@@doge5603 I think hot glue might leak into the iPad itself, especially if the front facing camera or home button is missing, I'm not sure though but I'd still prefer masking tape
I got the Wi-Fi model iPad 5, had it since my freshman year (Late 2017) and still use it for school to this day. A security guard even bought me a CAT case and it made it very durable. I went to “fake throw” my iPad on the stage (cause that’s where we wait to get to class in the morning) and I accidentally threw it real hard. I was expecting it to be dead but surprisingly nothing happened to it lol If I never had that case, I probably wouldn’t have it anymore. That thing really serves me well. Works way better than the garbage chrome books the school makes us use
Hi there Hugh, a very instructional video mate. There are a few things I noticed during this video that I think you could improve on your next iPad 5th Gen screen replacement: You started prying under the right side of the screen after heating (1:14), this is where the digitiser flex cables and the home button flex cable are located. Sliding a pick or a spudger down this side of the screen increases your chances of damaging those cables and as you explained, if you damage the home button cable your Touch ID won't work again. I've found it's better to start prying from the left side of the screen, then unstick the top and bottom sides and finally fold the screen open like a book to the right. You unscrewed and disconnected the LCD before isolating the battery (3:12) - this is very risky and could have lead to a blown backlight fuse. (3:57) Removing old adhesive from the frame is an absolute swine, I recommend using something like 'Goo-Gone' which is an adhesive remover - apply it sparingly to the frame with a cotton bud and let it sit for a few minutes, then use either a sharpened metal spudger or your black spudger and the adhesive will come away so much easier. It's important after this to scrub the entire frame with Isopropyl to remove any adhesive remover, otherwise you'll find that your new screen will unstick itself! (4:14) Removing the home button flex cable is a delicate affair as you explained. I'm not sure if you used heat here but your hot air station is perfect - set it to a low heat and low airflow just enough to soften the adhesive keeping the flex cable in place. Pry it gently and the cable should unstick itself. The home button flex on this iPad is actually in two halves and the area wrapped in the glossy black tape is where both halves are soldered together - this could end up damaged and you would never know why so its always best to take every precaution. (4:46) I'm not sure if your new digitiser came with a spacer already installed or if it remained stuck to the home button, but it looks like you hoovered up the old one! That spacer is used to keep the home button flush with the screen and to prevent it sinking lower than the glass. (5:17) Home button flex cable isn't stuck on straight! Not terribly important, just something I noticed. I couldn't see if you applied new adhesive to the home button bracket but it's so important to do this, reusing the old adhesive is risking the bracket becoming unstuck from the screen meaning your home button won't click anymore. (5:34) You haven't stuck the digitiser flex cables to the digitiser itself! If you compare how the cables look here against those on the old screen you'll see what I mean. (6:23) "I had to feed through a cable for the digitiser..." Same point as above, that cable should be stuck to the underside of the digitiser - compare it to the old screen. As I say mate, a very instructional video with just a few points that could be improved. I'm so happy to see somebody helping to keep the independent repair industry alive, good on you!
Well he actually disconnected the battery before removing the LCD. Look closely he inserted a plastic pick between a connector located on the metal plate. Maybe he did that since he could not remove the connector.
My son now have fixed up iPad screen! For someone without actual experience working on gadget repair and actually pulling it off means your content delivers!
Damn this came at just the right time. I've been having such a hard time removing the shattered digitizer on my moms iPad 5. I'm about to enter round 3
Imma do the same to my iPad. The glass is super scratched, and I have to replace it. I would have started 5 months ago if it wasn’t so hard, so I haven’t started yet.
Hugh Jefferys, your videos complete my personality. I have learned to do all sorts of repairs through watching your videos. My most recent project was on an iPhone 6. It was bent, the glass was shattered, and the battery was in need of a replacement. I have ordered a new housing, new battery, and new screen on it, and now it is in mint condition, I just want to say thank you. If not for your videos and tutorials, I would have never been able to restore this phone, and it would have gone to waist.
Does he have an amazon account or are his repairs affiliated with account? Because I’ll be more inclined to buy a repaired device from him than literally anyone else who’s selling them lol
I have the 6th gen iPad and it’s slightly cracked so this will be a really helpful tutorial for me if I happens to try to replace the glass by myself. Thank you for all of your quality and helpful contents!
I would recommend using b7000 and run a thing bead around the chassis and leave for 1/2mins and that seal the digitiser and then clamp for around 1 hour for a tight seal. The tape you are using will cause the screen to lift back up. Ultimately you are supposed to heat the screen to soften the tape and clamp it all around to seal. The b7000 is a great all round adhesive for a phone and tablet lcd/dig adhesion.
I think another reason is because he sells these devices after repairs and apple products make more money resale than android so he just focuses on his bread and butter
Was about to get one and found someone selling a cracked iPad Pro 10.5 for $190 USD lmao. Your videos have helped me immensely, keep up the good work man!
I got a 5th generation for free from a teacher at my school because her 8 year old son has anger issues or something and completely destroyed it. It looks like it was smashed against the corner of a table and it was also very bent. The LCD is smashed and you can only see a tiny portion at the bottom. Somehow the digitizer still works so I was able to use a screen mirror app to remove the iCloud and then I erased it and set it up with iTunes. I have yet to restore it even though it was like a year ago I've never gotten around to buying new parts for it. I'm pretty sure it's a 32gb.
I heat the ribbon cable for the home button up a little helps it lift easier and i like to melt a little hot glue gun glue around the home button bracket as the tend to unstick easy after they have been removed.
Get yourself a heating mat. So much easier to deal with than a heat gun. Even distributes the heat and the adhesive only has to be heated once, maybe reheated one time. So much more convenient
i’m watching this on the same model of ipad and damn, this hurts (my ipad doesn’t have any cracks or anything, just minor scratches that don’t aren’t that visible)

the reason why its shattering so much is A) you haven't taped it & b) it isn't hot enough, EDIT: also with the homebutton cable, use some heat, that was painful to watch. No offence, its very easy to break it and it won't hurt it with a little heat

Hi there Hugh, a very instructional video mate. There are a few things I noticed during this video that I think you could improve on your next iPad 5th Gen screen replacement:
