How do you give away a 17 y/o dog? She's loved you her entire life, you are her whole world, and then you dump her? That's so cruel.
Some families can't afford medical bills when it comes to that, I am glad she was given to a shelter atleast.
Maybe original owner passed away and their family don't have that attachment with her.

I worked for the HSUS in Vermont for a few years. When elderly people with a cat or dog pass away none of the adult kids wants them. We received a lot of animals that way. You're right that its heartbreaking for the dog or cat. In this case it sounds like the family didn't want to deal with an old dog with health issues. I feel that if you bring a dog home you should have the intentions of making a home for that dog for his or her entire life.
@@abseiduk That's sort of the situation our family found itself in with our dog after our parents died. None of us could take a dog (I was home on leave from the military and my sister was in college), and we couldn't find anyone to take her, so it was left to me to take her to the humane society. IT broke my heart/toughest thing I ever have had to do. That was 30 years ago, and I still remember the dog's face when I left.
I can not imagine giving up my dog after 17 years.....the trauma. Thank you for giving her last moments , great moments.
We shove our old into nursing homes as soon as they are a burden. It's the same with older pets, but with even less conscious.
The trauma to YOU and the dog! My pledge to all my dogs is that I will be by their side in the end, just as they've been by mine throughout their lives. As a friend said after having to put her cat down, "We suffered so that she didn't have to." Thank you for taking this sweet baby in and loving her in the time she had left. You can tell it meant a lot to her.

Our dog is thirteen. We've had her over ten years. I can't imagine any circumstances short of a disaster of biblical proportions that would lead me to abandon her.
Just realized that Betty passed but so happy that she had pure love with these amazing humans at the end. Thank you for sharing
I lost my baby of 17 years after having her since 8 weeks old and I can't imagine doing that to her 💔
My dog died of cancer 12 yo. When he was 10yo a car hit him and broke his back. It was the only time I can remember he was crossing a street alone in his life and there was never much traffic there. Bad luck. He just wanted to see a dog behind a fence he could not resist. Fortunately he survived because he had been in a great shape and we managed to get him to a special clinic where he stayed and rehabilitated for a month. It was a great return. He lost a lot of weight and muscles but was quite well otherwise, only his back was just little bit twisted to side but you could not really tell if you did not know about it. It sucks he died of cancer because I'm sure if he was not sick he'd be with us for many more years as he was in excellent condition otherwise and full of energy till his last few days.

I had my senior dog till he was nearly 15. Held him until his last breath. It was the hardest thing I ever done in my life. But he lived an amazing live. God bless this couple for giving a senior dog a chance. It's not easy knowing you don't have that much time with them ❤️😭
I took a count of all the dogs (2 ) and cats (13) that I have had since 1995 and except for 3 that were in utter pain, they all died in my arms. I have been with death every time but my babies knew they were loved and cared for til the end. My last boy is Magic Merlin. He is the last of a litter of 8 with their mother that I fostered from the day after they were born. I fell in love with all of them and kept them all. He's the last to survive. He turned 21 in May. And my last rescue was abandoned when his owners sold the house and left without him. Thank GoD I was already feeding him before that happened. When he found out they had left without him, he came running to me, looking DESPERATE to tell me what had happened. I new what he said and I told him, ." ....don't worry anymore, you're going to live with me," And I brought him in the house with the rest of my kids. He's around 16 now and the most adorable cat I have ever had. I am so glad they came in to my life. Who else would have helped them! We have so much cruelty in the word, they were always my little drops of sunshine. And I'm 75 now. I KNOW what it feels to be OLD. But I have 2 great kids that allow me to be independent but are there just when I need them. I'm lucky with my 2 kids and 2 grandsons and a daughter I didn't give birth to.

My 16 year old dog passed away this year I been sad every day since. I couldn’t imagine giving her away

@@Andyvh2416 exactly....there is no reason to do this. Elderly dogs revert to puppies like humans revert to children and they are difficult to care for but we OWE them that. Those people are horrible humans to have done this.

My dog is 12, I could never think of giving him away in his last days. He's been there for me sense I was 13 and I'm gonna be there for him...even if I know it's heartbreaking.

It's hard but your dog will appreciate it and you will be at peace eventually knowing you did the best for him at the end.
I started appreciating my dog even more with age as he became senior at 10-12, gradually becoming slower with age but still active and joyful. Couldn't think about the time he might be gone. And then suddenly one day he just couldn't walk at all with spine cancer out of nowhere. And after a weeks of unsuccessful treatments he was a shell of himself. That's devastating.

How old are you? No one wants to do this! That dog is blessed to live this long. My mother and father are dying from diabetes. I also ended up in a wheelchair. We have 4 dogs. We love them all. And the people who had Betty loved her enough to rehome her. If people cannot take care of their dog, the mature thing to do is to rehome. It’s not easy. Ok. Geez. It sucks to get sick or disabled, only to neglect your damn dog who doesn’t deserve that. It hurts to rehome your dog to people who are able and healthy, people who have the means. This dog was blessed. Most get put down or get neglected by owners who are sick and old.
Betty was better off living her last senior moments with this loving couple ...
I hope the people who abandoned her feel the pain of abandonment themselves when they are old and frail. And when they experience that abject hopelessness and despair, I hope they think of Betty and ask for her forgiveness.
At least Betty had a brilliant home for the last part of her life, she seemed such a sweet dog

The first owners were heartless. Given her up at the age of 17, unbelievable cruel.
Thanks to the kind and amazing couple, she was having the best time ever before she passed. God bless you dear couple. Rest in peace little angel, may your soul find happiness in your new world.

She had her last moments in a good home, she knew this would be a happy family to rest, she knew it was a safe place, and since she felt safe, she knew it was a good place for her time to end. We love you, Betty. Rest In Peace.

Qasim Qureshi yeah that’s why I adopted my 8 y/o poodle last year bc I knew all the puppies would have no problem getting adopted, plus he was from the breeding mills too so he didn’t look very good in the shelter. Well he turned out to be the sweetest dog lol

Don't know the story of why she was given away after 17 years, it could easily of been an older person who is terminally ill.. people can't just assume it's out of cruelty.. so so pleased Betty had the most amazing life in her final days. Beautiful story ☺️
@ Pernille Oschlag All we’re told is that Betty’s family “decided to give her away.” We have no idea what situation they found themselves in that made that necessary - job loss, loss of income, eviction, devastating illness, trauma, catastrophe. All you know is that you wouldn’t give your dog away, in your present situation, but situations change dramatically all the time, without warning. Many people are cruel to animals, but we have no reason to believe these people were

GRATEFUL FOR THIS COUPLE for keeping her and giving her a safe place and loving home through her senior years. As a dog owner for the past 20 years, nothing infuriates me more than SELFISH dog owners who get rid of their senior dogs because it takes more effort and $$$ to take care of them. These dogs dedicated their entire lives to them, kept them company all those years, made them feel loved when they were sad or when no one else loved them, always showed how happy they were when they came home, took them out to exercise their fat asses even when it was painful to walk because of their old age, ate the garbage and cheapest food you gave them and showed you gratitude for feeding them, understood them and apologized to them when scolded for making a mess because they couldn't control the bladder emptying out or the #2 maker when it discharged something. Shame on these SELFISH people!!! The dog was 17 and probably only had a few more months to live. Why discard her and let her face uncertainty?

İ lived with one my whole life, İ mean İ wasn't born...İ was but one senior dog was there was İ just turned 1-years-old.
To be honest the dogs liked me more than most of my relatives. Don't know that dogs age but it's old.
(İt was born way before me. İt has lived with my precious family since it's owners left to live back in austria or something. They've lived in that acre's for years, 16 years later they're still standing. One did pass but the eldest one won't give up that easy.)

Maybe but don’t forget the good the family did for 17 years to the dog, not saying you are, but I wouldn’t judge the family because they may have done it because of extreme circumstances that they can’t disclose.
I bet it was an elderly persons dog but when elderly person died the other family members turned her in. Its sad to think about

"In Loving Memory of Betty" .... I wonder for how long they were able to have her? I'm so glad they stepped up and gave her a wonderful home for the remaining time she had on this Earth. I have a sense that her previous owners did not take such good care of her. She had bad arthritis. People feeding their dogs the cheapest Pedigree food or whatever brand that has grains first instead of real protein meats is a big factor in dogs ageing and developing health conditions. I loved seeing them feeding her some greens. Diet is super important for dogs and it's worth the extra cost in dog food to prevent extra costs due to health problems down the road. Obviously, ageing is ageing and health is going to deteriorate no matter what, but just like humans, dogs can live longer and healthier lives with good (better!) nutrition....
YOU ARE RIGHT!.......i give my 6 rescues a high grade kibble, high grade canned food raw carrots, almonds, cranberries, greens, sunflower seeds, greens.....RAW ORGAN MEAT......chicken hearts, livers, gizzards, keeps their "gut" clean......sluggish bowels are unhealthy.....like humans....

@@beamills9205 Great to read! I did the same with my pooches. I cooked their meals containing beef or chicken, brown rice, lentils, carrots, greens, etc. No "dog food" bags for them! Why, when I could use that money to buy them REAL food!!!
Agree my dog lived to be 16 and his diet was more like a human diet - (i.e. a healthy one not a take away fast food one) - if we dropped a grape or an apricot it barely touched the floor - if we had a beef and veg stew - he had the same - occasionally he would get some spaghetti and that was funny to watch. He rarely needed the vet and died of old age with a bit of arthritis in his rear legs/joint.

Me burying my wife while I had young kids was a bit rough. But here I still am. Kids are grown and doing well.

I would like to pass a thank you on to the Foster parents who adopted Betty. I had my dog for 15 years up until she passed. Old dogs are the absolute best! they are so loving, calm and have a very sweet charm to them :) I'm so happy she was in a home at the end.

My dog is 14 and I would never give him away. He’s my best friend and I cook for him three times a day. My little man. I’m so happy that Betty was able to be with this loving couple.

Aww. I just had to put my 17 year old cat to sleep. She was ill with thyroid and kidney disease and I didn’t want her to suffer. But they can live very long and healthy lives depending.
I adopted an eleven year old chihuahua and it was the best decision I have ever made. He is pure joy.
Same we adopt 3 yrs old chihuahua she’s turning 5 this year..

The Bible says a righteous man takes care of his animals. You will be well blessed for doing this for Betty. I have several elderly cats and I give him natural stuff that helps a lot and I was about to give you this information that I saw in memory and it broke my heart but I'm glad that she was able to be with y'all I'm loving couple it whatever time she had. @Virginia Andre I still cry every time I talk about my little girl... I know how you feel. They change our lives and fill them with so much joy, but their time with us is so, so short. I've had dogs since, and loved them with my whole heart, but the bond I had with her was like nothing I've ever experienced. I'd do anything to have her back 😔

Hopefully you are correct and I'm just judging. At least whoever gave her up didn't euthanize her... that's a positive to the situation. We rescued a 8 y/o "senior" she's 12 now and as sweet as can be. We walk everyday 2 miles. She loves her treats . We won't of made it through Covid had we not had her. I thank God we got her everyday.

Why even get a pet. If you just plan on getting rid of her as if she was just trash. My rescued German Shepherd was 17 + . I was with her till her last breath. RIP

The thing is: Old dogs are expencive and in 17 years ur financial situation can be VASTLY different... they gave her to a shelter .... what more do u want ? shoud they let her starve in the basement? throw her in the bin? set her free in the woods? or straight up shoot her? maybe this WAS the best choice to make sure she still has a chance even tho her medical bills were just to much for a normal class familiy, with unknown circumstances ? maybe the money bringer of the house lost his job? maybe someone died ? .....maybe just maybe .... Think a bit more far away then the tip of ur nose ?

@@Spike-xv1ts I was in the exact same situation not long ago we sold whatever we could, made money and way we could and cut cost without getting rid of out pets. People are always quick to dump a pet in hard times. Not to mention you should have money set aside at all times for your pets.
I have a turtle who's gonna be with me for 50 years, a lot can happen in 50 years but let me tell you my Petrie isn't going anywhere. He's going to be with me no matter what.
Circumstances change. And yes, if I was somehow incapacitated (a severe invalid or a homocidal psycho), I should find other caretakers for my children. It’s also possible they were just terrible owners 🤷♀️

I have senior cats and I can't imagine how scary and traumatizing it would be to just leave them at a shelter. I could not do that. How can you leave an animal when they trust you and need you the most? Thank you to this amazing couple for giving Betty a family where she belonged and the love she needed. ♥️♥️♥️

I've noticed this with my ol' 16 year old dog (rip) too but the older he got the more baby faced he got. I think it has something to do with the eyes starting to droop and sag and they just end up with permanent puppy dog eyes. lol

We fostered a 12 yr old basset that the former owners were just tired of. I hope we gave her the best year of her life. We miss her so much. You both are angels loving her like she needed.
And bless you too for taking in the Bassett. Likely found more love with you than it had in 12 years.

It’s a great goal, and I hope you’ll be able to do it. Just remember, having senior dogs can be very expensive. My dog is 14, and I love her and take care of her. But I stopped counting how much I had to spend on her medical care in the last couple of years. I don’t know what I would do if I could not afford it.

I can hardly see through my tears as I’m typing. The people who adopted Betty are wonderful. But sadly, I’m sure Betty was confused and must have been wondering where her family was for the rest of her life. Dogs remember and understand events and people more deeply than previously thought. Thank you to the kind people who tried to give her a happy life
It makes me mad as hell when I here people say, animals don't have feelings or can't understand us. My dog Rocky died in September and he was smarter than most people I know..

How can someone give up a 17-year-old dog? I had my dog for 12 years before I had to put her down. I would never have abandoned her under any circumstances.

Our baby girl is 11 and entered our lives two years ago. She is the most amazing cuddle bug and we can't imagine life without her. I understand your feelings, they are family until the end. They give us everything how can we do any less than that?

I stayed with my dog by his side until he took his last breath. It was so heart breaking. Our family gave our dog so much love. Even though he is gone I know he knew how much everyone loved him

I had a golden retriever while growing up, and not only was she so loved by all of her family, there were even times where my friends would protect, defend or just love her. That's what helped a lot when we lost her... you couldn't have done much more, and now they're off on another big adventure!

You should never give up a 🐕 because it is a senior 🐕. My mini Dauschand is a senior 🐕 at al mmm almost 12 years old. I will never give him just because he is old. I 💘 him to much.
Her nails are so long and she looks like she has terrible arthritis. Poor baby. I hope she was comfortable for her remainder of time on earth. Thanks to the foster family

If an owner doesn't want a 17 year old dog, don't just surrender her, 'they don't want her anymore'. It was probably too much of a responsibility. Rather have the guts to ask to rather have her put to sleep would have made them feel worse. They probably couldn't wait to 'replace' her. Thank God to you guys for going the extra mile and giving her whatever time she had left, giving her quality time she enjoyed to the fullest. She had so much life in her ❤gorgeous old girl

Our Thai Soi dog "Moo Dang", died this year, she was 19 years old. I fail to understand why people would reject an old dog, they are so easy to live with.
I'm so sad that she passed away. To have her til the end, this is what love is. Moo Dang was very lucky and must have known how lived she was. And still is. That love is always there, even after our loved ones pass. Maybe one day, you will be reunited ♥️

I think the only thing that helps to console us is that we know we gave them *the* best life right up until their last day.

I have a suggestion you may not want to hear, but it helped me. Ask your vet to tell you when it’s time for her to go. I had to when I got my dog because I didn’t want my selfishness of wanting to keep her with me for my sake instead of ending her suffering when it got unmanageable.

I have been blessed over my lifetime loving over 200 dogs and 2 dozen cats and other critters.
I am down to my last 10 old dogs, 4 of them just turned 21 yrs old and I am their doc and Rx for their hearts etc. I could never ever think of giving them up and pray HE takes them in their sleep without pain and when the last one has departed for the Bridge I pray then HE takes me right away for I cannot live a day without my boys and girls.
I have to pick up my old boys and girls to help them on the bed or chair they get a massage to help with their old joints and I cook for them and puree their food and sometimes i have had to feed them by spoon

My wife and I rescued am 11 year old American bull dog, Boxer mix. She was very sweet, but she had health issues. We shoped around and found a vet that gave us a break on the cost of the surgery. We had her 2 years now, and we are proud and happy we rescued her from the pound. And she gets along with our other rescued pets. We love all of them.
My Ginger is a 16yo beagle. She is my B forever. I couldn't imagine giving her up. I wouldn't. We even have beagle escape plans!

I'm so glad she got the opportunity to enjoy love,and support. From this video it doesn't give info about why she was given up. Maybe, the owner passed away, they couldn't keep her for financial reasons...
Who knows! When I was in my twenties I was forced to leave the house where I was staying because of 3 small dogs. They didn't want them inside my bedroom. Anyway I would board them during the day when i was at work. It took a month to save money and find a place for us.
I never regretted my decision. Even though the first few months we only ate bread and eggs. Even the dogs. That's all i could afford. I wouldn't have abandoned them. Things got better eventually. :) That was 25 years ago!♥️
Das ist ein stolzes Alter. 17 Jahre gute Pflege, sonst wäre er wohl kaum so alt geworden. Und Gott hat ein Auge drauf gehabt, dass für den liebevollen Lebensabend auch gesorgt ist.
I cannot imagine giving up my dog after 17 years! How can you give away 17 years of unconditional love and devotion? I just don’t know how people can be so cruel and for how confused she must’ve been to watch the people that she knew walk away and leave her. She doesn’t deserve to live her life on a cold concrete floor, no dog does or any other animals for that matter. I’m not sure how long that is new mom and dad got to have her for but I am so glad that what time she had she was genuinely loved and now she’s genuinely missed. You got your angel wings little girl, and I’m sure you’ll be the first pup to greet them when you meet again someday.
