8years ago, I stumbled upon your video seeking guidance for timing my M42. Was so fascinated about your workmanship that I completely overlooked the obvious for the low compression across the cylinders. Watching it again after so long, I noticed the chain soaked in 'mayonnaise' which indicates oil and water mixture, definitely an overheated cylinder head. But yeah keep up the amazing work to keep us coming back for more!
I am currently rebuilding an M44 and there is, in fact, a TDC mark. It is a tiny mark on the crank pulley and an arrow on the oil filter housing. It is usually quite difficult to see on these engines since they always leak tons of oil through the front covers.
Hello, looking for help. I own a 1997 BMW e36 318is coupe . Had a rod knock on my M44b19 engine. Crankshaft has been done. Bought new rods and new bearings, gaskets and more. After assembling the engine. The car wouldn’t start. So I checked the fuel pump and the pressure in the rail and it’s all good. Next I checked sparks. I was only getting spark at cylinder #1 and #3 so I changed the ignition coils. Wouldn’t help. Double checked the timing and all was in place. Crankshaft is set right. Exhaust/Intake camshafts were in the right place. Also changed the camshaft and crankshaft sensors for OEM sensors but the error still occurs. Checked all the grounds. Next thing that came into my mind was that the DME was bad. So I contacted a local shop and got a DME with a chip for immobilizer and still I have the same problem. Tried checking all the relays and some wires and it was ok. I have a diagnostics software called INPA but no errors came on. I’m getting really desperate because a lot of time and money is invested.
why not just mark where you take off the spakets and then reinstall them. if you dont move anything what changes? just wondering i dont have the timing tools thx
Hey man great video!! I needed to know one more thing that you didn't show on your video which I needed to know. What position do you fit the gasket? Need to make sure as I don't want to do the job twice. The car I bought had no head on it and the headgasket is an after market with no indication on it. I'm really stuck here so if anyone else knows I'd appreciate it.👍
That's what I thought! But the guy I got it from said he'd put a new headgasket on it and there was still oil escaping to the ExTank. So he gave up on it sold the head few other bits. Could you double check that plz, I can't find anything online.
so the tensioner is suppoto be just finger tight? that cant be right there is no way that is not goin to vibrate out finish your videos man or why else make them
I have a 1995, pin does not go in at TDC. It's weird af. So I'm about to just time it like normal but the flywheel slot is nowhere near TDC and I had to grind the pin to even fit.
+Nathan's DIY Garage helped since I need a visual diagram. This is like the only m44 timing video I found. It's hard because no one posts about these motors they're always swapped. But all is well motor going in tomorrow.
Hello nathan.. if I use camlocks and zip tie timing chain to gears can you keep timing the same? Never done timing on double overhead cam motor, just single v8 Ford.
hi Nathan do you have any videos on how to do the timing on an e46 318ci m42 2002 bmw ?

Hey Nathan, I would like to ask you if you could write down the procedure of cyl head tightening all the way. In video you saying 55 pounds is the final step (I assume foot-pounds). First time I've been installing head onto the block, I did a stupid mistake of forgetting the head bolt washers, and tightened it all the way with BMW service manual tightening specs (30NM -> 90deg -> 90deg). After that I replaced the bolts one by one without replacing the head gasket and with washers in place of course. That wasn't good of course I just had to try it out as some people on the web proposed to be a possibility. I had air in my cooling system and overheating so the head gasket was pretty much blown right away. After that I replaced the head gasket the proper way, again with that BMW proposed service manual way and with washers, and everything right this time. Checked my cyl head for any problems, and as I assumed there was none as it was machined like a 2 weeks before placing the first gasket and car didn't even run for an hour. And I have no idea why, but the issue remains. My main concern is that 55 foot-pounds you saying as a final step. If you had any experience like this one, please share it. My next plan is going to take the head off again and take it to be measured, even tough I cant see any problem by eye on it. And I did clean up the engine block surface, but will try to straighten it up a bit more precise.
Hey bro. can the timing chain and guides be change on a M44, 1.9. without taking the head off?

Yes it can, I've undone pretty much the whole engine apart and rebuilt. You just remove both timing chain covers and head stays in place. And heads up: don't be surprised about prices and availability of those guides, it's kind of a nightmare to get them. And good luck loosening the crank bolt I've been figuring out the way for like 2 days.
i put a breakerbar on the crank and left the handle on the floor then cranked the engine for like a second bolt was lose after but be carefull if u do that could be dodgy and probably not the best way to do it, i didnt really have any other choice, theres a video of a guy doing it on youtube good luck with ur car dude read ur other coment sounds like a pain xD
stupid question sorry, does 318is engine matches in 318i e36 without any adjustments if u know what i mean, and if not what adjustmenst i need to do it?

For short answer, you cannot convert 318i to 318is(318ti). 318i and 318is has many differences, the main one is the displacement. That causes many other differences, things like the head and some other stuff going with it. If you are interested in more info, go to realoem.com and see the differences in each part you want to know. or even see your whole car by VIN taken apart piece by piece.
Nathan's DIY Garage yeah I saw those. Only thing is they don't adjust sideways like the ones you used in the video and IV seen reviews saying that they don't fit because of that.
i have an m44? engine 1.9l in a 97 z3 it has 60 psi on 1 and 4 35 on 2 and 15 on 3 could that be a head gasket the car only has 60 thousand miles and wont start cranks just dosent seem to fire
Bro look a that¡ In a minute 20:31 start to come up in chain a strange coffe&Milk ¡¡ (O.o)wtf... What is this?? Thanks for vid that's very interesting ;)

Hi Nathan, that must have been discouraging having no pressure on 3 and 4- could the timing still be off?
I guess not, must be a ring thing
Nathan coming in clutch to help me breeze through my m42 head gasket and top end gasket refresh !! You the plug Nathan

ZeroGHome24 hello if I remember right it will only fit 1 way

What is the link to part 3 of this video ?
Great video, im almost to this point, just waiting for some gaskets. Looks awesome with no valve cover.
Hi... after one hour run time you will do retorque all the head bolts so what's the torque number at this step please? Thanks
So when replacing the chain tensioner do I have to release it for full tension prior to starting? If so how?

Wheres part one brotha? ALSO THANKS FOR THE VID!!
Helped me a lot today. Especially since I'm rebuilding my m44 after I spun a bearing
+AndrewKidd14145 that sucks, im glad the video helped

i thought it was insane how much the throttle body boots were compared to the other cars

Can't find the 1st video? Link? Thanks.

Hey great video man, at 16:02, the inlet cam reluctor is it the same on the m42 and m44?
Thanks
Hi Nathan is the m42 and m44 timing chain kits the same
wow Nathan this is Gold here bro. 5 freaking stars *****

Hi my pin broke wut should do
you know that torque takes the cranks and banks and coginetes of the camshaft for bmw e36 318is m44
Hi, please somebody who write the name of the piece who appears in 9:49 or 14:22 minute. Thank you.
*I need to buy that piece
How do you know what torque to set for each head bolt??? Any links ?
What year is this
do you have a link to the cam blocks you used?
amzn.to/2ESfMKA
this is what you will need for the m44
Nathan's DIY Garage yeah I saw those. Only thing is they don't adjust sideways like the ones you used in the video and IV seen reviews saying that they don't fit because of that.

Thanks for vid that's very interesting ;)
That's how engine oil mixed with antifreeze/water looks. A good indicator of a blown head gasket.
