Thank you this was very helpful. The lady really seems to know what she’s talking about. I just took over caring for my father’s dog who is very old and was in a lot of pain. She wasn’t being cared for properly - or at all really - but now that i’ve had her put on Gabapentin and an NSAID she seems to be doing a lot better. I even saw her wag her tail this morning, which she hasn’t done in a long time.

I adopted a 6 year old Hound/Beagle mix last October 2021 . She was a very nervous dog , afraid of everything , she don't like to play or go for walks. I had to drag her out for walks or put her into the car and drive to a park. As soon as she heard a car sound or motorbike she was pulling me like crazy wanted to go back . She always pulled hard, i even bought a "choke collar" to stop her pulling but it doesnt helped. In December , she got very sick , looked like ear infection, i tried ear cleaning solution and ear drops (for dogs of course) but didn't helped . So i went to the vet . They gave me ear drops and antibiotics. Ear infection got worse , now she had a head tilt and her lips were hanging down on one side, unable to eat. Back to the vet again , more drops antibiotics + Steroids. But it got worse. Referred to a specialist , did CT scan Blood tests etc found a "mild middle ear infection" ?? recommended painkillers . Went to another vet who started again Antibiotics and steroids !!! this went on for over 4 months . NO IMPROVEMENTS. So i stopped all and went natural . I gave her Olive tree leaf, lion's mane ,oregano oil , Salmon oil, Turmeric, home cooked food (50% meat 50% vegetables) etc. She improved slowly over the next few weeks, no more head tilt, no more hanging lips. Less bulgy red eyes. But now she is walking like a turtle very slow and have to rest and sit every few metres. Last week in the park, she suddenly screamed and was unable to walk at all. I had to carry her home (she weight 32kg) yes she is around 12 kg overweight. So went to Vet again (another one ) who suggested x-ray and found severe arthritis in her rear legs ? They gave her a new drug called "librela" which she need to get ones a months ? A week after this injection , no improvement unable to walk for more than a few metres . I called the vet and told them that this injection doesn't work , so they gave me GABAPENTIN and told me to give 750 mg paracetamol as well . If this doesn't work i think i have to put this dog down . I tried everything and spend over £3000 in Vet bills . What is wrong with this Dog ?

I’m sorry to hear the dog was getting worse when you started taking care of him. Probably he was neglected for years and just like humans they get depressed and this depression leads to many diseases.

I wanted to know more about this medication as it was prescribed for nerve pain in my dog. However, I’ve heard horrible serious side effects from people about withdraws including mental and physical pain after that is unbearable. What advice would you give me as to how this would affect my dog.

Our best advice is to consult with your vet, preferably a member of the IVAPM well versed in current neuro pain relief medication protocols who understands proper dosing and withdrawal. Find one near you at ivapm.wildapricot.org/Member-Directory

Thanks for the feedback! Please turn up your volume. Dr. Downing's voice is loud and clear, tested on numerous devices here. Rene's questions are muted, so we made them clearly visible in the scrolling titles.
