      The Random, Con is correct. To avoid water getting into the backlight you use adhesive around the glass. Why? If water is slipping by the glass it has a perfect route to go into the backlight layers due to water tension. Anyways the real reason they used adhesive is because of various advantages, not just because apple is greedy.

    I repaired so many of these. When you lifted the metal plate that has all the screws you need to push the board down near the flex cable is soldered or you tear it like you did the first time you opened it. Also removing the board and battery with the copper back part helps not mess up the battery. My specialty was replacing the charging port because nobody on this island could do it.

One had a gap under the screen, second one sealed correctly but the buttons flex was damaged and wired manually causing power+volume up when pressing power. Last one was almost done and the speaker connector broke off the board. Now it is cheaper to buy used working iPod touch than repairing one >_

    Thank you for this video, Hugh. I recently had to lift up the rear seats in a car I bout a couple years ago. I found an 8 gb iPod touch under there. It was all grimy and dirty, but after a wipe down it cleaned up ok. I plugged in a charger I had. At first it didn't do anything. I waited for it to charge up enough to power up, but nothing. Eventually I unplugged the charger, and pushed it in and out of the charger port, wiggling it as I did. Eventually it powered up, but as soon as I unplug it, it shuts down. I was looking to see how hard it would be to change the battery. This video has shown me that it's not worth it. If I want to use it, I will have it plugged in, in my car or something.

    I used to work on mobile repair between 2013-2017. The first few devices I worked on was this iPod touch 4th gen since in 2013, that device is widely used.
    They're bane to my existence and the primary reason I get a lot of angry returning customers. Also the 5th/6th gen iPod touch are nightmare as well. The only other device I have the hardest time is the HTC One M7 (2013).
    I'm a software developer now. But I miss and don't miss mobile repair career. Maybe I can do some side hustles for fun later on.

    I had one of these and the screen got smashed. I decided to buy a screen replacement from amazon when I was 15 or so. I did the replacement and it worked! I didn't have adhesive so I just ducktaped the corners to hold the screen in place. About a week later, only the bottom half of the screen worked and it slowly got worse and worse. I still have it, it can power on but the screen just doesn't work. I thought about replacing it now and properly fixing it but I'm not sure its worth it

    I used to repair these back in the day. Easy stuff compared to todays stuff. (I do microsoldering on iphones etc)
    I'll just start by letting you know that the 2 holes behind the power button you need to keep those intact as theres a wire that runs just above or below the holes so most likely you tore it when you assembled it. Also you need to use FLUX when soldering. I cringed when I saw your solder joints.. Good luck let me know if you have any more questions

Lastly I had to use an old iPhone 4 to hear my music and the power button got stuck and you gotta press really hard to turn it on or off. The repair difficulty on this device is about a 6 out of 10. With a little practice, you dont need to remove the mainboard to replace the screen. The pcb has some elasticity to it and as long as certain connections are freed up, it can be bent slightly to reconnect the digitizer connection much more easily.
    Unfortunately you did a lot more work than was necessary.
    Practice makes perfect definitely.

    @BenEyah 4 года назад

    I've only ever done one of these, got it cheap back in the day so thought why not give it a go 'cause if I break it it's nothing much lost. For me though I didn't have a heat gun or anything so just brute forced it from a crack then picked the edges away, I used normal manicure tweezers to press the connector in which worked reasonably well for me 'cause I had to do it again for it after I sold it but I guess I was lucky 'cause I never had any issues with the power button after doing it. Think the most difficult apple device I've done was the original iPhone but that was 'cause it was the first thing I'd ever opened to actually repair with the tools you get with a screen and probably 'cause I was like 14-15 at the time

    if I had to make a guess, I`d bet that what broke the power button was Apple`s brilliant idea of placing the camera screw hole right above the power button cable, so if you screw it firmly into place as is expect of screws, it actually pierces through the button cable

I'll now probably start with the iPhone 4 or 4s. Any suggestions on the most reliable vendor for gold plated/solid replacement chassis?

  • @modteamuk
    @modteamuk 4 года назад +1

    Try an 8+
    I ripped the Home Button's flex whilst transplanting it from the broken screen.
    The cable is honestly about 2mm wide, the connector is tightly secured and the entire flex is adhesived to the chassis. Prying from the chassis will rip it, like I did.
    Now here's the kicker, Apple will not sell home buttons. The security logic is built into them and I guess it could circumvent their Touch ID security.
    The only solution is to buy a reproduction home button that connects as some sort of bluetooth device? Not ideal...
    It's going in the draw for now, same as your Ipod did in 2018. Maybe i'll come back to it in 2022 and break even more of it...

    When you removed the power button cable you mentioned that it had something sticky over it. Could the connections be shorting on the metal frame that screws down on top of it. If that's the case then it would explain why it worked before the shield was screwed down.

    Get a soldering wick, it’s a copper braided wick that helps you pick up solder with a problem. Watch some RUclips vids on it, I hope it’ll help

    I highly recommend a TS100 solding iron. Its a amazing soldering iron and can output a lot of heat on things with many layers of copper

    • @SeMr7en
      @SeMr7en 4 года назад

      Piggy backing off my old comment, the ts100 would INSTANTLY melt those pads Hugh struggled on, even at a lower temperature. And it doesn't take 2-4 minutes to reach its full potential like those eBay 20 dollar cheapo kits do. It takes about 15 seconds from cold start to target temperature. And it recovers extremely fast after soldering a huge ground plane.

    it’s a tie for hardest to repair device between the ipod touch and ipad mini 1/2, both suck to repair, don’t sell for much and are super easy to break, ended up just selling the ipad as parts that i was trying to fix as every time i fixed it something else broke, worst devices to repair by far

    I've had one with dead pixels, so I was planning to change the screen but I saw that the screen literally costed as much as the iPod, and the process to replace the screen looked so hard, so I ended up selling it, and now I have a 6th gen

    The screw close to the power bottom can easily damage the power bottom cable, in most case that is the issue

    Still have mine. The only problem I have with mine is that the battery drains really fast now. Thought about getting it replaced but after seeing this video its not worth it. I'll just keep it on my bluetooth radio that has a charging dock.

    I recall going to the apple store to get the cracked screen fixed on mine back in around 2011. Apple's "repair" was that they just gave me some refurbished one instead of fixing the one I had. It was even unrepairable for them xd

    The iPod touch was the first device I ever opened up and still the only one I couldn’t repair. Reconnecting that cable behind the logic board is an absolute nightmare. Such poor design.
