    First of all, I wanted to thank ‪@DeltaGW2‬, founder of ‪@RaidcoreGG‬ and leader of ‪@HardstuckGG‬, for coming on the stream to discuss add-on development, possible ToS risks, reverse engineering and so much more!

    Delta has created Nexus, a next-gen Addon Manager and Loader for Guild Wars 2. It provides an API and framework to keep plugins always-up-to-date, no fidgeting with DLL files, or crashing games after updates, or inconsistent behaviour across addons.
    Creating and (sometimes) using addons opens you up possible Terms of Service infringements. Something I was wary of, and I'm sure many of you might be as well. Getting the perspective of someone who actually makes these addons helped understand the facts, and the possible risks.

    The addon that worries me the most is actually part of Blish hud. There is a rotation-guide themed around 'dance-dance' that shows you the buttons and the order in which to press. It's great for learning builds but I'm worried that goes in the direction of addons that basically tell you in-encounter the order of buttons to press, where to move, etc.

      Yeah, that one is indeed getting pretty involved. I know there's also the timers one (which I love), but that's basically just a countdown that triggers on combat start. From what I understand, if it also showed you where to stand in the encounter, that might really be skirting ToS. But it feels like a grey zone nonetheless.

    The discussion regarding DPS metres is an endless battle between "it's a valuable tool" and "it should be banned". I love your points that people often take it to the extremes when talking about it, and you are right that the majority of the playerbase is in the middleground, but you never hear from the middleground players so assume the hardcore toxics or the casual toxics are right.
    At the end of the day, group content is a puzzle that you need to solve with your team, and having the data provided by Arc is a massive help into solving that puzzle.
    That data can be used to help each other but there's so many people that are terrified that the logs will be used to shame. You can look back at the logs and figure out how you were defeated, to learn from it and improve. If you are joining a group with 9 of your friends, why wouldn't you want those people to know what you are doing if it helps the team?
    But there's also no right or wrong way to raid. If 10 people are so against DPS metres and want to run into a boss repeatedly until it falls, then absolutely go nuts if that's what you find fun. But in the communities I am involved with full of middleground players, these tools are used to analyse in a productive, non-shaming way.

    I still remember the first dps meter that screenshoted the combat log and used ocr software to calculate the numbers xD

      Oh god, I remember reading something on reddit about this back in the day.
      Totally forgot that was a thing.

    At 58:84 , that way of doing things would be wonderful, sadly that wouldn't happen through the majority of players.
    People want fast rewards and don't want to wait or spend time instructing teammates, this has been a sentiment since forever.
    People who do, are usually in Training lobbies, and we already see how empty those tend to be.
    All this will do eventually, is strengthen the barrier between the hardcore raider and and the new uninformed players.

      I do feel there's also so many we, as the community, can do. There's already a lot of people going far above and beyond trying to usher people into new content.

      @@phandrel And I support that, but I feel like Anet needs to add rewards to motivate advanced players to teach, rather than to make it easier for them to detect a lesser informed player.
      Because I always think about players acting from a selfish mindset, and the developer having to be able to create circumstances where that selfishness becomes multibeneficial.
      Meta Events are a good example of that, where everyone has their own goal, and teamwork naturally happens because we're all trying to advance the meta to the point where we can selfishly benefit, and sometimes we stick around because we start feeling like we're doing a cool thing together.

    Are there still copies of the other DPS meter out there? Because I had someone tell me my exact DPS and I wasn't in a group. They also told me my exact gear. I didn't think this was possible with the current DPS meter, but it was pretty obvious he had some kind of inside knowledge of my character.

    • @phandrel
      @phandrel  20 дней назад +2

      Exact DPS is possible, even when you're not running ArcDPS yourself. Gear on the other hand, shouldn't be possible with any of the public ones out there. It's very possible someone made their own gearchecker and didn't publish it, though.

    Before you conduct an interview I suggest you ask yourself, what does my audience want to know and what they will appreciate? Because I'd be surprised if the "want to listen to obsessing over TOS and then return repeatedly to dwell on phantom legal questions" audience is very big. At best that should have been a 2 minute segment near the end. Huge turnoff. Great product, lots of promise, quite a lot of wasted opportunity here imo.

      With all due respect, that section was actively my favorite section. As someone who uses both Arc and Nexus add on, this information is PERTINENT and IMPORTANT at the highest degree to me. I have these add-ons because content creators I trust use them, but I also worry because I have spent lots of money on the game.

    • @gartner654
      @gartner654 22 дня назад

      @@lzephyrsweet12 That there is some subset of people who also obsess in the same way isn't a counter to what I said.

      More reason for another talk! I do agree with you I would've liked to touch on many more points. I'm more than happy to answer questions directly or if I get the opportunity in another interview. We did answer a bunch of questions from twitch chat besides the questions that Phandrel prepared.
