As a Zune user who used one of these until it literally broke and immediately replaced it in high school, we were the best. I still use my Zune HD to this day! Actually am currently doing research into getting my 120gb Zune working again, HDD crapped out on me and then I just let the battery sit until it could no long hold a charge. But no more, it is time!
same thing happened to me - 80gb drive died and it's been in a drawer for over a decade :( loved it while it was working though. very tempted to do the drive and battery swap...
This is funny because I got my old zune out a couple of days ago and went down a rabbit hole for 2-3 hours figuring out how to get it to work on Windows 10. Works perfectly just like it did when I got it 2007, synced most of my music library to it 😄 But this…. this is AWESOME! I would love to mod my Zune like that but I’m afraid I would mess it up lol.
What a great video! I'd seen Zune, etc., storage drive swaps before, but your solution for the Qi charging and particularly the BT antenna were absolutely ingenious! I can see why you chose the early Zune 30 GB devices rather than the more popular Zune 80, given the tight fit; I'm a bit sad I sold mine to fund a custom-engraved Zune HD (which I still have, and works as a incredibly compact and intuitive MP3 player, though its file form support is limited). It was definitely never as popular as the iPod, but I do remember Zunes became the second most popular PMD/PMP brand, ousting Creative, but that was no doubt due to the general culling of the device market sadly (with D-Link, Archos, etc., gradually leaving, alongside Microsoft and Apple); it does seem like Creative is the last surviving inexpensive mass-market PMP manufacturer (their devices seem far more popular than Sony and the more high-end manufacturers putting out players that cost as much, or more, than smart phones), giving them the last laugh.
The media player I had the holds the biggest place in my heart might surprise you. I had a Nintendo DS lite with an R4 flashcart. The DS was completely custom with a clear plastic shell replacement. It played games, music, and movies, all drag and drop (provided they were in the right format). I used it as my main media player through high school and college. Always envied the Zune though, yours looks amazing now! Fantastic job.
Man this takes me back. I used to have a Zune 80, and I loved that little guy. Used it throughout High School and a few years after until the battery completely died. I need to see if I still have it in a drawer somewhere.
Just did these mods and I love it!! Thanks for the video and links! I moved the LED from the bluetooth to right below the headphone jack. This way I can see if the bluetooth is on/flashing/whatever. I also removed the tx/rx switch and bridged the 2 contacts to keep it in tx mode. No real reason, just figured you never know! My only issue is the wireless charger might be too far from the back. It was working before I put the back on it
@@MadModLabs Have you tried to pair a different set of headphones yet? I'm assuming it enters pairing mode when powered on regardless if it paired to something already, but I'm not sure
@@CollinstheClown Yes, I have paired it to a Bluetooth soundbar and also tried it out in the car! The Bluetooth adapter that I have always enters pairing mode. It will always attempt to pair to the first available device.

Excellent video, I have been wanting to do this exact mod but with USB c too and an sd card to cf adapter rather than SSD for larger cheaper storage whilst being even more power efficient, however Zunes in aus are tough to get and very expensive and when they are listed unfortunately
Great video. Even though I have never had a Zune, it is great when someone repurposes older hardware and makes it usable for today's world. Just like dosdude takes vintage apple hardware and changes chips and upgrades the hardware to be the best that it can be, you have taken a perfectly usable though space limited piece of equipment and made it useful. Keep up the great work and I just subscribed to watch future projects.
Protip! A lot of electronics can be run on lower voltage than they 'ask' for. Sometimes they can be wonky, but a lot of times it's worth testing. You may not even need that 5V regulator. And even if it seems like you do, check the actual working voltage of the chips in the BT transmitter; they may step it right back down to 3.3v! Finally, I would be surprised if the had drive or screen didn't already draw 5V at some point; there may already be places you could tap some 5V power from without the separate board. Besides that, this looks like a great mod! Makes me want to get a Zune.
The one problem with this video? No chapters. It's a shame, but otherwise this was an incredibly helpful video! Thank you very much for appreciating the Zune as much as me. lol
Nice video! I had a Creative MuVo V100 Mp3 player. Those were the days! Later got a Sony Walkman phone, which was both phone and mp3 player but I wasn't the same. The MuVo lasted so much longer.
I had the Sandisk Sansa E player with me everywhere. It used TransFlash-cards (called MicroSD nowadays) and it was fantastic. Only the propietary charging cable and short battery life was the letdown. Lasted until 2018 when the battery exploded....
Mine was a Sony Walkman with about 2gb (or 4gb) memory. It was in 2010. I used it until 2012, when I got my first smartphone, a Samsung Galaxy Ace. I can't believe it was over 10 years ago.
Those BT dongles always have a ton of static but it's still a cool addition to add. I'm surprised all those upgraded fit but that is a chunky case. I was always an iPod guy but when I finaly met someone with a Zune I liked it a lot. Like, had I not moved music to a smart phone I'd have moved on to Zune. Or, had my introduction to mp3 players been a Zune before an iPod I'd have been a Zune user. For sure. They didn't deserve the flak they took.
I wanted a zune HD so bad and actually was gifted an iPod touch! Same thing for the original Zune I got an iPod classic instead. I think I’m going to get one for nostalgia
If it were HDD storage it would be a REALLY bad idea. Most flash memory devices like SSDs and flash drives are not affected by magnetic fields. Thanks for watching!
The Zune was outstanding (though the first one was a rebranded Toshiba Gigabeat). It had better audio, software and features than the iPod of the time, and the Zune HD was simply amazing.
I still have my Zunes! I was (still am) an Apple hater so Zune being an option for an MP3 player at the time was great. I brought it with me during HS and College. I'd love to get it fixed and working again, as I know use my phone like everyone else. 😅 I don't have enough pockets to hold all my electronics so I had to make the switch.
Great build man. Tried to ch age the hdd and battery from the link. But someone had returned it with their old drive. Nothing on it, and I will have to buy another one. Will use your video again
this was and still is the favorite media player out of all the ones i have owned over the years. It just so damn good and so far ahead of apple in terms of use and function. sad it didnt take off. I loved the the following iteration as well they just kept making it better and better
most faithful mp3 player I had was a 4gb Creative Zen Mosaic, was the first player I ever owned and the one that ironically lasted the longest when compared to it's successors that I replaced it for.
My favourite mp3 player was a phillips one with a 20gb harddrive. It was an absolute unit and it was when everyone else was still rocking little 512mb nugs. It could record with a mic or the dedicated line input, came with great headphones, and i remember the sound quality being incredible. Like the first time i listened to an iPod, it sounded awful in comparison.
I still have my 30 gig zine but holy heck those short soldering points are difficult af. Tried doing small ones like that when making my own UBS cables could never get it right
Nice video (obvious dank pods influence) I just wonder why you went thru all that trouble for only 128gb! Is it a software limitation of the zune? If it's possible, go at least 512gb if not 1tb!
