Thanks Derek. No magic sauce. 99.9% of the time the images I render are done with models straight out of the box. I barely ever mess around with the materials or the settings. It's all just with lights. I have a motto : Keep it simple. I read too many places or people saying do this, then do that, then do this is other. No. Just keep it simple. Every extra light you add into a scene just complicates things as they all have to complement each other. Start with a model and just use one light source .. play with it and see what works .. when you've got the hang of that then start adding extra layers .. don't try and do a complete scene straight away. Just build up to it.
The lighting is just my own set up I use for the Tutorials .. nothing set in stone and i just adjust as and when .. the background is from this light set up : tinyurl.com/3t2db46s .. it's a decent light set up too to get you going
i got a question, the licensing stuff confuses me on the website. if i make a character from scratch and use it in a game i plan to sell on steam will that give me any legal problems with daz3d? I understand that using 2d images for a visual novel is fine but not so sure about 3d games. was wondering if you knew and i would love some advice
Sure. As you say - any image that you create is fine. It's yours. You own the rights etc .. Can do what you want with it. Post it anywhere or use it in something like Ren'Py .. However, use any actual asset in a game (not a flat image) .. like with Unreal or Unity .. you'd need an interactive license .. FOR EACH ASSET YOU USE .. So, model, hair, clothing etc The reason for this is because to use a character model in a game with Unreal or Unity - you'd need to distribute the models geometry with the game. You'd need to include the actual 3d model .. It's known as an "interactive license" because a player needs to interact with the model in real time to make it move, jump, punch, kick and die etc .. And for that - you need to distribute the model and it's geometry so it can be manipulated and interacted with within the game .. hence why you need a license. That clear things up?
Hey there - well, the first question would be : do you have any clothing downloaded and installed on your system? The directory structure should automatically get created once you install something - clothing will create (and the clothing itself go into) .. /People/Genesis 8 female/Clothing/ .. if you have clothing for Genesis 8 .. but it could be Genesis, Genesis 3 or Genesis 9 depending on what generation the clothing was created for (and likewise .. it could be for Genesis 8 MALE instead of female) .. so make sure you check any different Genesis generations that might exist within People .. if there is not a clothing directory there then you either haven't installed anything yet, something you have installed has a non-standard directory structure, you've installed it to the wrong place or you've accidentally deleted the folder! Daz would automatically see the folder if it was there .. See .. I don't have a Costumes folder .. so if you've just installed some item of clothing and it's the only thing you have installed then I would guess it's got a non-standard directory structure and has created and placed it in "Costumes" instead of the standard Clothing folder.
Well I'm not sure the absolute basic will have clothing in for Genesis 8 .. I know something called "Genesis 8 Essentials" can be downloaded free from the Daz store that has some basic wear (shorts and a sports top) and that gets installed into People/Genesis 8 Female/Clothing directory - so make sure you have that downloaded and installed. As for hair .. again, if you're only using the absolute basic stuff it might work a little different (a more complicated way) .. just be sure you have the hair selected in the scene tab, find the hair in People/Genesis 8 Female/Hair (if that's where it's stored!!) .. find the Materials folder below the hair folder and then double-left-click on the chosen texture .. and it should apply .. try some different options for hair as different versions of brown can look very similar in the viewport, for instance. So try a pink out if there's one there ..
Just added a background and added some lights .. The video isn't about the "jazzing up" part - other videos cover that - it was just makes it something more pleasant to look at once we've built our character out how we wanted
@@RaukoDaz3D ok thanks! im gonna see the other video. Also I got a question when making visual novels you render the characters in scene together with background or sprites for characters and background separated? (for renpy specifically) thanks
Damn I am late to this party but I am glad I found this. I knew of Daz3D in the Visual Novel spate for forever but assumed it was going to cost me an arm and a leg to get it. Boy was I glad to find out it is free to download. Question; do you have a video that on a general scale, showcases the extent and limitations of what Daz3D can and can not do? For myself in particular, as much as I love VNs, I am a film maker. Something that has constantly caught my eye with a lot of VNs using Daz is that the 3D renders are... quite simple. There is not a whole lot going on. Usually feels like it is in a loop, and pacing just often feels like a sped up version of the starting loop. It works, sure, but not all that impressive and it makes me wonder if there are other motives to why this appears to be happening a lot with VNs.
No! Daz is completely free as a base piece of software. The cost comes in buying assets - models, clothing, hair etc .. although after you get your hands on a few models you can start to mix and match them a little to create fairly unique models. As for limitations - there aren't too many. In the hands of an experienced artist then the images can be comparable to anything created in any other 3d rendering software. There is a danger of a "Daz look" which you'll see a lot - certainly if you've played a lot of VNs - but that's more down to a) the base model that's been used - some model creators you'll find on the Daz store take a cookie-cutter approach when creating their models. ie, they take what's been done before and then tweak it to "create" a "different" model .. so a lot of models come with a "Daz" look b) the skill level of the artist. Daz might be easy to use but it can take a lot of years to get to grips with fully As a film maker - the animation tools within Daz leave a lot to be desired. You can do animations within Daz but a lot of the time you feel like your fighting against Daz to do what it is you want to do. There's apparently a new Daz in the works (5.0) - but it's been "soon" for about 2 years now. A new interface might see animating improve but I wouldn't hold my breath. Any animations I do - I do outside of Daz and then import the FBX into Daz. As with any 3D renderer - a single image can be slow to render. Hey Effe - sorry for the delay in getting back - I missed the notification. The backdrop is from the BOSS Lighting set up (tinyurl.com/2eapmvs7 ) over on the Daz store
No, there was no video for it yet .. I'll no doubt do something another time .. but for this video I just wanted to a) keep it simple and just focus on loading the model and then b) just show to anybody new to Daz that the basic view in which we were looking at the model was just that - a basic view - and then just show a quick example of what we could do when we jazzed it up.
Love your videos man, I have a request, Can you make a tutorial video on how to make custom characters in Daz3d, It would be really helpful for me as I'm trying to make a VN game. Thanks again 👍
Hey there .. select the model of the character in the Scene Tab - and then expand it out by clicking the little downward arrow next to the name. What you see underneath are all the items that will be connected to the model. Find the shorts .. select it .. and either a) click the little eye icon next to the shorts to hide it .. click it again to unhide or b) right click on the shorts and select Delete in the submenu if you want to remove them completely.
@@BlackJack727 Ahh .. well that's a different thing entirely and not something that can easily be done. Firstly, select the shorts ... and then in the Parameter tab below the scene tab .. look for "Actor" .. select it and then on the right you'll see where the morph sliders for the shorts will be .. you'll have to see if the creator of the shorts has included a morph to do this .. Probably not, but some do. If not - then you'll have to delve into really advanced areas such as dForce, dformers and / or Mesh Grabber .. which I can't cover in one of these comment replies. I have a couple of videos about dforce (cloth simulation) on my channel already .. so I'd take a look at them first .. but then you'll have to get really creative to have it work in lowering the shorts as the videos only cover the basics ... and if you've not played with dForce before then it will be tough to do.
@@RaukoDaz3D Thank you! Will you release a video on how to interact with clothes and deform them and how to lower them, raise them, etc.? It's just hard for a beginner to understand without a video)
@@BlackJack727 There's no real set way to do it and it's probably something beyond beginner level. Unless the Morphs come with the shorts (some out there do it) .. then you'll really need to know your way around Daz and have a feel for it. Start with the basics of dforce or look into Mesh Grabber on the Daz Store .. those are the two ways I'd combine together when doing it myself .. but you'd really need to have good knowledge of them (especially dForce) to manipulate things in the best way to achieve the result you want - but even then, it won't be easy
You can get free stuff on something like ShareCG (www.sharecg.com/) .. though I won't comment on some of the quality .. likewise, keep your eyes on the Daz store as you'll find some free stuff on there too!
Hey there .. if you look at your menu bar at the top of Daz you'll see a "Render" menu option .. left click that and in the menu that drops down, you'll see Render .. Additionally, if you click on the Render Settings tab on the left side bar .. you'll see a blue button up at the top saying "Render" .. give it a click and Daz will do it's stuff.
@@RaukoDaz3D Hello again, I am glat that you are making those videos. I learn a lot. Still, maybe because my poor english I always close some tab, or miss click and then spend hour on finding something. Right know I would like to know how to change scene axes or basic axe? Because when I load some scene and then place object in corner, each new object end on starting point and I have to find it and move to another place. That´s also making it stressful each change of pose, because it jump to start point.
I'm too stupid to understand daz So you don't create anything from scratch but only put assets together that you get from other people? So are the assets just created in blender? This is so confusing to me. The shapekeys and options on daz characters are remarkable but is it good for anything other than importing a model into blender and using it there?
You've pretty much nailed it. People create models in things like Blender or zBrush .. be that people, clothing, hair, environments etc which can then be brought into Daz (usually sold through the Daz store)... You can mix and match things - use morph sliders to change how the models look (can create some unique looking models by simply moving sliders). The skill comes in putting it all together in a scene with lighting and producing 3D images. Daz has all the tools to put together a scene and render them out. If you're already skilled in things like Blender and are able to create your own models, texture them and light them .. then Daz might be seen as a step down .. although, putting the images together as mentioned above can a lot of practice to get high quality images. If you use Blender, you'll realise how long it can take to create something from scratch .. With Daz - a lot of the hard or time consuming stuff is done for you and so you don't need to worry about that .. you start from the point of putting it together and creating images.
Your likely experience with DAZ, install, open up, half the assets wont work for ?? reasons, buy/install some assets, half wont show up or work for ??? reason, look for help and find suprisingly little information, give up and chalk your loss to however much you spent
Sorry you're having that experience - it's certainly not mine. I can certainly help you out if you tell me which assets you're having issues with and the process and steps you're going through ..
You used a Daz model for the tutorial and immediately I lost interest. I give you credit for not starting with a dev model as does WP Guru together with the most sordid music ever, in the background.
Of course; and I do not have such models being a beginner, and last time I checked tutorials are for beginners. Excuses, no problem, tutorials are fortunately plentiful.
@@henniedevilliers7570 I don't understand what your issue is .. You're looking for Daz Tutorials? .. yet complain that those very Daz Tutorials you're looking for use Daz models .. I don't see what the issue is? What else is a Daz tutorial going to use?

Really interesting as usual. I just dont understand how you obtained the final lighting with the brown backward? Is is a special render preset ? Thanks for all
Did nothing special - just added the background and a couple of lights .. but edited out what I did as I didn't want to complicate the video as it's aimed at beginners and was about building a character model from scratch .. I'll get onto more advanced lighting soon!
Thank you for answer and for all your work !
That was amazing : wondering if you can import these characters into photoshop ?
Well, if you render out your scene and get a 2D final image then you can load it into PS and view and edit it as much as you want
Wow. So real looking. Great tutorial. I discovered Visual Novels recently and looking to have a try at making my own although only very recently and lots to learn and research. Can these be used in something like Ren'py?
They can indeed .. in fact .. I'm in the process of creating my own VN as we speak .. ;)
@@RaukoDaz3D Exciting times ahead. This channel is going to be invaluable, I can already tell 😁
@@piercedyouth Glad to be of some help!
How did you do the backdrop?
Hey Effe - sorry for the delay in getting back - I missed the notification. The backdrop is from the BOSS Lighting set up (tinyurl.com/2eapmvs7 ) over on the Daz store
Did you have a tutorial on how to do the better lightning in 14:08 ? the difference is very massive!! or did you already have the video for it?
No, there was no video for it yet .. I'll no doubt do something another time .. but for this video I just wanted to a) keep it simple and just focus on loading the model and then b) just show to anybody new to Daz that the basic view in which we were looking at the model was just that - a basic view - and then just show a quick example of what we could do when we jazzed it up.
@@RaukoDaz3D ooh i seex thankyou rauko! i will wait for more tutorials
It is important to be kept warm. 🤣
Naturally it depends on the environment. Stuck in your undies in a large studio probably isn't the warmest of places. 🥶🥶🥶
Love your videos man, I have a request, Can you make a tutorial video on how to make custom characters in Daz3d, It would be really helpful for me as I'm trying to make a VN game. Thanks again 👍
Thanks Rishi. When you say "Custom" do you mean within Daz or using tools outside of Daz?
@@RaukoDaz3D I mean within Daz3d
Yeah, I'm already planning out a video about that .. but there might be a few other videos in the list ahead of it for now.
@@RaukoDaz3D It would be really helpful, Thanks Man 👍🏻
What app you using for the vn?
can you make a person and add it to twitch?
.. and use it as real-time avatar? If so - probably not.
@@RaukoDaz3D thanks for the feedback
How do you port the models to Blender?
Hey there - there's a (free) Daz to Blender add-on over on the Daz store (tinyurl.com/4sayz6ns ) makes the whole process simple and easy.
Well, what should I do if, for example, I want to take off her knee-length shorts, what should I do?
Hey there .. select the model of the character in the Scene Tab - and then expand it out by clicking the little downward arrow next to the name. What you see underneath are all the items that will be connected to the model. Find the shorts .. select it .. and either
a) click the little eye icon next to the shorts to hide it .. click it again to unhide
or
b) right click on the shorts and select Delete in the submenu if you want to remove them completely.
@@RaukoDaz3D I don’t need to hide or remove them, I need to lower them but so that they remain on the character))
Where to get free models?
You can get free stuff on something like ShareCG (www.sharecg.com/) .. though I won't comment on some of the quality .. likewise, keep your eyes on the Daz store as you'll find some free stuff on there too!
How to render? Unfortunately, even in DAZ tutorial I didn´t find what tutorial ask for. So, how to render? :O Thx.
@@RaukoDaz3D Ohh, here it is... I was confused that everybody say..and render..and Ï didn´t see what to press. Thank you.. (y)
Glad to help out marek!
I'm too stupid to understand daz
So you don't create anything from scratch but only put assets together that you get from other people?
BELLISSIMO VIDEO MA LO VENDI IL PERSONAGGIO
Grazie. Non sto vendendo il personaggio, ma è in vendita sul sito web di Daz. (tradotto in Google)
I can certainly help you out if you tell me which assets you're having issues with and the process and steps you're going through ..
if its a beginner video, why are you referring to things we already talked about???
😳
In what way, hank?
wtf skipping iray setting value??
What Iray setting value?
Lol no show light setup wtf
Video is about loading and building characters .. for beginners.. not lighting
You used a Daz model for the tutorial and immediately I lost interest. I give you credit for not starting with a dev model as does WP Guru together with the most sordid music ever, in the background.
Because it's .. ermm .. a Daz Tutorial ..
Hello, I want to animate the crowd which are Daz 3D characters (Genesis 8 and Genesis 9) and with Daz 3D animations in Unreal Engine 5.4 How to?
Retargetting Unreal animation on Daz Character is working but how to apply Daz animations (Multiple Animations) on multiple Daz characters in single project? Please Reply
Hey there - that's a toughie for me as I've not used Unreal for many many years. From what I remember - you should just be able to set up a BP for each character and apply the animation and then drop it into your scenes. Like I say - I haven't used Unreal for a long time so you might be best served on an Unreal forum or channel! Sorry!
