This makes me so happy! I love hearing adoption stories of senior pets 😊 I just recently adopted another - you can see “Cosette” on my Instagram page instagram.com/Sara.ondrako Thank you for adopting! 😊
I’m TERRIFIED now that my pack is on their senior years. I have major anticipatory grief but need to redirect and focus on the fact that they are still here with me happy and healthy. They are my whole life ❤️❤️❤️
I feel you, I’m exactly the same. I have to redirect my fear to do things we can share and enjoy now be happy and present for them. They are my whole world 🌎 ❤
I'm adopting a beautiful senior the week before Christmas, her name is Elsie. Elsie has had a very rough life and no one else seems to want her. Me and my family want to make her Christmas special since this is her first real one. It's going to be hard for her to get used to us because she comes from an abusive family. I want to know how to take care of a senior properly to make her last years as amazing as I can. This video really helped, thank you.
Thank you so much for adopting a senior! Patience is the key and for a dog coming from an abusive situation, there's so much power in enrichment for confidence building - lots of choices she gets to make where the outcome is positive emotionally for her. So glad the video helped and congratulations on your new family member!
Hi thanks so much for the kindness u add ti the world hr existence make the world better place plze tell us more how is elsie would love to hear from u
Also, be aware that older arthritic dogs arent able to scatch their ears. So keep their ears clean and give them a regular scratch. Massage, and if they are able, give a short excercise walk each morning and evening.
I have wanted to adopt a dog for a while and I am only a teen so I still live with my parents and they arent so keen on getting one. At first, I wanted to get a puppy, but then I saw a video of an animal shelter and I realized that I saw a lot more senior dogs than young ones. I decided I really wanted a senior dog to give them comfort in their last couple years. I talked to my mom and she seemed more into that idea than a puppy. Hopefully, we will get one! This is such a helpful video, too! I feel much more prepared!
I love hearing this - great job doing some research before actually making a decision. The great thing about older dogs is that they don't usually exhibit the behaviors that puppies do (needing to potty every few hours, chewing things up, etc.) which makes for a little less work in the beginning. An older dog is a great way to start learning about the responsibilities of being a pet parent. Best of luck in your search for a new furry family member!
I am in my 60s and my wife and I are moving into a house from an apartment this year. On ur agenda: adopt a senior dog. I will definitely be referencing this video!
My babies sleep with me. Ive had cats and currently have dogs. When they can no longer get onto a bed or sofa, my bed goes away and my mattress goes on the floor, a futon mattress with pillows takes the place of my sofa. They’ve provided me a lifetime of love and comfort, the least I can do is give them their final years in comfort and love.
My girl has lost the use of one of her back legs and has an arthritic front shoulder. She insists on sleeping upstairs (ridiculously steep) with me. So, I split a double bed eggshell underlay lengthwise and, laid each piece end to end for when it's time to go downstairs, cause that's the hardest. There's no longer any shock to her joints and she just kind of slowly surfs down. Very cute. I also have a pet stroller now, so when she's tired of pottering along, she can ride. Loves it!
Still in shock that my little shitzu-poodle, Cocoa is now seventeen years old, the fact he's still holding on almost as strong and resilient as he was when I got him as a puppy blows my mind! When he was a little less then 6 months I was still in high school, so he is my first pet and senior pet I've had to care for. I promised him I would care for him until he crossed the furbabie's rainbow 🌈 and that's what I'm going to do. I cannot say it's easy..... He is getting canine dementia, I have to feed him by hand, he falls constantly as his back legs/hips are weak, he becomes incontinent frequently and no matter how i put on the diaper(female ones) because he can't walk when i use the male wraps on him but no matter what diapers I use on him, it still leaks through.. His weight goes up and down and let me not forget I have many sleepless nights 😫😔 I can honestly say it's all worth it, but definitely keep us in your prayers 🙏🏽 🙏🏽 thank you 😊
I have an adopted senior dog who just turned 16 yesterday, we've been together since she was 8. It has definitely been a learning curve with lots of love, patience, and willingness to "listen" to her needs. The change in cognitive function has been immense and affects sleep, sometimes recognition of what should be familiar places, and brought some obsessive behaviors that she never had before. So, keeping her brain active with social activities and games has been critical to her health and happiness. I really liked your video and, from personal experience with Dori, I couldn't agree more! Thank you! ♡
my 13 year old dog is very very rusty. His back right leg has bad stiffness and hes so tired all the time that I worry but when he went to get blood work done he came out fine. I did change his food to can food because i noticed he stopped eating his food. I also feel at times he seems lost. I love my old pup, I hope I still have a few more years with him. :(
Am so scared ..not a dog person..I have my cats..bit ran into a homeless person begging me to taker her 15yr old dog..he looked so sad like he jus wanted rest. Poor baby..I'm afraid I'm going to take him..I've never had a pup really..let lone a senior pup. So scared..I hope I can do a good job.
i have a 12 year old Chihuahua Pitbull mix, she was adopted from the shelter when i was 6 or 7, she is my retired service dog and gave me 8 years of outstanding service! shes in great shape for being such an old lady, she even runs around the backyard with my service dog in training! i love her so much
My senior boy developed CDS following a surgery to remove an aggressive cancer at 14yrs old. Not even my Vet understood what was happening 😕 so I was referred to a diagnostic Vet who made the diagnosis without even seeing him. Having the diagnosis made all the difference.
My senior Midnight, shes a bundle of laziness, happiness and most importantly love, shes getting more attached to my mom over the years, right now she is 14, we rescue all of our dogs ❤️
I have a 15 year old and an 11 year old. I adjust their needs and take them to the Vets for regular check ups and extra due to their age. I follow their lead, but they are active and enjoy walks, the parks. They go all over my town with me. They seem happy and overall healthy.
We adopted an overweight dog, at least 7 years old, almost three years ago. It’s tough to get him to lose weight through exercise when he has aches and pains. We have adjusted his diet so to that he is eating healthier, higher quality food, but decreased amounts.
Glad I could be of help and I love hearing you are doing this. It’s such a rewarding experience to adopt a senior dog! Keep us posted as to how it goes!
This was so helpful thanks.I have a 14 year old dog and a 3 year old dog,the older one I have to keep an eye on her because she can't walk down the stairs so I have to carry her up and down and the young one plays rough with her, pushes her and tries to bite her 😂😂
Super great video! I love all the information you share here. I have always been thinking that I had so much time to prepare for my dog to become a senior dog - it always seemed so far away in the future. And then suddenly I realised last Sunday that my dear dog is already a senior. And today it was very obvious that he is getting old. I was devastated and shocked. And so grateful that I found your channel and this video in particular! It would be wonderful if you could make more videos about the senior dog and how to make his/her life easier and better. Thank you so much for this video!🐶💕
Thank you for this video. My Chorkie, Lilliput, is 15, almost 16- and I want to keep her as long as possible. Your video was so informative and helpful!
Very helpful video thank you. I just picked up a elderly Chihuahua mix from a pet shop who they rescued from a shelter and I noticed right away he circles my home and stares at walls for a long time. Cloudy eyes and does not seem to use his back legs. With Covid 19 there are no vets to see him as a new patient so Im really needing all the info to make him comfortable and help him as much as possible.
Thank you for sharing this information. My pup is 12 years old and she’s a Rottweiler/Pitbull whereas in the past I had smaller dogs so they were easier to care for in their senior years. She still walks but she does have issues getting up and your tips will help me make her life more comfortable. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I wish that vets websites included more info -like this video- about health, diet, and creature comforts in the pets home environment to edu pet owners. Also pre- exam / wellness visit questionnaire for vets to compare with their techs info. It would help owners clarify, discern behavior from symptoms which is necessary to quality of vet exam and treatment.
Thank you very helpful. My dog is 9 years old now a d and completely blind she is recovering from eye removal surgery. I want t to buy her glasses for when she is outside in the yard what kind should I get for her. She will be going back to therapy work in nursing homes soon.
thank you for the information, I wish the background music was paused while the vet talked but still a helpful video for what I need to know for my old boy. sadly he doesn't seem well lately :(
Thank you so much for the tips.. I have 14yr lab retriever.. He's having difficulties in getting up.. Also lost weight.. Not eating much.. Thanks for the tips on dental health n nails.. Also need to check on arthritis.. 🙏🙏🙏
Maybe look into home cooked meals. Per my vets recommendation I have been cooking my dogs food and because he’s 15 with not so great teeth, I food process it all together, so there’s not much chewing involved. There was one point he would stop eating his kibble for several days. Now he’s excited to eat!
Hi. My senior pupson has a bladder problem which means he has no control of his bladder anymore. Is there an orthopedic waterproof bed?! My pupson can't move anymore, I always changed his diapers, not many diapers holds his urine or poop (which is so hard to find diapers that can hold his poop and pee leakages). My pupson recently have a stroke and dementia and have cysts popping out off their skin. Is there milk powder or milk for senior dog, you could recommend?!
I wish you could elaborate on the increase in sleeping during the day the senior dog needs.... My Chippin is 6.75 yrs old and went from sleeping to only when i slept to Now sleeping around 12 -14hrs a day which they say is normal but for this dog, it once wasn't.
I’ve never heard of using a dremel tool for nail care but that sounds like a great idea! What would be the best attachment? This was a great video! I have a 19yr old border collie ❤
Hi! I hope this video helped you with some ideas for your Labrador. Getting old is tough. Definitely check in with your veterinarian for help as they can assess and address pain and weight which are two top contributors to mobility issues.
@@SaraOndrako how can i reduce his weight he just dnt want to walk i literally have to push him to for walk n then he make those face n i just melt down n bring him back home yes your video did help alot massage and all i m now more regular n more careful of wht he want
I like massage as a practice with dogs that also enjoy it. Sometimes it takes them a bit of time to get used to being touched that way if they aren't already but some dogs I've seen do really well with strategic massage. My old man had better days with massages. Water therapy is another option!
I have a 12 year-old female poodle mix. She has started to pee herself. I’m not sure where she is doing this as she is, most of the time, in sight. A couple times so far she just shows up a wet mess - bottom, hind legs, chest. She has a serious collapsed trachea and possibly Cushing’s disease. I noticed her tee-shirt and I am a veteran.
Thank you for your service, Stephen! Unfortunately incontinence can be fairly common in senior dogs. My old dog Cosette struggles with it now. The good news is that there are medications that can help so I would definitely talk with your vet to see what options are available for her. I also use washable diapers made for dogs to catch any accidental dribbles. I’m getting ready to do a video on what I do for my senior pitizen to help in dealing with incontinence. If you are subscribed to the channel, you should get a notification when it’s live. Hope that helps and all the best!
CBD works great! My dog is alive, happy.... no pain, gets around like a pup x.... follow instructions . My dog loves bacon flavored or Duck flavor.. larger jar lower cost .
When I knew my Boada Bear (featured in this video) was getting close to the end, I just reminded myself (a lot - because it was so hard) of how grateful I was for all of the wonderful memories of him that I still kept and I really focused on making the most of the time that I had left with him. I know it's not much but I hope that helps!
Please remove the background music as it is too loud and distracting! It is hard to focus on the message with competing audio! Music is fine but not if it distracts from the message!
Does anyone have any suggestions for entertainment/toys for senior dogs? My dog never liked to play with toys when he was younger but now that he’s older and more bored I’d really like to try some type of toy or game
Absolutely! I have several videos on enrichment and these are wonderful ways to tap into your senior's more inquisitive younger side. You can check that out here: ruclips.net/video/eXUbUyxWQMg/видео.html Also, I have an Enrichment toy list on Amazon located here: amzn.to/45BQxUz Senior dogs are the best 🥰
Do you know what I should do for my lad? He's 15 and he never lays on blankets that we put out, he just never lays down! I just want him to be comfortable.
Would you recommend getting a senior dog as a first-time dog owner? I am looking to adopt and I feel like I could help and take care of a senior dog, such as a dachshund. Any tips?
Sure!! There are a whole different set of expectations for adopting a senior dog but a first time dog owner can certainly make a wonderful companion for a senior pup in need. A few thoughts for you (and please do t hesitate to email me if you need more guidance): seniors require less physical activity typically but still need their brain worked with mental enrichment activities to keep them sharp and happy. Swimming can be an excellent physical activity for older dogs as it alleviates pressure on their joints. Be aware that canine cognitive dysfunction is fairly common (I mention this in the video) but there are things you can do to slow it down with the help of your vet and enrichment. For Dachshunds in particular, because of their elongated backs, be prepared that he/she may have some back-related issues requiring medication and even possibly surgery. I don’t want to scare you away from adopting a senior dachshund - they are absolutely lovely, you just need to be prepared for the potential of some breed-specific issues related to their neck and spine. Senior dogs are usually potty trained (woo hoo - so nice!) but... many senior dogs can experience incontenance or lose some control of their bowels eventually due to muscle atrophy. Now - none of these things may happen but these are common things to be aware of just in case. Additionally, senior dogs require a bit more vet care typically seeing the vet twice annually rather than once annually as disease processes happen faster in older dogs. Seeing them more frequently can help you catch disease processes before it’s too late and slow them down, giving you more time with your senior dog. I LOVE that you are considering a senior doxie! I hope you pull the trigger 😊 Keep me posted!
Great advice. Just as a suggestion can you mute the music after the intro as its somewhat off putting when trying to listen to this advice. Otherwise a very good video.
How to care for an older dog with bowel incontinence? Are diapers a good option? He is also very susceptible to maggots given my countries climatic conditions.
My dog is 14 drastically losing weight, her skull is even visible and so is her rib cage! She used to sleep in my room, till then she was healthy, since she is sleeping in a different room, she stopped barking and acts distant! She doesn't even play anymore! We give her the best food, she doesn't just eat! She sleeps all day and doesn't even take care of her paws like she used to by licking and grooming it! She has tooth issues! She is so scared of vets and in India, one of my pets was killed at doc's clinic so I am scared to take her there! Suggest me what I should do!
Wow really, your dog is in total pain, you have to take the hard decision to let her cross the rainbow, what your poor dog is going through is not normal, since you don’t want to take her to the vet, or look for another one she needs to see a vet asap
Can you please tell me the bread mix of your old fella if you know? I have a very sweet 10 year old girl named IsabelIsabel who literally looks exactly the same as your boy. I could never hope to know her breed composition because of the circumstances around how she came to me. So id love to know.
Hi! He was an American Pit Bull Terrier. The best dog. You could do a DNA test through Embark or Wisdom Panel for fun to see what she’s comprised of. I bet she’s beautiful!
WHOLE live I have dogs. So in the house never laminate? Only tiles who has speciale coat ore wood floor wath make the dogs not slip. And big karpets. Every dog owner mus now that?
Ok I have lost many dogs in my life & last 5 years we have lost 4 Furbabbies (age 9-14years old, all had cancer). I hear Vet Call Giant breed yet no description but RUclipsr has Bully breed which I consider large bone & over 60lbs. I have male NKC American Bulldog born in 2007 & has been lean muscle in middle 80lbs, my question is when did he become senior? We have created many beds & webbing cot, extra water bowls, plus the conditioning dry shampoo is best for short hair. 2nd question... Novice with English Pointers, when will a 8year old female be considered senior? 😭 Just had surgery to remove tiny lumps low grade mast cell this past week?
Forget it, VETS ARE RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE. THEY ALSO NO CARE OR CONSIDERATION WHEN IT COME TO SENIORS WHO ARE DOING THEIR BEST TO CARE FOR THEIR PETS "ON A FIXED INCOME!"
It sounds like you may need a new veterinarian. I'm thankful to work with so many wonderfully caring and compassionate veterinarians. Most I know do the absolute best that they can for people and their pets.
I have a 16 year old dog and a 13 year old cat. I've had them since they were born and they are the loves of my life ❤
i never thought i would be here watching this video. i got him when i was little so i guess little me thought he would live forever
We would be so lucky to have them forever 🥺

Having the same issue. Scared as hell. Not ready never be ready.
That is exactly how I am feeling
My 13 year old dog still runs up and down steps like she is young.
My dog was the same when he was 13! Seemingly his "senior" years came at 15 instead :)

My dog will be 12 this year 😢 rescue her when she was 1 ❤
Thank you for sharing this video.
I really like using the cone attachment (Christmas tree) to get under the nail easily. My second favorite is the sanding band attachment.
@@SaraOndrako Thank you! I’ll give those a try.
Thx
I have a senior dog who has ataxia and wobbly head,
I got a 17 dog and 13 yo dog
This is a beautiful senior dog. Would you please tell me what kind it is?
My dog is 17 yrs. old and hard to walk anymore.
I have a lab 11 yr old suddenly its hard for him to walk thats wht brings me to this video i m looking for guidance
Do you know anything about dog massage? Dog Yoga?
I like massage as a practice with dogs that also enjoy it. Sometimes it takes them a bit of time to get used to being touched that way if they aren't already but some dogs I've seen do really well with strategic massage. My old man had better days with massages. Water therapy is another option!
When do I switch from adult food to senior dog food for my Chihuahua
Very informative 👍👍
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!
My dog is 8 and is deteriorating fast. Depressing.
Made me tear up, mines 9, I've had him 9 years so far
Can you demonstrate brushing my dog's teeth?
Hello, my dog is 15 years old and stopped eating and he started to lose weight . Is there any tips that we can use in order to feed him
i’m not a vet but I have a 15 yr old dog losing weight as well. I bought him puppy food and he has gained some weight ( soft food)
My dog got 16years how i need to take care of my dog
Please remove the background music as it is too loud and distracting! It is hard to focus on the message with competing audio! Music is fine but not if it distracts from the message!
I lost a 15 years old doggy 2 days before. ;(
Does anyone have any suggestions for entertainment/toys for senior dogs? My dog never liked to play with toys when he was younger but now that he’s older and more bored I’d really like to try some type of toy or game
Absolutely! I have several videos on enrichment and these are wonderful ways to tap into your senior's more inquisitive younger side. You can check that out here: ruclips.net/video/eXUbUyxWQMg/видео.html
Also, I have an Enrichment toy list on Amazon located here: amzn.to/45BQxUz
Senior dogs are the best 🥰
Had to watch this on 2x speed so slow
@@sariolivares9451 She passed away 😞
I'm so sorry for your loss.
@@miss_trillionaire_manifestor I'm so sorry. Condolences. May she sleep peacefully. 💜
When your dog can’t walk and needs to pee. It’s been raining too so I need advice
My old dog started biting people. What should i do
Hire a trainer
Unfortunately, only made it to 1:57.
THAT BACKGROUND MUSIC.. MY GOD ... WHY ???
(yes, I have misophonia and it made me want to blow my brains out).
the music is a bit lound and really dosen't match the topic '-'
but thanks for the info :)
Mine is 15 years now
Her health is getting worse day by day
WHOLE live I have dogs. So in the house never laminate? Only tiles who has speciale coat ore wood floor wath make the dogs not slip. And big karpets. Every dog owner mus now that?
Practical terms....damn spell check!
The background music with words is so distracting!
This video is great but the music is super distracting!
Thanks for the feedback 😊
@@SaraOndrakoyea, I agree. I have ADHD, so… 😂
Forget it, VETS ARE RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE.
@@SaraOndrako , lol, this is a new one. Manhattan vets are the most expensive!
