- This outstanding Gullwing International 300SL is one of just a handful of roadsters built by Tony Ostermeier. It is finished to the same standard of excellence and accuracy as the coupes and is virtually indistinguishable from the original at first glance. Superb throughout and impeccably presented, it has just 1,200 miles from new and is powered by the desirable twin-cam 3.0-liter M104 engine (as fitted to the 300CE) mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The bright red paintwork is excellent, and the car is superbly detailed with impeccable trim and brightwork. Gorgeous polished wheels shod with color-keyed hubcaps and new period-style Avon 185-15 radials complete the period-correct aesthetic. The cabin also stays remarkably faithful to the period, with accurately reproduced seats, instruments, and ivory steering wheel keeping the late-50’s vibe intact. The leather, carpet, and soft trim are beautifully finished, reflecting the attention to detail Gullwing Cars put into every car they built. Only the accommodations for the radio and air conditioning hint at this car’s modern-era underpinnings.

Just looked up. Even one of the replica gullwings sold for over £200K a couple of years ago. Awesome work!
In many respects they were better than the originals. The only difference was the original had the square frame and Tony's had the tubular frame or vice versa. You could get his cars with automatic transmissions and air conditioning. Tony had worked at the 300SL finishing location so he had a lot of experience with this timeless beauty.
Tony Ostermeier cars are not replicas. They are Ostermeier 300SLs and his roadsters are rarer than the coupe. Tony was such a craftsman and a gentleman.
To paraphrase a familiar 1960’s hot dog advertising jingle..
“I’d love to be an Ostermeier winner.”

I remember Tony Ostermeier and his shop in the Southbay of Los Angeles well. He proudly showed me his first completed 300SL which he powered with a Ford 302 cid V8. I loved the car, but suggested he should try to fit the Mercedes 2.8 L doc inline six engine because it would be more authentic and more closely match the performance of the original 3.0 L engine of the roadster. I am glad he picked up my suggestion.

@@johna.4334 that RR related proverb only applied to things with more or less known price and very expensive ones in the very snobbish aristocratic world. Today rappers and footballers buy RRs and their detailed stickers are widely avaialable. Also people with medium sized prosperous business can take eg a Cullinan in lease at the end of a fiscal year to redice their tax checks so stickers do matter. God knows what this replica costs but possibly much less than a new RR and may well be within a range of sombedy without a few spare millions in his account. Its just a replica.

WHY did Ostermeier ONLY make Roadsters!?! There is certainly DEMAND for the gull-wing coupes! I was lucky-enough to drive a '55 Coupe Gullwing, and after a 1/4-mile, I KNEW I would have to "Hot-rod" any example I might Own, UNLESS someone like Ostermeier had made an up-dated version. In fact, in ALL AREAS, I KNOW an Ostermeier-copy would be SUPERIOR to a REAL one, so Ostermeier's Versions should bring MORE money than the amounts gleaned @ an auction, becauset, --compared to the cars of today, ONLY an Ostermeier-version would be "worth" owning as a driver. A 4-spd, AMC Pacer from the 'mid-70s would be a "driver's equivilent" to owning a Real one, unless you simply wanted an Expensive "Lawn-Ornament."
Tony also made Gullwings. I worked down the street from his shop from 88 to 91. What a nice man, His daughter Heika (sp) Darlene and bad kitty in the office were always fun to visit with. The Gullwing Cafe was in the front of the commerical property Tony's Gullwings was in.

In Germany 30 year old + replicas Gullwing & Roadster got historic licence plates and no problems with Mercedes-Benz. Nowadys Replicas got problems in serveral ways. A friend of mine has got one. Gullwing, red, historic plate. He is aking 250 k.
As I recall, M-B shit them down. Some cars under construction were destroyed.

Really nice-but there is one thing that lets this car down. With no expense spared on this 'cop' car, I feel that the rear window should be solid toughened glass. The rear PVC window degrades this fine example.

Mercedes Benz has the copyright of the shape and Silhouette of all Gullwings and simillar cars patented. I wonder if the replica has a certififcate from Mercedes Benz to exist otherwiese it will be crashed and destroyed offically by gouvernemental authorities. This happened in a big event some yeas ago in Stuttgart. Maybe here another way to cheat car Enthusiasts. Good Luck and hopefully the new owner can keep it. Das Mittelinstrument stammt aus der Pagode oder dem 111er Coupé und wurde im Bereich der Kontrolllampen mit einem Ölthermometer modifiziert. Jedes Mal, wenn ich als Besitzer einer ansonsten schön geratenen Replica auf dieses Mittelinstrument schauen müsste, würde ich kotzen. Das korrekt aussehende Mittelinstrument kostet als handgefertigter Nachbau €15.000 und beleidigt nicht in so hohem Maße die Pupille, wie das, was da verbaut wurde. Am falschen Ende gespart .....
To me taste the 'hips' stretching across the wheel houses for the front and rear wheels should have been eliminated, as they have no function and without them the car body thereby would have a better aesthetic appearance. Who among Mercedes fans likes women with oversized hips? Apart from this minor remark, a 300SL, albeit a remake, is certainly a means to move in style.
