Apologies for the more slap dash video, I didnt know i was recording it until I was 😂 normal programming will resume next week... I've done a couple of hundred miles in it now and its running like a clock! Absolute cracker.
I love this ford. My grandfather had one that was pass down to me. I learnt to drive stick on this car. Was a 2.0L four speed gear box. Overhead cam with a Weber carb. Sounds and drive amazing with lots of top end power. Miss this car.
It is always easy to tell those that have been brought up well and naturally respectful and your respectful manner to the previous owner is a perfect example, a great buy and a great car 👍👍
Remember starting my YTS ( youth training scheme) in 1987 at a car body repair shop in mid wales🏴 worked on lots of cortinas....run my own body shop now .👍 Love the vids on it.
30 years ago my mate bought a mk5 2 door 1980 v reg 1.3 l after short time he put a 2.3 v6 in it was very nice to drive .. he got his at action for £250 year later i found a red 1982 x reg 1.3l for £275 ..... miss the 1980s we had better cars back then than the cheap scrap they make now...
Les Evans and son of 93 Whitchurch Rd Shrewsbury , great old school service , can do any car audios inc old Cassete radios like that Cortina , the Ford Cortina was repmobile of choice for a reason , i had a 89 1.8 LX Sierra but now given the choice i'd much prefer that Cortina for all of the reasons you stated about it . Btw , i really loved the casual , but passionate nature of the video .
Such a beautiful Cortina. Fun fact: my dad had the only F-plate MkV Cortina in the whole of the UK. Due to a balls up by DVLA, he was given a 1988 F reg instead of the usual V plater. He scrapped it in the end and bought another one which was then nicked in 1993 😢 this one is so nice though!
The Cortina is gorgeous Ben, its such a joy to see these old cars getting back on the road, and now you have tunes, I see many miles of relaxed motoring on the horizon. See you in the next one, keep well mate.
My Dad bought a new mark 4 in 1978 a 1.6 GL in Bermuda blue . I remember going down with Mum to get it from “Englishes” dealer in Bournemouth also I know for insurance purposes , ( the sales man rang for insurance while we were there ) exactly £3,000 . I was 18 years old and drove the car many times .
So many memories being jogged here Ben. It was a staple of so many company car parks back in the 70s and 80s. We only had the 1.6 and 2.0 never the 1.3. I had a 2.0GL estate in gold with a brown vinyl roof. Same colour interior as yours. Many motorway miles munched, and a fair bit of "courting". Oh such happy days 😂
Ben, a few years ago I would not have given Halford the time of day, but lately they have vastly improved the general service and I often recommend friends use them, very impressed with the knowledgeable and helpful staff. Kind regards.
Don't think I ever went in a cortina as a kid, my dad was a sierra man mostly, so cool to see this back on the road doing it's thing though. Can't believe how easily it ran and how preserved it was by it being kept in a garage, nice another car to add to my "I didn't think anything of them as a kid cuz they were everywhere but now it's actually quite cool" list lol
I love the late 70s fords. Had a mk1 fez that was so easy to work on and was an epic little daily. Scrap yard tuned it and raced it like a bastard at every chance. Miss that little beaut.
My first two cars in the 80's were Cortinas, the second one was a wee bit of a nightmare in the end with a fuel leak, terrible cold starter, but was ok... it was a W reg too, the first was an S reg. The W was replaced by a C reg Orion which served me well for over 100k miles.
This Cortina has turned into a lovely car. I had a few Cortina’s when I was younger in the 90s . I owned the 1.6 and a 2 L Ghia. I also loved the Granada mk 2 . I owned a 2.8 Ghia X . Those were the best Fords I ever owned. The only thing that let them down was the dreaded rust. I still regret selling them . But when you are young , you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You have quite a little gem there! Love the simplicity of the styling and the color works on that car with that black roof. You are one lucky man to drive something nice like that. Makes me miss my old 1964 Ford Falcon two door. You have a great channel and you are quite the personality! Kudos from Virginia in the USA. The simplicity of this car makes it so adorable. Your smile while driving her says it all! What many people don't realize and you noted, you don't need a NEW CAR to get noticed! Buy a vintage car that is in good condition and people will come up to you with "their story" and you get such a great social experience!
Very true I drive a 1993 Holden commodore over here in Australia 🇦🇺. People always look point thumbs to stear stop to talk if possible. It's a fun way to socialise with people.
I’m Really loving seeing this excellent car back on the road again. So many memories of sitting in the back on days out of a Mk. 5 Cortina. I want one now!!! Ben could you do one little thing please? Put the speaker cables down each side of the back seat out of sight, my eyes just see them all the time and want to tuck them out of sight 🤣. Great channel and great videos! 👍
The last of the Cortinas here in Australia. Designated TF and available as 4 door sedan and wagon but we unfortunately didn't have a 2 door. But what we did have was a 4.1L (250 ci) 6 cyl engine option....
I had a 1.6L 4door same colour same roof and interior about 40 years ago Think the 2 door ones were only made in Germany like the Granada versions Uk and belgium other suppliers other models .What a great find amazing time capsule well done
I agree, that's a beauty! Launched in 1979 but it looks more like an 80s design. Also (although I hate to admit it, being a BMW guy) it looks better than most BMWs from 79
my old man had a mk4 1.6 and then a mk5 2.0 ghia and then a granada 2.8 ghia, all loveley motors i miss them all, so cool to see this one being revived.
She wants to be on the road again. When I first started driving there used to be so many of these cheap as they were all rotten. Glad this one has been saved and will be back on the road again. Early 80s dad says they are all going for a Sunday drive and they all just in this. Love it
This reminds me so much of being about 7 year old and sitting in the driver seat of my grandparents 1.6L. Had exactly the same brown interior and can remember the gear shift action as if it were yesterday. All Cortina's used to have those Stomil tyres fitted back then 😅
Thank you so much for bringing this old girl back to life. My dear old dad bought me an ‘81 1.6 mk V cortina GL in 1989. Beige. I was 18 years old. We monkied with it. Twin webbers, 2.0 head, wide wheels, spot lights, shockingly loud air horns. I stuffed it into an old princess and I just broke a headlight. It totaled the princesses front end. It was a lovely old tank. Fantastic memories.
I had a MK4 Cortina back in the mid 80s. My second car. Bag of crap! I could see the road through the hole in the door. Rebuilt the 1.6 Pinto engine using a "spare" bottom end that turned out to be a 2 litre. Great fun. Never ran right, and positively dangerous in the wet. How we laughed!
Great video, I remember having a Ford Cortina mark 5 with a 1.6 engine and they’re very good reliable cars, as long as you keep on top of the rust they’re fine.
Very well done, I’m exactly the same way with my 1971 Austin Vanden Plas 1300, and to boot l went to Halfords and bought the very same radio last summer 👍
I suspect like many here my dad had a W reg 2.0L GL. It was his pride and joy. He loved it. I was very young but knew that we weren't well off and that the boat was well and truly pushed out to buy the car. Indeed the controversy lingered and when my mother for reasons unknown to me insisted the Cortina was replaced with a 1.3 Metro I don't think my Dad ever forgave himself for giving in. Their marriage didn't last much longer 😅. Always loved the Cortina, boxy but what a car and these days a real head turner. Really appreciate you committing to this beauty 👍
ATS always sold manufacturer spec exhausts and you have a branch in Chester and Frodsham too. Might be worth checking them out. As for the extra lights, mark 4 Cortina’s had factory round spots next to the headlights and the square fog lamps were period but I never used the ones with the silly black plastic guards on as I thought they were a bit naff back in the day. My 2000E mark 3 had 7 inch Wipac rally pencil beam spots up top and oblong front fogs mounted in the panel undertones the bumper. Mind you, back in the 70’s and 80’s I tended to fit the Wipac rally lamps on most of the cars I owned because I used to watch the RA C rally every year for the full week and those lights were needed.
we did get them they just didn't sell many , a few hundred total i think. the best granada was the coupe ,they didn't sell either, only a few thousand . was reading about them in a second hand bookshop a few weeks ago.
@@andrewmcewan8081 Oddly the Mk1 coupe came in two subtly-different bodyshells. There was a Coke bottle rear wing version, followed by the straight-lne rear wing version. Will have to check about the 2 door saloon Mk2 being in the UK but I was convinced we never got it. The brochures are on line, so I'll take a look but that said, the later Sierra 2.9i 4x4 GLSi never made it into a Ford brochure, so it isn't an absolute authority.
I knew you'd fall in love with that....I mean how rare is that now? Good old Ford, simple but robust engineering. And I have to say I think it looks cool in that 2 door, blank vinyl roof form..
So jealous. Wish I still had mine. Catrina, the beige cortina, was her name. Lost her in'97. God rest, BWP 999W. Still resting in the logs of the DVLA.
Most Cortina's I'm sure had the furry seat covers and it's along time ago but there was usually a cushion in the back, Thanks again for cheering Friday evenings up.
The proper way to COLDstart this car/engine is to 1st fully depress the gaspedal, that will klick on the automatic choke. THEN start the engine without pumping the throttle. When you start driving the coolant warms up as well as the bi-metalic spring in the auto-choke. At some point while driving the choke will click off and the engine will run on normal mixture. In winter time you should turn the airfilter intake neck so it will suck air over the exhasut manifold. It improves warm-up. The radio: that white thing on the blue wire is a fuse holder, it needs an old fashioned glas fuse
Just on the tax exemption Ben, when my land rover clocked over 40 years I just went to post office and asked if they could tax it as historic. He just said it gave him the option to do so and away we went, historic vehicle tax. Then a few weeks later a new v5 popped through my door! No idea if it was right but it certainly worked.
I had one in the mid-80s for a couple of years. 2.0 Ghia S manual (SJN912W). Bright red with black vinyl roof, beige interior, and alloy wheels. Not a bad car, but very dodgy in the wet, and already rusting at both ends of the scuttle panel.
Has the 1.3L have the demist setting? Put on fan speed 3 and then pull lever towards you for extra power. My 2.0 ghia did. I didnt know for years before someone pointed it out! Fantastic channel. Always puts a smile on my face when i see its available to watch. Thank you
Yes but only cold air out of side vents and 2 vents above the heater control. Difference between Mk4 and Mk5 is that the Mk5s had hot air coming out of side demister where as mk4 only had cold air out side vents
OMG a 1300 Cortinny they must have got sick of struggling to stay with traffic and parked it, nice to see it survived, it was ten years out of date new.
Best vid of urs I've watched. Back in early 80's my first ever 3 cars were a mk3, mk4 & mk5. So nostalgic watching that and to top it off, u said the classic line "let's go to Halfords to buy a stereo and fit it in the carpark". How life used to be!! Thankyou for great video.
Sent you a link on email for the back box. I think the 1.3 ohv and 1.6 ohc back boxes were the same as i worked in a motor factors for 15 years. Also check rear void bushes on the back cradle as they always went especially the top ones. The Moprod number for the top bushes was MRM202 ans the QH number for the back box was S3028 Also the wheel cylinders are done by Firstline as i worked for them for 13 years I think the part number is BBW1098 Now there were Girling and Bendix shoes on the back and as yours are self adjusting i think they are DBA from memory 17mm and 19mm bore. Ithink they are interchangeable fitted in pairs either size The LOWER forward bush was Moprod MRM204 also a problem Cheers M8
That's what I love about those, show it the key and it starts straightaway, I do really want to see that cherrybomb go on it, bet it would sound great and possibly you'll leave it on, what a brilliant bit of kit, absolutely love it.
Enjoying the Cortina vids, I was pretty much brought up in Cortinas and Granadas. My dad would never have gone for a 1.3 though, they had to be at least 2.0, preferably a V6.
My 1st car back when i was 17 was a T reg mk4 Cortina 1.6L, followed a year later with a X reg mk5 1.6L. I put spots on them both, same as the ones in your boot, didn't wire any of them up mind, but they looked great anyway..😁😁 ..Thanks for the trip down memory lane.👍👍👍
ive only just found your channel, and so pleased i have, slowly watching your videos from the beginning, great channel and creat way of speakijg about what your doing to each Car in turn
always a fan of ford fairmont and mercury zephyr. had a fairmont really nice car. two door baby blue. mom did mom things. mentally beat me into giving it to sister. i ended up with a 64 falcon wagon. made it run and it became my commuter for a year.
I had a few 4 door mk 3 4 and 5 door cortina’s so easy to work on totally loved working on them so easy to do anything like startermoters alternators even clutches so easy best put a 5 speed gearbox into it so easy only thing that I had a problem with was the temperature gauge sitting in traffic always went high just always had the heater on full heat and still do it on my cars since always loved my cortina’s 👍👍👍
Brilliant video, didn’t skip any of it (and I’m a notorious skipper 😅) - my dad had a Mk V Cortina L and I still have fond memories of it - thank you, and I look forward to seeing the full restoration next year
In my day as an MOT tester I saw more than a few of these totally rusted out and fit for the scrap yard. Its a miracle this has survived. A serious look at rust proofing everywhere and it might last a fortnight! 🤣🤣
Yes, these, like nearly all Fords until recently, were just throw away rot boxes. They weren't even that good. Rarely offered anything vaguely technically interesting either.
@@leer798 There were more Fords sold in the first place, so unless you can quote % survival rate, it's not a very useful statement, even if you could back it up with numbers.
@@Drive-n-Vibe Newer cars don't rust like the older ones. I have a 2003 BMW E60 with 203k miles on it. No rust other than a few small patches under the rear reg plate. Underneath is solid. I also have a 2004 Fiesta with no significant rust. Early Fiestas used to rot like mad.
Ben, as regards the front calipers on your mk5, I would strongly suggest pulling them off and sending them away to Bigg Redd to get them overhauled as they were rather well-known for getting very sticky even when they were still in daily use and with yours having spent donkeys years sat in a garage that clearly wasn't totally dry then it's very likely your calipers are going to be rather crusty and unlikely to come back to any kind of proper function as the corrosion will tear up the seals and cause leaks.
Hi Ben I have a few cortina’s back in the day and I loved them, the capri lazer alloy’s were always a popular choice to put on the old cortina plus the round spots in front of the grill and the square fogs under the headlights and just like magic you have them 👍
I’m not a ford fan, that aside. Ive enjoyed every episode so far and whatever you do Ben I look forward to seeing every Friday… it’s become my routine. Love the channel. Fabulous 😃
I had a 1981 Ford Cortina 1600 GL with the 'S' pack. In Stratro Silver with a bright red interior. Loved it but unfortunately, I had to let it go because I was given a company car. Happy days l
man thats a beauty! My dad had a silver cortina estatein the early 80s, i still remember the number plate PLT 605R 😂 Ben i would love to see you and Derek from Vice Grip Garage get together for an episode!
You’re right about Halfords. There’s nothing more tragic than seeing a 40 year old man standing there with his arms crossed while an 18 year old on minimum wage fits some new wipers for them.
Not minimum wage. I was a parts person in a Halfords branch 10 years ago and the wage wasn't bad. I have to say that some modern cars are an absolute nightmare to change wiper blades on.
@@brycechessum4684 Hell no. There's a whole lot more than that on a lot of vehicles from the last 20 years. Even my 2015 Peugeot 108 has a lot more than 1 clip holding the front wiper blade in place.
Hey, Ben. Keep these bad boys coming, mate. Bloody brilliant. You mention that the 'tina has a dropped drivers door. Back in the day, my dad had a 1.6L Auto Mk4 in hearing aid beige. Great car. His door dropped, and we replaced the hinge pins and it worked a treat. It just so happens I have some of those brand new old stock Ford hinge pins. They are yours if you want them, my friend. Say the word, give me an address, and I will throw them in the post.
Nice one, love the videos. This brings back memories. my gradfather had one in iconic brown early 80s with the vinyl roof. here in the netherlands it was badged as the ford taunus.

Although we never got it in the UK, there was also a 2-door Mk2 Granada.
We did in a way, we had the Granada Coupe.
we did get them they just didn't sell many , a few hundred total i think. the best granada was the coupe ,they didn't sell either, only a few thousand . was reading about them in a second hand bookshop a few weeks ago.
@@andrewmcewan8081
Oddly the Mk1 coupe came in two subtly-different bodyshells.
@lewis72 I'm going into town tomorrow, I'll see if that books still in the shop, then tell you what it's called.
The coupe was a Mk1.
I was referring to the Mk2 2 door but we didn't get a Mk1 2 door (saloon) either.
I knew you'd fall in love with that....I mean how rare is that now? Good old Ford, simple but robust engineering. And I have to say I think it looks cool in that 2 door, blank vinyl roof form..
Such a sweet little car! So when do we get to go back and take Ray for a Ride? Love to see his reaction
One of the best cars ever made keep up the good work.
So jealous. Wish I still had mine. Catrina, the beige cortina, was her name. Lost her in'97. God rest, BWP 999W. Still resting in the logs of the DVLA.
Most Cortina's I'm sure had the furry seat covers and it's along time ago but there was usually a cushion in the back,
Thanks again for cheering Friday evenings up.
Put brown recaro seats in it with the fish net headrests! Cool As Ben! 💯🤙
I remember getting driven to primary school in one of these, good times.
This so takes me back, I had a 2 door MK5 ‘Special Order’ for Disabled Drivers 1.6 Base Automatic!
Same colour incidentally!
Wow, this brings back some memories, one of the first cars i had was a white 'V' reg 1.3 MK5 Cortina, never seen a 2 door one before, very nice.
The smile on your face when your driving it says it all
When you were under the rear end, I note that there's a lot of oil around the diff. Check the diff oil.
Put a magmount antenna on the back and a wee cb radio in it, would be the icing on that sweet cake 😊
Manual choke fitted to this car
Difference between Mk4 and Mk5 is that the Mk5s had hot air coming out of side demister where as mk4 only had cold air out side vents
when you put the rear box on to make it easy drop the rear shock bolt for extra room and twist it over the axle like a wind mill job done 👍👍👍
When you said everyone was taking a peep at the petrol station, a lump formed, in my throat.. Brilliant
The Moprod number for the top bushes was MRM202 ans the QH number for the back box was S3028
Also the wheel cylinders are done by Firstline as i worked for them for 13 years
I think the part number is BBW1098 Now there were Girling and Bendix shoes on the back and as yours are self adjusting i think they are DBA from memory 17mm and 19mm bore. Ithink they are interchangeable fitted in pairs either size
The LOWER forward bush was Moprod MRM204 also a problem
Cheers M8
That's what I love about those, show it the key and it starts straightaway, I do really want to see that cherrybomb go on it, bet it would sound great and possibly you'll leave it on, what a brilliant bit of kit, absolutely love it.
Enjoying the Cortina vids, I was pretty much brought up in Cortinas and Granadas. My dad would never have gone for a 1.3 though, they had to be at least 2.0, preferably a V6.
That Cortina is a gem. I had one way way back but it was the estate version in red.
For a Bluetooth head unit, Blaupunkt Madrid. I’ve got one in my mk2 polo coupe. Looks kind of period correct but has Bluetooth and DAB.
@@lewis72 nothing has changed. i saw a 2014 with visible rust on the boot today
@@lewis72like every other car on the road at the time in the same price bracket. There’s more fords left on the road now than those rivals
@@leer798
There were more Fords sold in the first place, so unless you can quote % survival rate, it's not a very useful statement, even if you could back it up with numbers.
@@Drive-n-Vibe
Newer cars don't rust like the older ones.
I have a 2003 BMW E60 with 203k miles on it. No rust other than a few small patches under the rear reg plate.
Underneath is solid.
I also have a 2004 Fiesta with no significant rust.
Early Fiestas used to rot like mad.
Yes, it is so nice. I would like to see it sympathetically restored, and I would keep the original wheels too.
It could do with a passenger side mirror, the speaker wires hiding and some 80's alloy wheels, A set of compomotive wheels would finish it off.
Brilliant Ben I had a 2 L s cortiner love the old fords
Hi Ben I have a few cortina’s back in the day and I loved them, the capri lazer alloy’s were always a popular choice to put on the old cortina plus the round spots in front of the grill and the square fogs under the headlights and just like magic you have them 👍
Watching the happiness you got from that Cortina was fab . 747 freighter loadmaster here.
@@JamieCameron-Mackintosh-z7c 1 clip not hard at all compared to the old variety.
