I always thought the reason Luz made her palismen an egg so it could "decide" what it would be was because her interaction with Hunter saying "at least you get to decide"

Hunter's voice sounds perfectly fine. Sometimes, it sounds charming
Yeah I really don’t get the whole “Annoying voice” deal with Hunter. It’s not the factor that I like Hunter is why I don’t find his voice annoying, but it just doesn’t sound annoying. Like it’s not making you cover your ears after hearing a chalkboard being scratched on with a metal fork bad nor high pitch voice that sounds worse even that person laughs or keeps talking. Probably just some characters think it’s annoying because he’s young mid teenage boy(puberty does change your voice) and they don’t like him(only ones I believe who said this to him is just Kikimora and Eda that one time, but for Eda, she didn’t know him personally and he was on the opposing side so yep).
I agree, his voice is actually my favorite of the cast besides Eda's.
I can see where people are coming from because even though I don’t hate Hunter’s voice it can sound somewhat off putting, it is a little weird that they brought it up though because the only thing I’ve seen in terms of Hunter criticism is

Nobody really talks about his voice and I think that’s just because most people already like the VA already and are accustomed to his voice

My first thought when hearing hunter was "he sounds like a 14 year old trying to sound tough"
Turns out that was exactly what was going on.

@@christinewhoyt he's definitely sixteen. Darius mentions it in the flyer derby episode, after Hunter saves the gang from being forced into the coven. "You're what? Sixteen? It's about time you made connections outside the castle."
And then in “Thanks To Them”, Hunter gives us another lovely depiction of his life in the Emperor’s Coven.
He spent most of his life studying and training, he was never allowed to interact with other people nor his subordinates, and he couldn’t even leave the castle unless Belos gave him some missions, which happened in the weekends.
All because people would eventually realize that all the Golden Guards were clones, and because Belos didn’t want his “brother betraying him (a.k.a. Getting wise)” again.
Remember guys, social isolation is abuse.
This video made me realize one of the reasons I find him very relatable, in the boiling isles he’s essentially disabled and has to use his staff to preform magic. I’m disabled and I use a cane when I walk. During that scene with luz tied up on the air ship and hunter piloting with his staff next to him I was like “hey that’s kinda like what I do with my cane, in a way that’s kinda like a mobility aide for him. Oh shit.” I love hunter and this show so much man. The disability rep and queer rep make me so happy
I don't have a disability physically, but I think Hunter also has PTSD, and I do too. I was diagnosed with CPTSD a few months ago, and what Hunter felt after seeing the Real Belos in his mind is exactly what a panic attack looks like. It's sudden, aggressive and you don't know how to react.

Honestly.. this is so accurate, lol. Once we got to season 2b, it really did start to feel like the characters and the show began to infantaltize Hunter quite a bit. Many of the personality traits that made me fall in love with him in the first place just sort of vanished, and it was all in favor of pushing this image that he needed to be protected by literally everyone because he couldn't protect himself (hence why he feels so much less competent in Any Sport, Labrynth Runners, Clouds on the Horizon, and King's Tide). Trauma be damned, he shouldn't be portrayed as a stumbling idiot who acts tough, but gets upstaged by literally every other character in the area.
Like, I can't even imagine what his expressions in Seperate Tides and Hunteing Palisman looked like under the mask, because he never displays that confidence, intimidation factor, or snarky humor again.

@@Aisha_Luv You.. _do understand_ that makes absolutely no difference, right? Infantalization is still bad, and only serves to undermine the character (no matter how endearing they try to make it seem). Hunter was ALWAYS a child; just because some of the other characters found that out doesn't mean he suddenly can't be self-sufficient. And it doesn't make his extreme shift in personality, increasing incompetence, or underdeveloped history any more justified.

actually knowing who hunter is makes his first few scenes all the more endearing to me. I have to admit I've always loved him since the moment he appeared, but the act he put on, and the few moments that he broke character "why does everyone say that :(" just make me love him even more. man I'm so happy he got away from all that in the end

One thing i like about hunter is that he was never really evil, he never really did anything absolutely evil. Almost everything he did was because he wanted to impress belos and make sure that he can survive, very good character, still my favorite

There's something grimly cute/poetic about Hunter unknowingly and near instinctively putting trust in the Palisman Wraith even though he thought they were someone else.
After the new episode I can say with pure confidence: Hunter is the most traumatized character in the white show and needs to be adopted by Darius or Camila and get therapy and protection for the rest of his life

Luz’s guilt for Eda’s situation could make her think of home, being a dependent of a single provider and in hindsight being more aware of how her actions made things harder (in the pilot her mother was clearly called in from work). Another step in deconstructing the fantasy mindset Luz started the series with. Eda has hit the sequel game sending the protagonist to square one stage in terms of skill and power, and Luz feels responsible for this.
I think that episode where everyone was trapped in the illusion from Gus was a magical representation of someone having a meltdown which not only hurts other people but also the person having the meltdown themselves

that is actually true! we know that because in hollow mind, hunter says that he does not know what bananas are, and you would think that "oh, maybe bananas don't exist in the demon realm" but no, because in wing it like witches, in the scene where luz says "SHE LITERALLY FOLLOWED US AROUND ALL DAY" you can see a banana on her head, which confirms that bananas are real in the demon realm and that hunter is poorly fed.

This reminds me of when my dad was lecturing me when I accidentally said a little too much of my opinion which I knew contradicted his. I would just shut up and let him talk until he was done and be like “yeah. Mhm. I’ll think about that.” Just so it doesn’t have to go on longer.

One big question I have with Hunter is the whole Grimwalker stuff.
You see, Philip said he always killed the Golden Guards because all of them betrayed him and all of them are Caleb's clone.
So that gives me the implication of Hunter was going to betray Philip sooner or later because he is Caleb's clone, it's just that The Hexsquad accelerated the process of betraying him and him not being killed by Philip.
Which that weakens Hunter's decisions as a person through S2 but I don't know, maybe I'm wrong or not.
Same for Flapjack choosing Hunter because he looks a lot like Caleb and Philip said that he looked the most to him in Hollow's Mind.
I don't know if this is an incorrect way to look into things but I'm not sure.
I think the whole betrayal thing is more so Caleb's nature coming through in his grim walkers, seeing as the grim walkers betrayed Belos after finding out all the stuff he has done, so yes Hunter was going to betray Belos eventually, but it would still have been when he realizes what the day of unity is about. I mean, why would he have stuck around? His uncle was plotting mass murder!
Yeah, and Belos never bothered to "dot the 'I's and cross the 'T's'" when it came to cloning his brother. If you clone someone with a certain personality, good chance they're gonna have the same personality
I think that Belos' view of the Golden Guards "betraying him" is that they all eventually realize that they're being lied to and manipulated by Belos, and that what he's doing is wrong. It's less that Hunter's decisions are predetermined because of Caleb's personality, but more that nobody is as much of a POS as Belos is and the Golden Guards all eventually realize that.
So others have covered the Golden Guard betrayal angle, but for Flapjack… it wasn’t because Hunter looked like Caleb. Flapjack was surprised at seeing someone who looked so much like Caleb, but he stuck close to Luz at first. He didn’t pick Hunter as his new witch until Hunter said, “At least you get to pick your future.” It was that desire that led to Flapjack bonding with Hunter, not his face.
I mean true, Caleb’s personality or at least his good nature from what it seems he has probably came into the factor of all Grimwalkers betraying Belos. Though I argue that actually Belos was probably becoming close to not having one betraying him with Hunter, as if Belos is telling the truth that he was the youngest GG, that means Belos possibly started trying to build a connection with his grimwalkers longer by creating them from a younger age. Meaning Hunter if not for the events in HM would either not betray Belos until it’s too late or maybe just dug his grave and did it for him. Though this is just kinda a theory I have.
Luz:So you're more of a living doll than a person? or are you a person but stuffed with other things so you stay alive? Did Belos just use his brother's DNA to create you or do you have a "witch mother" because he also used another witch's DNA to complete you?

Pointing out Luz has trouble eating Witch food, the show actually points it out in season 1 with that sandwich scene. where she said, "I haven't had real food in so long." Meaning she hasn't been able to eat much without getting sick as her body hasn't had the necessary time to adjust to it. And considering when she eats the sandwich half, she doesn't comment on it making her fill sick, so I'd assume that is one of the few things she was actually able to eat.
34:25 I think it may actually be a painting of how grimwalkers are made. The painting being the biggest marks it as a different, most prominent memory, and it being placed at the end of the corridor makes it seem like it could be a common thread between all the other golden guard related memories. Like they all start the same and in the end always meet a similar, yet different fate.
In the painting there's also some kind of pipe that looks as if it was pumping magic into the ground.
And the most important thing is when in the finalie Collector suggests making a new grimwalker his shadow form turns into a hand coming out of the ground.
I hope this is somewhat coherent, I'm writing this while sick and words refuse to work for me.
There is also bones and a potion in the painting as well, and when the colector talks about making another grimwalker he shows a fist coming out of the ground just like in the painting

I really love hunters story, mostly because I've never related to a charecter so much in my life. It's really cathartic seeing a charecter go through something very simular to me, and react in a very simular way that I did.
Too often shows will make the guy go through something super traumatic but he'll just brush it off or get over it super fast. I feel like hunters reaction felt real and relatable, it's also super rare to see charecters also have nonverbal(or close to) panic attacks! I'm also glad they didn't give him this super big stand off where he told belos off super confidently. Instead he's cowering, he simply says "you're lying!" Wich saying that in itself is huge. It's hard to stand up to abusers especially when they've tough you your entire life not to stand up to them. I've just never felt so seen by a show before

Gosh I remember when I realized Belos totally named the clone of his brother “Hunter” maybe as in “Witch-Hunter”. My mind was kinda blown. Maybe that could be a hint for what Belos planned for Hunter and the other grim walkers to be: a better version of his brother who would’ve never quit hunting witches with him 💀
I think hunter, and Orel puttington, would have been the best of friends, had they met, considering how they both had abusive cult parents, with Belos literally being a 17th century puritan, and clay straight up shooting Orel in the leg, but I like to hear your thoughts.

Belos gave Hunter physical and emotional scars.
Now that I think about it Hunter makes me think of what Luke Skywalker could have been like if he had been raised by Vader. Though in this case Hollow Mind like events would only make things worse. Luke would want to obey and help Vader more. As for Vader choking Padme, Luke might write it off as Obi-wan's fault.

I love that Mae Whitman voices both Amity and Katara! (AND she voices Tinkerbell! All her roles are so iconic!!!) I was LIVING to see Amity "waterbend" because of this fact!
I love all of your insight into cults! I find that stuff so interesting. I focused on studying world religions in school and I wish I could have taken a class or two on that.
And I just gotta say that Gus' breathing technique helps me so much! Having to do controlled breathing and focusing on moving my fingers really rests my brain when dealing with a panic attack. This technique and the "arms in, arms out" technique from Kipo: Age of the Wonderbeasts have been great EMDR tools for me. It makes me feel less ridiculous doing it when a main character of a show does it too. I am so greatful to these kinds of shows for demonstrating how to cope with panic attacks and depression. It gives me so much hope.
I love Hunter so much. Regardless of who thinks he may be overrated or not. Hunter was the main reason I got INTO the Owl House, honest to goodness. I started finding him more and more from Hunting Palismen and I got into the show. Hunter's character is one of my favorites because he's like the story of a burnt-out gifted kid. (Maybe not necessarily burnt out, but very over-worked). Plus, Hunter feels-- so realistic?? The panic attacks felt weird, going back to his old ways felt real. Plus, his character design is amazing! He's one of the examples of "the voice doesn't fit the character" IN A GOOD WAY. Same goes for Belos! That's the point of these characters. (Alongside Phillip ig.) Hunter is intimidating, but his voice is that of a 16-year-old. Belos is evil, but he doesn't look that evil, he doesn't SOUND that evil (he can but again-- still his whole personality is being manipulative.) Phillip sounds and appears sweet, but is also guess what, EVIL! This is why I love The Owl House, it shoes that regular people (16-year-old teen prodigy or decaying goopy monster or not) CAN STILL BE "VILLIANS." This is another reason why I fell in love with the show. They treat the show well, and even though the show was cut short. It's been a GREAT ride and I will LIVE for it each and every day. This show is going down in history with Gravity Falls and making its own mark on "the wall of incredible cartoons".
Also in Hunting palismen if Hunter really wanted to he could've easily just teleported to Luz to get the Palismen back, I don't think her blindsiding him really mattered since he was done fighitng kikimora and we had seen him teleport to places way futher. He made the choice not to get the palismen, despite the fact they were for his sick uncle who he felt he owed everything to, since Luz's words did manage to get through to him. It's why I say Hunters character never needed to change to be "redeemed", he always has been a good person, he just needed to find out the truth.
I do also hope that Hunters existential crisis is explored a bit more in season 3. It would've been nice to see it explored after Hollow mind but obviously there wasn't much time for that due to the shows shortening, and the one episode focused on Hunter after Hollow Mind was more focused on Gus.
I also think part of it is due to the fact Hunter represses a lot of his emotions. We already know he's trying to hide the fact he's a grimwalker from everyone so it makes sense that he's trying to hide how he feels about that as well, but with season 3 being in the human realm which contains all the history about Caleb and Phillip I hope more of that is explored. Kind of just want Hunter to be able to cry in s3, since he does repress his emotions a lot it would be nice for him to just let it all out, he's been through so much within a week but with the day of unity coming hasn't really had much time to process it all, that also includes Belos's death which would surely impact Hunter.

I saw the coven system as a mix of old monarch systems, cult / corrupt religion, and witch hunters.
Lilith used to appeal to Amity… But that was more a mentor.
For me it was his first entrance I’ll enjoy his character and bye got me. I knew that he wasn’t a threat but a child.
Also his deprogramming and realty check is fantastic.
The collar to me is a dog thing and control and the multiple guard is showing is just fantastic.
The panick attack was better and development.

I think of the Emperor's Coven members to be like a combination of (what you said) military police, but also the Pigmask army from Mother 3. I just find way too many similarities between the EC and Pigmask army to not point that out.

Fun fact abt facial injuries they usually heal quickly depending on how deep [3-7 days if small but 1-2 weeks if deep] so hunter getting a actual scar on his face means the wound had to be deep enough to not just heal normally. Yeesh.

I'm always impressed how you relate the various challenges the characters face to real world instances of mental and/or physical challenges. Hunter as a kid has been abused and has differently articulated health conditions really showed how acutely aware you are of these conditions. But it also displays a highly intuitive feel for analyzing and comparing things that may seem to be unrelated. It does the needed work of unlocking the puzzles that allow writers and other artists to be outspoken observers of "scary" topics. They pitch 'em and then you knock the topic out of the park. Unfolding and decoding messages from artists can sometimes even surprise the artists. I'm sure there's been a few times that someone experienced your work and said to themselves, "Hmmm, I'm much deeper than I thought." The value you harvest from a given text is worth the effort. Please keep up the good work. This was a bit longer than I intended, but it's also been a long time coming. You have insightful and beautiful takes on so many shows. You are the reason I gave Amphibia and Princess Star a chance (and wept like a baby with both, thank you very much). I hope you look at new comments on older videos. Again, good work and please keep it p. You make RUclips worth watching.

I'm still confused. If all the Golden Guards were GrimWalkers how come Hunter doesn't have magic and (According to Darrius) his predecessor was among the most powerful of witches? Then there's Belos' line about how Hunter looks the most like 'him'. Shouldn't all GrimWalker look the same?
Did Belos change the recipe or something?
In Hunting Palismans, Hunter talks about his past like he remembers a time in his life before before he joined the Coven scouts and met Belos. How could that work if he was made?
Can’t answer why his predecessor had magic but it is possible as there was a depiction of an infant Grimwalker that Belos gave Hunter to a childless couple to raise for a few years and then killed them to cover his trail and blamed it on Wild Magic.
I just assumed the predecessor also had one of those artificial staffs that Belos made for him. Would Darius even know the difference? I don't think it was ever really explained why, but Hunter just loses his original staff at one point off-screen. He says Belos told him he "didn't need magic" to serve the coven, so maybe Belos took it away from him for past failures or something, and that revealed him to be powerless.
@@damkylan3 No, Belos never took it away. Hunter just left it at the Night Market for some reason (when Luz interfered with his arrest, he summoned Flapjack to threaten her, instead of just picking back up his staff). There's actually no good reason for him to have lost it, it just happens and he never brings it up again.

The sandwich was from Gus, who called it PB&J. He most likely got human food from Edna at that time since she still had the key. Or something.

I have a potential theory for "The Owl House," could Luz (and humans in general) possibly be something of an amplifier for magic cast by witches? The reason I bring this up is because some of the most impressive feats (outside of Eda's) were performed with Luz either being directly involved or in close proximity to the spell being cast. Do you find this theory plausible or am I just finding something where there is nothing?

3:56 I’m sorry but given what we’ve seen from Belos and his relationship with Hunter in the show, I refuse to believe that Belos gave Hunter special treatment unless she’s talking about that art work that Dana made of Belos giving some of Hunter’s work load to her to which I can understand Lillith’s frustration except for the fact that Hunter didn’t want that in the first place because he knew that would upset her so it wouldn’t be seen as a special treatment to him but he had no choice but to comply since it’s Belos and he said his famous line of “It is the Titen’s will”.

When I first met Hunter; I thought he still be d complete badass let lone actually stood among the crow but Instead he this obnoxious snot-nose brat that you just want to bully every now and then once you got him off guard own let lone wanted to get back at him for being petty jerk that makes Tyler from Turning Red look more Chad materiel In comparison. Throughout some of the later episodes, I still began to learn more from zoomer kid slowing giving him little bit of pity, then truly benign to feel truly sorry for him In the very end.s for the whole situation; It honestly does remind me of Boris The Wolf from Benny And The Ink Machine where Twisted lice wanted to become "beautiful nd perfect" but In order to o that she LITERALLY kills of various Boris Clones an some reason The Butcher Gangs' clones but found the "perfect clone" that was the answer to all her troubles and vows to hunt down while Henry the whole time was to play "Errand Boy" to her liking before attempts to rescue him. Now that Season 2 Is officially over I highly bout there won't be any specials let alone a Season 3 anytime soon and with Belos/Philips ripped onto Hunter he'll slowly take over for him for bit n might force Luz to surrender unless he truly kills him off If he wishes to but will just have to see how It truly goes. For one the early concept arts I've discovered I feel like he was already Luz's friend or rival at one point and despite not being childhood friend or regular oddball lovers but comparing to Turning Red again they be like "enemies at first but slowly become friend with benefits on sharing the similar Interest" or whatever they were going for but In conclusion; though Hunter use to be the most hateable you love to hate to somehow deserving our protection no matter what and does make up from all of his mistaken but If he still does out earlier then your least except PRAY he actually lives more then another day with Luz And Co.
