One of my cats is older and is going through early kidney disease. She is underweight and I have been switching around wet cat food brands/flavours to keep her interested because I think that she get bored of one type (brand/flavour combo) after a while. Both my cats seem to do this and both also have different tastes. Something will be her favourite and then she suddenly refuses it, but if we switch to some other ones, and then come back, they'll like it again. Did not happen with dry food - they never suddenly stopped liking a flavour. Maybe feline kidney disease or cat feeding preferences could be good topics.

The vet I worked at was actually the first one to notice that something wasn't ok with me. He looked at me one morning and said jokingly; "Sweetheart, I'm worried... you are starting to move like the textbook version of an arthritis dog!"! We laughed it off and moved on. Little did we know how much he was on the right track, ... I was diagnosed with Wegeners 4 years later! He was always the one not being satisfied with my doctors opinions, without him I'd never have gotten a proper diagnosis and treatment!
Could you talk about anxiety in pets? I struggled for a long time to try and get treatment for my dog who is know has anxiety. (I have it too, I know the symptoms.) But repeatedly my vet said his anxiety wasn't "severe enough" for treatment. The poor boy is scared of doors closing, but the vet refuses to help. Any insight?
I think that is a pretty broad topic and I may make some videos on it. In the meantime, I would suggest that any problem that owner anxiety IS severe enough for treatment. I suggest you ask your vet for referral to a veterinary behaviourist, or find a vet who has an interest in behaviour to help you out. There are definitely methods to help deal with what you are describing.
Thank you for making videos like this! They are informative and you know how to explain these issues well! I like that you issued problems with aging animals and I have a question regarding it. I wondered if animals can also change mentally with age or encounter neurological problems related to it? I have an example on my male cat, who is 18 years old and the older he is, the more vocal he gets. He didn’t use to meow almost at all, but lately (last 2 years or so) he is meowing more often that would even be bearable for us. First I thought it’s some essential problem, such as he is telling me that he is hungry, but when I present a full bowl of wet food to him, he seems disappointed. And after a while I see him walking around his bowls again, meowing as if he was starving to death, as if he had forgotten that his bowls are actually full already. Other times he comes to my room, jumps on bed and starts meowing. When I come there I tell him “hey I’m right here with you the whole time”, and he is like “oh ok” and then calms down, but soon he goes around meowing again. He often just wanders around house and meows so much and loud that sometimes his voice gets raspy and even then he proceeds to be vocal as much as he can. He can go like this for literally hours with no avail. We were worried, so we took him to vet, who performed bunch of tests and luckily he seems to be physically well, so I guess that it must be something happening in his head that makes him this way, or that it could be gradual memory loss. So is it possible for older animals to encounter such things that we would call dementia or Alzheimer’s in case of human? It would be cool if you would consider making a video regarding these issues and what else can we generally expect with old animals!
That is a great question. I think that whether animals get neurodegenerative disorders that affect their behaviour is an interesting question. The answer is probably yes, and also they are probably not clinically obvious. Most behaviour changes later in life are linked to simpler explanations, like chronic pain or heart disease. Brain tumours are also not uncommon and can cause behavioural changes, as can syndromes like amygdalar necrosis in cats. For owners that are interested and have the money to spend, referral to a neurologist for an MRI is often a great step to diagnosing or at least ruling out disease that is affecting their pet’s cognition.

Our dog (a 8 year old Chow chow) suddenly started to limp a little after standing up from resting. It was all very sudden - that's why we immediately noticed it. He is very active and we normally go for a run everyday (~30 min.). We don't have a diagnosis yet. I hope he is ok :(

I have a dog who's about 37 kilos and just turned 10. He's a good boy. Last time I took him to the vet it was for a few lumps I found and the vet said they seemed benign but to keep an eye on em. Other than that, he's the healthiest 10 y/o pup the vets seen in a while :)

I have a dog question. I had an old dog and she started to spin more and more when she walked, until she couldnt walk anywhere, just spinned in a circles. Was there anything i can do to make her walk normally? She died because she was 16 already, but if my next dog will have this problem i wonder if i can help it.
Sounds like a brain tumor. Nothing you can do to prevent them. However, if you have the resources, and I'm talking about >$10,000, then you could seek the help of a veterinary neurologist as many of these respond well to surgery or other oncologic interventions. You do have to be very committed, and have the resources to travel down this path though; it is not for everyone.
That is a loaded topic that I’m not sure I want to touch. In general terms though, I think some variety is good when they are young because cats get food obsessions if they are on one type of diet only for a lon time, and then when they are over the age of 10, I prefer wet food as it keeps them hydrated and dehydration makes all the old cat diseases worse.

Believe me: The burning pain of arthritis doesn't feel worth the luckiness of living long. I haven't even lived that long anyway. I got arthritis from a traumatic incident. I had it when I was 30. But now it's happening bc I'm getting older. That kind is RA. It's really awful. I think it's hereditary.
Dr. Uri, Can you PLEASE talk about why giving away your pet or putting your pet down when there is an issue should never be the first thought or option? This arthritis video made me think about how many people put their pet down because they think he or she is "just old" and it's time. There is treatment that can help most cats, dogs, and other pets. Ditto for behavioral issues like going to the bathroom in the house, barking, excitability, fearfulness, aggression, bullying, etc. There are ways to treat behavioral issues. Giving a pet away or putting them down should always be the last option, not the first. I know you can have a big influence if you make a video about these things. Thank you so much, Dr. Uri!

Great question! It can be, but it can also be a sign of generalized weakness or a neurological disorder so you have to be careful not to misdiagnose these. A thorough neurological and orthopaedic exam and some X-rays will typically lead to a diagnosis in these cases.
I feel you forgot about when animals end up being tender, and start growling/moving away when getting pats etc. they become more irritable with the pain. A lot of people i know mistake this aggression for the animal being naughty or an asshole (especially with cats). But still i love your videos, keep doing a great job!
Great comment but I did not forget. Palpational pain, which you describe, is not a common sign of arthritis in dogs. In fact it is almost never seen. In cats, increased aggression can be a sign of pain and I cover that in an upcoming video about geriatric cat care, so please keep watching :-)!
Can you comment on how to determine if Cartrophen treatment is effective? I assume a reversal of symptoms. We had a rottie/shepherd cross (used from age 9-11) that greatly benefitted from it, but our other dog (malamute/collie/lab) showed little if any benefit. It turned out he was experiencing nerve pain, not arthritis, and we only learned that from a secondary scan done while he was under for a dental. We had gone through a number of drugs before seeing positive results with CBD. We regret not catching his real issue sooner!
Great question. I usually use activity level and owner subjective impressions to guide arthritis therapy. Not a fan of CBD as the evidence just isn’t there to support it yet and we have a ton of sage and reliably effective treatment options with less side effects than CBD.
Helpful Vancouver Vet thanks for the reply! We weren’t initially interested in trying CBD for the same reasons, but the other drugs we had tried - especially gabapentin (various doses over an 8-month period) - caused him to lose all appetite and become lethargic, anxious, and incontinent. The CBD does none of those things, and it’s like we have our old dog back!
That is very unusual for gabapentin... if you are getting it compounded it could be an issue with the substrate. I’m not saying CBD doesn’t have potential but I also don’t believe there is any reliable evidence that it is helpful or not harmful, and I have treated many CBD and marijuana overdose cases. Unfortunately there are drugs out there that mask signs of pain without actually providing pain relief, and we have no idea about appropriate dosages for it, although “to effect” isn’t necessarily wrong. Mostly I want to discourage people from just feeding their dogs random CBD doses instead of seeking proper care.
What tips do you have for a first time pet owner who's looking for a rescue? How would I be able to determine distress triggers induced by PTSD (such as rubbing a dog's chin causes aggression but belly rubs are ok)? Great video as always! Cheers from the USA mate!
I really enjoy your videos. However I have a cat that I adopted about a year ago. And while he has become more comfortable with us after living with us, he still has a tendency to be very nervous more often than not. Additionally, when we're working with him, trying to brush him or trim his claws, he reacts poorly to being squished and swaddled, so we have to take some very different approaches to with him. Do you have any suggestions for ways that we can work with this challenging feline?

I am hesitant to recommend specific treatments online but in general terms: pain control, padded sleeping areas, judicious exercise and weight control.

Stupid question but how can a dog get atheritis? Or do you mean osteoarthritis? because dogs are active and such. I can't think of many or any reasons why a dogs joints get inflammation in the first place.

This arthritis video made me think about how many people put their pet down because they think he or she is "just old" and it's time. There is treatment that can help most cats, dogs, and other pets. Ditto for behavioral issues like going to the bathroom in the house, barking, excitability, fearfulness, aggression, bullying, etc. There are ways to treat behavioral issues. Giving a pet away or putting them down should always be the last option, not the first. I know you can have a big influence if you make a video about these things. Thank you so much, Dr. Uri!
Thanks that was just the subject that’s been on my mind. QUESTION: when you notice a dogs legs occasionally trembling could that be a sign of arthritis too? It was the case with my sister’s dog and I was hoping you could shed some more light on that. Thanks 🙏
Great question! It can be, but it can also be a sign of generalized weakness or a neurological disorder so you have to be careful not to misdiagnose these. A thorough neurological and orthopaedic exam and some X-rays will typically lead to a diagnosis in these cases.

I would suggest a vet consult always as it is not always easy for you to distinguish arthritis from more sinister conditions.
I feel you forgot about when animals end up being tender, and start growling/moving away when getting pats etc. they become more irritable with the pain. A lot of people i know mistake this aggression for the animal being naughty or an asshole (especially with cats). But still i love your videos, keep doing a great job!
Great comment but I did not forget. Palpational pain, which you describe, is not a common sign of arthritis in dogs. In fact it is almost never seen. In cats, increased aggression can be a sign of pain and I cover that in an upcoming video about geriatric cat care, so please keep watching :-)!
Can you comment on how to determine if Cartrophen treatment is effective? I assume a reversal of symptoms.
We had a rottie/shepherd cross (used from age 9-11) that greatly benefitted from it, but our other dog (malamute/collie/lab) showed little if any benefit.
It turned out he was experiencing nerve pain, not arthritis, and we only learned that from a secondary scan done while he was under for a dental. We had gone through a number of drugs before seeing positive results with CBD. We regret not catching his real issue sooner!
Great question. I usually use activity level and owner subjective impressions to guide arthritis therapy. Not a fan of CBD as the evidence just isn’t there to support it yet and we have a ton of sage and reliably effective treatment options with less side effects than CBD.
Helpful Vancouver Vet thanks for the reply! We weren’t initially interested in trying CBD for the same reasons, but the other drugs we had tried - especially gabapentin (various doses over an 8-month period) - caused him to lose all appetite and become lethargic, anxious, and incontinent. The CBD does none of those things, and it’s like we have our old dog back!
That is very unusual for gabapentin... if you are getting it compounded it could be an issue with the substrate. I’m not saying CBD doesn’t have potential but I also don’t believe there is any reliable evidence that it is helpful or not harmful, and I have treated many CBD and marijuana overdose cases. Unfortunately there are drugs out there that mask signs of pain without actually providing pain relief, and we have no idea about appropriate dosages for it, although “to effect” isn’t necessarily wrong. Mostly I want to discourage people from just feeding their dogs random CBD doses instead of seeking proper care.
What tips do you have for a first time pet owner who's looking for a rescue? How would I be able to determine distress triggers induced by PTSD (such as rubbing a dog's chin causes aggression but belly rubs are ok)?

I really enjoy your videos. However I have a cat that I adopted about a year ago. And while he has become more comfortable with us after living with us, he still has a tendency to be very nervous more often than not. Additionally, when we're working with him, trying to brush him or trim his claws, he reacts poorly to being squished and swaddled, so we have to take some very different approaches to with him. Do you have any suggestions for ways that we can work with this challenging feline?

She is hasn’t broken the skin yet, but scares me at times. I’m as gentle and kind as I can be with her, and don’t know what is causing this or how to stop the behavior. Help! (Beth)

I am hesitant to recommend specific treatments online but in general terms: pain control, padded sleeping areas, judicious exercise and weight control.

My dog scratches his ears often and then one day one of his ears bulged and later went back to Normal but the ear remains to be bent and does not go back to normal state how to cure this doc?
I’d suggest go to a vet, get ear cytology and cultures, go from there.

Stupid question but how can a dog get atheritis? Or do you mean osteoarthritis? because dogs are active and such. I can't think of many or any reasons why a dogs joints get inflammation in the first place.

Animals and humans. There is no way to reverse OA. We just manage the pain and then get a joint replacement.
