or something. But inside the "i don't like politics" crowd nothing. Wonder why.
      But oh well.
At least there's eda there to remind us that us misfit societal weirdo Anarcha feminist criminal punks can be cool and also decent people who make a positive impact on people way more often than the opposite.
Who cares about conformity and following a set path? Who cares about some external definition of success or value? Who cares about people that look down on you because your life doesn't look like theirs?
All that really matters on a personal level are the people that "get it" enough to accept every aspect of who you actually are and what you can actually do, and choose to do.
And that is a powerful thing to fully accept.
So she's the kinda aspirational ideal for trauma i guess. Whereas hunter is the baby barely leaving the toxic system.
I'm still not really that confident in just disregarding the haters. I know it, but can't feel it. I feel like maybe I'm somehow toxic or abusive if i close myself off from people who judge me harshly or make me feel bad.
And even puffing up that confidence doesn't work well under stress, scrutiny, bullying, or when asked questions like where i work or if i have transportation, even when i spend a full day preparing for it. Or even sometimes what i want to eat. But i know i need to get there. It's just slow

I think the reason why Season 1 and Season 2 had different versions of her dreamscape was that in season 1, the curse was worsening so she was subconsciously desperately wanting to know who cursed her. After she finally knows the answer, her dreams go back to being chased by the beast. The thing is, it wasn't until Hooty forced her to sleep did she finally try to find answers about the curse itself. In doing so she finally was open to seeing things from the Owl Beast's perspective, and that was when she learned that it was in the same boat as her.
