I played football with Steve’s brother Joe, every Tuesday for years. Joe said “Steve’s not even the funniest one in our house!” Brilliant interview and such a talented and very funny man
He’s ok, but very hit and miss as an actual communicator. A perfect example of this is the one minute segment starting at 01:35. He’s unable to actually formulate a coherent question despite having a few goes at it and I’m not sure that Coogan actually knew what it was that he wanted to say either!
@@funkychickenthesecond2102 The whole idea is that he has no idea what guests he's going to get. Other Hosts do and their questions are prepared in advance, which is why on many different talk shows the guests are being asked the same questions over and over again. This is refreshing in comparison.
A very underrated piece of his oeuvre was Tommy Saxondale. Saxondale the character was my generation, a bit older than SC, from the classic rock era. Steve Coogan’s generation normally dont usually understand that world but he and the writer totally nailed it.
Alan Partridge talking about U2 and how they encapsulated the boredom of a Sunday. It's the weekend you have to walk the dog, cut the grass, wash the motor and you think to yourself Sunday Bloody Sunday !!! Genius gets bandied about but it applies to Coogan.
Two men veiled in shades of brown and making temperate fizzing sounds at each other: this is the epitome of entertainment to make cheese toasts to! Absolutely love it!
At the top of his game for 30+ years. Tiernan is right, a full on comedy genius....there's no other word for it. My favourite stuff is his Partridge audiobooks, all done in character....it's the motherlode of Partridge greatness. On a side note what a great concept for a chat show...no prepared questions. Really seems to create a more natural conversation.
the audio books are hilarious. if you know his whole career from On the hour onwards. It's absolute genius. I listened all the way from Waverley to King's Cross and LOL for pretty much the whole journey. that day was a rapid transit.
I used to live next door to Steve in Maidenhead. Very lovely, funny guy. Spent a lot of time in his company. Great believer in moleskin trousers and I’ve come to love them too. Really comfortable and, what’s more, they have anti-viral properties. Kept me safe through Covid. Thank you, Steve.
When I saw the ads for the first season of Partridge, I didn’t recognize Steve and I thought it was a real show so I didn’t watch it. Fortunately I realized eventually and I caught up
Thoughts while watching: Tommy, darling, I love you, but those chairs just aren't good. Look at the position they force you both into. It was lovely to see Steve laugh so much, when he mentioned about walking the Appalachian trail. Brother Sun, Sister Moon is my favourite film, but no-one I've spoken with about it has ever even heard of it. Best wishes, Adam
I think Tommy may be a big fan of the man himself like the rest of us 😅 Great to see two legends enjoying each others company. Only thing that's missing is an audience
It was nice listening to Steve just chat casually about his life and later in the interview looking more relaxed about it. His comment regarding the intellectual side of things was interesting because it all felt a bit superior when I've heard him talking about the deeper side of things. So it's great so see this side to Steve, as I'm a big admirer of many of the things he's done. The happiness side of things and when he talked about his school mate was also interesting. Matthew Perry said 'When I had everything materially I could ever want, I thought it would change everything and the way I felt, but it didn't'...Happiness is certainly a state of mind and not so much wealth that makes you feel contented. My Grandad had very little but his daughter (My Dad's sister) said he was such a contented man with his lot.
Just been scrambling around looking for tour tickets before realising this was filmed in 2023. Legend man, I love this guy so much. So much of his back story is so relatable for me, and his work is a core pillar of my sense of humour as an adult. He's a hero I'm not afraid to have, unlike some sportspeople or musicians for eg.
It all feels very itchy! Coogan’s body language is all over the place. Great insight into the comedian but I’d love to have heard them both talking for another hour!
Tommy! You ‘dropped the ball’ with Roy Keane mate! You could have grilled him a bit more. As for Coogan, I think the best thing he’s done is the Roman general in the original Night at the museum film. 😂👍🇳🇴

Great interview yet again. Steve is very like Rowan Atkinson, not only in his career but with his temperament too. A very private, serious person with a genuine gift for making people laugh. You can also see parallels between him and Tony Hancock who I believe inspired both of them in one way or another.
Who "sounds" like the big Yin? Tommy??? Billy Connelly is Scottish and Tommy Tiernan is Irish and neither "sound" like each other. Both excellent comedians in their own rights; Billy being a Scotsman's Scotsman...and Tommy being an Irishman's Irishman.
Coogan in Alan Partridge Mid Morning Matters is up there with the greatest comedy performance of all time. Almost perfection.
It was The Best Thing Ever.
The movie of that with Colm Meaney is unreal !
series 1 definitely... series 2 was a huge drop off (imo)
I agree - can’t understand people who don’t like Partridge in MMM. My brother said he hates it. I said - ARE YOU ON A E!
Best thing since sliced bread
I played football with Steve’s brother Joe, every Tuesday for years. Joe said “Steve’s not even the funniest one in our house!” Brilliant interview and such a talented and very funny man
I think i remember Steve himself saying that in his book.
I went to the same school as Steve, albeit he was a year ahead of me. The whole of the Coogan brothers are talented.
I have a friend who is a stand up comic and his brother is funnier in real
Life. I’m sure it’s not rare
@@manxman18 Have a look at Steve Coogan's brothers on Google.
Tommy is a great interviewer, I can't imagine it's easy to get Steve to relax and talk. Fantastic!
I think it's also the lack of a live audience, they can have a quiet conversation
he looked pretty shite to me each kissing others arse

Incredible interview, Coogan very vulnerable. The shot with both of them in it is incredible, the body language was amazing to see. Fantastic

This all day long. Saxondale was a wonderful character
Agree on Saxondale. Amazing underrated show.
Wish this was three times longer. Loved it. Met Steve tons of times in Brighton, he’s always interesting, always accommodating, and never big-time.
You can tell. It's rare when you genuinely spot a celeb who is genuine.
The clips of Alan Partridge interviewing his doppelganger Martin Brennan in the Dublin Liveshow are incredibly funny. Well worth tracking down of YT👍
Brilliant isnt it, quality comedy

"I know a cracking Owl Sanctuary". It's still my favourite pickup line.

There seems to be a real respect between them. Lovely to see 😊

Great conversation, very real and natural. Love it 😀
An analyst would have a field day with Coogan's jerky protective demeanour. Obviously in awe of Tommy!
I love how TT just allows his guests to flow. So many interviewers want equal air time.
The atmosphere and questions/ prompts made this a very interesting and cool interview. Nicely done Tommy!

I always rated Coogan. He's the best English comedian in terms of understanding Ireland.
I showed my Irish relatives his Martin Brennan character recently...they were loving it.
His mother's Irish and all his grandparents.
@@FiveSigma72 He did mention that the clothes had to be spot on for Martin Brennan, and they were. A particular type of sweater and blazer combo etc.
He’s not English. He’s more Irish than the Irish themselves like half of Manchester and Liverpool.

There's nobody who can come close to the genius of Steve Coogan.
